More Samsung NX1-LX rumors…

There is some weird rumor about a “special” NX1 edition. The source told me Samsung is testing such a camera and still checking if it makes sense to bring it to market. It’s basically a lower megapixel version of the NX1 with those specs:

1) 10% lighter body compared to nx1, slightly different grip
2) 60fps at 4k, full sensor readout
3) swivel display
4) 1.5 stop better dr and high iso compared to nx1
5) A Samsung led video lamp is also in development to bundle with nx1-lx

What do you think of it?

  1. The only things in which I’d be interested are lighter weight and 60fps@4k.

    I don’t want low mp.

  2. Sony dared to produce the A7S with only 12MP sensor resulting in excellent High ISO performance. High ISO in the NX1 case is definitively not good enough – in Video at least. There are reviews out there which show that Panasonic GH4 surpasses the NX1 at ISO 6400. As GH4 sensor is smaller it really should be the other way around. Quoting EOSHD: Even ISO 1600 is OK for most shots as long as you get a decent exposure. ISO 3200 falls off a cliff most of the time. This is no A7S.

I think such a camera would significantly improve Samsung position as a serious Video equipment provider!

    1. I don’t know about gh4, but my nx1 produces significantly better stills at iso 3200 compared to my older nx300. I’d even say that 3200 on nx1 is better than 1600 on nx300, when the nx1 image is scaled to 20mp.

Perhaps they didn’t scale the nx1 images in the reviews you mention?

      1. That is a comparison that I am interested in, since my NX300 pretty much is my go to camera these days. The color noise can be pretty horrible in shadow areas on the NX300, especially compared to my Pentax K5, which uses a 16 megapixel sensor.

        1. I agree, nx300 was almost unusable at 3200, while nx1 is pretty decent. Of course 6d, d750, a7r and especially a7s are better. But when scaled to match the other aps-c sensors, the nx1 is probably the best of those. And even when compared to ff, there is at most one stop difference compared to 6d, most probably less.

      2. Those reviews were about video (scaling was to 4K). Lower than expected high ISO video performance can not be the fault of the sensor as NX1 high ISO performance for stills is excellent. So it is probably the algorithm issue i.e. the H.265 codec issue which might not be resilient enough if noise grain is too high. Or something else. I was hoping Samsung would improve this in a Firmware update but so far no good news here. Again, comparing the sensor size of GH4 and NX1 we could hope for about one stop better overall performance with NX1. NX1 is better up to ISO 1600, at 3200 (video) it is about the same, at 6400 GH4 (video) is quite better.

  3. That would be awesome!!
+ higher bitrate for 4k30fps. That would be almost perfect hybrid camera…

  4. I would order it instantly.
4K 60fps would be awesome, plus that extra 1.5 stops DR.
It makes sense to have a video-centric body, and a higher MP stills-centric body, like Sony have with the A7 range.
The buzz is building pretty strong now about the NX1, lots of awesome out-of-the-box footage online, rave reviews from established film makers, and the best video autofocus with those S lenses.
Also, I hope Samsung bring out some more Pro S lenses soon e.g.
    24mm S f1.4, 35mm S f1.4, and a wide S zoom

  5. 50p 4k and If they add the option of backup recording on an external grip I would buy it the second is announced!

  6. I would definitely be interested in this!
A lower mp count would allow an already impressive buffer to clear even faster photographically. It would probably also lessen the pretty substantial jello effect.
The increased DR and ESPECIALLY an increased ISO performance would definitely be appreciated! I find 28mp overkill nearly all of the time and thought the 20mp in the previous sensors was plenty of mp…but alas, we are in the age of the mp war again… The full sensor readout would only benefit from lower mp as the high ISO video a let down.
Swivel screen and lighter body? This sounds like an NX50… 😉

  7. If this does better with higher ISO and DR then I’m sold. The NX1 is a winner in a well lit environment, but I primarily shoot in lowlight and I’m not totally convinced the A7s is the camera for me. Samsung is so close to wearing the crown in this battle.

  8. sure 12mp is fine, all i want is 4k video at the best it can be .. which means having samsung use the builtin h.265 chip to transcode into h.264 and/or prores on transfers out of the camera.. so the special hardware inside the samsung nx1/500/what ever is next, does the heavy work of making their h.265 footage into something we can use straight away..

so we’d love a ‘option’ in the firmware menu, so the usb cable transfers out while converting to h.264 or prores, so it uses the usb cable to dump useable footage on our HDs and option to keep h.265 as is, just for backupa etc..

I shoot 3 cam multicam interviews for 15-20 mins.. .. which means on my machine, my converting the footage into useable files, my mac machine took 20mins to convert 1min of 4k h.265. that means waiting over 24hours for just transcoding into 4k prores LT ( or h.264 4k )

This slow converting business is whats stopping me right now from going out and buying three or four NX1 cameras today 🙁
and if the NX500 didn’t have a stupid 15min limit, that size body would of been even better for my needs.. oh well.. wait and see what comes out at the next NAB?

    1. here’s an example for current NX1 users, can I get your option on how you think the NX1 would handle this lighting environment, which is where I am shooting my documentary here in china..

it’s a dark room with ultra bright red lasers in a hospitals CT Scanner operation theatre, where they use lasers to kill cancer.

take a quick look at 10:42 and tell me what you think on how the NX1 would go please!

      thank you in advance!

  9. Samsung, I would buy this camera immediately! 🙂
Please focus on low light capability — image quality and AF — above all else, even if it’s only 12MP for bigger pixels.
And please don’t shrink the grip — already a bit too small for my American “Medium” sized hands and bigger would be better.
Leave smallness to the NX500 and maybe later an NX600/? with a viewfinder?

  10. Oh, and I and many other video pros would gladly pay more for eliminating the 29.9 minute video length maximum.

  11. 12 mpx is not usable today. Even a phone has now 16 mpx. I would buy a nx1 version 2015 is the HDMI output will provide raw signal and have a native iso of minimum 3200

    1. I kindly disagree. I will take 6 mpx if it delivers the goods in other aspects, as a press camera the influx of pixels mostly just create bulk in my humble opinion.
