More bad news: Samsung announces it discontinued the NX1 in Europe :(

Bildschirmfoto 2015-11-11 um 14.41.20

Samsung just told at EosHD:

“We quickly adapt to market needs and demands. In Europe, we will be discontinuing sales of NX1 cameras for now since there is already much better and upgraded cameras. This is specific to the region – and is not necessarily reflective of conditions in other markets. We will continue to thoroughly evaluate market conditions and will make further adjustments to maintain our competitiveness in emerging Camera categories.”

This is the next bad news on Samsung which is rumored to quite out of the camera business. Particularly worrying is the phrase “since there is already much better and upgraded cameras“. So they are actually saying the cameras of the competition are better!

  1. We quickly adapt to market needs and demands – A political way of saying we are shutting down – and we will do that in steps – Europe first – USA next – Asia third – just like in politics 🙂 first deny the facts – then weak excuses like “we quickly adapt to market needs ,,” then when they shut down in Asia – they will not say anything !!!
It is amazing that these are the same guys that said Samsung would be one of the leaders in few years – and when they started to come out with good cameras like the NX1 and NX500 – yes not perfect – but neither are the other brands cameras – If they had come out with NX2 that was a bit smaller and looks like the rest like the Olympus EM1 and Fuji Xt1 and put an EVF for the NX500 – they have an amazing APS-C sensor at 28MB and in many ways better then the Sony 24MP sensor – Samsung is a Giant company – by far larger then Fuji why in the world can they not get a better marketing team – but I grin when I see their verbiage 🙂 why cant they just say – we ventured into the camera business and thought we could be a leader quick ( which they could have ) – but we have not done well in marketing and the mother company has decided to pull the plug – no instead we get the political verbiage 🙂

    1. As much as I dislike Samsung câmeras (not the NX1), I agree that the text is amateurish at best. No self-respecting camera maker would admit having an inferior product.

I have been writing about Samsung’s demise because of brand image for quite a while. They needed a photo brand, selling Rollei was a huge mistake, no matter how good your product is, it won’t make it in the photo world if it shares its name with a washing machine or microwave oven. Even Toyota had to create a virtual brand in order to sell in the upper segment.

Prepare yourselves for the next weakest link, the M4/3 system.

      1. Yep, expect Panasonic to be dropping out of MFT any time now…

They are now producing cameras with MFT-mount, T-mount APS-C and T-mount full frame. The latter is the future.

      2. m43 is the strongest of all mirrorless systems. Canon EF-M, Nikon 1, Fuji X cannot touch it in terms of market penetration (not even close), and Sony E (APS-C) seems on life support at best (last camera or lens were released ~2 years ago or so), despite nice sales of a6000.
For comparison, 6 m43 cameras were released this year by Olympus and Panasonic. Oh, wait, there was one from DJI too, so 7. Kodak and Blackmagic keep producing their products in the mount. 5 active brands producing cameras for the mount.

  2. I can see them starting to compete with Sony in the sensor market. I’m sure Nikon would love to have another supplier to keep Sony on it’s toes.

  3. That’s a shame, the NX1 was an incredibly interesting camera, and Samsung as a company had the might to force their way into a good market share if they really tried.

It doesn’t even remotely make sense as stated though – Canon aren’t going to discontinue the 1DX if they think the D4s is better, Olympus aren’t going to discontinue the E-M10 because they think the Panasonic GX8 is better, etc. It basically means “I’m not authorised to announce discontinuation of products outside of my geographic reach or for products still in stock locally”

So, the NX1 will be announced as discontinued in other regions as it goes out of stock locally, and the NX500 and other cameras will follow.

  4. Samsung seems to practice more market “awareness” these days. First they do not release the Note 5 in Europe, now they discontinue the NX1 in Europe.

It could work but they should have more faith in their own products I guess.

Personally the NX1 is not interesting for me due to its beyond proportion bulkiness. Mirrorless should always be relatively compact with high performing sensors and relatively small lenses.

  5. This isn’t official, and considering the English errors in the story, you have to wonder if this is false. Think about it. Does this sound like a professional statement from world leader Samsung?: we will be discontinuing sales of NX1 cameras for now since there is already much better and upgraded cameras.

Much better cameras? Sounds like a Japanese rival or rival fanboy just spewing false rumors. Why would any company (especially one with leading sensor technology) proclaim in incorrect grammar that they are inferior to other choices out there? This must be bogus. Samsung may very well abandon NX, but this story and the other rumors so far don’t really hold water.

  6. Sorry to hear that, despite not being an nx1 user (nor a Samsung customer). I think the “problem” is also the fact that today there are fullframe cameras at a good price (Sony a7mark1), and perhaps these look more interesting to a new customer.

  7. On a European country they had already stopped selling all kinds of Samsung cameras on August (had to order my NX500 from Italy). Samsung is doing a huge mistake here. Unless they want to focus on consumer cameras with PRO features which is fine by me. Except from those, I can’t understand how it is possible to have the best ASP-C camera on the market and shooting yourself on the leg..

  8. Notice in the quote: ” we will be discontinuing sales of NX1 cameras for now since there is already much better and upgraded cameras.”

–What is the “much better and upgraded cameras” refer to? Sounds to me the rep is talking about releasing a new better and upgraded one. Also the rep is not talking about discontinuing sales of NX camera system.

  9. It’s sad considering how powerful this body is. The weak link is the lens availability. If this body was manufactured by another company with a different mount. It would have been a very high seller. Hey Samsung, come over to m4/3. We could use someone who wants to make a body the way you do!!

  10. Looks like almost everyone got it wrong. The latest update from the same rep is now on EOSHD forum. “Let
me rephrase what I’ve mentioned a while ago that we discontinued
manufacturing nx1 since we already producing a much better or upgraded
version, and it was developed by taking consideration some of the faults
or issue from the nx1 model.”
So there is a new modeling coming out!

  11. “We quickly adapt to market needs and demands. In Europe, we will be discontinuing sales of NX1 cameras for now since there is already much better and upgraded cameras.”

Huh? They have suddenly released NX2 and nobody noticed?

  12. Why Samsung would do that? They have the best processor by far, they have the best APS-C sensor, NX1 is awesome, S-lenses are awesome…
All they needed is to release than 300/2.8 they have shown (and matching teleconverter for it and 50-150/2.8), and “S” UWA f/2.8 zoom, and compete on prices like they did with everything else (the lenses are just too expensive – see Tamron and Sigma for correct pricing).
