Fuji X20 discontinued. X30 with 1 inch sensor to come soon?

Fuji officially discontinued the X20 (see at BHphoto). And if you remember there were rumors months ago saying that Fuji would launch a 1 inch sensor X30 this summer. It would be the first real competitor of the unmatched Sony RX100 series.

  1. Unless a follow-on model is announced in the next few weeks, it’s kind of odd to just discontinue a model of this significance.

Quite likely this is the end of the road for this line. The size of the sensor vs the size of the body is out of line with the times.

Fuji already has to rationalize its product line based on poor sales numbers. Just as the compacts have been dropping, this one may be two.

And no, Fuji has no duty to ‘respond’ to Sony. There is no indication that Sony can realize a profit on its new wonderful RX line, especially given its lofty price. Is there really a market for $800 point and shoots that will return a profit (nothwithstanding the excellence of the product)? Fuji may be taking a long hard look at what will allow it to survive.

    1. Um, why would an 800-dollar point-and-shoot not return a profit. Sorry it’s just not clear what your reasoning is.

      1. Pretty sure I asked a question, not made an assertion.

It’s up to the market to determine if it makes a profit, not you or me. Given the bottom has fallen out of the compact segment, the question is a valid one.

  2. I am really curious whether there will be a successor. X10 raised a lot of excitement, since it was something new and 2/3″ sensor was the biggest within the cathegory. However after RX100 shoke the market X10 lost it´s attractiveness and X20 did not tak much attention, despite some interesting features (OVF displaying information). So it is clear another 2/3 compact will have hard life, generally being put together with many other enthusiast compacts with 1/1,7″ sensors. Or Fuji can put a 1″ sensor in and challenge the RX100 (which could be interesting, given the X-trans technology), however this can be quite expensive to develop and recoverability is questionable. Especially when situation changed a lot within Fuji, with so many CSCs now that can substitute for large sensor compact. So I am curious how will this end up.

  3. Seems I was one of the few that was keeping this hope alive 🙂 – just seemed that there where no rumors for 6-10 months now – I have the Sony RX100 and the Fuji X20 as well as the Olympus Stylus1 in compact cameras – and they are all nice with their strengths and weaknesses –
Fuji X20 being in between the RX100/m2/m3 and the Stylus1 in many ways – to me the X20 does better in low light at 100-110mm due the fact that it has a sensor that is close to the 1 inch sensor from Sony and the fast F2.0-F2.8 lens – it had the optical viewfinder etc but of course now Sony has the RX100m3 with a nice EVF although small which is fine – I really like the images from the Fuji X20 although I know that the RX100/m2/m3 is super practical due to its small size – I suspect that I will upgrade now to the RX100m3 – to me the hot shoe was not as important as a viewfinder and a faster lens – so now we got both but now we have shorter focal length – So there is where I hope Fuji will still keep the 28-110mm F2.0-2.8 lens –
If the X30 has the same lens and now a 1inch sensor with no AA filter – Xtrans sensor – and a EVF – Same body style and few other improvements I will certainly get the Fuji X30 –
I would also love to see Touch LCD – it needs to have WIFI and NFC to please many – personally I would also like to see a On/Off switch rather then start via lens – more art filters – and maybe 1 or 2 more Fn buttons –
Both the RX100m3 and the X30 will be nice – Hopefully Fuji X30 will retain the longer focal range and same or better aperture range – these two cameras should not be compared in a way as the RX100/m2/m3 are true compact pocket-able cameras while the X10/20/30 are a bit larger and appeal more for the styling – the RX100/m/2/3 are truly the king of small compacts – the Fuji X10/20/30 is just a very attractive camera that is just a nice size and has a nice focal range without having to take extra lenses along –
So very exciting to hear that an X30 is on the way – and yes Fuji needs to improve quite a bit to match the RX100m3 –
