The E-M1 4.0 firmware features list

We got two new upcoming firmware updates:

  1. On November 18 Sony will release a major A7II firmware with 14 bit uncompressed RAW and improved autofocus.
  2. On November 26 Olympus will release the E-M1 and E-m5II firmware (Click here to read all details)

Seems like the “Fuji firmware update culture” is positively influencing all other companies!

  1. And the early supporters and adopters (E-P1 / E-P3 / E-M5) are left with no focus peaking or anything more than maintenance updates? Very nice from the company with the slogan “Love your camera longer!” This would probably take one engineer an afternoon, if that, since the code is already written for the E-P5 and above. Come On! Are the processors THAT different? Just four years old and already (Olympus’ decision) End-Of-Life. Is my hard-earned purchase of the E-M5 of any less value than those who bought the more expensive E-M1 six months later? Bad play Oly (IMHO).

      1. Please don’t take this a dig but your reply misses the point. Olympus has not taken equal care of those that supported them early in the intro of, what was seen by many pundits at the time, as an unproven, risky new format. Successful companies don’t throw good money after bad. Early adopters are who made the format a success and made the E-M1 a viable followup.
I stand corrected on the chronology but it is also not really the argument I’m making. CPU or image processor? Also not really the issue. It’s about support-after-the-sale.
Most E-M5 user have to contort their right thumb and hand way off the grip to get a semblance of focus peaking. Even if they would allow any user setting for any function button (they don’t) or add a new art filter that simulates focus peaking (#11 almost works), it would show they’re listening to the many users that want these, relative small (to program) additions.
My point is glaring above us in that brown/grey box. Loads of new features for one camera and not a minimum effort for another?!? It just ain’t that old

  2. Fuji software updates are mainly adding features that Olympus had from the start, or fixing things like implementing features that hardware has (like a button) but doesn’t do anything.
Fuji 4.0 firmware update was like 1.2 from Olympus. At the moment Olympus is leading the race clearly with the firmware update features and even ratio of features:bugs as there are so few bugs existing.
Samsung did great start (and looks as end) for features as well and was second after Olympus. Sad that people still point to Fuji as leading one, when it is easy to do when half-baked product is turned that competitor had from the start.
