Canon: Does it really matter if a camera has a mirror or not?

Richard Trestain (left) and Richard Shepherd from Canon Europe had a one hour talk with Iker Moran from Quesabesde (Click here to read the google english translation).

Those are the key points of the INterview:

– “We do not need CSC (Compact System Cameras ) because our current range covers all fields. In the future we’ll see.“
–  “It is not just in size, but of balance between performance and ergonomics. I dare not say that the is the smallest that we can build.“
– And regarding the [shoplink 100018]X100[/shoplink] Canon said: “$ 1,000 is a lot of money for a compact,”

  1. “$ 1,000 is a lot of money for a compact,”

A compact with a viewfinder, that is! Not a “real” viewfinder, just a viewfinder, not some approximate ersatz like the one on the G9.

  2. epic fail by canon.
if they continue like this they will have to concentrate on their printers in a couple of years ^^

the last interesting canon product was the 5d mark II with its video capabilities..but from that point on their new products have all been the same and the gh2 does already better video than canon.
and in photography land the nikon d700 still beats the canon hands down .. except for those whiners who want cheap 24mp but never develope any prints anyways let alone make money with their photos ^^

  3. I think Canon needs a new CEO, or marketing team?

once Nikon announced their mirrorless camera (regardless of crop factor) and when everyone settle on their favourite brand of mirrorless, ie. X100, m4/3, NEX, Samsung, Nikon, Pentax, etc) its time to say Bye Bye to Canon.

    I am a Canon DSLR user btw : )

  4. Too many marketing/management/accounting people, too few actually doing photography in Canon.
I wonder if Robert Capa or HCB would have been happy with EOS 1100D or G9?

Comparisons to Microsoft and Nokia are valid, sadly.

    1. Too much marketroids and too little photographers who also know technical side (=what is possible) can be said also about other makers in many areas.

  5. Why, yes it does make a difference if the camera has a mirror or not!

This is just a silly statement by Canon while they are playing catchup to the m43 folks.

  6. “$1,000 is a lot of money for a compact,”

Just like Steve Ballmer said, “Who would pay $600 for a cellphone?”

Haha. It’s official, Canon’s head is in the sand. It’s not innovating by choice and eventually will become borderline irrelevant, just like Microsoft. The world of tech changes so fast now, just because you’re a giant in the industry today is no guarantee it will stay that way for much longer.

  7. Having used canon for a lot of years now, it looks like I had better take the Sony and Nikon models more seriously, rather than waiting for canon to come through with the goods… 🙁

  8. they don’t get it do they! I’m off to London tomorrow I can slip a GF1 with a 20 f1.7 in my suit pocket, I can’t do that with a dSLR.

  9. I believe they will change their thoughts when they will se share lost…Soon

    Sorry for my bad English

  10. I don’t know if they’ve seen how small a GF2 is. Sounds like he’s completely unfamiliar with the concept- and utterly unfamiliar with how small the difference between APS-C and 4/3 sensors are.
Panasonic really needs to pull out all of the stops on sensor design, and there is a significant chance that they can pull even with APS-C in the same generation.
I don’t think Canon would find that amusing at all. Since they’re going for megapixels, their sensitivity numbers will suffer- if 4/3 sticks with 14-16 MP MAX and produces some cameras with only 8, we could have some specialized low light cams for that market.
That’s why Nikon has the D3, the D3x, and D3s.

  11. This is not ignorance, it’s just marketing spin. Canon have a carefully considered commercial strategy, and so far it’s been working for them. The very second that they see an advantage to competing in the CSC field from a commercial point of view, they’ll be there. While ‘the Richards’ calmly put-down the x100 and feign disinterest in CSCs, you can guarantee that Canon engineers in the back room are furiously dissecting and reverse-engineering them as they speak. They probably have well-developed ideas in r&d already.
