A ruling issued by the Japanese Intellectual Property High Court on June 30, 2026 (Case No. 10041 of 2025 (Gyo-Ke) ) may significantly change the video capabilities of digital cameras in the future. The “compressed RAW patent” of RED, which was invalidated in Japan in this trial, relates to fundamental video technology and has long been a major obstacle for many camera manufacturers.
Everything started in 2022, when Panasonic filed a request with the Japan Patent Office to invalidate RED’s patent, arguing that it combined outdated technologies. The court ruled in Panasonic’s favor.
However, this decision affects only the Japanese market, as patents are valid only in the countries where they are registered. Still, it opens the possibility of using Panasonic’s arguments and evidence in similar proceedings elsewhere. This could ultimately make it much easier for other companies to implement internal RAW recording.
