Do you remember the rumor shared last year, which said that there will be 3 non-interchangeable lenses by the end of this winter? The X100T and X30 arrived… but there was still one missing. Well, apparently the third one in the bunch will be the Fujifilm XQ2. The name has been registered at the Chinese MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People’s Republic of China)
The XQ1 was a BIG flop. So tell us in the comments, how should the Fujifilm XQ2 look like to guarantee its success?

P.S.: I remind you that, according to my sources, there will be one more MILC entry level camera soon, too.

min. 1″ sensor, EVF, swivelling display, focal length, 24-105mm, f1,8…2.8, not much bigger than a Sony RX100. 🙂
What does the “2.4GHz” imply?
A radio controlled flash?
Or just WiFi. Maybe for Instax or simply to transfer files.
The approval list said model name “2.4GHz WLAN Equipment” with model number XQ2. NOT A CAMERA!!!
for those who doesn’t know Chinese 🙂
I don’t understand. The XQ2 is not a camera?
Don’t worry. I’m 99.9% sure XQ2 is the succeeding model XQ1(if not, why FUJI does use the similar name already known for the camera?) FYI, “2.4GHz” is the radio band for devices using wi-fi and some countries are required to pre-register devices using the radio bands.
Maybe I should correct myself, 2.4GHz wireless equipment can be a camera but that’s not what it said here in this filing. (remember i was simply translating the chinese) and it’s 100%
Don’t get me wrong, i’ve been a strong follower of your site. But i just feel we can’t get the facts and translation wrong.
In my opinion, Fuji needs to focus on developing some X-Series bodies with a much improved sensor. Personally, I am waiting to see what they do with the X-Pro 2. However, I would be interested in an X-T2, if it had a new sensor with better dynamic range and resolution. They can’t keep recycling the sensor like Canon does.
Fuji has high-quality lenses with great camera designs. However, in 2015 they need to focus on providing a sensor (and proper RAW support for the sensor) that takes full advantage of the high-quality of those beautiful lenses. Once they match the sensor quality with the high-quality of their lenses, they will have a system that is hard to beat.
Agree totally. I bought the XE-1 and five lenses (14, 18-55, 35, 60 and 55-200). I always buy good lenses and the body is the throw-away, to be replaced with a better body with more/better features and, in Fuji’s case, a better sensor, etc. New lenses, small incremental changes, improved sub-standard flash are of no interest to me until I see a better processor and where Fuji is going.
The current sensor, though excellent, is not good enough for me for the cropping and other work I do. Period! I have not bought anything else since and will not until Fuji shows they are continuing with this line by providing a truly improved camera, whether X-Pro(n) or X-E(n) or X-T(n).
Regarding size, my Fuji replaces a Canon 5DII and about $30,000 Canadian in pro lenses including the rare 50 mm f1.0. The bag which once carried the 5D body and a 28-70 f2.8 lens carries ALL my Fuji gear and is lighter. The Fuji takes better photos, required relearning what I needed to know, has made photography fun again and has not got me robbed in Egypt, Jordon, Italy, France, Spain, Tunisia, etc. this past year. I did not even dare take the Canon monster out in most of these locations in the past, relying on my G series Canon which turns photo ops into ho-hum photos.
Fuji is in no hurry to cannibalize the X-T1 with a new/better model because it is selling and has at least another half year before sales peak and begin to fall. It is a great camera for Fuji newbies and those who need the few, better features it has as well as for those who have to have the newest and latest just to be able to say they have it. This is Marketing 101 and a field familiar to me.
For me, Fuji’s delay in producing an improved sensor has made me begin to look at other brands, notable Sony. Six months ago, that was not even in my thoughts and today I will begin trying out Sony products. A Fuji delay of another six months and there will be a bunch of very good Fuji equipment for sale cheap as I move on. Is anyone at Fuji listening or do really think they can do whatever they want with impunity?
Agree. I don’t really care if it’s a FF or a APSC, as long as the IQ is up to today’s top standard. But to be honest, I don’t have faith in whatever APSC Fuji can make. More than 16MP is just too heavy for APSC unless it’s the organic sensor.
If they don’t introduce the X-Pro 2 at CP+ next month, I will really question their decision to not make it full frame, as it will be obvious they have no real breakthrough in sensor technology to justify the price of the X-Pro 2 above the X-T1 with an APS-C sensor.
The X-pro 2 – if it ever comes out – must have a significant boost in image quality (resolution and dynamic range), whether it be APS-C or full frame. If they don’t have that in APS-C, they should set it apart from the other X-Series cameras with a full frame sensor, as that would provide the easiest boost in dynamic range, resolution and ISO performance. While it would need a set of new lenses, I would be willing to pay for that, if they don’t have the ability to do so in APS-C.
Perhaps they will surprise us with a much improved APS-C X-Pro 2 next month. I hope so.
Please give up on the full-frame rants. It plagues every single comment thread. It’s repetitive and adds absolutely nothing to the conversation.
Fuji X line = APSC.
Simple as that.
Full frame + autofocus = big lenses. No thanks.
What the X-Pro 2 does need is a next generation apsc sensor, and all the updates that we’ve seen introduced into every other model. Plus a few extra goodies like weather sealing to give it the “Pro” title.
ps – actual photographers I know that shoot on fuji never talk about full frame or apsc or whatever nonsense. It’s just something that continues to be parrotted on forums like this.
are you blind fuji fanboy? Fuji does not make big lenses for APS-C?
Fuji’s 50-140/2.8 is 20% bigger and heavier than comparable Canon 70-200/4. Fuji 16-55mm/2.8 reaches same size and weight than Canon 24-70/2.8. What about 56/1.2 and 23/1.4? They are as big as comparable DSLR lenses. Nikon D750 + 4 G1.8 primes, or Canon 6D + 4 primes weight only 0,5kg more than Fuji X-T1 with small grip (that you need it for equal handling) + 4 comparable primes! Mirrorless + big lenses is ridiculous idea, and Fuji hase gone this silly direction.
A lot of people I know care about the light gathering and not the DoF, so you have to compare it with a 70-200/2.8, which at 1.5kg is _50% heavier_!
Quality is actually the same – I have the Canon mark II 70-200 – the 50-140 is that good!
If you want a smaller lens, there are options (e.g. the excellent 55-200, which is slower, but also very sharp).
Look at the normal zoom options, there are now 3! One focuses on being affordable (16-50), one is super-sharp (the 18-55), and one is fast/constant aperture (16-55/2.8).
I have the 18-55 and it is a very handy travel lens and makes for a compact kit. I most likely will never buy the 16-55, but I’m glad there are options for those who want it. Yes, Fuji makes big lenses, but they also make small ones.
I think it’s fair to compare it to a FF at F4 because the FF can afford to lose about 1 stop ISO to match the shutter speed at F4 vs Fuji at F2.8.
Wrong, You can not compare APS-C f2.8 lenses to FF f/2.8 lenses. You prove you know nothing about FF benefits.
Then, you’ll finally be able to take the photos you want… Your shots will improve drastically 🙂
I am already taking the photos that I want with my X-Pro 1 and DP Merrills. I am just saying that it is time for an updated sensor. I would like to upgrade my X-Pro 1, but will not do so until there is an X-Series camera with a new and improved sensor. It has been three years since that sensor was introduced, and it is time for something new.
Why not go FF with another system? You could always get something better. Right now!
I like the design, controls, and lenses for the Fuji system. So, I am waiting to see what they have in store for the X-Pro 2. And, at the moment, my DP Merrills have better image quality at lower ISO settings than any full frame camera, so it is not a rush.
Many reasons to love Fuji, yes… 🙂
if you use merrill cameras, you are probably a slow shooter…so if you want maximum IQ, go MF, phase one and etc…plenty of options…and fuji already stated they will NOT go FF…
yep…go FF, but there is MF…so…truth be told, there is nothing to complain about modern cameras…APS-C, FF and MF..even these new 1″ sensors are great..the biggest problem still is what is operating the camera…and those who most complain about gear are the ones least worried about good photography…they are worried about good “IQ”…well good photos require good IQ from the user…
I’ve had different Nikon FF cameras, but honestly I don’t miss them after switching to Fuji 🙂
we’ll not see any x-pro2…fujfilm say “x-t1 is enough, if you don’t like you can buy sony a7II IBIS….with 16-35 OIS f4 or 35 f2.8 compact o 55 1.8 (full frame always)
With lossy compressed RAW files? no thanks.
I own XQ1 and it’s a nice pocket camera suitable for many purposes (and surprisingly good for some), but of course it’s not the best one compared to Canon G7X or Sony RX100 mk3, which are equally sized.
To compete with these more powerful compact cameras (and with those coming soon from Nikon and others), I hope Fuji has achieve more major improvements than between X20 and X30…
This means of course a bigger sensor, a brighter or wider lens, articulated screen, and something special enough to make XQ2 not only one more RX100’s clone but a really attractive compact camera.
… like the Sony RX100! 🙂
MRKIII
you have discovered the true! sony do it better
1: Get rid of the restriction of ISO 100 + 30 seconds worth of aperture and make it possible to use bulb.
2: Make it possible to use faster than 1/1000 sec shutter when using f1.8
1″ sensor, fast lens.
Most bureaucratic regimes require manufactures to obtain a special license/registration for any RF transmitting equipment, including WiFi devices. That was the case when iPhone’s specs “leaked” through FCC registration papers, that was the case with yesterday’s Russian “leak”, and that’s clearly the case here.
Now, I think everyone agrees that X-Pro 2 will include a WiFi module (maybe BT/NFC too), so we can be sure that we’ll see similar “leaks” prior to XP2 introduction. Lack of such leaks most likely means that no, X-Pro 2 isn’t even on a horizon yet.
On the other hand not all recent cameras with WiFi were leaked this way, were they?
In case of cameras, this kind of leak merely confirms camera’s existence and expexted announcement. In case of Fuji, we usually had that information leaked from other sources prior to any “authority leaks”, thus rendering them redundant and uninteresting. Just one of many possible sources.
Well it’s a little late to make suggestions to Fuji, but I want a bigger sensor and more resolution. Otherwise, there’s really nothing all that special about XQ. It is mainstream and boring. But… a nice waterproof case like the XQ1 had would be very nice.
XQ2 should feature either a 1” Sensor (X-Trans or Bayer) or a 2/3” Hybrid Organic one. In my opinion, the same 2/3 ” Sensor used in XQ1, maybe new body color options and Classic Crome would not be enough for it to sell better than it’s predecessor. However, I think it is very likely that the XQ2 will have the same lens and thus use a 2/3” sensor.
xq2? noo another compact camera
Ergonomics/styling of XF1 with 1″ sensor, at least 16MP and hopefully pop-up viewfinder ala RX100iii
Make it an updated X-S1:
-keep it sized for an adult human hand, we already have plenty of toy sized “jewelry” cameras
-60 shot raw buffer
-exposure bracketing out to +/- 2ev with up to 9 shots
-exchange the AEAF button with the video button
-replace mechanical shutter with an electronic one
-auto magnification of the center of the view when touching up the focus aka the Pany FZ1000
-much faster write speed to the memory card, at least 4x faster than the current model
-eliminate the horrid zoom creep
You might say, just buy a Pany FZ1000 as it is an improvement in “almost” every way over the X-S1. Well:
-I did, but kept the X-S1 and am glad I did.
-manual zoom is so sloppy that it is almost unusable
-manual focus is so sloppy as to be unusable
would that make it X-S2, not X-Q2?
Hopefully. I’d pay $1200 for such a camera. I’ve noticed that over the past year, new and used copies of the X-S1 have steadily been increasing in price. Sold new by Amazon, it has gone from $350 to $473 as of 2015/1/11. A good used one will cost as much as it was selling for used last year.
The key question is whether Fuji noticed the XS-1 has been increasing steadily in price.
Isn’t it in this niche that the smartphone-crisis started? No future Fuji management, think twice and concentrate all your R&D-effort onto the serious X-gear.
I don’t agree with that idea. Many photographers still need a good camera combining compactness, good IQ and advanced control, better than that smartphones can do.
And anyone can’t pay for “high-end” stuff…
Over 2-3 years the compact camera segment won’t exist anymore. Currently, we can assume the smartphone market even absorbed a lot of former DSLR users. Pay a visit to any tourist area – I hardly see anyone still using compact cameras – only smartphones, tablets & DSLRs/MLICs. To keep a finger on the trigger camera manufacturers should join the major smartphone developers and stop the over-production of colorful ranges of compacts . The reality is that they – also Fuji – complain each Q once again the numbers were down and there’s a huge margin erosion (read loss) in particular in this segment.
If compact segment really doesn’t exist anymore, the question is : why Fuji and all other manufacturers still invest in developping ‘expert’ compact cameras?
Maybe fusion with smartphone will be a key point in the next years, but looking to recent Samsung’s or Panasonic’s atempts, they are far from the goal…
The XQ1 is a great camera, tis a shame that it didn’t sell well
Replace the PASM dial with an exposure comp and a shutter speed dial, add an aperture ring… basically give the XQ1 the ergonomy and controls of a X100s.
Probably need a faster lens to go head-to-head with the competition (RX100 and G7X).
I don’t think Fuji would change the 2/3″ sensor, as it would be too much work for one single model (even the X30 didn’t get a larger sensor).
Anyway Fuji, please give us a camera that is a joy to use, not a copy of what Sony and Canon are doing 🙂
I’m afraid you’re right on sensor size, but considering the commercial failure of X30, XQ2 may be the first Fuji compact camera with another sensor…
That would be extremely unlikely, given that they just released the bigger X30 with a 2/3 sensor. Developing a X-trans 1″ sensor would take quite some time.
I agree, but who knows exactly which ways they work?
Anyway let’s hope they manage by any mean to avoid commercial suicide of this compact line for the third time!
Why engineer, release, promote, etc. a camera which have merely no chance to be sold? :-/
I’d say forget about a XQ2, the RX100’s and G7X already have saturated that segment.
On the other hand, I would love to see an X40. Give it a 1″ sensor, 24-120mm equiv. lens, manual controls, USB rechargeable batteries etc and go head-to-head with the LX100 (oh and don’t forget to include thread on the lens to add a filter!)
Bulb mode and a good underwaterhousing then I’m game…but make it a 16-35/55mm lens at f1.8-2
The XQ1 “was” a good camera in the times of the Canon S series which is now past. Fuji needs to do a MAJOR revamp on the XQ2; faster lens, ergonomics, etc. They don’t need to make it into just a copy of the RX100 the way Canon did with the G7X. They need to either so for something like the LX100 which is truly unique or something to set it apart instead of just another “me too”.
I don’t forsee much coming frim this camera. They went 3 lines on the X-xx series with the same lens. This camera isn’t going to be anything special. The x30 should have been alot more then what it is.
A 1-inch sensor in the XQ2 will be a runaway success.
I like the XQ1, use it a lot on mountain trips, when everything else is to heavy for me (X-T1 with one or more lenses, that is).
I would like to see larger sensor, like 1″ Xtrans, that would give an awesome picture quality. If the lens could be a little faster at the long end, that would also increase the value a lot, the wide end is just fine with it’s f1.8.
Another small thing would be to add a ND filter combined with up to 30 seconds exposure – for making “smooth” water.
NFC would make connection to smartphone much easier.
But one thing that would be a killer for me is to implement better video in this small package. I film a lot of video on the mountain trips, and most of it is done on the XQ1 which does a decent job. But having better video would increase the value of this camera considerably.
Only problem at this point is how or why would the five the XQ2 a larger sensor than the X30?
First off, I’d not consider the XQ1 a big flop; it’s a $350 camera and people should not compare it to $700 ones. It’s good to hope for a better sensor but at that price point, it would cannibalize the X30/X100, so if I were fuji, I’d just make it even smaller (flatter if possible), give it a faster lens like that of the X30 and throw in 4K video and make the video mode more customizable with manual options.
