_ _ _

One of the most exciting features of the X-T1 is the big, sharp, lag free EVF. It seems that the anonymous source who told us back on January 10th that “even EVF haters will have to admit that the EVF on the “new Fuji T camera” is “pretty damn nice” was right… just check out the feedback down below.

First impression

– Here are the first impressions Zhelko Dimic (from ting.com) sent me via email:

“I used to have Canon 5D Mk III, and It does remind me of a mini 5D MKIII. Serious, solid,  professional tool. But,  there is something about viewfinder I’ve never heard mentioned. When using f1.4 or f1.2 lenses, because viewfinder was so nicely large and crisp, I was able to clearly see focal plane, and famous 3D ‘pop’ of in focus person that comes from shallow DOF. It was as if I was looking at my fullscreen Apple Macbook Retina display. There was no need to visualize how picture will look like when enlarged, it was there in its all glory. This was first time in my life I got this impression, no matter what kind of viewfinder I’ve used.

Since I’ve used about 50 cameras in my life so far, including full frames, I guess other electronic viewfinders have been too small for this effect (including Sony NEX 6), and optical ones are built to present DOF that f2.8 lens has, so they don’t represent f1.2 pop. It was delightful.”

– EVF hater fotografeivindrohne hands on review here:

“To make things clear, I hate electronic viewfinders! […] But I was caught completely off guard with the X-T1. I just kept repeating ”shit shit shit this is so damn good” inside of me! No lag. No stutter. A sharp image. Completely smooth and nice. Plus good colors. And it actually took me some time to realize it was an electronic image I was looking at in the viewfinder […] And talking about focusing. The autofocus was unusually fast and snappy. Not once in that awful fluorescent light did the autofocus miss. Spot on every time. Fast and precise.”

– FR-reader Oobist spotted this article (jccrafford)”Is this the world’s first Fujifilm X-T1 wedding photographs?” and shared it via facebook:

“I can say one thing though, something I do like a LOT about the X-T1 is how light it is, for me as a wedding photographer that spend 10-12 hours at a wedding this is a very important consideration…no more back pains for me after a wedding!”

– f/otographer send me his first impressions via email:

“I got lucky and was able to check out the Fuji X-T1 at a local camera shop, Pardees Cameras, in Sacramento. The Fuji Rep had stopped by and I was able to take a few test shots.  me and the X-T1 / iso 1600 / iso 6400 / my stream /

My photos dont do the camera justice since I was unable to set it up to my shooting style and only had a brief time to play with it. But the iso 6400 shot is cleaner then anything I could ever expect from my NEX. Both photos are straight out of camera jpeg with no processing, but Im not sure of all the in camera setting such as noise reduction or sharpening. The focus peaking is very different then the Sony peaking on my NEX 7 which I am used to. The dual image focus screen option, showing both your composition and a smaller box for the split image off to the side, is amazing and must be experienced to be believed.

The build quality is wonderful and the camera feels very good in the hand, but smaller then I thought it would be. Its really not much bigger then my NEX.

Overall I think this camera is going to be a winner for Fuji. Its a nice upgrade for existing X camera owners and it should bring many new shooters to the Fuji camp. As a NEX owner that shoots mainly old manual glass this camera is on my immediate purchase radar.

I think the biggest difference here to me, as a current Sony shooter, is that Sony views cameras as just as another consumer electronic item. For instance, Sony sees no difference in a Sony Blu Ray player, a Sony alarm clock and my NEX 7.

Fuji on the other hand understand that while a camera is indeed a consumer electronic item it is also more then that. It is a tool that is used by an artist to create art. And an artist can be inspired by and have pride in his tool. The design of the X-T1 clearly shows that the whole “By photographers, for photographers” thing at Fuji is not just hype. There are some serious photographers at Fuji who are having major input on the design and function of these cameras. As a photographer and a consumer who buys electronic items this camera is just plain done right.

It simply puts the Nikon DF to shame.”

NOTE: Rico started a 10-24 sample set (full size SOOC, including X-T1 RAF’s converted with Iridient) on Flickr here… stay tuned for his first look soon.

have a good start in this new week,

    1. Same here, coming from an entry level DSLR I absolutely love my X-E1. The fact that they made a camera to try and change people’s minds about EVF just shows how much they listen and know the market.

  1. This EVF would be perfect for video work. When will Fuji finally give us a decent code and a cinematic 24 fps? Given all the improvements they’ve done they should throw a bone to video.

  2. It is rather amusing how the rumour sites be it Sony, Fuji and especially mFT scour the net in a desperate hunt for posts that support the biases of the site holder. The credibility of the poster doesn’t matter, the accuracy of the data doesn’t matter all that matters is that the message is pro agenda. Example above the “f/otographer” is an amateur photographer simply spouting his opinion which is cool, but in the end it is just an opinion with no special merit other than being pro the agenda. The post about the DF is of particular amusement the DF is a niche DSLR designed for a select group of users, it is indeed a pricey option and while not for me there is little doubt that even a niche DSLR such as the DF will vastly outsell the X-T1

The recent data for Japan by far the most successful market for mirrorless, suggests that Fuji share of the mirrorless market was 2.0% maximum.

    “ Olympus 29.1%, Sony 26.4%, 14.2%, Panasonic, Ricoh imaging 9.8%, 9.34% Nikon, Canon 9.25 percent””

Those numbers add up to 98%

    http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=ja&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fbcnranking.jp%2Fnews%2F1312%2F131227_27056.html

Worldwide mirrorless market share is approx. 19% with DSLRs making up 81% , if the sales numbers in Japan were reflected worldwide giving Fuji 2% of the 19% mirrorless market Fuji would make up a miniscule .4% of the world interchangeable lens camera market. What share do you think the most expensive Fuji model will have of this market? It is beyond ludicrous to suggest anything Fuji does will have an impact on the DSLR market let alone a devastating one.

    1. Got up with the wrong foot?
Nobody in this post said the X-T1 will outsell the DF, they just think it is a much better interpretation of the retro-dslr concept. And guess what? It clearly states that these are opinions and first impressions!!
What’s your gripe with these rumors sites, that are by definition biased towards a particular brand/system?
And the market share is just one of the reasons these websites promote their brand/system: the more people are attracted to it and buy it, the more the system evolves and survives…thus giving us the options and the products we love!
So go troll somewhere else, maybe on websites without any bias (are there any at all out there?).

      1. Oh dear you fanboys are so sensitive lol. If you think irrelevant random posts by assorted amateurs dug up by admin are of any real value that’s fine. Fanboy hype is one of the most off putting things to a potential buyer, I would never buy an Olympus product for that exact reason.

There are numerous non-biased review and technical sites around, or do you follow the fanboy belief that any site that dare point out any issues with your favorite brand are obviously biased. I came here to read about the X-T1 and links to proper resources help me find out about it.

Not one of my points was against the camera I think the X-T1 looks to be a fine camera and though quite limited compared to other lens systems I like the choice and speed of the lenses currently available for X mount

        1. I’m not bothered by any criticism to any camera, I think cameras are just tools.
I visit this rumor site because I use the Fuji X system, just because it suits me. I’m well aware of Fuji cameras’ shortcomings, and I have to work around them. No camera is perfect, and I think that FW-wise Fuji really has issues when they release cameras but they rock for user support and updating the cameras.
I’m not a fanboy, I dislike this childish “mine is better than yours” mantra, it just shows insecurity and superficiality.
But, my point was about the nature of the resources presented here and on other rumors sites: the opinions and impressions come from users like you and me, and not from pixel-peepers in a dimly lit office trying to understand if the fake grass on their wall is better rendered on this camera rather than that one…that’s pointless.
Any camera today, from 1 inch sensor up, is capable of great results. It all boils down to what you really need, and not to “who has the bigger/better gear” out there.
So let’s get rid of the fanboy label and let us read what our peers think of the new gear that’s being released, without criticizing the guys that run the sites in their own free time without asking us a penny for all the material we can enjoy.
By the way, I’m not interested in buying the X-T1, in don’t need it for what I do…sure, I would love one, but that is overkill!
Having said so, I sure like other mirrorless systems, and I would love to have a DSLR as well…to each camera it’s own strengths.
I hope I clarified my position qnd the reason I criticized your post.
          Regards

        2. “Fanboy hype is one of the most off putting things to a potential buyer, I would never buy an Olympus product for that exact reason.”

You choose your gear based on the number of fanboys it attracts? Interesting strategy…

          1. Given the anti fanboy strategy, this guy surely just needs to buy an x system. Actually my guess the camera with least fanboys would best match op: hassel lunar. 🙂

    2. It rather amusing how people come to a company/product focused website and act shocked – shocked! – to discover that the site and it’s visitors actually like the company/product.

Also, there’s the fact that the site title has the word ‘Rumors’ in it. As opposed to, say ‘Fuji Objective and Independently Verified Facts and Completely Unbiased Opinions’ which would be an extremely unwieldy URL and the site you’re apparently looking for. You’re not even commenting on a specific claim made by the author of the site, you’re complaining about the content/credentials of a third party link; which anyone is free to view and judge the value of. But thank you for protecting us from the dangers of random links on the Internet; apparently before you got here, we were all under the impression that anything that this site linked to carried the same inexorable weight as the laws of nature.

If it bother’s you that much, perhaps you should register a domain (I hear ‘fujiobjectiveandindependentlyverifiedfactsandcompletelyunbiasedopinions.com is available) set up your own site and show us how it’s done.

    3. as much as i really really like fuji bob is right. this is fact vs desire.
That isnt to say that Fuji arent gaining market share but the figures are there. Black and white, there is nothing to discuss in that regard.

      1. Actually, Fuji’s total sales and market share are both decreasing each year,
And as you might have understood from the post, the 2% are actually the entire market minus Olympus, Sony, Panasonic, Ricoh imaging, Nikon, and Canon.
Do you think that somewhere in some Lieca forum, people say “Oh, so we have 2% of the market now, that’s great!”

    4. “Example above the “f/otographer” is an amateur photographer simply spouting his opinion which is cool, but in the end it is just an opinion with no special merit other than being pro the agenda.”

A few things about this strike me as a bit colorful Bob. First of all you make amateur sound almost like an insult, like my ‘opinion’ might have more merit if I were a professional. The end result of photography is not to attain the status of being paid to do it, although that is a worthy personal goal if you so desire it. Rather the end result of photography is the creation of a compelling and moving image. And ‘no special merit’? Well tell me Bob, what does an opinion need to have ‘special merit’? Would you be so kind as to write a Wikipedia entry on how to ensure ones opinions can attain this special merit so the next time I choose to express myself in a public forum I can make sure what I write passes muster for you?

Heres a little secret…I neither expect nor require anyone to share my opinion, you included.

And spouting? Really? Thats a bit of a trollish response. I had a chance to view and use a pre production camera that is on my list to possibly purchase and I shared my personal views of that camera with a site that I know has an audience of people who might be interested in hearing those views. Welcome to the internet Bob.

And if you actually read what I wrote you can see that I am a current Sony user, and I have been for a while. I actually went out to test the Sony A7 with some manual glass before I ended up at Pardees that day and was fortunate enough to get to see and shoot with the X-T1. Im hardly a fan boy with a ‘pro agenda’ as you say. Quite the opposite. I quickly realized that an X-T1 and speedbooster combo will be slightly more expensive then the Sony A7…thus my desire to test each camera to see which fits my needs better. However my sentiments as to the two different corporate philosophies is both valid and true. At least from my perspective.

“It is beyond ludicrous to suggest anything Fuji does will have an impact on the DSLR market let alone a devastating one.”

Will the X-T1 have a devestating effect on the DSLR market alone? Of course not. However, the paradigm shift that the X-T1 and cameras like it are part of most definitely will.

And sorry, the DF is still a joke. The DF is to Nikon what the EOS M is to Canon. Its the misguide belief of a moribund corporation that it can package any old thing and sell it to the masses as something its not.

Im sure Nikon will sell quite a few. As P.T. Barnum said….”Theres a sucker born every minute.”

      1. Your are obviously entitled to your opinion its the fact that admin sees fit to link to your thread as support for the agenda that is the problem. There is no paradigm shift in the X-T1 it is just another mirrorless camera in a faux DSLR design. From a company with at best 0.4% of the interchangeable lens camera market. And when the dust settles it will have the same weaknesses as all other mirrorless cameras including pathetic C-AF and tracking. The point is that fanboy “i love my camera” threads are worse than useless for anyone who wants to find out the truth about a camera they may be interested in buying.

There are 2 ways to look at the DF either it is overpriced ,overhyped { I am in this camp } Or you can look at it as a camera for long term Nikon users with full support for their lenses going back 50yrs { no need for bolt on adapters ,which only allow stopped down metering} which just happens to have the best high ISO sensor currently available. It will sell in many multiples what the X-T1 does

      2. @f/otographer

I agree that the Canon eos M sucks big time nonetheless it managed to be the second biggest selling mirrrorless camera in Japan.

        http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/2013-sales-sony-nex-5r-is-the-most-sold-mirrorless-camera-in-japan/

Not one Fuji body camera it into the top 20 models a list that includes 2 Nikon 1 models and 3 models of the damn Pentax Q..The lowest share of unit sales on this list is 1.2%. Which means that the “BEST” selling Fuji did not even manage to sell 1% .Fuji is a fantastic set up I do not understand its low sales

  3. The measure of how good the quality of an electronic viewfinder is is how closely it matches an SLR reflex viewfinder of say 40 years ago.

The closer the match, the more we gush over today’s tiny tv screen and the more we say, not how good SLR viewing has really been all along, but boy SLRs are stupid, still-not-really-as-good is obviously superior.

  4. I love my X-Pro, but is it just me or at least in those wedding pictures the skin tones look horrible… Completely orange and very digital/smooth… if I wanted that I’d buy a Canon or a Sony.

Also does anyone know yet if you can lock out the locks? from what I’ve seen its impossible to change ISO without pushing and holding down that button, please say it aint so!

It’s so nice how the layout is on the rest of the X-Line… FN= ISO, Aperture on the front, Shutter Speed on-top…the way it should be… I used to tell people that Fuji Engineers are the only ones who understand photographers…. now I’m wondering, especially with all the crap Nikon got for the DF’s ergonomics…. why did they mess with that formula?

    1. @ John:
      There may be different factors:
      1. ISO in those shots with orange/ yellowish skin tones is very high (ISO4000) which also means no flash most likely.
      2. I see those bad skin tones only in the shots with artificial lighting – may be a WB issue.
      3. Indeed Fuji seems to have changed the color output starting with the X-E2. I had that camera briefly till I gave it back because I found the upgrade too small but mainly because I found the colors to be “funky”. It is beyond me why Fuji changes the most praised quality of the X cameras: color. Seems they have pushed the yellow/red/ orange spectrum. If this is confirmed over the next months, I will keep my two X-E1s till they fall apart.

  5. Got to handle the new T camera with the new 56 on Friday at the Fuji launch in Toronto, Astounding in every way, excellent viewfinder environment (your own cinema theatre) and the 56 is one hell of a piece of glass. Be very afraid Nikon and Canon, this is a game changer at a fair price for this Quality product.

    1. Oh, c’mon! What do Canikon have to do with this?
They don’t even notice it’s presence! Just enjoy the choices we have, it’s not a football game where you are the supporter!

      1. I agree with Glenn Brown. Those old farts and Slowpokes (Nikon and Canon) shoulde learn, what innovations and customers wiches means. Before I was Nikon’s fan, for long years. But last years I completely disappointed with Nikon and Canon.

      2. I agree with Glenn Brown. Those old farts and Slowpokes (Nikon and Canon) should learn, what innovations and customers wishes mean. Before I was Nikon’s fan, for long years. But last years I completely disappointed with Nikon and Canon.

      3. I did not mean to knock Nikon and Canon but I switched to fuji and had to sell a lot of gear that I thought I would have for ages. Nikon’s Mirrorless camera is a joke. Looks like Nikon and Canon are the new Blackberry.

  6. any words about EVF behaviour during playback?
with XP1 and latest firmware in EVF “only” mode i can use EVF to compose and LCD for image playback, it seem the same with XE1 and X100, but using an X-E2 it seem impossible to set in the same way.

i mean, EVF is used even for playback and menus.

how about the X-T1? is it possible to compose with evf and use LCD for playback?

    1. Yes that’s possible I set that up last Friday and focused using the evf and then just press play to view image in LCD same as my xe1

  7. I’ve had a quick go on the XT1 last Friday at a trade show here in Manila love the evf … Waiting for a raw converter for windows to have a look at some of the pics I took.

Anyway I noticed on a few vids like the one above and when I was using the camera that the AF box was quite large, I tried the same setting to change it as on my XE1 but the AF box didn’t change size. I must have been doing something wrong as for sure there’s a way to make the AF box smaller as like the Xe1 and other fujis don’t ya think ???

  8. Looks like after serial shots lcd displays black stripe and thinks for some time (see grey circles behind af zone) really interesting how the evf do that serial shots, is it really doese not have this lags?

  9. Again, here you can see the stutter of the both the EVF and LCD right after the AF lock. The refresh “jumps” to catch up. This is particularly noticeable when the camera moves. This was true from the introduction of the x100. How anyone can use the EVF, or LCD for professional candid photography with such a glaring flaw, is a mystery.
