According to a trusted source, a new firmware update for the X-T1 is coming. I don’t know when exactly (working on it), but it should not take long for X-T1 shooters to be able to update their camera. And it shouldn’t be just a simple bug fix, according to the source… so is a new Kaizen-firmware on the way?
Now, keep in mind that release dates for firmware updates are tricky… and X100 owners know exactly what I’m talking about, when Fuji postponed their update several times. But, in this case, if there are no surprises, it should not take long.
stay tuned… if I can dig up something more about this new firmware (and find out if other X-series cameras will get a new firmware too) I’ll post an update.
And of course, any help is appreciated. Just contact me at fujirumor [at] gmail.com or 100% anonymously using the rumor box (and eventually use a nick-name, so that I can identify you in future).

Direct printing to Instax from all cameras would be fun. And would sell some printers and film.
THIS. What a great idea!
Actually, on dedpxl Zack Arias said on March, that “I hear they will soon be able to connect directly to a WIFI Fuji X camera.”
That’s awesome. And so is Zack! But didn’t Fuji just release a firmware for a bunch of cameras that connects them to Instax, but some of the flagships missed out on getting the feature in this round? I bet we see it eventually.
Yeah just noticed that :/ But would be weird if the upcoming update wouldn’t include this possibility.
this. i love that printer but it ticks me off to have to jump hoops through my smart phone. i’d be burning film like crazy if this was available.
Instant reciprocity for gracious portrait subjects. And so fun. Sure, there are Instax cameras, but this appeals to me more and builds a Fuji ecosystem that feels pretty unique
4k video 🙂
Not saying 4k would be a bad thing, but how about actual 1080p at great quality first? With 10-bit log ProRes or DNxHD codec and good dynamic range, like on the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera? With the exception of Magic Lantern Raw (which you cannot even play back properly on the camera), nobody in the stills world has managed to get to this quality level yet. And if it came down to it, I’d take a 120 fps option over 4K any day since it opens up more creative possibilities.
There are very few people who can even play back 4k at this point, let alone tell the difference unless you show them both side by side if we are talking about the general public. Shooting 4k in order to end up with nice looking HD is also a bit strange, considering you could just as well get HD right in the first place. As far as I am concerned, 4k with today’s stupid consumer codecs, aliasing, small dynamic range and limited consumer playback options is just a marketing fad so far. I’d rather have a camera that is great at what it does than an ultra high resolution one that kind of sucks. Besides, most Hollywood cinematographers will routinely add diffusion when shooting 2K or higher (talking about Alexa/Red quality 2K of course) since that level of sharpness is just not very flattering to the human face.
So, not in any way against 4k, but I’d like to see the actual quality of the files improve a lot before we try to raise the nominal resolution.
+1 for the 120 fps
Did you notice his username is ‘Not interested in’? 😉
No I didn’t, totally missed that!!! 😀
Make the video button a custom button, and a better way to select focus point would be the two things I’d like to have.
I have assigned all four directional buttons to select focus points. Works like a charm. =)
Fuji x100s gets the least update love 🙁
Yeah, I’m still hoping for an update to improve autofocus speed/accuracy. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long! If they improve the AF and maybe add exp comp in M mode, I’ll be a happy camper!!!
why would you want exposure comp in manual mode? That doesn’t make any sense.
Try using auto ISO in M mode and you’ll see why. I like the convenience of auto ISO in M mode but there are times where I need to make exposure changes with either shutter or aperture changes but due to auto ISO the exposure stays the same. With exp comp, you would be able to change the ISO to give either + or – exp comp. Hope that makes sense. My Nikon cameras have this and it’s very nice.
Agreed. It seems people often overlook the third variable in exposure.
For people, like myself, coming from the film era, I agree that iso changes and auto iso are counter intuitive. They go against years of training 🙂
And even those not from the film-era!
Because normally, it’s not supposed to be a variable!
That’s simply not true! Even in the days of film, ISO (or ASA) was always a variable, just not one you changed every shot (unless you were using sheet film). And now that we have digital cameras where changing ISO is as simple as changing shutter speed, why on earth would you not change it?! I grew up with film, but I appreciate the convenience of digital. Only a luddite would not change ISO for the sake of it.
I think? he meant changing EC while on manual. It’s a convenience thing but when I was first learning I was always taught that exposure compensation was useless in manual. Digital makes it possible but it can also be easily forgotten that you did it.
Obviously .. by your own hands it’s supposed to be.
So you agree that it’s a variable then (by virtue of it changing)? But you’re only allowed to change some variables by ‘your own hands’? So having automatically changing variables is out? So P, A and S modes are also crimes against nature? The fact is that ISO is the only one of the variables that makes little to no difference to the content of the image, so why not have full control of the variables that do? Control your shutter speed to get the right amount of blur and aperture to get the right DoF, and let the camera do the maths (it’s what computers are designed for afterall). So let the camera do the maths and then for extra creative effect, allow you to fine tune the exposure, so you gain a bit of control back from the computer.
Got nothing against Auto-ISO man .. there are just some big flaws in the way it is implemented.
I agree. Although technology achieved great high iso performance these days, I can still see all the advantages for shooting at base iso: color accuracy, detail, dynamic range.
When I go manual I go all manual. Actually ISO is the last variable I would put on auto.
Not really true in a sense with Fujifilm sensors being ISOless? In JPEG, you’re just doing a software compensation, and in RAF, you have to correct for in post. So, using ISO in manner is not changing anything unless in JPG, which lets camera do software adjustment, exposure is same.
I don’t know about being iso-less, up to ISO1600 at least there is a big difference software gain and hardware gain, no? So i wouldn’t stop using it altogether just yet, but indeed i rarely go above 1600 unless, rather underexpose, unless it’s really just too dark for that too.
Instead i’d rather have a quick way to get OUT of Auto-ISO.
At least on the original X100 i have to dig way into the menu.
WHY isn’t it just at the bottom of the ISO selection!? (Fn)
Basically the way it is on the X-T1 iso-dial, only digital.
I don’t use it now, simply because it takes too much time to get out and get full control back. Many people who don’t get how the camera works it’s because of this, and i can see why because with Auto ISO on it seems to have a mind of its own. Selecting ISO manually doesn’t work, as it only changes the minimum, and you CAN’T use manual until you find how to turn Auto-ISO off. It’s crazy.
I use to feature all the time on my Nikon to control power output of remote flash. It should also work with on-camera flash.
Then there’s the option of Auto-ISO like SangYuP said below 😉
Hopefully something to help battery life!
Manual movie mode and a better bit rate would be awesome.
Bitrate is fine, it’s the processing that’s terrible. Can’t just fix everything by adding more bitrate that doesn’t change anything but the filesize.
You’re right, MJr. The processing does need more work and throwing more bitrate at the problem won’t fix it. Especially, the 1080 60p footage. Crossing my fingers that this issue will be addressed.
Bitrate is 36Mbps which is literally above the BluRay average. And there are some pretty stunning movies out there on BluRay i tell ya. 😉
Blu-ray is a final product. One needs high bitrate raw footage to create those stunning movies, to have room for grading, shodow/highlight pulling, etc.
That said, fuji is far from utilizing the full capabilities of 36 mbps bitrate, I agree.
Exactly and that’s why we have 36, and not 20 or even less as is more common. Unless you’re making a professional movie there is plenty of room for some basic editing and transcoding the end result with 36. Or ‘would be’ if it was actually usable footage. It’s not very likely they would go from worst in the business to professional use.
You’re right. I keep hoping it’s a software issue but it could be a hardware issue as well (missing some video encoding hardware that would actually render better videos with the same or lower bit-rate).
While my X-E2 is not a video camera it would be nice to fix this issue and make for a more rounded offering.
Very true, i don’t get why some ‘photographers’ are so against video. Do they associate video with cellphones, handycams and youtube or something? I guess the quality is the problem, i don’t use it the way it looks now either, but that’s no reason the be against it entirely.
What Sony’s doing now with XAVC-S, now that i would use. That is video that actually looks like moving images rather than handycam material. That is of course after you learn to use it well. Apart from composition and maybe exposure, your photography skills are going to be no use at all when shooting video, that’s often forgotten. 😉
I need a ‘good change’ on my X-T1 buttons. Checked a new camera in the store. What a big difference in button-feel with my early series X-T1! Any news on Fuji up-dating the hardware too?
Just send it in to Fuji and specifically ask for the button problem to be fixed. I did that (UK) and they fixed mine so its now exactly like newer ones
Thank you AMS! I will contact Fuji next week to get mine fixend as well!
Just stress that you want it fixed I had to resend mine after they just fixed the light leak first time around
Anyone know aprox how much they will take to fix light leak + buttons? On my country there is no Fuji Service to send it, and I’m traveling to USA/Miami on November… so wondering if I could send it there…
I did exactly this in the US and got nowhere 2 months ago. Anyone in the US have success?
Hoping it adds AEB +/-3 and either 3, 5, or 7 shots
Plus 1 on this request, for me this is Fuji’s biggest pain point and arguably so easy to fix!
My other ask would be for the camera to remember the timer delay settings if you turn the camera off and then on.
With these two I’d be a VERY HAPPY guy 🙂
I would also like to see this. Until then I will continue to use the Camera Remote app for bracketed shots. It allows +/-3 and as many shots as you like without disturbing the camera. You can obviously even change the focus point if you wish.
What about XE-2 update?
Hope Fuji has not forgotten about X-E2 users. There are some serious issues to fix and improve, e.g. High Iso JPEGs IQ and AF performance.
HSS support needs to be next so that no more DSLR required, oh and keep working on improving the AF speed.
But will it make Safari snappier? Oh, wait… never mind
Looking for MacRumors?
Indeed. Sorry, i’m so bored today.
Lol, just wait 5 minutes and macrumors will do one of their paid samsung threads. At least it seems that way with all the samsung stuff they post there.
Yep. It’s a very different site now than it used to be
Improve manual focus: allow changing size of focus area on manual focus (helps refine focusing when using AF-L button to focus, and improve a little the bad back focus implementation). Also improve AF-C when on manual focus using the AF_L button… the same thing, it works like cr…p, while Continuous focus works fine on Continuous mode + half shutter press. I believe there is a bug that makes AF-L on Manual never lock focus and going out of focus even after the green light for in focus is reached, while on the same conditions but setting focus dial to Continuous focus (instead of Manual), the focus is correctly locked half pressing the shutter. All this makes back button focus unusable… a real pitty. And would be great to have a firmware to fix hardware dial buttons :P…
Yes, we definitely need manual movie control on the Fuji. It only makes sense as all the dials are there on the X-T1 and can be used for stills, why not video too? This is one update many users have been asking, and is already available on many competitors, so why not update it, Fuji?
The ability to control flash from full power to 1/64. As the Ricoh GR let you do. That would nice for the X100/X100s as well.
Well it would be nice, but i think you’d be better off getting the EF-X20 flash that already does have these controls, instead of using that silly little flash that they include in the box. 🙂 But yeah it’s expensive. 🙁
The truth is that I have the X-20. Very handy. But I don’t take with me systematically… Nor do I take the small XT1 flash either. I guess my comment is more directed to the X100 with it’s on board flash.
I have the EF-X 20 and EF-42 and can’t recommend either of them to any serious photographer. All Fuji flashes are amateur-intended. Compared to Nikon & Canon they are still nowhere in accessory-design and very far from a solid, premium solutions and this is one of the things I regretted the most with Fuji since there is also not a kind of ‘third market support’. I know that many will state that higher ISOs solve the problem and in other circumstances you’ll need Elinchrome-alike stuff anyhow, but that’s a bit too easy. The EF-X20 is a weak, fixed flash hardly able to fulfill the role of a fill-in purpose and the EF-42 may not fire more than 10x at once or it can get broken. Most of all it doesn’t use the IR-assistance for the AF so that one is pumping like hell. Well event photographers, I’d like to see your workflow when even ISO6400 doesn’t solve the story anymore.
Well, that’s true also.
Be truly revolutionary: announce third party software support!
Hmm, i don’t know. Might just make a big mess out of it, i don’t think it’s that kind of ‘toy’. Should be about maximum reliability imho. And something like this would still have to be managed at the cost of Fujifilms time and money.
Plus i doubt there are many tweakers out there for such a niche system, well, it’s getting bigger. But even Samsung had some kind of Android camera didn’t they, haven’t heard a thing about it beyond the announcement. Does it still exist ?
What kind of ‘apps’ were you thinking about ?
The first manufacturer to announce that kind of support will get all the computer guys + photographer (and there are many, a lot of IT guys also double up with amateur photgraphers) converging and buying their cameras, guaranteed. Look at the sheer number of apps available for IOS and Android! I one could get the Fuji quality AND the ability to tweak / enhance / add …. that would be a killer or so I believe.
And if there is a ‘reset to manufacturer specs’ button there is no risk to Fuji. If you have an issue, press it and it is back to initial state.
Exactly what I was thinking.
This is good an all, but I suspect that these people are not the type that share my aesthetic of “good camera design”. Not to disparage software developers, I’m one myself, but most of what I need from a camera is done from physical buttons and dedicated dials.
The more they fix or improve it, the longer it’ll take for them to get me to buy it. Maybe I should wait for X-T2
Welcome in the Fuji realm. As a first wave X-Pro1 I’ve gone through the worst firmware hell ever… it took Fuji about 6 months to get the AF working ‘more or less’ as in any other compact camera. Yes, they were able to turn this piece of electronic sh*t into something that is now worth to be called a good camera, but quite a few of disturbing quirks and hick-ups still exist and the overall ergonomics of this camera is still something that can use a drastic upgrade. Designing and engineering things first time right seem to be impossible in the X-series R&D dept. I’m not saying Fuji doesn’t have competences, but a 70% OK solution is just not the same as a 99%-one, as competition is clearly able to develop & manufacture, and the first time right.
Improve commander mode flash, so it doesn’t affect exposure so much!
The one firmware change that I would have to see before I bought a X-T1 is that of making the exposure reading point the same as the focus point. The present system of the exposure reading being taken from the centre of the screen, no matter where the focus point is actually positioned, is completely nonsensical
It surprises me that a company like Fuji, with all their photographic experience, could produce a camera clearly aimed at experienced photographers with such a basic operational fault. And no I don’t want to focus and recompose, it is an extra step which shouldn’t be necessary and can, and does, lead to focusing errors with wide aperture lenses.
My X-E1 has spot metering; the X-T1 is no different.
Mine too, but Tankerman is right: the spot is always at the center and does not follow the focus point. I can see where / when it could be useful to have that option.
I already have an X-E1 with the 18-55 and 55-200 zooms, and now use them far more than my D700 for the same reason as many others, quality/colour balance of the jpegs and light weight.
However my main interest is portraiture, I have both the 85D and 105 DC Nikkors, and being able to focus on and accurately expose the face of the subject, at the same time, when it is offset from the centre of the frame is essential. Neither my X-E1 or the X-T1 does this, which is why I am keeping my D700. However if the Fuji X-T1 firmware update rectifies this then, given the quality of the 56 F1.2 I will very seriously consider swapping the D700 for the X-T1.
Thanks for the clarification. I too have Nikon cams, and I assume that Fuji cams’ exposure system would be similar to other brands. I didn’t know this actually. I would have to reread the manual on this topic.
Damien, glad my reply helped, I too assumed that the focus and exposure points were the same when the focus point was moved off centre when I bought my X-E1.
He never said the XT1 doesn’t have spot metering….of corse it does. But the “spot” in your spot metering is always centered regardless as to where the focus point is.What he and many others would like is to be able to move the “spot” in witch the readings are being taken to other positions other then center.Sorry to burst your bubble, but your X-E1 doesn’t do that.
This is perhaps not the right place, but with so many Fuji users around… Could someone please point me to a place where I can download a few good and real life RAW files from the XT1 so that I can test them in several raw converters and see for myself how good (or bad) they are?
I’ve downloaded some fullsize jpgs and loaded them into some raw converters and was shocked by how ‘smudged’ they were. Not good at all, more like my first digital camera ;). Sure, I’ve seen beauitfull images, but my D700 can do that too.
By the way, I’m testing images on a Linux computer, using RawTherapee, DarkTable, PhotoNinja, Lightzone and Aftershot Pro.
Once you’ve made up your mind, I would not mind some sort of message here, I am a Linux user too and for now I run Windows + LR5 just for that. I have not tested the latest DarkTable nor installed the current beta of RT which are both supposed to have made good progress with Xtrans sensors. as for RAF files, I am not home so can’t help you there before another 2 weeks. If you request is not answered at that time, feel free to ask again on http://www.fujix-forum.com/ I look at it daily and will be able to send you a couple of files
I suggest you just rent an XT1 for a month.
It’s the same as the X-E2 so if you find those around you can use them. Also dpreview’s reviews include downloadable files. Other review sites have some as well.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Fuji introduces 4K like Olympus is about to do, as I heard that the X-Pro 2 is being announced next month, and that it will have 4K. If they can add that in a firmware update like Olympus is apparently going to do, I am sure they are considering that to keep the X-T1 competitive with the OMD. Who knows…we will know soon enough. I am just hoping that my friends are right and X-Pro 2 will be announced next month.
Please add name filename with the FilmMode in the filename … or in differente sub-folder … to be appreciate when manage photo and sort it ! when I use BRK FIlmMode it’s not fun .. i would like to abe quikly find all B&W shoot 🙂
Exiftool is too borning to use ^^
Yawn… still waiting on color focus peaking for the xpro1….
It is guaranteed that there will be (at least) a firmware update before the end of the year, if anything just to make the cameras compatible with the new xf 50-140 mm f/2.8 r ois wr… Question is whether or not there will be another one on top of this one
Dear FujiFilm, please do not forget the X-E2!
X-E2 Firmware Update – Feature request:
1) Add the possibility to assign a “SWITCH view mode” to any function button. (SWITCH without the need to look at a menu!)
2) Retain 3 different “view mode” settings for the 3 different operating modes:
– Shooting mode –> EVF Only + Eye sensor to turn EVF on/off.
– Playback mode –> Eye sensor: Automatic display selection using the eye sensor.
– Change Settings mode –> Eye sensor: Automatic display selection using the eye sensor.
By giving this possibility, the photographer should be very rarely in the need to change View Mode settings.
3) Faster (more acurate) AF with moving subjects and wide apertures.
4) Auto ISO: Minimum shutter speed: Dynamic 1/focal lenght.
5) Wireless: Remote release / Full remote control.
6) Wireless: Tethering.
Hoping that this update adds support for the Instax SP-1!!
