Take it with a grain of salt, but that’s the story: A Canadian FR-reader had a talk with a Fuji-rep at Quebec’s photo & video. The Fuji-rep told him that there will be an X-E1 firmware update “very soon”, but he didn’t tell anything about the details of the update… so you’re still free to fly with you imagination. What would you like to have improved? Villi Asgeirsson said on the FR-facebook wall that he’d like to have full manual control in video mode.
The FR-reader couldn’t tell me if the update will be compatible also with the X-PRO1. But in the past Fuji updated both cameras contemporaneously. So let’s hope also this time.
I remind you that back in July (see here) there where rumors saying for example that focus peaking on the E1/PRO1 will get more colour options.
If true, it seems that we could have another Kaizen-day right in time for X-mas!
But remember, the X100 firmware update was scheduled for September (or even earlier), but Fuji was able to release it only in October (btw, well worth the wait!). Delays are always possible. So I’ll believe it only when I see it ready for download at Fuji’s global website.
Have a good start in this new week.

Face Detection! 🙂
(No more lost toddler pictures)
+1
Even if they implemented face detection, what does make you think it will be faster than the auto focus of the camera itself?
The X-E2 has a faster processor enabling new features like face detection. That is why i believe they won’t implement it in the X-E1. But even if they did, how fast and usable will it be?
How about the X100S?
I am hoping Face Detection on X100S Firmware upgrade if any.

I had a few wishes for a FW (or for the X-Pro2) update:
– minimum shutter speed for auto ISO (manual)
– auto minimum shutter speed x0.5, x0.25 for the use of lenses with OIS
– more colors for focus peaking
– a menu where one can choose several manuell lenses and those EXIF data is stored in the picture
– auto ISO up to the highest ISO setting (users of a X camera should know how to deal with noise)
– why no RAW with the highest ISO? We know how to deal with noise in post.
– consistent file naming.
– NO two button affair for choosing the AF point. Thats my greatest gripe – i am used a faster operation (1DX).

You know you can select focal length for manual lenses and have it written to the EXIF already, right? You can’t put in full names or max apertures, but you can do focal lengths. It can store up to 5. 24mm, 28mm and 35mm (I think…don’t have my X-E1 in front of me right now) are fixed, with two adjustable ones.
Jupp, i know. But apperture would be great also. I have some focal lenght more then one time. 😉
If you are familiar with using command line tools on your computer then I would highly recommend exiftool.
I use my X-E1 only with manual lenses and I’ve written a small script on my mac that, with the help of exiftool, identify photos taken with a manual lens and add the correct lens information to the exif data based only on the focal length information that X-E1 writes to the exif. So for me it doesn’t matter what lens I choose in the lens menu in camera as long as I update my script to use the same focal length to identify that lens.
I only had to modify my workflow slightly by copying the images from SD to disk first and running my exiftool script before I import them into lightroom, instead of importing them directly from sd card.

Firmware (Shooting Mode):
– Auto ISO: factor for minimum shutter-speed customizable; Auto ISO settings grouped as in X20
– Less obtrusive display overlays as in the X20, but customizable
– Information on exposure compensation hidden when set to zero
– Separate values for RGB channels in histogram
– “Always on” AF point selection without pushing another button (as in Oly OM-D)
– More options selectable for Fn buttons (e.g. flash exposure compensation)
– All arrow buttons* and AF button assignable as Fn buttons (*as user option only if continuous AF point selection is not selected)
– Q menu customizable (e.g. for flash exposure compensation)
– Camera “remembering” selected intermediate shutter speeds after switching off/on
– Face recognition
Firmware (Playback Mode):
– Delete button working when zoomed in
– Deletion of images working continuously with only one button click like in X20
– Zoomed in image in Playback mode taking up the whole screen
A minimum shutter speed in aperture priority, of course…
Like X-E2:
Lens Modulation Optimizer (LMO)
LMO is sensor/processor-based, no chance to get it with a firmware-update…
Im happy for the most part A working historygram in M is still 1 on my list. Having to take a 5 minute exposer as a test shot kills a lot time!
Focus peaking on the X10. I know, I know… different, less sexy camera, perhaps a little embarrassing to Fuji because of its older sensor & recall issues. Nevertheless, that’s what I’d like to see.
Would it be easier to implement a software update on the X100S?
+1 on these!
– Minimum shutter speed with auto ISO mode. Come on, they all got it!
– Information on exposure compensation hidden when set to zero
And:
AE/AF-lock after shot, if you keep the shutter button half pressed for the next shot – like on ALL other cameras 😉 No need to refocus all the time.
“Strong sales at AmazonUS for the X-E2” Update: #2, #6, #9, and #40.
I don’t quite see the purpose of these recurring “strong sales” statements. While that sort of information may be of interest to investors, I wonder why a photography enthusiast (presumably the target audience for this site) should care one way or the other.
Sure, I probably wouldn’t buy a camera from a brand that’s on the brink of bankruptcy, but I personally don’t monitor sales volumes.
I guess we won’t see a FF-Fuji if the X-E2 or the X-series in general is a flop. Overall, the imaging division of Fujifilm is loosing money, so it’s good if the X-E2 sales are good… that could speed up the development of other cameras and lenses. And also interesting to see that, at the moment, the X-E2 can catch up with the Sony A7R. So it seems that the FF-Sony did not influence negatively the sales of the X-E2 (at the moment the X-E2 is also selling better). Three weeks after it’s launch, it is still there, in the top positions.
Old One: You have to ask? Consumer psychology + curious minds want to know things. Consumer (stakeholder) demand drives innovation as well as support for existing products. This dynamic can be clearly seen with most companies that provide goods or services. If the non-“investor” consumer drop $5,000 on camera equipment, he/she would like to believe (which some level of certainty) the company will be around for awhile.
Fair comments, but I’m not convinced that Amazon rankings are a reliable indicator of a company’s financial fortitude. Corporate economy isn’t that easy to gauge.
I’ll concede that it may be an indicator for peer performance across a designated market segment, but a simple “strong sales” statement based on a volatile snapshot of one (albeit major) reseller’s sales figures does little to support my faith in the viability of an entire enterprise.
It’s for sure not a perfect indicator, but it’s the best I found until now.
I care about the sales because I care about the resale value of my investments. Yeah, bodies are a dime-a-dozen, so to speak, and my X-Pro1 won’t be worth a lot once the X-Pro2 comes out, but I’d like to be able to sell my 35mm 1.4 for a decent chunk of what I paid to get it, so that I can partially finance the 23mm 1.4 / 10-24 / 56 1.2 that I’m lusting after :). In order to get a good price on my lenses there has to be a market for used X-mount lenses… which means that there have to be a reasonable number of people buying the X-mount cameras.
Of course I’d like to see colored focus peaking, minimum shutter speed with auto ISO, and face detection. But as much as those, I’d like to see exposure compensation working with auto ISO in manual mode. As it stands, in manual mode with auto ISO on, there’s no way to get anything other than the auto exposure at “0” exposure compensation. Changing any setting to adjust exposure just results in an equal change in ISO to negate it. A perfect use of the exposure compensation dial.
– Face detection
– Minimum shutter speed
– Selectable focus peaking colour
Nothing new, but in case Fuji reads this I would like to add my little extra weight to the request.
This would take me from a happy snapper to a /very/ happy snapper.
Face detection would be a real boon. Actually, faster AF and your suggestions are pretty well all that is needed for the XP1. Good call, DickieBoy!
+1 On face Detection (I don’t expect this though) — I’m tired of all out-of-focus pictures when I hand my camera to a stranger for a picture 🙂
It is worth mentioning as Fuji really does listen. Your problem is mine too.Once that is ironed out, the X series is the best camera going in the non full frame profile.
Would it be possible to get real exposure preview on the X-E1? That is what I have been missing most since I left Panasonic in favour of Fujiflm.
Hopefully this is true…If so, the following are my requests, in order of importance:
– minimum shutter speed settings in auto ISO
– colour selection for focus peaking
– exposure compensation in manual mode
– face detection
– improvement to AF, if possible
While we definitely will not get them all, the top two, especially minimum shutter speed settings in auto ISO (can’t believe it was excluded and that it hasn’t been updated yet), are necessary to keep existing customers happy. When, or if, I buy a future X-Series camera (waiting for X-Pro 2), I will still use my X-Pro 1. So please provide us with these updates, even if it is last update we will receive.
My biggest gripe with the X-E1 is the selection of the AF field in contrast to the X100s and X-E2:
First, the AF select button is on the left so I would like to use one of the cursor buttons instead. If that is not possible then at least a fix for annoyance two: Selecting and resetting the AF field on the XE-1 is the complete opposite of the the X100s. The selected AF field is confirmed with the OK button on the X100s while a reset to the middle is done by pressing the back button. On the X-E1 the button ok resets the AF field dead center and hitting back or AF confirms the selection. Why? Oh my god, whyyyyyyyyy? This is so massivily annoying and one of the few real usability issues I have with the camera. I know this is now fixed on the X-E2 according to Fujifilm: “When selecting the AF area, the “BACK” button resets to the default center position, and “OK” confirms the selection.” So I’m really hoping for that to hit the X-E1 🙂
Other things I would like to see:
– Colored focus peaking
– Full manual video control (for every X camera actually)
If you update the X-E1/X-Pro1 to the latest FW you will find that you have an additional function button on the cursor down button. To this button you can assign the AF area selection init (assigned as default if I remember correctly). This solves at least part of the problem.
@Robert: Brilliant, thanks for the tip with the Function Button 🙂
Hope this is true, I wish they can add
– Delete button working when zoomed in
– In camera RAW processing should remember the last changed parameter instead of going to the top of the menu everytime
– Minimum shutter speed for auto ISO (manual)
The following are my main points to make the shooting a real pleasure:
Remove exposure compensation display – I much prefer to see what I’m taking a picture of, the current display obscures
Make the MF scale less obtrusive (same reason as above)
“Always on” AF point selection without pushing another button when composing, I want to just press on of the four arrow buttons to change AF point and not think what I have to press first to activate the feature (though its miles better with the last firmware upgrade!) I keep getting the Macro by mistake!!!
less important:
Delete button working when zoomed in – when zooming in to review an image and its not a keeper, one just wants to delete, not have to zoom out and then delete.
I’ve never used face-recognition on a camera but it sounds neat if it will focus on the eyes!
A strong colour for focus peaking

Why do you need it? For better object movement handling to avoid blur?
Set autoiso, dial time you want, like 1/60 for 18mm, set the aperture and you are fine.
Why so many complains?
Setting Auto Iso, dialing time and set the aperture does not allow to use the exposure compensation… when this would be possible your proposal is acceptable.
Nice idea! I am on safari in south africa at the moment. The only problem with your suggestion here is light conditions are changing fast and the animals do not wait till you set anything. The bush opens up and there is the rino. The 55 to 200 is the lens of choice and a minimum speed other than 1/30 would be ‘helpful’. At the moment situation is a pain in the neck. Otherwise the X-e1 is a phantstic camera.
Minimum Shutter speed with Auto ISO!
Minimum shutter speed in Auto ISO.
Everything else, I couldn’t care less about.
Minimum shutter speed in Auto ISO.

– More logical menus. Like, why the heck should I press “Disp” to save a custom setting?
– And why can’t I delete the image in review mode while zoomed in?
– A software configurable focus limiter for 60mm macro (and maybe telezooms too). For example, 5 meters to infinity, 10 meters to infinity (should be incredibly fast!), or even 2 meters to 10 meters. Something like that. Can be a Fn button preset.
– Why the 1/3 exposure adjustments I’ve made in manual mode (with arrow buttons) reset after each playback?!
– Speaking of playback… Ability to delete an image while zoomed in will be much appreciated.
– A menu/Fn shortcut to the top X-sync speed. Which is not marked on a dial, which means I have to set it using the arrow keys, which setting resets after every playback…
– Face recognition, of course.
– Action mode for the EVF. Maybe interlaced, or otherwise reduced resolution, but FAST!
– Control for the size of AF area in MF mode.
– Tracking AF (pattern/face/color etc).
– EVF layout. Why can’t I move a distance scale to the bottom row, where it won’t obscure my view of the scene? Why can’t I move a compensation scale down there? You have a hi-res screen – please use it to its full potential.
– Zebras and other real time warnings in EVF. Highlight/shadow clipping, for example. I can enable a clipping zebra on a consumer level Canon P&S, but not on Fuji’s top of the line system camera. I’ll happily trade a live histogram for zebra!
– If there’s even remote possibility to enable charging from the USB port by firmware update… 😎
Good suggestions.
What is to be desired for the X-Pro1, is not possible in this hardware.
Evidently, the AF can still use a lot of improvement. We achieved a much more acceptable response compared to its release back in 2012, but I’m still losing too many critical shots and I’m afraid Fuji has reached the very limits of this camera, possibly even this first generation of lenses.
Same with dynamics – and also related to it, I find this sensor quite sensitive for highlights but of course.
Also the flash sync, I’d like to see that Fujifilm makes at least 1/250 truly possible in the X-Pro1, this would be a major relief. But again, this will require another shutter. I pray you in the X-Pro1 to make the sync 1/500 and redesign it to become a 1/8000 shutter (wow-wow-wow).
I don’t need face-recognition, common guys, we’re photographers, this is pure amateur stuff.
But indeed, the colored focus peaking would help. The minimum shutter speed with auto ISO, I agree.
I’m still fighting a lot with the camera sometimes not wanting to ‘see’ the flash, not exactly know what is going wrong. My X100 had a bit the same problem. The whole interaction with the EF-20 and EF-42 is just clumsy. Better flexibility and ergonomics in your menu system can’t be that difficult. (Dear Fuji, please look into a credible flash solution, these relabeled amateur Sunpacks are not in accordance with the X-range vocation. If you can’t, use a Nikon or Canon protocol instead, a lot of people will be very, very happy…)
Last but not least, Fuji, please revisit anything you have ever done with the XF60mmF2.4’s firmware. Optically, this lens is a dream, but the AF is completely a joke, even in good light. Hunting, hunting, hunting, snap. Sounds a bit like an old electric screwdriver during this behavior. This is unacceptable!
Yes, but what happens when you hand the camera over to your wife, or a stranger to take a photograph of you? 😀
The D800/E and the D4 all have face detection in OVF mode which is excellent also for pros who want to nail focus on the eyes. I can tell you from my own experience that it works very well. Of course I would like to see that on the X100S now that it is finally there on the X-E2.
Yes, Robert. I’d rather have this “amateur” feature than heartache.
In a pinch, face detection is a god send. Pure amateur stuff? When I am shooting with a digital camera and I look at my old 8X10, I am careful about saying pure amateur stuff.
Gotta love Fuji for actually giving us meaningful new features in firmware updates.
I generally agree with most all of the feature requests above. Here’s what I feel the are the most important:
1. Manual Exposure for Video.
2. Face detection focusing. Also face tracking during video.
3. Option to automatically switch to manual focus and zoom in when you turn the focus ring. (Something like Sony’s DMF) It should automatically zoom back out after not moving the lens for a configurable amount of time.
4. Option to swap the ISO and AF select buttons like the X-E2 (I bet that we will get this one).
In other words just give us all the Sony features, but keep the Fuji ergonomics and menu system.
Pure amateur reporting for duty and requesting face detection, please.
Could you send Fuji the email about suggestions, or at least tell to what email should we right?
Please add very important features to Fujifilm X-E1 via firmware:
* Turn on the exposure correction dial in all the modes when Auto-ISO is on. (When both aperture and shutter speed are set, Auto-ISO makes the exposure automatic anyway, but you cannot correct it at all. This is not right.)
* Please make sure when focus peaking in the manual focus mode is turned off, that it’s turned off completely — I see some blurring and artifacts sometimes, that weren’t here in winter/spring firmwares.
* Don’t reset the shutter speed to the value selected on dial after image view. Let it stay on that very value I chose with both dial and arrows.
– Please, add batch RAW image processing via built-in RAW-post-convertor. (Or saving of several processing presets to quickly apply to other images.) Also, in the preview there is no way to zoom in before you apply the RAW processing.
– A function for Fn to toggle block focus in manual focus mode.
– Fine tune battery indicator. Now it shows the full charge all the time, then 2 levels and immediately red sign and zero.
– Please make exposure correction scale much more transparent. Also, it could be good to have the same transparency level on the distance scale.
– Bug: the distance scale that was hidden can reappear (rare) in the viewfinder after zoom-in+zoom-out.
* Please make the dot exposure metering mode follow the focus point (not only in center), as it’s done in almost all cameras.
– Make the focus point in the tracking AF selectable.
I’ve marked the most important items with *. Thank you in advance!
And thank you very much for the beautiful camera giving great colour and soulful images!
There are so many great suggestions in this thread already, so I’ll just add one more.
-Expanded exposure bracketing. The X series does HDR incredibly well but it is such a bother right now, since you’ll have to use the exposure compensation dial to get enough range. Why not extend the bracketing function to +-3 EV over 5 frames
In this order, I would like the X-E1 firmware upgrade to:
1) Increase exposure bracketing beyond 3 exposures, or beyond 1 stop increments, or better yet both.
2) Allow Exposure compensation while in manual mode.
3) Increase playback zoom as much as possible, to 100%, or beyond.
4) Focus peaking in yellow and red as options.
That is all.
Oh, and include these FW upgrades in the X-E2 as well.
Hi,
beside the typical needs (Auto-Iso at first…) I would appreciate if the Q-Menue will always appear on the rear-screen, except I am looking through the finder.
It is so ridiculous when I press the Q-button and then have to change from EVF to Screen or have to look through the view-finder.
For easier handling it would also be nice to be able to delete a picture while it is zoomed in, that’s how my Canon is behaving a and it is the right way.
Daniel
Things that need to change:
– You need to press the “AF” button to choose a new AF point.
– Face detection
(It’s the lack of good autofocus control that has made me into a manual focuser)
I think I am alone with this one, but I am a manual (exposure) shooter and this is my wish:
– I wish the exposure compensation dial doubled as an ISO dial.
(I would pay money for it to be replaced with a (stiffer if possible) L-200—–6400-H1-H1 dial)
Interface bug:
– When reviewing and zooming into a portrait oriented photo, it blocks out the left and right sides with big black bars. Please fix this.
Focus peaking colors, minimum shutter speed for auto iso, af speed improvements, exposure compensation in movie mode and live exposure updates in manual mode.
1) Face detection – for toddler shots and handing camera off to strangers
2) More colors for focus peaking – yellow and red would be best
3) Minimum shutter speed in auto-ISO
Anything else would be a bonus.
EVF/LCD EXPOSURE PREVIEW IN MANUAL MODE PLEASE!! The auto preview is unusable.
it is present in ex2 why not in ex1.
+1 Exposure preview in manual mode! I don’t understand people don’t complain much more about that thing missing, isn’t it one of the basis of photography?
I’d like to think they could improve the accuracy of the OVF of the X-pro (parallax) and maybe implement the focus peaking in the OVF so we could use it in manual mode… I know I know, I’m dreaming…
Try to shoot your subject against the sun or any light source and you will understand what i meant. I dont’t want just +1 exp in manual mode but i want to see real time exposure preview before i push the shutter.
Sorry, when I read what I wrote, I understand the confusion. I meant “I agree with what you said (+1)” 😉
Ok sorry too.
Exactly!
For X-E1:
– Auto-ISO with minimum shutter speed adjustable!
– Face Detection!
Come on, it shouldn’t be a big deal and as someone else noticed already it is quite common on other brands!
That’s all;)
I want to see split ring for manual focusing!
+1 for the split image although i like focus peaking too.
As tapehiss and I reported in the forum of the last update here:
http://www.fujirumors.com/get-it-now-the-new-firmware-is-here-download-test-and-share-your-findings-on-fujirumors/ ,
there was a bug in the last update which created hotpixels during the last firmware-update.
Seems like the X-E1 forgot the mapping of the hotpixels, they showed up immediately after updating in the EVF, the display and even in pictures.
No fancy stuff like extreme long time exposures or high ISO but in standard scenes like at 1/30s at ISO200 or 1/160s at ISO800 or even 1/450s at ISO400 to name some examples!
I’d like Fuji to fix the bug and map those hotpixels again automatically.
For me:
– Usable rear button/dial for approach manual focus when the camera still record the previous photo, that way you can prepare the next shot before the camera finish work.
– Better video, moving objects that appear from right to left (and inverse) look diagonal, all twisted, can´t see very well at all.
– Colour options for focus peaking
– timelapse
– Live view in manual mode, exposure preview.
– In the custom menu can save most options, like size, raw+jpg, jpg, etc. If i can choose thats better.
– If a can configure the date of the trips with correct hours previously, thats can be ok, sometimes i forget change it.
– Save the name of the author in jpg exif data can be a plus.
Below are listed in order of priorirty the three improvement I would like to see implemented in the X-E1 and X-Pro1.
– colour selection for focus peaking
– auto-ISO exposure compensation in manual mode
– minimum shutter speed settings in auto ISO (in shutter/aperture automated modes)
I’ve got a lot but not least firmware update point, please Fuji, enable the infrared AF support for the Sunpak flashes, f.i. the EF42. It would improve the use of this flash very significantly. This cannot be a difficult topic to change in your firmware?
1. Minimum shutter speed in auto iso
2. Less intrusive scales in the viewfinder
3. Face detection
4. The fancy so called ‘creative programs’
One and two have both first priority. Both can be changed easily I think. For 4.
I am just a lousy amateur, but I paid the same price as all you proffessionals…..
Please add high speed flash sync (Canon calls it “High Speed Sync”, Nikon “Auto FP”). This is a glaring omission by Fuji. This is where the flash fires several times during the exposure so you can use flash above the shutter sync speeds. Especially useful if with Fuji’s fast lenses. May not be possible with just a firmware update, but we can hope.
X PRO1
– Customizable “image disp” – I would like to see f.e. highlits and shadow clipping right after taking photo.
– Transparent DOF bar
– Minimum shutter speed at AUTO ISO
– Exposure preview in manual mode
– When changing display mode dont show list of modes, just change mode – one click = next mode
– Transparent Q menu to see effects of changes
‘When changing display mode dont show list of modes, just change mode – one click = next mode’
Hi Marcin
Very good! When you start thing about this – it just seems pointless going into a menu given the small number of options! I’ll add it to my list!
the kind of category makes this pointless – display. why choosing points of menu instead of changing display mode immediately.
+1 Minimum shutter speed with auto ISO mode.
