Weather sealed X with better AF than X-E2?

[shoplink 20357 ebay] photo fujci_zpsed61407a.jpg[/shoplink]

the weather sealed X could have a [shoplink 20357 ebay]FujicaST[/shoplink]-like design

Hi

I’ve been told by new (and still unconfirmed) sources that the weather sealed X will have faster AF than the X-E2 (which features a hybrid AF system, phase detection + contrast AF).

At the same time an anonymous source simply wrote in the rumor box: “don’t dismiss the digital ST as rumor, it’s coming soon & brings a few new facets with it!”

If true, the question now is: what makes the AF on the weather sealed X even better than the hybrid AF system on the X-E2? It’s your time to make your guess.

But for now, please take it with a grain of salt.

When will it be announced?

After the leak of digicame info, I think that Fuji’s main course of the meal at the CES in Las Vegas will be the XF 56 f/1.2 lens (and maybe the black X100S?)… and the weather sealed X could be announced a bit later, maybe at the CP+ (February) or at a special event later in January.

Here are the specs of the weather sealed X until now (from trusted, new and also anonymous sources):

  • bigger and better EVF
  • APS-C X-Trans sensor (16MP)
  • double SD-card slot
  • weather sealed body
  • launch in January
  • price range between X-E and X-PRO line
  • FujicaST-like design
  • faster AF than the X-E2

Stay tuned, and if there is anyone out there who knows something that could make my job here easier, feel free to share with me. Use the rumor box to contact me so your identity will remain secret… just give yourself a fake name so that I can recognize you in future.

cheers

  1. I am very much attracted by the Fuji x-range..specifically this new body style with built in grip.
Maybe I will ditch my Oly EM5 and Nikon D600 for it, as it seems like the best of both worlds

  2. May well be like the Sony 77 with a half mirror of some kind for the AF. But with the short Mount I would not know how? This will be fun to watch now! I would how deep the daggers will be LOL

      1. Why the heck would it have a mirror!? Please, get that coffee! The times that mirrors were needed for phase detect are long gone, that’s modern retro by now. 😉

          1. True, but that is probably shorter than a mirror flipping up and down, and it’s definitely better than losing light (always, for each and every photo you ever take) with a translucent mirror.

          2. Not to mention all the million reasons we’re here because we chose mirrorless in the first place. 😉

          3. You do realize our XF lenses, M-mount, and a millions other classics cannot be used with a mirror in way don’t you?

          4. I don’t see Fuji putting a prism bump just for looks! What can it be or what do you think is the ? of the day.

          5. I could see Fuji adding a bump just because everyone else is doing it … and what else can they do? Same sensor …

    1. Dfenitely, aside from the fact that it isn’t going to be FF. But unlike the Df i’d guess it would have a shutter speed dial with aperture on the lens, and actually the size of a classic SLR like it should. Otherwise, what is the point!

      1. Yep….If you bothered to wade through the 1000+ posts in the Nikon forums regarding the DF’s features, I bet a third of those were people lamenting the fact that the body was much too thick to be properly reminiscent of a 70’s film era Nikon.
I guess it’s one of the drawbacks of having a full frame body in the digital age.
If Fuji can capitalize with X styling features on a slim SLR style weatherproofed body, they could really do quite well in my opinion.

  3. It’s looking better every day. I was almost ready to jump ship and head across to the Oly EM1 camp, but that thing is waaaay overpriced for the crappy, noisy pictures it makes, even at base ISO. I curse my X100s every time I take it out in the streets because of its equally crappy AF speed and accuracy. If Fuji can get the same AF performance out of the new weather-sealed X as Oly get from the EM1, it’ll kill the Oly dead. And it mustn’t just be an incremental movement over the XE2- like the X100s was over the X100- it’s gotta be Oly faster. The 16 mp XTrans IQ is better than any mid-range dSLR, especially in noise performance at ALL ISOs- if only they can get the AF right…Here’s fingers crossed.

  4. Interesting, but

    – What about the hybrid viewfinder? Will Fuji go without hybrid viewfinder in the future? Will the Fujica replace the XPro-line? It does not make much sense to place the Fujica between the XE- and XPro-line.
    – If this camera has an EVF only, why do we need a XE-2 camera? From a business point of view the Fujica will compete the XE-line, what does not make sense. Who would buy the Fujica who would not buy the XE-cams?
    – If the Fujica comes with a fixed lens, it would equally compete the X100s
    – A rugged weather sealed body would be nice; will we also get weather sealed lenses? Why not just weather seal the XE-line? Will the Fujica lenses be smaller than the existing ones, so that we will have another advantage over the XE- and XPro-line?

I guess we need more information about this Fujica to understand what this project is about.

    1. I agree, Dave- and it should be the complete box’n’dice. I’m getting well sick of the cynical manipulation of consumers by camera companies adding just a little extra to old models and not implementing all of the established design improvements in one hit- Just so we buy 3 cameras within two years to get the one we really wanted.

It’s gotta have interchangeable lenses with the XTrans II (or III) at least 16mp,quick AF and meaningful continuous shooting modes, hybrid VF, and bullet-proof (truly) pro body, or why bother at all? And if they do get it right (with a good range of weather-proof lenses, like Oly, there’ll be a lot of photojournalists with skew-if spines champing at the bit to get at it. And it should be priced at about the same as the Oly, to begin with. Probably higher than the out-of-date XPro1 No reason it can’t be doable. All the elements exist- nothing new to invent, really.

    2. Some like the Rangefinder-Style, some like the SLR-Style. With a Fujica-Like X Fuji will have a product for both costumer-groups. I think, there is the XE-Series with EVF Rangefinder-Style, a XPro-Series with Hybrid Finder Rangefinder-Style and a XA-Series without Viewfinder and a XM-Series for costumers with less money. On The level ofthe XE will be the Fujia-like camera with EVF. I don’t think we will see a XPro-Level SLR-Finder-Styled camera, because, there is no room for a mirror to create a hybrid finder.

For me, I don’t see a reason for a XA AND a XM, they are much the same.

To simplify I created a model:

      XA
      |
      XM
      |
      XE – Fujica
      |
      XPro

  5. Interesting news! However Fuji has one big problem ahead: no weather sealed lenses 🙁

It’s too bad that the XF 10-24 f4 OIS has no weather sealing because it could have been the first zoom that feature.

Fuji needs to build zooms with constant aperture and weather sealing (like Olympus with their PRO line) because out in the wild/rain/cold pro zooms are used more that fixed primes.

  6. Fuji needs PDAF on more than just the centre focus point. Many people never even use the centre focus point. 9-11 well spaced PDAF points would be perfect, also with a fast way of selecting them.

  7. I think that they should release the X-Pro 1 replacement before this camera. If people invest in this mid/high end camera, they’re not going was to splash more cash on the flagship camera when it’s finally released.

    1. Why can’t this be the new flagship? It’ll be slightly lower price than the X-Pro1, but with pro features…

The way I see it, they need more people buying their cameras, especially enticing them from the pro Dslr market.

  8. This will need to be a very good camera to bite into any of the D7100 or EM5 market and it will need to be priced perfectly.

I hope this is the X camera I’ve been waiting for.

  9. Sounds promising! No hybrid finder is no problem for me, as I prefer the EVF. I don’t think the hybrid finder was a profitable course for Fuji anyways.

  10. A touch flip screen and I’m sold! I’m really hoping Fuji with start thinking of upping the mp’s to the low 20’s, though.

  11. hmm, the LCD with EVF as in E1/2/Pro does restrict how small the body can be made, using a viewfinder hump is one way make the camera smaller overall even if the absolute dimensions are the same. Improved AF speed … I was under the impression that the E2 was “fast as light” …

Guess we don’t see another XPro! The OVF as implemented makes no real sense with the lens lineup.

If its small with an EVF could be interesting to replace my XPro1 … but Sony can do that already and Sony is FF … and probably cheaper.

  12. I wonder this is like a Sony RX10 camera. If Fuji had a vision on this camera then I would expect all 2013 lens are weather proof already.

  13. Lets hope the autofocus is better than the X-E2…though it is better than the X-E1 it is still pretty slow and sometime non existant in low light

    1. It could very well be the case. We won’t know for sure until CES in Vegas, or the CP+ show in Japan. I’m still guessing the X Pro 2 with its rangefinder shape will materialize around the time for Photokina. Perhaps the organic sensor tech will find its way into it, as well as the latest incarnation of the hybrid viewfinder…who knows?

    2. That’s where a bit of knowledge about manual lens control comes in ……..a understanding of hyperfocal distance is smack easy

  14. I’m hoping the rumored Fujica ST styled camera is not a bridge camera.
I would like to see Fuji keep this as interchangeable, and offer either a constant aperture zoom or a new prime…both with weather sealing to match the new body.
A separate ISO dial would be neat!

  15. I don’t need faster AF, but if the IQ is better than X-E1, I might be swayed. Otherwise, I would rather wait for the organic sensor in 2015.

  16. Everyone seems to be complaining that Fuji has missed the mark by not delivering a full frame camera and it makes me very upset. I think Fuji knows exactly what they are doing… And they know their target audience. This is going to be an excellent camera for 25-39yo males who think they are more sophisticated than the DSLR Soccer-Moms. I’m sure it will be an excellent shooting experience with that cool retro look and superb quality. And every shot you take you’ll wonder how much better it would look if the sensor was a big boy FF, and how much harder you would have had to work to step up to one.
