      1. correct — R stands for ‘ring’ in referring to the aperture ring. it’s even mentioned in an article about the xf 14mm in the current PopPhoto magazine (the one with the Sony A7R getting camera of the year on the cover).

  1. R stands for the aperture Ring.

I think i’ll have to sell one of my XF-lenses for this one!!!!
I can expect it to be expensive.

    1. “R” stands for the additional effort that Fuji puts into its highest quality lenses to make the aperture blades perfect. The individual blades are very finely crafted and very sharp on their edges in an effort to prevent diffraction from light bouncing off of the edges of the blades at smaller apertures.

  2. I’m expecting this lens to outperform the Canon 50mm f/1.2 L which is known to be soft and inconsistent wide open. If this is the case I can see some serious photographers switching over to Fuji. Shame an X-Pro2 with PDAF is not out to pair it.

    1. The Canon’s comparison term shall be more the 85mm than the 50mm, no matter the IQ performances of each lens as on the X series cameras this will be a portrait lens with an equivalent (more or less) focal distance.

        1. Yes, and if you want good primes, you buy the 35mm lenses anyhow, so you are getting weight and cost you don’t need, plus dodgy equivalent focal lengths. The good news is if you decide to get a 35mm camera, your lenses will work, though your focal lengths might not be right for what you shoot.

        1. 85mm f/1.7 is the final answer.

And I’m happy to see nobody is tired of equivalence discussions; it’s fun to continue beating a dead horse!

Anyone who’s used a 50mm f/1.2 on APS-C knows how razor thin the DoF is at close portrait distances. If they want it even thinner, then they can buy a FF camera and an 85mm lens. It’s not like their photos will be any better, but it’s their decision.

  3. Arent Fuji meant to be publishing an updated roadmap?
    Any ideas whats on it.
Obviously some are talking about weather sealed versions perhaps of existing lenses but i wonder are we going to see more cheaper ones? more telephotos? newer faster designs? would they add IS to primes? they havent so far but my favorite lens so far that i own is the 1.4 35mm with 3-4 stops of IS that would be amazing.
id like the 56 1.2 but i doubt i can afford it this year. the 60 doesnt have a great rep and is only 2.4 which doesnt really give me a reason to buy it over the zoom lens.
i guess commercially they need to think – what will sell? what will make the range look better so that we sell more overall? what will help future products? perhaps we might see lenses that could cover full frame as well – in anticipation of a FF model in the future?

    1. I’d bet for a fast tele prime somewhere between 85 and 120mm and 1.8 or 2.0, perhaps a constant aperture standard zoom to go along with an X-Pro2 as kit.

    2. Aside from focus speed, the 60/2.4 is brilliant. Very sharp at all apertures, great bokeh, exceptional build. I may exchange mine for the 56, but I may not, just to have a smaller option in that range. Losing macro isn’t that big a deal, since I use my OM-D and Oly 60 macro for that.

      1. 56/1.2 will be capable of significant background defocus on full body portraits. 60/2.4 is not capable of this.

It’s equivalent to 85mm f/1.8 basically. Having shot many times with 85/1.8 on full frame, I can say, I am quite eager to get this capability back. Just to give you a quick sense of what I mean, see this image which is significantly wider framing than just a typical portrait oriented full body composition and still has quite a defocused background. Oh and it’s cropped some (6mp chopped off 36mp): http://www.flickr.com/photos/zacheryjensen/7601855800/

This is just one example of why one would go with the 56/1.2 over 60/2.4 (besides almost guaranteed faster focus).

I do think the 60/2.4 is a good lens and works decently in the interim, but, the 56/1.2 brings a whole new level of capability natively to APS-C photography.

        1. Loved the colors in your photo, and the nice bokeh. Too bad you couldn’t blur the guy in the blue shirt’s fat belly beyond recognition, though. 😉

          1. I know, right? There is only so much you can control with street photography though 🙂 I did add a sort of vignette effect (gradient filter in LR) to try toning down the exposure and colors there to make him a little less visually grabby but, C’est la vie.

        1. I will be selling my 60mm once the 56mm is available ~ assuming the 56mm will be sharp center to corner, even wide open.

          1. That’s a pretty poorly informed assumption. No other f/1.2 lens has this property in the history of camera lenses. There is no evidence to suggest this will change now.

However at f/2.4 it will probably be rather fine and you aren’t getting any more than that out of the 60mm.

        1. and the weird thing is has the price already started dropping – one site has one on at £379.99 and another on at £285. both listed as second hand and 5star. cant see why any difference other than cheaper one appears newer listing.

  4. Honestly my concern is the size of 56/1.2. It is relatively big, and in the same size of DSLR’s lens. 56/1.2 is really huge, probably slightly bigger than my Nikon 85/1.8g which is FF.

    1. Can’t you see the picture above, and also know that its filter thread is 62mm which is the same as the XF 23mm f/1.4? This should help you draw the conclusion that it will be almost exactly the same diameter as the 23mm and possibly slightly longer based on the picture.

It’s easier to make a telephoto lens smaller than it is to make a wide angle lens smaller and still work well on short flange distance cameras. The 56/1.2 design is probably something like a 75mm f/2 with a focal reducer built in. Using telephoto lens design and focal reducer design, one can keep the lens fairly compact for what it is.

      1. People switch from DSLR to mirrorless mainly because of the reduction of size and weight. If Fuji is not able to design smaller and lighter glass. Thus, terms of size and weight, there is no advantage of XF lens over DSLR lens at all. I may keep shooting my X-E1 with 18-55 and keep using my canon fast prime with canon DSLR.

        1. Another reason for switching is the noise of DSLRs.

Also, if you find that the 56 is too heavy then you have the 60mm as a choice. If the 56 isn’t for you, then you don’t have to buy it.

        2. You’re simply wrong. So wrong it’s not even funny. I can’t even begin to quantify how wrong you are. Oh wait yes I can.

Simply find any DSLR and lens and then the equivalent configuration on a mirrorless camera and compare the entire package. You’ll find it’s always smaller on mirrorless cameras. How about that? What an amazing fact‽

Seriously, this “mirrorless is all about being tiny! Rawr the lenses are giant!” is so damn tired.

Have you even considered that no other system, besides full frame and larger format, offer any lens/camera combination that even do what any Fuji X + 56/1.2 can do? None. Zero. Zilch.

Therefore there is no NEED for comparison. It’s unique amongst cameras. And I guarantee you it will be smaller than any full frame camera with the same capabilities, even the A7/A7R (since they don’t offer this capability natively yet either and 85/1.8 lenses, even manual, are large and require adapters).

You know what is amazing about the whole, smaller/lighter thing? When you want a small/light camera you can jam the 27/2.8 lens on there. When you want capabilities on par with a FF camera and STILL have the lighter option, you can jam the 56/1.2 on there.

There is absolutely no validity to your point, or anyone else’s point made on the same grounds and it’s time to let it die.

          1. I am looking forward to the 56mm. IIRC, it will be announced on 6JAN, and I am looking forward to getting a pre-production sample. I have seen it mounted on an X-E2 and X-Pro1, and I like the size. I could show you pictures, but I won’t. I also like that it’s conventional, no pseudo-focussing à la 14mm and 23mm.

          2. Rico, what do you mean it’s not “pseudo-focussing” like the 14mm and 23mm? I actually find those the only two Fuji lenses that manually focus as a lens should.

Or did you miss out a comma and you meant to say that it actually focuses like the 14mm and 23mm?

  5. For those whining about the coming so-called “high” price, I suggest you look forward to the 2015 release of the fashionable, apparatchik-designed Obama lens/camera, to go along with the Obama cellphone and government healthcare. 😉

  6. thanks fuji for making your best lens in the series obsolete. the excellent 60f2.4. how are you going to sell 60f2.4 after 55f1.2 ? how???

    1. Best lens in the series? Since when is the 60mm the best lens? I’ve heard people talk about the 35mm, the 14mm or the 23mm as the best, but never about the 60mm…

    1. Fujimoto,

Yes, my source is a conversation with one of the Fuji guys in October at the PhotoExpo plus show in NY. So my source comes direct from the horses mouth

    1. 55-150 mm f 2.8-2.8 would be a nice lens and, of course.
Even the 120 mm f/2.4 would be nice (and stabilized 🙂 ) f/2.8 would be nice too, if this means cheaper and lighter.

  7. What a shame there is know news of either an upgrade or new top of the range PRO body been waiting now for months to see this appear, it seems Fuji are pandering to the lower end of the market rather than keeping the Pro market happy The Pro 1 just had so many versions of firm wear that it was never thought out properly from the beginning given the price
That said there have been some fantastic images shot with it and the Fuji optics. So come on Fuji get your fingers out and release that body you’ve been hiding from us all

    1. The Pro1 was perhaps Pro in name only, I could not imagine a pro using this camera outside of having fallen in love with it – which is nice but love is a funny thing, makes people blind to reality.

There is a nice rumor of a new camera in a few days, from Fuji, that will have many Pro features. Unfortunately it will be APS-C, never-the-less will be nice to have something in the market as a “beacon” product because … the XPro1 was not a great one and the competition is a long long way ahead at the moment. Fuji is looking tired, lots of cameras based of the same platform, needs a refresh really bad.

      1. Why this obsession with full frame. Unless you are a bokeh geek, there is absolutely no necessity for full frame. The X pro images are far superior to what I got from my 5D. The camera is less than 2 years old. Saying it is out of date is just absurd. There is nothing a new camera could add to my photo needs. It is not suited for sports for sure but I used a Canon 40d for sports- High School nite football games with a 2.8 zoom, and that combo could be had for about $1,000 if needed to supplement a x system. And unless you shoot in the dark the focus is now VERY fast.

    2. Seems odd that Fuji seem to be aiming at the top of the market with some of their lenses, but seem to be neglecting their top-of-the-range body.

They’ve done a great job with the XE2, so even a modest update to the X-Pro 1 shouldn’t be a huge step for them, unless they’re working very hard on it and are going to really pull something special out of the bag.

It’s all speculation at this stage, but fun speculation!

  8. Assuming this weather sealed X rumor is real, my hope (regardless of likelihood) is that it will be announced with a wildlife photography oriented lens, 100-400 or something like that, which is also weather sealed.

  9. Fuji will probably update the lens roadmap with two new constant 2.8 weather sealed zooms to go with the weather sealed body.

    Otherwise it would be weird.

  10. Fuji should publish a new roadmap soonest. I expect 60mm macro replacement. It’s time to have true 1:1 macro lens for X system

    1. No, I’m obsessed by the X-series, so I never asked for other cameras, and no source told me about… will drop an email to source, maybe I can tell you more about the S1

      1. Thank you!
For a year and a hald, there has been no answer from the competition for Sony’s RX100… but now it seems like Olympus and Panasonic will unveil big sensor compacts. So I was wondering about Fuji, and this S1.

        1. Since the S1 is a FinePix Camera I don’t think it will be a big sensor compact as Fujifilm would reserve that for its X-Series (FinePix and Fujifilm X are two different lines).

If I had to make a guess I’d say its a weather sealed replacement for the HS50EXR and Fujifilm renames its lineup. So it might be that Fujifilm will either abandon the EXR CMOS or don’t mark it in its product names anymore.

  11. I really hope the Fuji will put a tradional aperature ring with marks on the coming weathersealed zoom! This is one of the fantastic caracteristic of the X-line!
