What a great sunny Sunday here in… the mountains 😉 . I’ll try to go out and enjoy it, right after today’s third article is online (Posted Earlier Today: First REAL LIFE X-T1 image leaked – Full list of X-T1 firmware ver. 4.0 features).
But before I leave, I couldn’t wait to share this with you:
A top trusted source just dropped me an email and said: “Get ready for a New Lens on May 18th!!!” Although the source didn’t specify which lens will be unveiled, I guess that a quick look at the roadmap will help you to find the answer.

The 100-400 is the only one we are missing information on. Unless they just plan to announce the release date of the 90mm or 35mm?
Guess the 90mm?!
90mm I’m ready 🙂
That, or the X-T10 has a 35mm F2 kit option.
More affordable lens for a affordable body, makes sense to me!
But more likely the 90/2 first, and the 35/2 later as per roadmap. 🙂
I’d put my money on the 90. It is a bit of a waste, to pair a WR lens with a non-WR body. WR is probably also one of the reasons why the 35/2 won’t be that affordable.
Perfect match for a WR X-Pro2 kit.
I know, that part does not make sense. It better be affordable or what would be the point in offering the lens at all, they had better spend their time updating the 35/1.4. So It’s not going to be half price, but if the 35/1.4 is $600 the 35/2 would probably be $450. In Fuji-land that is affordable. Less of course as a kit, and there would be deals at some point.
The point of the 35/2 to me is clearly to obscure as little as possible of the OVF in the X-Pro2. I am not sure if the price point is one of the top priorities.
I expect the next generation of the 35/1.4 to be larger due to an internal focus that will possibly increase the size. That will require a new design anyway. Maybe they increase the aperture size a little, while they are at it and completely remove optical distortion like with all the other recent premium primes. All of that will make the mk. II more expensive…
True. They probably already did, or are working on it at least you can bet on it. A Mark II ‘replacement’ for any lens won’t ever make it onto a public roadmap, so this could happen any day. And i would not be surprised if they were release at the same time, and both with WR. With all these AF improvements on the way, the 35mm can’t stay behind forever. It is the most important prime lens focal length for any system imho.
Who knows rumors about a possible F1.2 lens or faster might be true, seems 35mm is the most logical focal length the choose for that next, after the 56mm.
I guess you are right about it not showing up on the roadmap, but I would not expect it so soon. I guess they will first finish the current roadmap. Releasing two lenses with the same FL at the same time seems like a bad idea. Even with the 56 and the 56 APD they waited for a couple of months.
It might be a good match for the next gen X-T, as it will be less suitable for an OVF and probably also WR…
Indeed, probably a bit weird to offer two new 35’s at the same time.
But as the 35/1.4 basically ignited the X system along with the brand new X-Pro1 not even very long ago. And as i would pick Fuji as the nostalgic type that would release an updated version along with the X-Pro2 whenever that is. Emphasizing that slow AF is a thing of history. 😉 I would be surprised and sad if it would be any later than that.
I too am hoping for 35mm f2 kit with X-T10…believe that it wasn’t definitive that it would be WR…cheaper without is fine by me.
Fuji need to start doing some real super-tele’s for real photography such as sports and whildlife. Otherwise it’s just still a toy like a mobile phone. Why would you buy a Fuji with the current lens line up, when a mobile phone can do it all.
yeah a 7000$ 300mm f/2 as well as a 1200mm f/5.6 are missing.
The 100-400 and 120mm with teleconverter as wenn as 50-140 with tc and 55-200 are a really good start for a 3 year old system!
Your phone can give similar results to the 56mm 1.2? What phone do you have? I want one…
There are a lot of other applications aside from sports and wildlife. Fashion, portraiture, editorial, reportage, street, advertising, underwater, wedding, just to mention a few. Neither of these is anything a phone could do (not to mention the difference in image quality and the look you get from those lenses), but people are successfully doing with current and past Fuji X cameras.
Wildlife and sports are a fairly small and specialized market, and one that mirrorless is just becoming able to handle since until recently the AF was less than ideal for these kinds of things. Thus it made sense for Fuji to cater to all the other applications first. Besides, the stabilization on lenses like the 50–140 is amazing, and that lens already lets you cover a wide variety of wildlife and sports scenarios already, even more when the tele converter from the roadmap is released
Not to mention that I have successfully shot sports with a Firmware 2.0 Fuji X100 with the TCL in situations where traditional SLRs would not have been usable due to the loud shutter. While current mirrorless systems may not be the ideal sports and wildlife cameras, you will be able to easily make it work if your technique is good. Of course you’ll want to get a different system if you shoot sports/wildlife every day.
But why don’t you try to get closer for wildlife? Anyone with money can rent one of those ultra long lenses and get the same type of shots you do. It takes a lot more skill, experience, work and thinking to be able to get closer, and thus that is mostly where you will be getting your unique shots.
Anyway, by your definition, a Phase One or Hasselblad medium format camera is a toy camera since it’s not ideal for sports and wildlife and “a phone can do it all”. Hence using one probably makes me an idiot, which means there is little point arguing anyway.
Most importantly, does it inspire you to shoot, keep shooting, and continually get better. A phone might do fine in the snapshot department, and can be a fantastic tool in its own way, but for most people that appreciate ‘photography’ it just sucks all the fun out of it.
I’ve been taking photos for about 12 years both professionally and for myself and have never shot sports or wildlife. All this money wasted renting gear for architectural photography when I could have just used my phone… All this wasted equipment on flashes modifiers for portraits when I could have just used my phone. 🙁
“Real” photography???
Shit, thank you for opening my eyes, from now on I will use 600mm in the studio, otherwise I feel I’m just messing around with toys lol
16mm 1.4, 23mm 1.4 and 56 1.2 is what it´s all about… 🙂 Sports and wildlife photographers will probably look into other systems.
Obvious troll is obvious
“…for real photography such as sports and whildlife.”
Yeah, cause only sports and “whildlife” are real photography.
I guess you spelled wild as “whild” cause you are a “child”. LOL.
Enjoy fauxtography with your mobile phone. LMAO.
Small 35/2 prime which will join to 18/2 and widely opens a Fuji new f/2 small line of primes for X-Pro2 with HEV (and other too), so next year we will also see 23/2 and 55/2, and in 2017 also 16/2. And I am telling you right now: ALL Fuji users will be happy – these who want very fast f/1.2-1.4 primes and do not care about their big size, and these who want small but resonably fast classic primes. Comon Fuji, make as all happy!
A 23mm f2 or f2.8 is top of my wish list as the 27 lacks an aperture ring.
Of course all f/2 with aperture ring! I suppose in case of f/2.8 primes there will not be aperture rings, as the 27mm f/2.8 has not it… and f/2 seems best compromise beetwen size and low light work. So lets vote for f/2 !
I follow entirely on the f/2 (or at worst 2.8) but I would rather have no aperture ring and them pancake size and light lenses. I just fear that f/2 is not enough of a differentiation between the 2 series. If Fuji was going for a cheaper series of lenses My guess would be 2.8 (at least 2 stops difference) – which would be comparable to the “big boys” F/4 series
Depends what you are shooting but f/1.4 vs f/2 is enough of differentation between two series of primes – and you will see how they differ in size when Fuji 35/1.4 and 35/2 will be compared soon. Look at all cam & lens makers – all offer fast f/1.4 and f/1.8 primes in 24-85mm (FF format) range. In APS-C Sony offers many f/1.8 primes but users even asked for fast f/1.4 line but it seems Sony changed marketing and pushes them now to move for FF. Pancake f/2.8 lenses in 24-85mm range without aperture ring will not meet interest of X-Pro users (probably also X-T users). I am sure that is the reason Fuji already showed new 35mm WR with f/2 – they already made decision with new f/2 prime line. This is best compromise for second line of primes, and the next one will probably be 23/2 WR.
You have a point (well, several actually 🙂
If you’re right I’ll be on the line 🙂 : 1.8 lenses from other manufacturer who shall remained unamed (Starts and ends with a ‘N’ and there is a K on the middle :)) where good but not Fuji-good by a large margin.
I guess time will tell
Like you, I was wondering whether it’s going to bother me that the 27mm lacks an aperture ring. And after a year using it: no, not at all. If 40mm equivalent is the FOV you like, then go for it. The 27mm is absolutely stellar.
I wavered for a while on pancake w/o aperture lens. I have mine for almost year now, but to honest, I will replace 27 lens when new 35 f/2 comes out in fall. I do not like using read dial for aperture.
Don’t you think that the field of view is a more important factor than the aperture ring? 🙂
Can’t help but feel a bit disappointed that they didn’t go ahead with the 35mm f/1.4 II that was mentioned some time ago about it’s update. And does this roadmap show that Zeiss decided to back out from lens development for the Fuji and NEX line of cameras?
The lens road map above doesn’t show Zeiss at all. To be honest, it would be nice to have alternatives but Fuji don’t really need them, their lens selection is extremely good without them.
Zeiss Touit are great lenses but Zeiss losts interest in continuing it for APS-C – I got message from Zeiss that they are not planing new Touits and concentrate now only on FF lenses.
Doesn’t surprise me really. There was also the factor that they were competing with Fuji lenses that were already of high quality and as such, lower volume of sales were to be expected. That’s got to make it hard to recoup any R&D outlay never mind making a profit.
With Sony, there was quite a big difference in terms of IQ between the Zeiss and Sony lenses to make it a tempting proposition. Of course, Sony moving away from APSC for their high end system also speeded up the demise of the Zeiss APSC line!
I never quite got what Zeiss was trying to achieve with Fuji lenses so close (in terms of focal length) to their offering. They could have made in-roads by offereing something entirely different like 90mm or longer. They could not have ignored Fuji lens roadmap at the time.
I own the 12mm and 32mm Touit. And found the 12mm amazing in comparison to the 18mm that was offered at the time and the 32mm I got it because mainly of some of the negative reviews towards the 35mm being too soft wide open even at higher apertures.
But honestly was hoping they were going to make the 90mm f/2 for the Fuji/NEX lineup first. Then when I saw the Fuji offering in the roadmap I switched systems soon after to the FE line.
I would’ve loved to have seen a manual 90mm macro lens from Zeiss for the X mount. Just have to wait until 2016 for the 120mm from Fuji…. but I could be tempted by the 100-400 first though.
The 90mm macro would have been very nice I agree. So long the wait for the 120mm Macro though and most lenses were delayed also so you might be waiting even longer.
Most on here believe next 35 lens will be announced in fall with X-Pro2
I hope so, would be very nice.
I think Fuji will just release black versions of the XCII lenses! That’s all!
I think you are right!
I really hope so! Once I found out about the mk2 I held off on buying a second hand mk1. I would like to have a black version. I don’t mind waiting 6 months for a second hand. Just want the 16mm really for hiking.
I think the black version will come as you might saw on the X-T10 picture shared here on FR.

Wait is it going to be the 90 or the 35?
I think it will be the 90 mm shown on the roadmap, I suspect that the replacement for the 35 mm f 1.4 will either be f1.2, or even a headline grabbing f1.0, and will appear towards the end of the year.
Wait. Isn’t it already quite well established that it will be an f2 and focus more on the physical size rather than super aperture?
At least I hope so. Really hope Fuji start to focus on a few smaller lenses. The attraction of mirrorless for some people is a smaller kit. A few more pancakes (or just compact) would be nice.
The 35mm f/2 is all-but-confirmed, but there’s also been rumours of a f/1.0 lens (no word on focal length), so both could happen.
Ah thanks. OK I’m all for this. Might make the 35/1.4 cheaper on the second hand market for those of us on a budget 🙂
It seems Tankerman is new to Fujirumors 🙂
Perhaps, but with the rumoured new physically small 35 mm f2 being introduced, I think Fuji are now not constrained by the need to keep the replacement for the current 35 mm small also. A 35 mm with a filter size of 62 mm to match the 23 & 56 could easily be f1.2 and f1.0 could well be possible.
Given the latest post which says that a 90 mm f2 has appeared on an Austrian sellers site perhaps being a bit new to Fujirumours has its advantages.
Good catch! You’re mostly welcome to post anything you’ve heard from the Fuji crystal ball. 🙂
I’m waiting for 300/2.8. And 90/2. But it’s quite possible that we’ll see something that’s not on a roadmap (remember 56 APD?). Something with a massive WTF factor… like 60/2.4 Macro WR APD.
I am expecting a full review of XF 16/1.4
Chris, your icon rocks (fellow A-T lover)
Tried that already. AT are cool, but you should come to Japan (or maybe you are here) lots of crap crap crap. They need to protect their brand image. It’s no wonder a lot of people choose them last. They make pretty good mics but they spit out soooo many 10$ – 20$ earphones that break and aren’t made in Japan. Their good stuff is awesome, but it is few and far between.
Haha, I am glad that you like it.
If it’s day and date of the X-T10 announcement, I don’t see why it would be anything other than a lower-end lens for a T10 kit (or that level, anyway). 35mm f/2 or a new XC. It would be a bit bizarre to name the latest high-end lens on the same day you reveal your latest lower/mid-range body.
Ha ha! So, why Fuji can release so many lenses, but Sony has not figured out yet?
Sony proponents claim Sony is happy for you to bring lenses from other systems.
It’s actually a fair call. Photographers love their existing lenses.
Fuji has a good balance, if it fits your needs and world view 🙂
That’s BS.
Off course Sony wants to sell lenses there is much profit in lenses, much more then there is to earn in selling camera bodies.
Next to that those ‘existing’ lenses don’t work together with AF and if they use a converter that has AF, then the AF performance is very, very, very poor.
Still most photographers prefer autofocus over manual focus.
Only people that are willing to do full manual will now choose Sony.
Sony is just not able to put out new lenses or don’t care about their customers, or maybe both.
Not everyone depends of AF as much as you do.
Their lens line up is unattractive to a lot of people. Most Sony owners I know bring their own lenses as the attraction.
I always hear “why not just buy a Sony” as if they are perfect just because they control sensors and have FF. There is balance in points-of-view here.
I’ll guess this will be the official announcement of the 90mm f2.0
Then in september/October we can expect to see the 35mm that might well be the kit lens for the x-pro 2.
I hate & love the 16-55 2.8 an 90 2 lens so stellar but……they did the same mistake again with the new 90 as they did with the 16-55 WITHOUT OIS…..???? Why ??? Big, big bummer and major, significant mistake imo costs them thousands of potential buyers….they wont buy them just because of this missing, quite useful feature solely!!!
NO OIS NO BUY
Hopefully the new macro lens will have OIS….
Assuming that you have been a photographer for some time, and had either a Canon or Nikon system with no prime lenses that didn’t have some kind of vibration reduction system, then the lenses you used must have been very limited.
Apart from a very few recent Canon introductions of limited aperture clearly designed for video use, neither Canon or Nikon have any such lenses with a focal length under 200 mm.
The 90mm (for me) is a portrait (Headshot) and maybe Studio lens. Due to people not holding still, I take those pictures with 1/125 or 1/250 anyway, so no need for a stabilizer.
The 120mm Macro on the other hand is a specialized, long lens – this one really needs OIS and it better be on par with the 50-140!
