RUMOR: XF 35mmF2 WR will cost less than the current XF35mmF1.4 (SRP)

 photo dd_zpspdkhav97.jpg

Hi X-folks,

today I’d just quickly inform you that we now have a first hint about the price of the XF 35mmF2 WR. According to a source, who was right in the past, the Weather Resitant XF35mmF2 WR will cost less than the XF35mmF1.4. The source did not specify, though, if it’s for the lens alone, bundled with the X-PRO2 or in both cases. Anyway, it seems that price will be very interesting 🙂 .

If true, then that’s a good news … my credit card is ready… it will the perfect lens for my weather sealed X-PRO2. But please note that price & release are amongst the trickiest part of the rumors, since Fuji can change it anytime. You’ll be updated as soon as I get information from trusted sources.

When will it come? Well, I remind you how already back in May, Fujifilm was pretty clear about it: the Weather Resistant XF35mmF2 will be available in November.

stay tuned,

    1. I think there were clues XPRO-2 and body release of sony are not related. If they do so they would really impact other manufacturers as sony almost has a sensor monopoly, and they will be sued to death

      1. As I recall the Nikon D3X was released before the Sony A900 and the D800 before a Sony camera with the 36 megapixel sensor. If that is true, wouldn’t that dispel this 6 month wait. Does anyone else remember the release dates of the Nikons/Sony’s?

    2. And so is the X-PRO2 ????????????????
While waiting, Fuji’s software developers have now time building X-T1 FW 5.0 (optimising AF speed performance, tracking etc.)

      1. Come on… The incremental costs from a few seals and a different focus motor don’t match the difference between f/1.4 glass and f/2 glass.

As an exemple, the Pentax DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 went WR and HD (better coatings) without any price increase and it’s a budget lens with a tight price.

      2. WR is highly overrated in complexity, just a little something to stay competitive. And the AF motor HAS to be improved because the previous one is simply not up to standards. But that’s their problem, the cost of staying relevant, not something that increases the value of a lens beyond its worth. Finally catching up with the rest is not a feature. In the end F2 is HALF the light mind you.

    1. Also, I hope they don’t use the hood design from the 35mm f/1.4 lens. That design is a total PITA when it comes to rotating polarizing filters. Also, not being reversible is useless. Lastly, I’m not fond of the looks of it either. I definitely prefer the typical petal-type hoods.

  1. What a great shame it’s not a 23mm, that IMO is where the gap is. Still I suppose it would take sales away from the X100T.

      1. i think he meant 23mm in f2 form. i’d buy one of those. maybe even sell the x100s instead of selling the xf23mm 1.4 because i already had the x100s.

  2. A 50mm 1.8 in smaller form factor would be nice.
    Think a range of Leica/Voigtlander style lenses. 23, 35, 50, 75, 90.

I have the 18, 35, 56, but would probably swap the 56 for a much smaller, 1 stop slower lens. I mostly shoot it at 2.8 anyway.

  3. Man, I just can’t really get too excited for this lens. I think it’s a great option if you want a WR setup (XT-1, future X-Pro 2), but it doesn’t seem that much smaller than the f/1.4. I’m sure it’ll be quiet, focus faster and will be just as solidly built as their other lenses. Probably better IQ than my X100T.

If you don’t need 1.4 and like this focal length, I would recommend going for this new lens–but for me, I’m totally happy with the OG version and have no urge to get it.

Maybe this all comes down to how I feel about Fuji’s lens line-up. Below 90mm they are DONE for now IMHO. Just wait on adding new versions. Get a proper longer length macro lens and some bigger zooms out! 200-300mm+ primes. I personally shoot in the range of 12mm – 56mm (not interested in macro or big zooms) but those options would round out the line-up compared to other manufacturers.

    1. I agree, the 35 f1.4 is already pretty small. Imho they would have been better off just updating that lens with WR and a new focus motor and instead creating f2 lenses for 23 and 56 mm. Those are the large and expensive lenses that we need smaller/cheaper options for. So in my book the lineup below 90 is definitely not complete.

      1. It’s possible they’re doing both. Just highly unlikely that any update of a current lens would be put on the roadmap for us to see.

    2. I’m waiting for the longer ones. It would be great if they had some surprices for christmas, with a 600 prime f5.6 or something. Not too big and expensive. Wonder how things will be with the 100-400 and extender. We’ll see next year!

    1. If it’s like many other lenses, the sharpness will be better and focusing faster, but the character of the f/1.4 lens will be nicer.
But I am also curious on this one, even though I already have the current 35mm.

    2. As in brick wall IQ? It’s possible. Is the F1.4 not good enough .. have you used it? I think Fuji even openly said about the F1.4 that it was designed for a characteristic rendering in mind more than anything else. That often comes at the costs of measurable performance.

Zeiss did the same thing with the ZM line by offering a classic 50/1.5 C-Sonnar that is quite ‘soft’ but very unique, and a 50/2 Planar that is crispy sharp with a more modern rendering.

  4. 1- It looks really gorgeous in Silver color on a silver X-T10.
2- Due to it’s shape, I guess it’s been designed with range finder style bodies in mind (X-PROn). Shrinking diameter of the body toward the lens front will help less blocking the OVF.
3- On the EVF only bodies, the benefits are weather sealing (targets X-T1) and smaller size.
4- Mentioned fact #2 plus WR suggests X-PRO2 is gonna be WR, as FR said many times 😉

  5. if you think about it, the form factor of the new 35mm might give a clue as to the size and form of the x-pro2. I’m beginning to believe the rumours the x-pro2 will be smaller.

    1. That’s not the official hood. This one is a screw type hood, while you can see that the bayonet for the actual hood remains unused. My guess is the official hood will look similar to the x100 hood.

  6. Interesting that it’s cheaper. It’s tipped to be sealed and offer faster AF. The price of the 35/1.4 has dropped so much, I wouldn’t have been surprised if the starting price for the new model had been dearer than the street price for the old.

I don’t use the 35mm FL that much. My main interest in this lens would be if it signals the start of a series of smaller sealed lenses in say 16/2.8 and 23/2. I’d also be interested in a small tele lens – maybe a 75/2.4 or something similar a sensible step up from the 55mm of the zooms.

  7. The original 35mm 1.4 hood is all about the vintage look, but like you said it was terrible for filters. That is why I love what they did on the 50-140mm hood with a little door for the filter adjustment, pure genius. Wish all petal hoods had that.

  8. “XF35mmF2 WR will cost lessthan the XF35mmF1.4”

In other news, Pope IS catholic, and bears do shit in the woods. Who knew?
