RUMOR UPDATE: Faster AF for the 2nd generation XF35mm!

 photo 35_zps178acdcd.jpg

the XF35mm is still out of stock in USA, after the latest lens deal, which ended Apirl 8th

_ _ _

A new source contacted me via rumor box. It gave itself a nickname, so that I can recognise it in future.

This source told me two things. First: it confirms that Fuji plans to update the 35mm lens previously rumored by a source who was right in the past here. It says that:

1) “the 35mm is going to be rereleased however don’t expect huge changes this is going to be more of an update of the same lens (AF motor as far as I know) to bring it up to standard of the [shoplink 21554]56mm[/shoplink] and [shoplink 16128]23mm[/shoplink]. “

No word about weather sealing.

The second rumor? I can not share it at the moment, because the new source said:

2) “Please confirm it with your other sources first as marketing department might change the plans“.

And that is what I did last night. I’ve contacted my sources and asked them to check it.

As the new source wrote me via rumor box, I can not contact it. I just wanted to let the source know: thanks for sharing, and I’m doing my homework right now ;-).

Dear readers, please understand that I can not share it now. I’m 100% loyal to my sources and, if they want me to check it before sharing, I will do it. It’s fundamental to build up a relationship of 100% trust with them.

And I also understand why this new source asked me to be careful with the information. In fact, one of the big problems when you’re writing about Fujifilm rumors, is that the company changes plans pretty often, as they constantly look at the market and feedback from photographers.

Therefore, if I check back in the past, I see rumors that were correct at the time of sharing, but afterwards Fuji did some changes and I had to update the rumor in order to keep you up to date with Fuji’s latest plans.

That said, the Japanese source already promised me a feedback about the second rumor ASAP ;-).

stay tuned on Facebook, google+, RSS-feed and Twitter

    1. If they’ve got a better motor they can use, makes sense. Any idea how much better it really is? How much faster would it be?

      1. Well I don’t know the 35 is the only prime I have so don’t know how nice the new ones are, LFM on the zooms is fast.

  1. I absolutely LOVE my 35mm lens. Sadly, right before photographing a wedding, the lens made one horrible grinding noise and the AF died. Fortunately I bought it in January and it’s still under warranty. It’s at Fuji’s repair place in NJ and fingers crossed! I can’t wait for it to come back.

  2. Makes sense that it would be the same optically (it’s a proven formula). Faster AF makes sense, since much has changed since it was released. I’d almost certainly expect an AF/MF clutch and probably weathersealing on all future lenses as well. Can’t wait! This lens is on the short list.

  3. Here’s some photographer feedback:

    * Weather seal everything from now on

    * AF/MF clutches on everything

    * Aperture rings on everything with better resistance

    * More precise distance scale markings (more increments) for zone focusing on every lens

    * Fast, Faster, Fastest Focus

    1. Agree on everything except the AF/MF clutches. Pain in the butt. I am curious: what do you like about them? I would much rather be able to use instant AF and fine tune via manual without having to pull a clutch.
The aperture rings seriously need more resistance. They put a permanent lock on the X-T1 ISO dial yet the aperture rings are so loose a slight breeze could agitate them. Would love to see that fixed on future lenses.

      1. AF with twist to adjust is also great. Maybe they could include both. I like the clutch for mode switching by feel, but not at the expense of weather sealing, if that presents a problem. 🙂

      1. I think OIS is necessary for a 35mm lens. At least, you can shoot at 1/10s handheld in lowlight interior.

        1. I see a lot of demand for OIS in fast primes…
Why ? The light weight of mirrorless cameras ? The fact that they are more “modern” than DSLRs ?

Anyway, I wonder if Fuji shouldn’t adapt some sort of IBIS to the X-Pro2… This would solve the problem for all lenses at once.

OIS is not a universal solution. It is more effective, but makes lenses bigger, heavier, more expensive, more prone to failure or decentering problems. IBIS can be a better solution, it depends on the lens.

          1. @LeFred if it was an IBIS solution, then you’d have to have some sort of couteracting solution to have a stabilized image on the EVF. The beauty of an OIS is that it can be exactly tailored/adapted to each individual lens.

          2. Do you mean on the OVF ?
IBIS can be calibrated for each lens, but you are right, not tailored like OIS.
An f/1.4 OIS lens doesn’t sound very realistic though. IBIS can take advantage of an image circle which is often slightly larger than the sensor.

Both IBIS and OIS have advantages and drawbacks. I think the 35mm f/1.4 is typically a lens that in my opinion would benefit more from IBIS than OIS.

    1. No it don’t need OIS it maybe nice to have and I’m got shaky hands. I be happy with a faster AF.

  4. No surprise, really… the 35mm was their first gen x-mount lenses.. nice optics, but notoriously slow compared to the latest gen of XF lenses. Great to hear AF speed will improve.. hopefully, the fly by wire MF will also be refined!

It wouldn’t hurt them to maybe squeeze a bit more sharpness out when wide open while they’re updating this nice prime.

Not sure if OIS in a 35mm is necessary…. I would prefer they consider IBIS in their X-Pro2 and any future updates to the other X ILC’s. That would stabilize everything, end of discussion.

Sure, most of the zoom lenses have the OIS already, perhaps consider it redundant, but having IBIS would open up a world more possibilities.. not only stabilize all the primes (old & new), but any other 3rd party glass as well. Panasonic never had it, but they were good to start to implement it into their GX7.. though, wonder why they didn’t try to squeeze it into their latest and greatest GH4 with video being such an important aspect of that camera system..

Anyways, this might mean they may update the other 2 1st gen primes, the 18 & 60.

I would welcome a MF clutch like on the 14 & 23 lenses on the new 35mm.

  5. After years of shooting with no IS on anything that wasn’t a telephoto and with film speeds where 800 and up looked bad, I have a hard time understanding people saying they need IS in a 35mm.
This rumor led me to go ahead and buy the Zeiss deal. I had thought the update would include sharpening up the corners are wide apertures, but if its just the AF motor, the Zeiss deal seems great.

    1. Many people also have no problem without AF. You can make a really small high quality manual 35 mm lens, but most choose to go the other direction. Just take a look at the Sigma 50mm f1.4 weighing 815g.

    2. I agree. IS helps a lot with long tele primes (200mm and up) and tele zooms (70-200 etc.), but for bright primes the cost in terms of increased weight and a potential slight loss in IQ makes it more interesting without IS IMO. I do not even miss IS on the 24-70/2.8 too much, since you need the shutter speed as soon as anything is moving anyway and that makes IS only useful to some extent from around 50 mm and up on FF.

  6. I’m just about to get the existing 35mm 1.4. But should I hold up on 2.0 if its only the AF? Or should I get the 23mm 1.4 instead? The 23mm is quite a bit more expensive where I’m at.

    1. 35mm 1.4 is a very good lens and very versatile. If change is only gonna be the AF, picking up a 35mm at a good price might be better. the 23mm is a different lens, if you are thinking about getting the 56mm in future then the 23mm would be a good option also.
below a picure taking with the 35mm to show you the angle.

    2. If you can wait, wait and see. You can still get the current 35 then i suppose and it will be even cheaper.
Of course you can take some nice pictures in the meantime, if you get it now. 😉

      1. Thanks mate. I can only wait about 2 weeks 🙁 I have a friends wedding I’m planning to help shoot for and hopefully we get it before then.

        1. Well, you won’t get the 35 mk II before then. But for a wedding the 23 is probably the better choice if you want to go reportage style like Kevin Mullins for example. With the 35 you have to step back quite a bit if you want to get a couple of people in a picture together. That is not always possible.

  7. Am I the only one who’dlike them to make the Mk II an f1,2 le s? Weath sealing not needed here, I don’t shoot in rain, as most other people don’t either…
Other than that I am perfectly fine with Mk I. On my old X-E1 it is more reliable in focussing than the 18-55mm and clearly faster than the 56mm f1,2.

  8. @ Admin

Get the other old lens (60 2.4 macro) of the fuji x system launch an update too?

It has the same slowish AF ??

Or do we get another (longer) fuji macro lens with 1:1 function meaning a real macro lens….not an handicapped one? And as the answer from fuji with regard to the zeiss 50 2.8 macro??

  9. Don’t run to get it. It needs to be much more ‘you don’t know anything jon snow’ to fill the shoes of the old 35.
