It seems that this time, the rumor shared first here on FR was correct: Lightroom 6 will come on Tuesday, April 21. There is a teaser about an imminent launch of “something BIG” at lightroomkillertips. Scott Kelby doesn’t expressly say it’s LR 6, but it’s very likely that we will soon see the rumor confirmed… and see if Adobe has improved the X-Trans demosaicing.

My prediction is that it’s not going to have anything new except one or two tools. Lightroom 5 wasn’t much of an upgrade. What will it be missing? A decent curves tool and levels. The camera calibration control which should really be at the top of the develop module will still be buried at the bottom. Adobe Standard will still suck. We’ll still be using the awful 2012 processing method too. Photomechanic will still be faster at culling. It’ll be slow and laggy until they get to version 6.5 or 6.6. Hooray for Creative Cloud. Too bad DxO doesn’t support Fuji – I’d jump ship!

LR4 and LR5 were night and day when it came to its clone tool. I couldn’t remove blemishes or pimples much at all with LR4 but I find LR5 quite acceptable that I never had to learn PS.
if it’s still 2012 then it’s going to have to offer something fairly significant to get me to upgrade from 4. I do find LR useful for many things but Photo Ninja (and indeed just about everything else) is much better for Xtrans development
My guess for improved demosaicing of the X-Trans sensor is; No. I think Adobe feels it has reached the “good enough” level.
They always have been masters of “good enough”.
Does either of you have any good articles on which is best to develop Fuji raw files? Tried some stuff between other software and LR but don’t see much difference myself. I do want to get the most out of my camera so wouldn’t mind seeing how to better than LR can. But it would probably mess up my workflow?
Of you’re on a Mac, they say Iridient is really good. Otherwise, I’ve read good things about Capture One.
If you own a Mac, Iridient Developer is very good. Capture One Pro 8 comes very close. I use both. Just download the trial versions of all three then use one RAF with fine detail and start your own comparison. That’s what I did. LR5 just did not hold up well at all with the conversion. I use it to rid my images of purple fringing if I have that problem but that’s about it.
I shoot portraiture. So Capture One gives the best results for me, IMO. I did a comparison among PhotoNinja, Iridient, Capture One, and Lightroom. And Capture One seems to the best for human subjects. It’s a tad bit sharper and the skin tones look nicer.
But like you said, there isn’t much difference unless you zoom 100%. And like others have said, LR is good enough. I tried to get used to the C1 workflow, but it felt too clunky for me. I ended up going back to LR.
Right now, speed and workflow is more important than extracting more detail or getting a slightly better skin tone. Besides, the film simulations in LR gets it pretty good with skin tone.
Jack of all trades, Master of none; so they say
None of the features Adobe is touting really excite me but LR6 is *supposed to be* much much faster. If true, that alone will be worth the upgrade.
I don’t expect any change for X-Trans development.
The change for the demosaicing algorithm itself will be evolutionary (if any). But most likely we’ll see much more GPU utilization.
Laptop owners are out of luck a priori.
Not if you have a Mac Book Pro with the discrete GPU.
Discrete or not, it won’t ever come close to a dedicated video card (GeForce GTX 9** series, for example).
Well, yes. Powerful desktops already beat laptops for Lightroom work. But more GPU optimizations will also help both platforms.
Don’t hold your breath ~ Adobe has never been great at Raw conversions for any files, let along the Fuji RAF files. Adobe is good for many other things, but not RAW file conversions.
I completely agree, their handling of saturated colors like stage lights is abysmal, no comparison to CaptureOne. The sharpening annoys me every time I have to use it. Some genius also decided to store a complete copy of all Camera Raw settings in Develop History every time you touch a setting, which has bloated my catalog file to over 2 GB by now. If at least they used a separate file for that! And then they won’t even support storing the catalog file on a network drive. I don’t even mean accessing it from multiple computers, just storing it on a simple NAS RAID connected via Gigabit Ethernet. Have I mentioned the application is extremely sluggish even with small catalogs and 12 MP files? And that it flickers like hell on a recent MacMini?
And then their train wreck of a mobile workflow: Upload to the cloud and download from the cloud, meaning it takes forever to sync and can’t be used without fast internet, and you would have to send your clients’ data around the world to be stored on servers in the US, which clients won’t accept here here in Europe thanks to the NSA scandal. And then LR mobile won’t let you create virtual copies and refuses to import raw images on the device. The new heart flag can’t even be synced with LR Desktop (hopefully the Tuesday update will finally fix that after more than half a year). And every time you update LR Mobile, it quietly re-enables that “Send usage data to Adobe” option behind your back. Great.
The issue is that unfortunately with Aperture gone, Lightroom currently does not have any real competition that would force Adobe to stop smoking weird stuff in the clouds and actually get their product fixed. But looking at the names in the about screen, they seem to somehow have opted to outsource development to China for the last release instead.
There will be a LR6 if Adobe Camera RAW will be updated.
Both make use of the same editing engine. So IF LR6 will be released we will also see a new ACR version. The latter has just recently been updated. So I am not so sure that a new version of Lightroom is imminent.
On the other hand Photoshop World is due in 3 days.
http://photoshopworld.com
It will be really BIG: 56 Gb install file, 17 Gb of presets, 10 Gb of sample files and almost a terabyte of mandatory tutorial downloads in 4K!
Oh yes. I still remember very well when they bloated the app from about 300 MB to over a GB with presets for a book module that to this date is completely useless for anything but blurb since it cannot use standard or custom page sizes…
Probably they had some sort of exclusive endorsement deal with the book manufacturers… But all they managed to accomplish was an enormous increase of sales for Lumapix and Fundy.
If it has photo stitching for panos and HDR stacking like they said it would, then I’ll be happy not having to use photoshop at all!
Please. I BEG OF YOU. Don’t post anything by this Jerk Kelby. Please….
LOL!!
August 11th is a long 3 days!
More likely a new membership plan to Kelby training or a new Kelby book or maybe the Kelby headquarters moved to a new building.
Now I will share with you guys my BIG secret…
I use RAW FILE CONVERTER EX 2.0 powered by SILKYPIX and I CAN’T recognize the quality of my pictures!! I shoot raw and I wasn’t happy at all with the LR output. If you like me use windows I recommend you to try this light converter and you’ll be amazed by the sharpness and powerful control over your raw files. With this software I feel the power behind the fuji engine 🙂 (for mac I know irridient developer does a good job, but I’m on windows)
LR only tries to “mimic” the colors of fuji !!
I’ll have to look into this. I’ve heard silk pix isn’t good at recovering shadows/highlights- how have you found this?
Adobe lightroom page can not be reach, this is about to happen!
Scott has postponed the training videos from 9am to 1 pm EST. Does that mean waiting until an eternity until it’s morning in California? And now LR page can be reached but it still shows 5.7
