IBELUX 40mm f/0.85 + X-T1: First Impressions and samples of world’s fastest lens for Fuji-X cameras

 photo fujixibelux_zps00f60352.jpg

Now, over at the Japanese site dc.watch (translation) you can read the first impressions of this lens Ibelux f/0.85 and see some samples and crops. From the (cryptic google translated) conclusions:

“In terms of earning the amount of blurring, image sensors have an advantage as large. This is a translation come led to the needs of the full-size mirror-less, but if IBELUX 40mm F0.85, can enjoy a large blurring in Micro Four Thirds machine and APS-C machine.

This time, it was trial in combination with X-T1 of the APS-C machine, but it was feeling of being with a large aperture standard lens to full size machine while you are taking. Can you blurred a lot there is no need to compromise on the subject in order to earn a blur, simply by opening the aperture on the spot.

Because it goes to the sharp prudently in F2.8 or later, there is no sensitive part that is common among habit ball, it is easy to use as a prime lens. How to use a snap lens basis because there is a strict weight, but will someone to be a good partner to work making. “

  1. The 40mm-f/0.85 combination offered by the Ibelux lens is for sure very appealing to X-shooter or any photographers using cameras with a sensors smaller than the 135 format and looking for paper-thin DoF and smooth bokeh. However, I don’t think a 1.2kg, 12.8cm-long 2000US$ lens with a standard “general-purpose” focal length is a good value proposition to any CSC/mirrorless users.
Having recently switched from a canon full-frame system to the X-T1, I was naturally eager to reproduce most of the rendering I got with the EF 50/1.2L, and at first I considered the Ibelux and the SLR Magic Hyperprime lenses. I eventually found a better solution in the combination of a Metabones Speedbooster and a canon FD 50mm f/1.2L, which overall results in a 36mm f/0.9 system which is twice as short and heavy as the Ibelux lens, while costing only 900 US$ or less to assemble… Now, that’s what I call an excellent value proposition, and the image result I get with the X-T1 is even sharper with a narrower DoF (!) than what I got with my 6D+EF50/1.2L.
I also got a FD135/2 (=96mm f/1.4), which yields stellar performances on the Fuji camera and I’ll get a FD85/1.2L (=60mm f/0.9) to complete this happy family on a limited budget 🙂

    1. Indeed. There are very few instances where APS-C lenses looking to replicate the look/DOF/field of view of full frame 35mm camera lenses will actually be smaller. Much of the time, they will dwarf their competition. At best, they will be the same size or only slightly more compact.

    2. To get even closer, the Canon FL 55/1.2 will get you to 39mm, f/0.9 (only because the Speed Booster maxes out at 0.9, otherwise it’d be 0.85 too). I have this combo, and it’s excellent. Looking at the samples of the Ibelux, the FL55+SB is significantly better wide open, and total cost to me was about $650…and I can use my speed booster on other lenses too.
