  1. When using a vertical battery grip i always get lost with the controls, the re-adjusting is more annoying than to simply hold it vertically, or to replace the battery when it’s (getting) empty. But i’m sure there’s plenty of reasons for somebody.

    1. I find shooting the X E’s in Vertical A pain, Maybe the size but can do it. The grip in cold weather and giving 2 batteries to draw off of makes it worth having.

    2. In part a battery grip is meant (as I understand it) to be about stability. In landscape orientation you can tuck both elbows into your side. In portrait mode (without a grip) one, or the other, elbow “flops about”. The extra set of controls on a battery grip means you can hold the camera more comfortably with your elbows at the side of your body – so it should be more stable.

Whether that matters with image stabilisation – or if you only shoot one or two portrait shots every now and again – well that’s up to each photographer I guess.

  2. Much more comfortable if shooting portrait orientation for hours on end than twisting your arm around. Extra battery power is helpful also, think timelapse of more than a couple of hundred shots.

  3. I only have to remember to grab the camera rather than the camera and an extra battery. At this age I will take any memory trick that gives me an advantage. I also simply find a camera with a grip much more comfortable to hold. Besides the extra battery simply provides a sense of comfort and less concern about the risk of running out of power. Oh, and it looks cool. That has to count.

      1. I know English isn’t your native tongue. I don’t know if you’re aware of it even now, but “get a grip” has a double meaning. That’s why I suggested it. I was delighted that you took my advice; reading your headlines is sometimes half the fun.

  4. To be honest, if I had wanted something like this I would have kept my pair of Nikon D2H bodies. While not the ISO capabilities of the Fujis, I used the D2H for press work for a decade and they never failed to produce.

For now, I will keep (and learn) my X100S and X-E1 w/35mm f1.4. Am retired now so nothing else is needed. I will make these fit what I want to do with the rest of my photographic life….

  5. Is it me or does it seem like a missed opportunity to have both batteries in the grip ala Canon? Pulling the grip off to get at the other battery sounds like a pain and a huge oversite…

    1. yes..
nut there is an advantage, too.
the battery on the grip is the first to be used, so you can change the battery, without switch off the camera,( i think)..

but i do agree a 2 batteries grip it would be better.

  6. What a idiocracy… The DSLR is dead… long live the DSLR! Or how reinventing something brings you back to the same old story. What’s next? A bigger sensor with even bigger lenses? Zooms with tripod supports? Most of all, I’m missing the part the X-series are a cheap solution – it has become one of the most expensive APS/C solutions in the market. A lot of people just want to believe a story this is precisely how hyping works. I’ve got nothing against Fuji, but we’re now at a point the whole concept is something completely different from what the X-Pro1 promised to be. In the last I could believe, in this, no.

    1. Make a small calculation.

      X-T1 + XF56mm F1.2 = 2500€
      D800 + 85mm F1.8 (delivering the same DOF) = 2500€. With the D610, subtract 300€ off that number.

I own both the X-Pro1 & D800, both are excellent cameras but the D800 is having one very best FF-sensors in the market playing in a completely different league than the X-Pro1 regarding resolution, dynamics and overall speed & flexibility. Even the D610 is delivering you better, hands down. All weather sealed stuff.

Don’t ever think the AF-S 85mm F1.8G is a worse performer than the XF56mm F1.2R, it isn’t, this is within the Nikkor world the best price/performance portrait lens. Also a very solid one, built to last more than one generation of camera. This is also paying you a ticket to 55 years of fully working legacy F-glass and the magnificent Nikon CLS flash system, Fuji… euh, well, euh,…can’t you do it with our relabeled hobby-kit Sunpaks?

I’m pretty sure a lot of the Fuji-glass will end up on the second hands market between now and 2 years, since the design of the XF18/35/60mm is already surpassed and much slower vs the newer lenses.

I’m really not selling Nikon here, just want to make the case. Sorry, the Fuji stuff is at least 30% too expensive for what it’s really worth, it’s only pairing with the D7100s and 7Ds of this world and the X-T1 is hype camera only there to pull some people away from the DSLR market.

The good right for Fuji to do so, but I don’t see the reason. The niche that was created with the X-Pro1 and its form factor was extremely interesting, also the value of this beautiful EVF/OVF concept a very big differentiator over a lot of other cameras. Why is there no FF in these cameras – that would make a big differentiator and potentially even erase the Sony and Leica competition.

I’m very afraid it will go the opposite sense now. the XT-1 should have been a weather sealed X-Pro2 with a FF sensor at about this price-level to keep the X-series where they belong.

Oh, last but not least, yes the weight. X-T1 = 1175g, D800 1250g. What a joke.

      1. I don’t know which website you got those weight information from. According to dpreview spec X-T1 + battery = 440g maybe + your left brain = 1175g. And D800 + battery = 900g + your right brain = 1120g. Oh wait your left and right brains are uneven so no wonder you can’t compare.
