I’ve 2 updates regarding the Fuji X70
1) A source, who was right in the past, says that the X70 it will feature the X-TransII 16MP sensor. It will cost less than $1000 and be very compact.
2) A trusted source (who contacts me via rumor box using a nick-name) says it will feature a 28mm lens (which I suppose to be equivalent, this would mean about 18 or 19mm lens on APS-C).
As already rumored earlier, it will be EVF-less

APS-C sensor ?
yep… same as X-T1
this will be the Leica Q for the rest of us,broke as hell :))
what is the point of a 28mm?
jehhh
the GRII is much less than 1000usd
16mp…also…
i much prefer a 35mm
Why fixed lens again? Let it come with a compact zoom and Panasonic´s LX100 will be put to shame…
Agreed, should have a collapsable fixed zoom. But if they haven’t sorted out their video performance what use is there entering the market against Sony and Panasonic high end compacts? Its not important for me but what reviewers will recommend it over the competition with such glaring flaws?
I don’t think a small zoom compact with an APS-C sensor (and fast aperture) could be… compact. Look at the LX100 – it isn’t compact either.
Then it only uses a fraction of the 4/3 sensor, which is smaller than APS-C by quite a bit.
Furthermore the lens on the LX100 – how to put this nicely? – it sucks. (so does the X100 lens to a certain degree).
But let’s wait and see, maybe the Fuji is magic 😉
To make a point just look at the link: the X100 is even smaller (in depth, which is what matters when you carry it in your pocket) than the LX100. And that, with a sensor that uses more than twice the area!
The Ricoh GR is where we need to go. A bit thicker with a faster lens would be appreciated.

yeah, “compact” is a matter of definition and taste. The Canon G1 X is also a compact camera. I didn´t mean compact in sense of a RX100. I see no point for another APS-C compact Fuji with a fixed lens. Because there´s already the X100 which will get the new sensor in a few months. So, what will be the difference then? Old 16MP sensor in the X70 and new sensor in the X100 successor? Maybe some viewfinder specs… Then you can also get an “old” X100T.
Anything about an X30 replacement yet, Admin?
nothing until now… not even a whisper
Is it possible Fuji is ditching all sensor sizes except of APS-C? Also, is it possible 28mm(eq) is actually a zoom lens starting at 28mm?
The rumor also says “very compact”. With no OVF/EVF a very compact APS-C body is possible (the proof is X-M1). A collapsible 2X zoom 28-56mm(eq) f/2.8-4.0 would also not impact the size, but would be within the range of X100 series with wide and tele converters, at the aperture penalty to retain compact design and not compete with X100T.
If all that is true, X70 (or whatever the name will be) may in a way be a functional replacement for X30 with much better sensor, effectively killing 2/3″ sensor line. I think that would be one very smart move by Fuji, but let’s wait and see.
Thank you.
WHY couldn’t they use a new sensor? 🙁
To keep it cheap?
Still the same old sensor… Sigh.
Incorrect – the X-70 has a fixed lens and is the follow up of the current X-30 which features a 2/3rd 12 megapixel sensor.
X30 has a zoom lens and an EVF, neither of which the X70 will have. The admin says in a comment below that the X70 will have APS-C sensor, substantially larger than the X30.
This isn’t a followup to the X30; it’s a cheaper X100 — much as the X-T10 is a cheaper X-T1.
Next year, the x100T also will cost less than €1000.
So what is the Message of the x70, what is the Story?
We’ve got two 28mm (135 equivalent) already and they are called Nikon Coolpix A & Ricoh GR… And they don’t have EVF either…
Would be more interesting if 1. The same x100 wide conversion lens can be used or 2. Features an optical finder that shows exposure, aperture and shutter speed or 3. An even wider 21/24mm equivalent lens to further differentiate from the X100 series and existing competitors.
Boris, I could not agree more!
Let’s be honest: the X-Trans II still is an excellent sensor. Using it will keep costs down and allow to launch this camera earlier (if it got the new sensor it would probably have to wait until the X-Pro, X-T and X100 refreshed are done – which would mean 2017)
A new lens is welcome, but personally I would have preferred 28mm on the new X100.
The 28mm is not necessarily “equivalent”, because a real 28mm lens would make it 42mm equivalent; which is close enough to the de facto travel P&S focal length in the 1970s.
Yeah, got to imagine this is an actual 28mm lens, meaning a normal 42mm perspective. I can’t see the point of going head-to-head with the Ricoh GR, Leica Q and Nikon A (all 28mm or equivalent) at the very wide end of the spectrum for a fixed lens camera when no one is playing in the 40-50mm space.
At least, I hope I’m correct. I like my GR for street photography, but it would be nice to have a 42mm compact option.
And I do hope with this style camera, Fuji has a decent zone focus implementation. Ricoh has its snap focus. Leica has a classic distance scale on the lens barrel.
Fuji, for all of its focus on traditional controls, never implemented a quick way to adjust zone/hyperfocal focus on the X100 series. I don’t want to fiddle with an (inaccurate) electronic scale every time I adjust the aperture.
28mm equivalent? good! 24mm would be even better!
X70 concept
http://jeanmareaux.blog.hu/2015/11/18/fuji_x70
nice concept – I tried understanding by just looking at the pictures and picking out a word or two. ^^
But there was one mistake I noticed right away: you moved the 27mm innwards by what is the flange distance. However lenses (especially the 27mm!) to not stop at the flange distance. This is what is called back focus distance and it can go down to 10.2mm
Take a look here: http://www.fujifilm.com/products/digital_cameras/x/fujifilm_x_pro1/features/page_02.html
Furthermore those lenses are designed with the air between them and sensor in mind (they are near telecentric but not 100%). So this would change the lens design a bit again.
All in all a nice concept with some small mistakes. Thing is: we are talking about 18mm and not 27mm. And for a concept of those, take a look at the GR or Coolpix A. Personally I’d hope to get a faster than f/2.8 lens, but let’s wait and see
X70 concept has a collapsing lens. Plus you do not take into account the
different sensor positions X100 vs XE-1. This can be seen here:
http://m.cdn.blog.hu/je/jeanmareaux/FEDman/test/X70concept/gif_x70_02.gif
This would be a clever way of reusing the 27mm f/2.8 design !
But what about weatherproofing ?
Ok, now I think I get what you are trying to say/show.
But that’s probably not the way you would design such a camera/lens.
A fixed focal length in a compact (fixed lens) camera would use every millimetre available.
RX1 or X100 are perfects examples for this. Just take a look:
http://www.finepix-x100.com/en/story
Not always.
Ricoh GR and Coolpix A is a collapsing fixed lens compact camera. 😉
Ehhh update the old XF18mm to a new set of optics and newer af. I’d buy it in a heartbeat.
Why not make the x70 with a fast 50mm equivalent and stop copying Leica
Ehhh update the old XF18mm to a new set of optics and newer af. I’d buy it in a heartbeat.
Why not make the x70 with a fast 50mm equivalent. The 35 in the x100 series is wide enough
i still think they should buy a batch of 1″ senor from sony and put X-trans CFA on it and crate soemthing similar to G5x or LX100.
yep. that sounds logical. But that would be the concept for a new X40. Will there be successor to the X30? Hopefully not with the outdated 2/3 inch type.
Very compact? The X-T10 is already rather small (too tiny for my personal taste) and features an X-Trans II sensor. There is an 18 mm lens and a really small very nice 27 mm lens. I bet you could get the combination with the 27 for under $1000, especially once the new sensor is out in the X-Pro 2. So I don’t really see the point of such an X70.
Also, naming it X70 clashes with the X30 line after only three more models, at which point Nikon-style naming confusion mess will ensue. As sensor technology improves, the X10/20/30 type of smaller sensor camera will actually get more and more attractive since we’ll be able to get the quality of current APS-C sensors from that size, which is already far beyond what is needed for 90% of applications.
sounds like the xpro2 wil have a 16mp x-trans II sensor too…
ehm…, no. The X70 is a camera at another price level and a different concept than the X-Pro2.
Nomenclature seems funny: Why 70 and what does it means related to 100? 50 would have been a more logical and easy name. Does 70 mean there will be other two iterations of the camera (80 and 90) Is it to put a wide space between the X30 and this?
Because it’s 70% of a X100, not half.
And definitely more than twice the X30.
Mistery solved! ;-P
Add a viewfinder and I might buy it..
Suspect it will be an 18mm f2.
XT10 size might be perfect size. No VF though is just a no go. Don’t use then don’t use it. Atleast have it…you know…just in case. Wink wink.
Less than $1000? I spent much less for my XA-1 and 18mm Fujinon.
28mm and no EVF will make it a niche product, like Coolpix A or GR/GRII
I would absolutely love an X100T with a 28-31mm (42-45mm) 1.8 lens! But seeing how Fuji has treated the X100s buyers with no updates. I don’t think I’d buy one unless it was perfect from the get go. Id pay 1200 for one of the lens was fast focusing and optically…extremely good.
I can buy an X-E2 with the 18mm lens for less than $1k as well.
Or a ton of potatoes.
Yes but the X-E2 is easier to hold, even when buttered.
X70…. whatever….. Why have we not heard about an update to the flagship camera, the X100. Yes I said flagship as this is the mainstay camera and the one that started it all. I log onto this site a few times a week in hopes of just a hint of what is to come… anything would be welcomed at this point.
I fail to see any reason for this camera!!
Admin, any news about upcoming X100T firmware update(s)?
16MP – great!
Very compact – awesome!
18mm lens (28mm equivalent) – not so much. We already have the GR with the exact same specs and incredible IQ.
But if it is actual 28mm – good! I found that the XF 27mm is the lens I use the most, so I would definitely consider a X-camera with this focal length in a pocketable body. Fingers crossed…
It will be and EVF only X100S or T camera without ND filter, aperture ring and focus ring. There is no reason to put another lens than the actual one: it would overlap with current offerings and it would then be cheaper to purchase an XE2 with the 27, 18 or 35 mm.
Outdated sensor, boring lens, no EVF, in a segment that is already incredibly niche.
The 16mp sensors don’t even have enough pixels to cover the width of my monitor. There’s no advantage to them, at this point. The 24mp sensors shipping in most other APS-C cameras already perform as well or better. As for no EVF, I find that difficult to believe unless this thing is going to be absolutely microscopic in size. Even the dopey X30 has an EVF. Regarding 28mm, while yes, there are other cameras with that FL, why bother? You’re not going to get meaningful DoF effects unless it’s extremely bright so suddenly there’s little real value to an APS-C sensor in there vs. 1″. The fact is, the latest 1″ sensors from Sony perform nearly as well as APS-C in nearly every situation besides very low light (and even then, the results are shockingly good.) So it would make much more sense to buy something like an RX100.
What might make sense, and would be at least somewhat appealing to me, would be X100T minus the OVF, which I find utterly ridiculous (terrible user experience, and no actual value over EVF for this kind of camera) which would be enough of a difference to cut the price significantly as well as the size. Same lens, and even the same sensor would be tolerable though 24mp preferred. X-trans will really shine on 24mp. Anyway, I find this rumor hard to believe, but, if it turns out to be true, it will be fairly disappointing. It will be very difficult to justify the camera over a cell phone, frankly.
Good luck, Fuji.
While I don’t share your take on the X100T, I agree that these “X70 plans” (provided the rumor is even true) seem utterly stupid. The camera would not only be “rather outdated” but be placed in a niche of a niche…
Here’s an idea. Why not make this style of camera ILC? Make the lenses screw down into the body like a light bulb, instead of screw on top of the built-in 23mm lens.
Thoughts?
“…so suddenly there’s little real value to an APS-C sensor in there vs. 1″.”
You smoking somethin’…or did you just forget the laws of physics?
Anyway, I assume no-one put a gun to your head and forced you to buy a Fujifilm camera. Don’t like their products? Buy a consumer electronics camera, aka a Sony.
I Guess this X70 is meant to compete against the Ricoh GR?
Pretty sure that anyone who wants a camera like this already has a GR.
Also, of course the price will be under 1k. No way it could be over.
Agreed.
This appears to be a Ricoh GR competitor and that came out a long time ago. This would make some sense if the firm ware is more upto date then the xt1 in respect to speed of image processing, new film simulation choices, better video and autofocus. If it is essentially an XE2 without an EVF I think it will have missed the mark
When will someone make a fixed lens APS-C with a 50mm (equiv) lens? All these 28’s and 35’s are great but Fuji should find a new market.
If you took the design of the new Fuji 35 f/2 and recessed it into an X-E2 body to make it fixed but overall smaller… That’d be a dream camera, or close to.
Kind of agree…was hoping for their 27mm (41mm) lens. Years ago, fixed lens 35mm compacts had lenses from 38-45mm. Just slightly wider than normal is ideal…maybe they mean 28mm (42)
I also believe they chose this option. It is probably going to be a Klasse S equivalent.
Nice, I actually prefer a 28mm. Let’s hope it’s great.
Boring. I love Fuji color but I think Ricoh GR rules this roost. Why not go after 50mm equivalent which seems long forgotten.
Love the idea, hate the name. Fujifilm already has an X lineup that I assume plans to grow. The X30 and X70 would be a combination of names that didn’t make sense to me.
In terms of the camera, really like the idea of the 28mm. With Instagram being the new medium for images I think wider is better (considering the crop factor). However like others have commented Ricoh really owns this space, this camera would have to be $500-600 to even compete.
Why not just buy am x-m1 and the 18mm…. Silly idea Fuji
makes no sense at all…
instead of entering a niche where theres is no competition,
a pocket 35mm or even 50mm aps-c camera,
they will go against nikon and ricoh, both with 16mp
and much cheaper than 1000usd…
