Fujifilm X-A2 is coming too… with second generation of XC lenses (OIS II)!

 photo asd_zpsd57ece3e.jpg

You know I keep saying that there will be two X-series cameras soon, a fixed lens one and a MILC.

The fixed lens one will the the XQ2.

… and the Fujifilm X-A2 is coming too. The information has just now been leaked by digicame-info, who also says that there will be an upgrade to the XC 16-50 and XC 50-230 (OIS II).

So what about the cheaper X-T1?

Here is a clarification I need to make, please read carefully.

While I was working to find out which camera the mysterious entry level MILC would be, I’ve received the rumor about the cheaper X-T1. And, although the source said it will come “this year”, I thought that this is finally the camera we were looking for, and I suggested that it could come early 2015.

But I have to be 100% unequivocal when I quote sources, and in fact the “cheaper X-T1” source never said it will come “early 2015” but just “this year”. Now the quote of the source is 100% clear!

So the state of the rumors is:

COMING SOON

  • XQ2

  • X-A2

THIS YEAR (2015)

  • Cheaper X-T1

  1. This would explain the X-A1 + 16-50 zoom for $350 CAD since Boxing Day in Canada.

    How would they improve on the XC lens? The only complaint I see are about the plastic mount breaking, so maybe that?

      1. I mean besides the OIS. Slightly improved build quality. I think the optics themselves are already good for this price.

        1. I bet they’ll be smaller physically, maybe even collapsed designs. The sony and olympus power zoom kit lenses make their systems look far smaller to carry than the Fuji’s with XC’s currently.

    1. And i just bought the xc 16-50. It had a good price, so i’m not complaining.

      (Along with a FUJI X-M1. This will be my first “serious” camera. Can’t wait to start shooting!

    1. the rumor at actioncamerarumors said that this is the last round for entry level, afterwards no more entry level

      1. Does seem strange to develop new kit lenses when there won’t be any more entry level. But that kinda thing is always up in the air. IF this new A2 sold like hotcakes I bet they’d keep the series going.

  2. I hope they come up with something different like a large sensor underwater cam (ala Nikon AW1) or infrared camera with selectable cutoff (590nm, 720nm and 850nm)

  3. I don’t care about any of these cameras, all I want to see is an X-Pro2…losing patience and the A7ii is looking pretty good right now.

        1. Do Canon’s flagship cameras become their worst performers after 3 years numb nuts? No, I didn’t think so.

    1. A7ii, like so many Sony cameras, LOOKS really enticing. And if the available lens is the one you need 😉 — go for it.

      But Fuji still has an amazing lens lineup. So does M43. Sony seems to have more cameras than native lenses — a very odd strategy.

      Sure, you can use an adapter, but that seems pretty compromised. And Sony’s roadmap doesn’t seem to include straight f/2.8 zooms or a competitor to the Fuji 56mm 1.2. or any native f/1.4 glass.

      And of course, the styling and controls of the Sony are likely not as appealing to Fuji fans.

      Sony does seem to be prioritizing speed, elsewhere, if not in their glass. Autofocus and burst rates are pretty impressive.

      Fuji’s autofocus in the XT1 silences a lot of criticism, but I’d love to see a mirrorless camera that truly destroys the very best DSLRs in tracking and low light. Then, its game over for the DSLR.

      1. The A7II would work pretty awesome with some Leica/Zeiss glass (save for the wide end of things). I really like the Fuji glass, my 23mm 1.4 is one of the best lenses I’ve owned…but it wasn’t cheap. For a few dollars more you can buy a Voigtlander 35mm 1.4 and couple with the A7II (with the added bonus of IBIS) the results would be far superior to my old X-Pro1.

        I’m a huge Fuji fan but the X-Pro2 (if it ever comes) better be a BIG step up.

      1. What if XA2 will be the Cheap XT1, minimal features not to rival XE2 just yet, but as XM and XA have scene dial instead of shutter speed like other Fuji bodies, it will be Fuji’s answer to Olympus Em10 which is selling really well and maybe start the transformation from vintage rangefinder in to SLR look. Not that I want that, but it would make sence, they need a cheap and easy hot selling entry model to get people in like cheap Olympus Pen did for M43.

  4. I guess there will be no X-Pro successor for a long time. Perhaps the X-Pro 2 is going to be a real surprise, as I dought they would wait this long, disappointing a lot of people, just for some incremental improvements. Perhaps they lied to us and it will be full frame, and they are stalling to develop full frame lenses for it. Or, they have something else up their sleeves. Whatever the delay is, hopefully it is worth the wait.

      1. Yes, most probably. I am more excited about the lens and controls. The sensor isn’t really an issue (good enough for a P&S), but I’d love more manual controls and as good a lens as possible.
        The whole package fitting in a small pocket and I’ll have it anywhere anytime!

  5. Really disappointed at not even a rumour on the X-Pro 2 at this stage. I was hoping it’d be one of the CP+ announcements, but that now seems unlikely. The X-T1 is a great camera but I miss the hybrid OVF.

    1. Maybe a development announcement at CP. Still don’t think the Pro2 will arrive before say September/October. Followed by an X-T2 the following Feb.

  6. The cheaper X-T1 rumor doesn’t make much sense to me, from a product line-up point of view…
    There is the X-E* series for rangefinder middle price, the X-T* for outdoors tough one, the X-Pro* for all specs at the top, the X-M/A* for a cheap package… where would a cheaper X-T1 fit???
    I would rather understand the rumor as the price of the X-T1 being decreased as soon as the X-Pro2 comes out.

  7. Can do with a 16-70 or 16-85 travel zoom. currently only 16-50, 18-55, 16-55 then jump straight to massive 18-135mm. i think theres definitely a market for middle ground. keep it XC, dont need full metal construction and all the weather sealed features to keep the cost and weight down.

    1. I think an accessory EVF would make more sense. That keeps the price of the actual camera lower (important in the entry-level market) and people spend money on the EVF afterwards, leaving a greater profit margin than if the viewfinder was built into the body.

      1. I actually like that idea. But not if the accessory EVF ends up costing $400. I almost wish Fuji made a line of accessory hotshoe OVF that matches up with their prime lens.

  8. OIS 2: Is this the same 5-stop stabilizer technology they introduced with the 18-135mm and 50-140mm?

    I wonder if there is any comparison between OIS 1 (18-55, 55-200, …) and the newer OIS. Not just about the stops they can compensate but also about their behavior. As I used the 18-55 for the first time, I was very surprised about the stabilizer. Mode 1 runs all the time and drains battery. Mode 2 is barely noticeable. With my old Tamron I was used to press the shutter button halfway and the stabilizier starts, just when you need it. Any differences in the behavior of the new OIS generation?

  9. Plastic is fine for me as long as Fuji keeps dust out of the zooms. I have some trouble with dust creeping into the zooms, one lens (16-50 mm) is already send to Fuji service after 6 months of use (not an issue with Nikon plastic zooms ever).
    A cheaper Xt1 makes sense because the existing xt1 is heavily overpriced compared to the image quality you get with xa1 and xm1 (XE1/XE2) at present., but it’s also overpriced in comparison with other camera brands.

  10. Re the cheaper X-T1. This is very much a possible thought and not based on any information, but the situation regarding lenses is now somewhat similar to that before the X-T1 was introduced. At that time the 18-55 and 55-200 zooms did not really appear to fit into the rangefinder body system, and then the X-T1 appeared.

    Now we have the 16-55 and 50-140 zooms, with the 140-400 on the road map, which appear to be large for the X-T1, but would be a perfect fit for a X-T2 which was, slightly, larger than the X-T1 and which would have improved focussing among other improvements and dual SD card slots.

    If Fuji then do what Olympus did with the MD5/MD1, which was to reduce the price of the earlier model, then the result would be a cheaper X-T1. Your thoughts?

  11. The new lenses show unfortunately that there will be no IBIS in future Fuji camera bodies. That is very sad! Lenses could be smaller and lighter without OIS. And usage of those great Fuji primes would realy win from IBIS. An X-A2 with IBIS would go head-to-head with the rumored Sony A7000 and those terrific Olympus cameras.

  12. Doesn’t make that much sense – we now have the possibility of 3 new low-end cameras while Fuji claimed to be focusing on the mid/high end. Is there really a need for another 2/3 sensor entry level in addition to the x30? Ideally, if Fuji does 2/3 sensor cam, there should be one.

    There should be 1 X-A/M type (no viewfinder) camera, though I would never ever buy a camera without a viewfinder. I understand some people would, and if there’s a market for it, why not? So an X-A2 makes some sense, but I’m not sure how a cheap X-T1 would fit in the current line-up.

    Personally, I think Fuji should do away with the 2/3 entry levels, make one good, smallish (it’s OK is a little bigger than X30) point and shoot with 1 inch sensor. So something like this:
    P & S – XQ/X30 -> 1 new 1 inch sensor compact.
    Entry level MILC -> XA2
    Mid range rangefinder -> X-E2
    High-end/Pro “mini-dslr” -> X-T1
    Flagship rangefinder -> X-Pro

    This would be a well differentiated, easy to market product line. X30 was just released (and imho its overpriced for what it does), X-A2 makes a little sense, starting to iterate high-end bodies would make more. Obviously, the X-Pro needs a refresh, but if Fuji’s waiting for some significant breakthrough, I guess the X-E2 (2013 October launch) refresh should be next. An April refresh (18 months after X-E2 launch) would make sense.

    1. Patric, anything if X-A2 will get EVF? Hope it will have same wonderful Bayer sensor, would be even more happy if it got 24MP 🙂

  13. Put to X-A2 same Bayer sensor but 24MP + EVF and I will buy 2 of them! X-A1 Bayer sensor renders best JPEGs up to 6400iso on all APS-C including X-T1 which brings owful magneta cast at high iso. Such X-A2 would kill Sony A6000 and probably expected new A7000.

    1. I’m happy that I’m not the only person here that likes the X-A1 since I own one.

      I would be very interested in a serious X-A2 too. EVF, 24MP, tilt-LCD and phase detection AF in a rangefinder body would be all I wan’t from Fuji. Ok lets add all film simulations, ISO6400+ and an electronic shutter too! 😉

      I noticed some artifacts in the images of the X-A1 lately. On hard edges like black lines on white paper you can see the pixels as if there is no AA filter or only a very low resolution. You would guess the image is oversharpened but you can see it even in pictures without any sharpening at all. It seems Fuji is cooking the bayer RAWs too.

    2. Since someone asked for a X-Pro2 Poll, I would like a X-A2 Poll. 😉

      -(same X-A1 16MP sensor)
      -sensible 12MP sensor
      -20MP
      -24MP
      -Rangefinder body
      -DSLR body
      -Tiltable screen
      -Touch Screen
      -EVF
      -PDAF
      -deeper grip
      -more function buttons
      -Wifi control
      -IBIS
      -electronic shutter
      -quiter shutter
      -ISO6400+
      -all film simulations

  14. I am a current X-M1 user. I am excited to hear X-A2 is coming. I enjoy having a MILC compact in size with built in flash. I would be happy to have a 24MP+ bayer sensor, but I will miss the quality with x-trans. I also like the “PASM” and full automatic mode, which is very good for casual photographers.

    I hope it will be weather resistant, optional EVF add on, and also a bigger grip. It would be a perfect camera for me.

    It is very important for Fuji to have an entry level MILC in the roadmap, to compete with m43 and other low cost MILC. These consumers will invest in lens and upgrade to other higher end MILCs in future.

  15. Actually I’ll probably get whichever new 24mp thing they make next that has a EVF, I have the M1 and miss having a VF of any sort. Having dipped my toe in the Fuji waters with this camera I want something better so I can buy the 90mm lens to put it on! I want that lens more than anything and maybe a drop in the T1 price would tempt me.

    OR….any camera…that has ALL the film modes bracketing offered.
