If you are going to Las Vegas for the CES, you will probably waste your time looking for the Fujifilm booth, since, according to dpr-moderator Chris (f-sunny, via dpreview) – who’s heading to Las Vegas soon -, there won’t be any Fujifilm booth at CES… just rooms for business meetings.
Chris assumes there won’t be “big announcement, because they have no booth to show it/them off. My guess would be Fuji will save their announcements for shows late in 2015, and have a Fuji booth at those locations.”
If Chris is right, then this means that Fujifilm has not that much in the pipeline for the next couple of months (the 16-55mmF2.8, the 16mmF1.4 and a rumored entry level X, which should be also the last one, according to actioncamerarumors).
The Fujifilm X-PRO2? Oh yes, this one is coming too, sooner or later in 2015 😉 .

My guess: no big announcements anytime soon (if ever)… and x-pro2 is really a fuji killer… there’s no technology to make it much better than x-t1 is, form factor is not enough. It’ll either have next-gen of current sensor or sony’s 24mp (which is geting old and top players will jump to new one at around the same time Fuji will get it…if so…)
There is a bunch of handsome cameras from fuji, but this was enough in the analog age.
24 megapixels on APS-C? Not sure that is such a good idea. I’d rather have a latest generation sensor with full frame quality in terms of low light sensitivity and dynamic range at 16 megapixels rather than those 20% more resolution.
As far as the topic of the article goes, I’m pretty sure they would be saving any major announcements for CP+. They are a Japanese company after all.
The fuji management team has stated over and over again as recently as last week there are no plans for FF.
They also stated no X-Pro2 until they see the sales results for the X100T and that there is a major advancement in the sensor tech while also stipulating that the organic sensor is a long ways off still.
That’s why I said full frame quality, not full frame. I think an APS-C sensor that focuses on improving image quality, not irrationally high resolution would make the most sense.
Also keep in mind that committing to one sensor and using it across many models for a relatively long time likely plays a significant part in making firmware updates for older models possible and keeping R&D costs down by allowing them to re-use technology across different models. We shouldn’t forget that Fujifilm is a surprisingly small player in the camera market. The fact that they are able to more than just compete with the rest is partly due to the fact that they spend their resources very wisely.
These days, full frame pretty much only make sense for ultra high resolution sensors like on the D810 or for the advanced amateur segment with people who want that wedding photographer look with ultra-shallow depth of field without spending money on large and fast lenses. The rest of the full frame market is pretty much just a scam by the camera companies, trying to get consumers to spend ridiculously high amounts of money on what are essentially entry-level cameras with a big sensor (such as the Nikon D610), consequently pushing up prices on all pro-level camera models into higher ranges to increase profitability. You used to be able to get a Nikon D300 for 1200€ and not have any significant limitations in terms of features or ergonomics. Nowadays the lowest sum that gets you a current Nikon body with pro ergonomics is 4000€ for a D810.
My guess is that in the long run full frame is going to disappear as APS-C sensors get better. All the high end applications are going to move up directly to medium format systems, where prices are already starting to drop, especially if stitched sensors like the one Arri is using become mainstream.
– 24mp on the Nikon D7100 definitely produces greater resolution and sharpness than the 16mp on the Fuji X cameras (e.g. downsampling is improved). There are plenty of reviews out there that attest to that. If Fuji can maintain the same DR and high ISO capability of the current generation sensor, while going to 24mp, that would be a significant advance.
– Agree on Fuji spending money more wisely up to this point, however.
– Full frame offers advantages beyond high resolution. It also enables superior high ISO performance (e.g. Nikon D3s/D4s/Df/ Sony A7s). Until we get some sort of quantum breakthrough in sensor technology, it will remain this way.
– Full frame is not going to go away. Medium format cameras are highly specialized, slow, large, and offer a radically different FOV. They are unsuited to reportage, travel, or action photography of any kind. It has always been this way — even in the days of film — and I see nothing that will change that.
But then again, why would they say anything else. They’ll tell you about the products they can sell you now, not about the products they can’t sell you now. It’s business
I bought an x-t1, a few days before Chritsmas and talking to the salesperson (the boss of the shop) who incidentally owns a x-pro1 he told me that he would not be surprised if the next body had a lower MP count, concentrating instead on really high IQ and very low noise. I would be very happy with that move, but I can hear the clamor from here if that was to happen.
Salespeople no nothing about manufacturer’s plans. Absolutely nothing. He’s talking out of his a**.
“Top players” – who are they? I have yet to see them. An A7r with a wobbly mount, shutter vibration issues, and compressed RAW files?
While my DP Merrills have exceptional image quality at lower ISO settings, my X-Pro 1 still has very good image quality.
I bet your photography is as uninspiring as your attitude. I hope you are getting paid for the dogshit you keep posting…
Expected CES is mainly for video…..bummer that the big announcement probably the x pro 2 is coming late i guess its within october-december 2015…..could be too late
????? You have not been to a CES. That is clear.
waiting for GR2 and RX2
RX2 could really be something if they improve the ergo. Fuji still leads there.
Isn’t there CP+ show in Japan in February? CES is a consumer show not photography show.
I’m going to follow this discussion for a few days and sniff around a little more for other opinions… but, if concensus is that there will be no new announcements in early 2015, I’m going to get my XT-1 on order to suppliment (supercede?) my current X-Pro1. I loved the X-Pro when it first came out and still do really, but the XT-1 has just too many good upgrades for me to ignore any longer.
I’m in the same field here. Really don’t want to jump to the X-T1, I love form and function of the X-Pro1, but it’s really starting to take too long for the X-Pro2 to arrive. As much as I still love it, it is at times starting to limit me (or at least it feels like it is ;).
I was more or less in the same boat – my x-e1 was getting a bit long in the tooth. I’ve got the X-T1 along with some nice glass and could not be happier! the x-e1 is a very good companion to the x-t1; I shall see what the x-t2 or x-e3 brings in (I discovered that with my eyesight and current glasses I can’t see in the X100T OVF let alone EVF)
As others have said it is CP+ we should be looking at not CES.
CP+ is more important.
If there is no X-Pro 2 announced then, I will be disappointed, especially considering the organic sensor is apparently a long way off – I doubt they are waiting for it. I bet they will announce it in February.
in the past, for Fuji, the CES was more important than CP+… X-PRO1 and X100S were announced at CES
Indeed, maybe that time (long forgotten S series aside) Fuji believed to market those cameras to wider audience. Now, some years later, they know their market for X series are prosumers.
Patrick, does your magic ball tell you anything about CP+?
Maybe the CP+ will be more important than the CES, but my magic ball, till now, still not really so excited about CP+.
I have been to 7 CES shows in my life. I have been on both sides of the show, presenting and attending. I have also been to close to 100 press junkets. Announcements are done in several ways and do not need a booth. Most are actually via press release followed by a closed door presentation to buyers, press, and other industry folks. That said I think CP+ will be the venue for an announcement. Seems Fuji just needs more time. AND CES is major expensive.
I suspect some major announcement at CP+ in Feb. No reason to assume from this that anything new won’t be until later in the year. Hoping for X-Pro 2, I disagree with some comments above – I don’t think major sensor advancements are needed, just the nice new ergonomic enhancements (e.g. ERF from the X100T) from newer cameras to justify an X-Pro 2 body at this stage.
The X-Pro needs a new processor. If nothing else, the lag must be fixed.
Totally pathetic. How long are we suppose to sit by and wait for an X-PRO1 replacement. his is beyond ridiculous at this point.
To be honest I would prefer groundbreaking (I’m pushing it a bit here) upgrade rather than incremental one.
IQ-wise X-Pro1 is up there with X-T1 and apart from more recent developments (EVF, AF, Wi-Fi, weather sealing) it still is, in terms of handling, quality of buttons, finder, design (in my opinion), X camera to get
In retrospect though, Fuji has a history of releasing small increments when it comes to the same model (X100/S/T, X-E1/2), so I suspect more like an X-Pro1S for this time, especially since they admitted issues with the organic sensor. This wouldn’t necessarily be bad news though, at least not for the HVF loving X-Pro1-only owners who still don’t have the (most important IMO) recent features you mention.
Lol!!
good to see this is all based on guesswork. fuji are at three locations at ces. theres a chance that fujifilm couldn’t get any expo floor space so they took 2 meeting rooms. i’m going to be at ces and will gladly send a pic of their presense.
According to FUJI’s roadmap the 16-55 f2.8 will be announced early 2015, the CP+ event in februari will be perfect for that.
Announcement of the PRO2 kit with 16-55f2.8 would be awsome. They can’t wait too long. Sales are eaten out by A7II, A9 etc.
If XP2 will have an HVF (and I hope it will!), there’s no way that any big zoom lens would be supplied with it as a kit.
PRO2 will !
“Here’s your new muscle car. Look at that gorgeous engine! It obscures 90% of driver’s view, but who cares? We have monitor on a dashboard and a front facing camera…”
No, they will say: “just toggle the EVF/OVF lever”.
But actually I think FUJI has developed an innovative high tech EVF , which X-T1 can dream of . No more OVF needed.
You like editing your comments so much that you should try some real blogging. You know, like gathering a ton of comments under your post, then suddenly changing its content to make all commenters look silly.
What you need to remember is that the CES, and most shows, are for dealers — NOT consumers. The last time I went to CES you had to get your ticket from a dealer, who give tickets to a few good customers. BTW my ticket came from a friend, who is in the Auto Sound business. Lots and lots of Auto Sound and in-car Television at CES, cameras not so much.
For the most part, the ‘net has replaced Consumers shows. Rumors sites, like this, DPReview, Steve Huff, etc reach more people than a show (and they do it in real time.
Canon and Tokina are two manufactures who don’t do all the shows, but they will be at WPPI (Wedding Show).
I’m gonna laugh if the PRO2 has the same X-Trans sensor.
I’m gonna cry -:)
You know it’s gonna happen. They’ll disregard the crap about not releasing a new one unless something great is in the works, and then they’ll try to convince that a new viewfinder IS the great thing in the works, and it’s cool to keep all other features/specs unchanged.
I would say two things to that. and this is /my/ opinion not wanting to start a flame war or anything
– going from XE-1 to X-T1 is a huge leap in terms of ergonomics, body handling, system capabilities, I am /personally/ not bothered at all by the fact that it is the same sensor.
– in a matter of a few years a small player like Fuji as invested a lot in building a comprehensive line of quality to high-quality lenses and if I had to chose between a new body with all the latest gizmos and a full lens lineup I know what my choice would be, provided we have at our disposal an array of bodies with a decent sensor and image quality, which I believe we already have.
Sure things could be better, more advanced etc … but what good would it do to most of us to have the latest and greatest in sensor technology and no glass ?
We know Fuji is not the largest manufacturer and they do not have unlimited funding; Choices had to be made. Yes the XPRO line probably needs a refresh, and it is now it’s turn. But I really wish Fuji does not go over the top in the Million Pixels race.
Isn’t the entry-level X camera the XQ1?
Isn’t it about time the whole “organic sensor” fairy tale is put to rest?
Not in any need for spectacular new cams since my X-M1 and X-T1 do fine. I only hope the 16-55mm F2.8 will be released before my bday in april 🙂
Who cares. I’d rather see xe3 as HVF is not the future. Look at the bulky zooms, yes I get it, Fuji wants to be pro, but no pro out there without a high end best image quality camera line, mostly at least FF + super good AF. Fuji has to make a huge leap to really deliver a true pro xpro than just a good looking rangefinder alike for fans, before that I am more curious to see A9, RX2, A7ii s, and what canikon can offer.
watch this, you might learn something about sensor size
http://dedpxl.com/crop-or-crap-math-or-moment/
Always imagine other people knows less than you?
Being using different formats for years, format is just something you choose according to your need. And the only thing I want from Fuji is more choices than just one 16MP APSC.
I do want to see a good Fuji APSC with one of the best image quality among the current gen sensors (no, please don’t compare to 5D2 any more, that sensor is years ago). But let’s face it, at this point, APSC does has less room for improvement because 16MP is already pretty high. It is not going to do high iso as good as a FF 12MP or do more than 24MP without sacrifice too much.
This makes it quite difficult to make a much better APSC. And could be one of the reason why X-Pro2 has been delayed for so long. And of course the reason why they want to develop the organic sensor.
So good luck X-Pro fans or APSC fans, just keep waiting.
And I will be happier to see a XE3 with a reasonable sensor update with an acceptable price + very good AF, or a XT1 mkii with IBIS + new prime lenses, or a fixed lens FF X100
And also I am looking forward to know about Sony FF, is there anything wrong with that?
Should I feel guilty for still love FF while using APSC/m43?
Wouldn’t you call Leicas pro cameras ? Pro doesn’t necessarily equal SLR or electronic viewfinder. You can have a pro camera system consisting of optical viewfinder/rangefinder and mostly short primes that don’t obstruct the view (admittedly, this hasn’t been Fuji’s main goal after the X-Pro1 was released but who knows ?)
I’d call Leica boutique cameras. They don’t tick the boxes for what I consider to be a pro system according to the common definition of the term.
APS vs ‘FF’ isn’t a really huge deal. If you want substantial image improvement, go for MF or LF exposure.
