Full FW 4.0 Feedback at the FXF

_ _ _

So the source was right (thanks). The countdown has to start again, the Fuji X-T1 FW 4.0 will come on June 29 – I guess at usual at around 5AM London Time – Midnight in NY (if there are no last second delays 😉 !)

Here are the features you will get:

(1) New AF system with Zone and Wide/Tracking modes for effortless capture of moving subjects
(2) Improvement of AF accuracy
(3) Eye Detection AF
(4) Auto Macro mode
(5) AF improvement in the Movie mode
(6) Improved Shutter Speed Dial operation
(7) Exposure Compensation control in Manual.
(8) Finer lines on the framing grid enhances visibility
(9) Name of Silent mode changed to avoid confusion

About Nr. 9: I made a proposal at the FXF, to rename “Sound & Flash OFF” to “Sound & FLash”. It just would be clearer, what do you think?

On June 29, you’ll be able to download here. Full details about new FW here.

Full Report with Feedback about the BETA version of the Firmware can be checked out in this FXF thread.

  1. Don’t see the problem with silent mode BUT if it’s going to change better be the second version with just ONE “off” or “on”.

    1. My Workflow: install plug-in / Alert – Conflict / System Crash / FR down / Call Sys-admin / Fix / Pay the Bill

I’ve been through it so many times, that I’m always scared to install new plug-ins now…. but… I’m tempted… should I try, should I risk?

Ok, If you install FW 4.0 Beta, I could install the plug-in 😉

      1. I’ve been married to BIOS developer for almost 10 years, I know exactly what happens to beta systems… And since that X-T1 puts bread on my table – thanks, but no thanks. I won’t be installing beta FW 🙂

As for your workflow… It’s missing 2 crucial parts:

        1. Backup (since you’re using Disqus, you won’t even lose any comments upon recovery);
        2. FTP or any other file system level access (CPanel file manager will do just fine). If any plugin gives you trouble, just delete /wp-content/plugins/nameoftheplugin, and you’re back in business in no time ))

        1. Unless you run a hightraffic website and the plugin works for years and years and you become dependant on it and suddenly the developers stop supporting the plugin. Or you endup with so many plugins it’s not exactly clear which plugin is the troublemaker. Or you get attacked because a plugin seems to have a vulnerability. These things happen on websites that draw attention 😉

          1. Agree ! My lab uses a Joomla based website with many plugins. We recently updated the version of Joomla and needed to update most of the plug-in. Painful, time-consuming and some old plug-in didn’t work at all with the new version.

          2. That’s exactly why I ditched Joomla as a CMS of choice… more than 10 years ago.

PS: No, I will not participate in Joomla vs Drupal vs WordPress holywar 🙂

        2. Installing a plug-in can disable others, like when the woocomerce plug-in disabled the “share rumors” box… and for a few weeks I wondered why nobody shares anything anymore via rumor box

There is often a plug-in interfering with another one, and you have to check everything, see if it all still works properly, sort out eventual problems.

But we are working on a new clean theme/code now. Don’t know when we will be able to launch it… Let me first sort out my burn out problem with a bit of holidays, and then I’ll be back at work on the theme.

The countdown? Maybe… I’ll probably decide after my Djembe session this evening.

          1. *facepalm* Patrick, just put a few strings of a freakin’ Javascript code into WP’s own Text widget.

(I hear ya, woocomerce does a lot of weird and stupid things, makes me wonder why people use this crap)

    2. I can’t imagine this site being able

A Problem occured with this webpage so it was reloaded.

      to handle another plugin.

  2. Sound & Flash OFF should really be called Discreet Mode. It describes exactly what it is and at the same time clarifies that it’s a MODE, and not designed to be a permanent setting.

Sounds can be changed and disabled independently, and so can the flash of course. This MODE is really only meant to be used temporarily in situations where you want to be discreet, ensuring that you didn’t accidentally skip one of the sounds or distractions, and be able to go back to the way all your settings were before, when -as somebody in the forum mentioned- leave the museum!

Since the AF assist light and things like that are probably turned off as well!

    It’s only logical.

    1. They could call it “Silent Mode”, which is what they called it on the X10. (Not X-T10; the original X10.)

      1. It is called silent mode, but they want to change it in FW4.0. Because people don’t understand why their flash isn’t working in silent mode.

  3. I have noticed one issue with the leaked firmware – if others want to try. The high speed shooting CH mode in AF-C Zone isn’t very quick. Even if I set the camera to “release” mode rather than “focus” it still seems to pause to get focus making the shots per second speed drop. Whereas CH AF-C Single Point remains very fast.

  4. The AF improvements are – of course – a major step forward. What about the wonky Wifi-implementation?

    1. I don’t have any issues with the Wifi implementation it has been solid and stable for me. What’s wrong with yours ?

      1. Let’s start the PC Auto Save feature… 1) it doesn’t support multi router multi PC environments and to reconfigure it each time again, you’ll get in an extremely cumbersome workflow. Why can’t it remember a few routers and PC’s, it would mean a world of difference! 2) on OS X it locks up all the time. Never been able to transfer more than about 25 RAWs at once. 3) It’s slower than slow. a few tens of RAWs wil cost you roughly one hour. And secondly my expertise with the Fuji App on iPhone & iPad isn’t brilliant either… it’s all a bit of the same story. Configured for one, it takes a lot misery to make it work for the other again. Reset after reset. Trial after trial. Often it takes five or more attempts to get it working, while in you have to hit the X-T1’s wifi button several times because at the right moment, the silly time out is already there. Really, I know what I’m doing, this is not the kind of functionality I had expected. I’m not even using it anymore because I hate the hassle to fix, reset, reconfigure,… over and over again and at the end, putting the SD card in the computer and copying the files takes a few seconds. But what a pity that this wireless control doesn’t work stable either.

        1. Ahh ok, I hear what you say. to be honest as a developper I know first hand that developping stable apps for IOS takes more than your average craftmansship; That’s not entirely Fuji’s fault, and Apple has the disgraceful habit of changing the rules with each release of IOS making it a bit of a nightmare. From IOS 8.2 to IOS 8.3 things that were perfectly valid stopped working all of a sudden, w/o even a warning. Some of my clients were not really impressed, neither was I 😉

I use Android and do not have issues with the app itself. and I only ever connect to my phone, to transfer images I bang the sdcard in a usb3 reader and it flies. More often than not, the card is already out of the camera anyway because it was full or near enough. But point taken, in your context the Wifi is a bit weak.

    1. Not really…
I am very satisfied with my X-Pro 1
That said, I am very interested to see what they do with the next generation of cameras (X-Pro 2/X-T2). I am hoping the next sensor will be significantly better in terms of dynamic range and resolution.

    2. It is mostly hype. So far the X-T1 hasn’t been that much of an improvement over the X-E1 (my first X- camera) as far as AF goes. A bit better in real life, but nothing revolutionary. I expect the same for the new firmware….

The only really useful feature addition I have ever seen in Fuji X was the minimal shutter speed which was a shameful omission in the first place.

      1. I own both and I disagree (with respect) the X-T1 is much better is every department. My x-e1 had not seen the light of day since the X-T1 arrived. This has now changed, as I offered the 27mm to my x-e1 and they now share the fun equally.

  5. After this, hopefully they start leaking some details regarding the X-Pro 2. I am getting a little impatient and tired of the hype regarding the A7rii, with its slightly better than jpeg image quality (11×7 bit lossy compressed files)~ just kidding Sony lovers…I know it will be great for your selfies and cat photos…

    1. I’m quite optimistic, but definitely don’t expect a milestone for mirrorless in general. Fuji is trying to catch up with other brands, so it will be a milestone for Fuji at best.
