Some stores like for example Camerastore Australia marked the X PRO 1 as “discontinued“. Just to make it clear, that’s no proof at all that an X PRO 2 is on the horizon. Stores sometimes discontinue products for different specific reasons. But n X PRO 2 is due for a 2013 release and it’s time to talk about how the X PRO 2 should be to make it a nice camera!

Why do you think an X-Pro2 is due for 2013? In the past the product lifecycles of the Fuji cameras were not that short..
Fuji have already demonstrated that they have all the hardware needed to fix the major XP1 and XE1 quirks.
The enthusiast market knows this, and many of us are waiting for the PDAF/EVF/Processor upgrades before we invest. Fuji would do well to release an XP1s and XE1s.
Yes, I totally agree. I know I am waiting for the update. It is not like Fuji needs to introduce a new camera, it is merely an update in hardware and software, which they can do immediately. Lets just hope they do so soon and they include the minimum shutter speed settings in auto ISO…
For there next product line, I think they should introduce and APS-H sized sensor in an interchangeable lens camera (20 x 30), if the current lenses would cover that, as it will satisfy most people’s desire for a larger sensor in a mirrorless camera while still making use of their current lenses. It would still be smaller than full frame, but not by much. And, they could keep it the same size as the X-Pro 1 and X-E1, or at least close.
FNAC the French retail chain that also has about 8 or 9 stores in Italy, discounted all their stock of XP1 bodies about 2 weeks ago, and sold them all off for just over 700 euros each, saying it’s no longer in production. They have told me that in the next few weeks they will start doing the same for the X-E1. They’ve offered them to me, but I politely declined their kind offer…. great prices though.
The stores are also getting pissed off because Fuji are bringing out replacement models too fast, and the shops are being left with worthless stock, as they have to meet minimum order quantities. Some shops are now considering dropping the Fuji brand, for that reason.

Making X100S so XP1’s and XE1 are not on the line. The new Sensor in the X100s dictates out with the old. I doubt Fuji planed it this way but came about to stay alive! With the loss of the PnS market they jumped to soon making the XP1?
Strange policy decision as FNAC (the same one) has the camera for sale at the normal price and with no indication of a possible discontinuity.
I saw it yesterday, but you can find it also online:
http://www.fnac.pt/Fuji-X-PRO1-Corpo-Camara-Fotografica-Digital-Camara-Reflex-Digital/a564832?PID=21280&Mn=-1&Ra=-5000&To=0&Nu=1&Fr=2
And FNAC FR still shows it online as in stock (besides with the indication of a seller):
http://www.fnac.com/mp18859513/Fujifilm-X-Pro1-appareil-photo-numerique/w-4
I think there is no doubt that it urges Fujifilm updates the camera, given the new viewfinder and focusing systems used for the X100s it will a matter of time (same for the X-E1) and they can do it announcing a “new” model or even more quietly just adding an “S” to the existing name.
Hi Antonio, not sure which FNAC you’re at, but Verona definitely offloaded theirs 2 weeks ago, and orders came from head office. I think if you go into your local FNAC and quietly ask them about the deal, they will be happy to oblige. You can tell them that Verona branch offloaded theirs at just over €700 body only. Which is your local branch?

Hi Paul,
As I said local FNAC still has the camera at the shops and online at the normal price and I doubt they would follow the offload price you indicate.
I suppose they don’t have a global price policy for the group and I’m waiting they introduce the recent X100s changes to the other two models of the system.
Tks anyway
Hi Antonio, you don’t say which country you are in, and FNAC is spread across several countries, each country having its own ownership. The Italian shops are selling off these items CHEAP. If you are in France or any of the other countries where FNAC exists, then your local policy may also change very soon.
aps H would be perfect for me, it’s the only thing i miss from my 1dmk111,focus peaking would be nice for legacy glass.
Can’t believe there are people who think the xpro update will come in 2014. It’s very difficult to buy an xp1 these days (if you can wait) when the new tech packed into the x100s is just around the corner. And these are substantial improvements. Fuji know this.
Anyway hope this turns out true. That Japanese mag indicated April for the xp2. I personally reckon it would be a xp1s.
The X-E1 is now struggling to sell because of two reasons, the viewfinder is crap, whatever people say, and people want the new processor, the new sensor, and the new viewfinder that are all in the new X100. The X-E1 has been completely left behind by the new tech in the X100. Remember, it’s not just the AF speed…. it’s a new second generation sensor, a new viewfinder with split image, and a second generation processor, too.
I think we will see the XP1 and the XE1 replaced fairly shortly, and they will leapfrog the new tech in the X100, with even newer and better features.
http://www.streetphotographix.com
LOL gotta love these comments “the viewfinder is crap, whatever people say”
Translation: don’t believe all the professional reviews and whatever people are saying about the viewfinder… Paul knows the truth… its crap
Cazman, you tried it? My guess is that the new second generation processor now being used in the X100s will make it very usable, but right now it jerks as you pan, and there is still a well-discussed delay when you half-press the shutter button. The reviews all state this, the forums all state this, and general public recommendations by the professional reviewers generally state the camera is not ideally suited to fast action photography, including street, journalism, sports etc.
That may all change with the second, or who knows, even a third generation processor that will allow the refresh time of the EVF to be in real time, and then it will be very good. Right now, for sports, action, street, fast moving kids, it’s crap compared to others on the market.
http://www.streetphotographix.com
ok my main reason for laughing out loud at you is your claim “the viewfinder is crap, whatever people say” as if your opinion on this is more valid than “whatever people say”
you are entitled to your opinion, and you think its crap, that’s fine, but to make out like other opinions don’t matter and that yours overrules it is worthy of being laughed at.
Now to answer your question, yes I own a X-E1, and I personally have no issue with the EVF, I actually quite like it a lot and find it very usable.
Let’s see what the professional reviews have to say about it
dpreview.com – “As impressive as the Hybrid Viewfinder is on the other cameras in the X-series, the X-E1’s electronic viewfinder is excellent.”
photographyblog.com – “The Fujifilm X-E1’s EVF is one of the best that you’ll find on any compact system camera to date, and is so good that we hardly missed the X-Pro1’s admittedly superb Hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder.”
trustedreviews.com – “Excellent electronic viewfinder” in the pros list
Your issue with the viewfinder seems to be be that its not suitable for Sport photography and similar fast action photography, but everyone knows you don’t get a X system for sport, there are far better systems suitable… that doesn’t make the viewfinder crap…
that really is an absurd claim based on a misunderstanding of what the system is made for
Cazman…. I thought all the serious scholarly types confined themselves to a certain forum…. they must have let you out for the day.
Go look at my website. Bear in mind those are only photos with my amateur hat on, and that I’ve been making a lot of money from my journalsim photos for over 40 years. You are entitled to your beliefs in what the magazines say, and I am entitled to my belief in what hard experience in the field has proven.
But please let’s keep this purely to the discussion of improvements on the X-Pro 1. I respect your thoughts, and I will not criticise them, and I expect you to do the same for me.
http://www.streetphotographix.com
Paul, let me apologies for being the scholarly type, your right its not cool, sorry about that.
My problem is with they way your dismissing what the magazines say, they are still photographers that work for these magazines, not only that but they get to play with a heck of a lot more cameras than me or you, its their job, so I think when these people who review camera after camera say the EVF on the X-E1 is excellent, I’m more inclined to take their opinion more seriously than a comment on a rumor site saying the opposite.
I was hoping you could see that’s what I was getting at and perhaps rethink your claim that the EVF is crap.
But hey you are entitled to your opinion, that’s fine.
My opinion that the EVF is excellent is not just based on the magazines but by my experience with it.
If we want to talk about making the X-E1 better, I would just like to see the AF improved, but for what I do (street photography, weddings, landscapes) the AF does ok.
Sorry if I offended you.
Hi Cazman, No worry, that’s what forums are for… lots of misunderstandings 🙂
Magazines articles are not written by professional photographers, they are written by journalists whose hobby is photography, and they are generally encouraged to write well for companies that advertise heavily with their publication. This is a business fact. If Fuji, for example, have a massive advertising with a photography magazine, that magazine is unlikely to upset Fuji by being to honest about the shortcomings of its products.
I have tried the XE1 side by side with the new X100s set to EVF, and the improvement in the X100s is extremely apparent. Much faster, livelier, much less jerking. The XE1 has massive room for improvement in its EVF, but is an amazingly great camera otherwise. Once the XE1s comes out, with the upgraded viewfinder, second, or maybe even third generation processor, split screen focussing, second or third generation sensor, then that will be a camera that will be hard to criticise. In the mean time, compared to other EVFs on the market, including Fuji’s own X100s EVF, the X-E1 EVF has issues. If we say, for example, that the XE1 isn’t best suited to: fast moving kids, sports, journalism, wild animals and somewhat slow for street photography, then all that’s left is still life and maybe portraits. With the X100s EVF the XE1 would be unbeatable.
I tend not to listen too much to magazine articles. I am fortunate enough that if I am interested in a new model I buy it and try it. If I don’t like it I sell it or give it to my kids to play with, but if I criticise or praise a camera it is because I have either owned it or tried it thoroughly under demanding conditions, and obviously my thoughts are purely my opinion, but based on serious use. Magazine articles are by journalists, and sometimes (but not always) they can overlook things. One reviewer I tend to trust, because he really doesn’t care if he upsets people, is Kai from DigitalRev 😀
However, looking at ebay.co.uk just now, I see I can now get XE1 and XP1 bodies for under GBP 600 from a growing number of shops. Some of those shops are saying they are clearing stock ready for the new models, and given the massive drop in prices I think they must know what they are doing.
However, no offence taken, this is an interesting thread, which gets repeated whenever massive price drops occur for any particular model, and which events are always followed by a “leaked” announcement of a new model 😀 Fuji San has excellent marketing skills.
http://www.streetphotographix.com
the X-Pro2/1s can’t come soon enough. However, unless they add more to it, it will be less of a upgrade than the X100S is to the X100.
The new manual focusing will be killer for 3rd party lenses, no doubt about that.
EVF will be faster/same as X-E1/X100S
AF will be upgraded to new hybrid X100S system
Maybe a little faster processor
I don’t want/need higher MP but I guess a new/different sensor is possible other than the X100S EXR II
yep, a sensor/processor bump into the existing body. Move a few buttons. And ramp the price back up again 🙂 If they fix the Exposure Comp dial … even a skeptic like me could be interested. But not unless there is minimum shutter speed under auto iso!
Perhaps in 2014 they will have a real update; for instance weather proofing or other things that will make the camera more ergonomic or practical.
A weather proofed body for a system of non-weatherproofed lenses?
I somehow doubt it.
Leica M 240 might be a good example 😉
Body first, lens to follow. Some new weather proof lens would be nice too. Fuji needs something to do after they finish with the current lens roadmap … right?
This is very interesting information !!! I’m waiting for this news, X Pro2/Pro1s, expecially for AF speed in low light condition and a new second generation sensor.
Thanks Paul for the information that you have write 🙂
Fuji burning itself. I bought the Fuji X PRO 1 and within months it is already deemed a burn out. Fuji changing their socks far to fast. The X PRO 1 is a fabulous camera in itself despite the expert opinions and obvious small annoyances but Fuji gives nothing but consumer fear if you buy something from them it will lose acceptance in a couple of months as they move on. Cameras are too expensive to play games with. I won’t be buying anything from Fuji again.
If you have the X-Pro 1, why can’t you just use it and replace it with an X-Pro 3/5 (they tend to skip the 4). This is what I intend to do. The camera is good as it is, so why upgrade? In the future we will have the lenses and we only swap bodies when we feel like it is worth it in the heart and financially.

Loran…..I don’t understand comments like yours. In case you haven’t figured it out….buying a digital camera is like buying a computer…it’s replacement is in the works even before you take the first photo. You obviously bought your XP1 knowing what the issues were and were happy to buy it…no one forced you. Use your camera and be happy.
By the way…I bought my XP1 a year ago…it’s been out a lot longer than ‘a few months’.
That’s all fine and dandy for a 600€ computer or camera, but for a setup that cost 1600€ body only … well lets see … Leica starts to look like better value. And do I want to buy more Fuji glass, for all we know they will ditch the lens system too in a year or so.
Real Pro cameras go 3-4 years between updates. Fuji has itself in an interesting position, lots of cameras doing almost the same thing.
At least they are predictable, waiting till the end of the product cycle yields extraordinary savings on extraordinary cameras.
Don’t feed the troll, folks.
How about a computer that costs 1600€? The higher the price, the faster the devaluation (and yes, that does apply to Leica digital cameras, too).
I still like the pictures I took with my Nikon D70 8 years ago. And I really like the XP 1 – I might even buy one when you all dump yours on ebay because you absolutely have to buy the XP 2 🙂
+1, Till. With a little patience one can acquire the next-to-latest photographic toy, which will in the right hands still yield magnificent results. Funny how the idea of an impending successor frightens off so many here…
Who cares! Where are the new lenses!
Amen!!!

Here my wishlist for the X-Pro2:
* state of the art AF
* longer battery life
* changed access to battery and memory card
* price only slightly above current X-Pro1 🙂
Thanks.
Hm, interesting. I’ve added an X100s to my shopping cart several times, but the thing that keeps holding me back is not having a telephoto.
I just got an X-E1 + 35mm with the $300 rebate and I figure I can upgrade when something substantially new comes out at a reduced loss when I sell my old camera.
Does anyone know where we can officially submit feature requests to Fuji?
Here are 2 features I am guessing many people don’t know they want but could set Fuji apart:
Film Simulation for PRO 400H. If they could get it right regarding how the film reacts to overexposure, I believe this will bring many film-only customers looking for a small digital cam.
6×4.5 Crop Factor. Again many film photographers are using the Contax 645 with either Fuji PRO 400H or Kodak Portra 400. I believe this market is untapped by digital.
Anyways, my 2 cents.
or you can buy used film camera and use those films 😉 btw, just bought a roll of Fuji Pro 400H – they didn’t have Portra 400 🙂
The upgrades should be fantastic and are a welcome change. I can’t believe people complain about progression and how every camera must stick with a certain life cycle. Both the X-Pro 1 and the X-E1 need an update with the new features in the X100s, as the features are better and resolve some of the issues that were holding Fuji back. The new features should make the X-series cameras the top of the line in the mirrorless market anew Fuji should profit greatly from doing so. The only thing that would make this news more exciting would be to equip them with APPS-H sized sensor. If the lenses could cover about a 20 x 30 sensor size, they should do that instead of developing a full fame camera right now, as it would be close enough, they could use the same lenses (assuming they cover that size of sensor), and they can keep the size of the camera and lenses small. Until then, I would be more than happy to have an x-pros/x-E1s. So, hopefully this rumour comes true and very soon, as many people like myself are waiting impatiently…
I would love an APS-H senzor for my fuji x-pro1s, presumably the lenses cover the APS-H format.
I don’t think they will do so for the X-Pro 1s, but it would be a smart move for the X-Pro 2, as they could perhaps do so instead of a full frame model, satisfying the desires of most and avoiding the hassle and cost of designing all new lenses. This, of course, is assuming that the current lenses could cover a sensor size of about 20 x 30.
I would be more excited about this than a full frame version, as they could keep the size the same, and the price reasonable. It would definitely be a big seller; and, I believe it would be better than anything Sony will come up with, as they do not know how to design small enough quality lenses.
In my opinion, the X-E1s/X-Pro 1s will render the M4/3 cameras pointless, as there sensor size is too small and the X-Series cameras will no longer be inferior with respect to performance. If Fuji introduces an APS-H sized sensor interchangeable lens X-Series camera, I believe it would be the best mirrorless camera and would be a true replacement for most DSLRs…If I was working for Fuji, and it was up to me, I would introduce that instead of the full frame version for now ~ an APS-H sized sensor would be close enough!
Dang, seems like just yesterday I bought my xpro1 (it was in January).
Still, I’ll buy a xpro2/1s if it has more accurate and better (faster) AF. The xpro1 is great for static objects but hit and miss for moving objects (especially my 2yo… yeh I know it’s not a sports camera).
kuishinbou, the upgrades are wonderful for the consumer, but a nightmare for the shops, who get left with what fast becomes unsellable old technology.
http://www.streetphotographix.com
Paul…camera shops need to learn to treat cameras the way electronic shops treat computers…..plan on a yearly cycle. Sad…but true.
Hi CHD, I think, in fairness, they do that… but Fuji is killing that annual cycle by leapfrogging 3 or 4 different models, so there’s something new, on average, 3 or 4 times a year. I guess any shop would struggle to cope with that sort of product launch frequency. As I said, great for the consumer, but not so easy for the shops.
By the way, I have 3 Fuji X lenses for sale, 18, 35 and 60, with original boxes, and a flash & handgrip for the XP1 if anybody wants them…. don’t use them any more, so would accept very low prices. Contact me through my website. Hope I haven’t broken the forum rules by mentioning them 🙂 If so, then please will Mr Moderator edit this last paragraph 🙂
http://www.streetphotographix.com
What are you talking about Paul? Leapfrogging 3 or 4 different models?
The x100 was announced in 2010 and released in 2011, a 2-3 year cycle for its upgrade. The X10, their entry level X, had a full year long cycle as well (expected for entry level) The X-Pro1 and XE-1 are brand new models, *of course* they are new, and a 1-1.5 year semi-upgrade is not unheard of in the camera world, especially if its only upgraded internals.
You sound like a troll who is disconnected from reality.
Edgar, sorry you don’t understand it, but quite simply, to help you understand, with several models, each being updated at fairly long-term intervals, and there are currently 5 Fujis subject to these upgrades, it means at least one, and possibly more, upgrades of one model or another each year. Each of those upgrades brings new technology, that people then think may be included in a new upgrade for the model they currently have. It’s clever marketing, and the fact we are discussing what the replacement for the XP1 might have means the strategy works from Fuji’s point of view. Sorry you had difficulty understanding the principle, hopefully I explained it better this time 🙂
http://www.streetphotographix.com
Edgar, I am sorry you don’t understand the principle of leapfrogging. Let me explain more simply for you. Fuji currently have 4 or 5 principal models, each with an 12 – 24 month upgrade cycle, which means that between all the main models there are, on average, several Fuji upgrades each year… doesn’t matter which model the upgrade is for, the fact is that they cleverly introduce new technology with each upgrade, which causes people with the other models to start wondering when that new tech might be applied to the model of their choice… and it works because this forum is full of people discussing this very subject 🙂 So, very clever marketing by Fuji, and sometimes very bewildering for the consumer, who continually sees new technology appearing and perhaps hoping it will come to the model that works best for him or her, and so, between all the models, each upgrading at different times, each leapfrogging the other, is how Mr Fuji keeps our interest, and keeps us discussing the new tech, and what we’d like on our model, in forums like this. You are here, so it means it works for you too 🙂 I hope I’ve explained it better this time, and that you manage to understand it better 🙂
http://www.streetphotographix.com
Sorry, two replies, 45 minutes apart, because the first reply never appeared…. so I thought it failed. This has happened a few times lately. Please ignore the one you like least 🙂
http://www.streetphotographix.com
I think an X Pro 1S release in the near term is a no brainer. In many ways the 100S is ahead of the more expensive X Pro1 and XE1 at this point. An S upgrade across the line would get everything in sync again.
I’ve been eyeing the X100S but keep asking myself if 35mm is adequate since I like to do sunsets and think a longer focal length would be better for getting the framing I want (what my eye is seeing). I stopped to get a sunset a couple of days ago but the camera on my iPhone 4 (the only thing I had with me) was just too wide to get the clouds that were nestled up to the hills. An official teleconverter to get to 50mm would be great and would probably be all that I need. But it sounds like Fuji has no plans for something like that.
An X Pro 1S would give me flexibility, but I would sacrifice the silence and high sync speed of the leaf shutter. I hear that X100 has a great fill flash which is something I find very useful when shooting my daughter outdoors.
I think this is the right thing for Fuji to do. As great as they were, the X100, XPro1 and even the X-E1 had some major issues that needed to be addressed, the main one being AF speed and accuracy(especially in low light). Since Fuji seems to have addressed these issues with the X100s, I imagine that they will update the other two cameras soon.
With the AF and other quirks fixed, I think that Fuji can easily go with a two or three year product cycle now.
not selling x-pro1 yet. the next step for me will be FF mirrorless, doesn’t matter if it’s sony or fuji – i don’t care. i’m in the process of re-shuffling my camera bag and i think that my go-to combo will be X100 (might swap it for X100S) and M6. X-Pro1 will be probably used as a scanning machine 🙂
I totally agree, as I haven’t and will not buy the x-E1 or X-pro 1 because of hose issues and because I know Fuji has resolved those issues in the x100s. It would be very smart to update those cameras immediately, as it would make th m the best choice in the mirrorless market and will thereby increase heir market share considerably. To satisfy the people that want the X-Pro 2 to be full frame, I suggest they make it close to full fame (perhaps 20 x 30 or so) to the extent that the current lenses can cover, as they will not cover full frame. If they were to do so, it will be a win-win, as it will nearly achieve the benefits of full frame, they can use the current lenses, and the cameras and lenses will remain small – that, I am sure, would be a fantastic compromise, which will be better then any other mirrorless system. But, for now, I will be satisfied with an upgrade to the X-E1/x-pro 1 – hopefully before summer, as I am waiting impatiently…
If they came out with a xe1s I wouldn’t be made at all, I would just buy it and use the xe1 as my backup. It would be nice to get a rebate or something for existing users, I can’t wait to see what fuji does next!
I’ve taken some fabulous shots in the past four months I never would have made had I not bought an XE last December. What price can you put on that? If a Pro S is announced in April, to be honest, it wouldn’t be a tough decision for me to pass on it assuming it is essentially an interchangeable lens version of the X100S. With the X100s the IQ improvements are quite dramatic over the original, but if we’re simply talking about improved AF and focus peaking applied to the XE and Pro, its merely evolutionary changes. Assuming that is the extent of the improvements, if you could get a Pro for $1000 versus a Pro S for $1700, were I new to the market, I’d buy the original and put the savings toward an extra lens.
The retailer mentioned in the article is a nothing player in the Australian market. I have never even heard of them prior to today.
Quoting this company in this context would be like saying because the corner hamburger store closed down McDonals are about to go broke.
They are a chain store in south Australia and trade as Diamonds which have shops in most of the major westfield shopping centres and they also trade as photographic wholesalers which is the major pro photography store in Adelaide. Their online only store is camerastore. In Australia there is no major dominant chain of camerastores or equivalent of b&h which dominates nationally. Teds comes close but is a small presence outside of Melbourne and is not in all states. The prostore photographic wholesalers has the same message. Note it says “body only ” is discontinued which may mean a kit is coming or an xpro1s is on the way.
I really hope that Fuji releases the update to the XPRO1 and/or XE1 soon…many people are waiting for it.
It would be a wise decision for Fuji to release these quickly: many are sitting on the sidelines waiting for the AF and other updates we see in the X100s. If you read the reviews, the one major complaint that was holding many back was the slow AF and now Fuji has the fix.
Once Fuji releases XP1/and/or/XE1 with the improvements these models and their lenses will sell very well. Remember also that spring/summer is approaching and that is a time when many people buy cameras for their vacation.
Perfect timing for Fuji.
I would be disappointed if Fuji do not release an upgraded XP1 body this year. The lens road map shows new lenses due during 2013 and it would make sense for them to release an updated body at the same time. I hope they price it sensibly. In the UK we have a Fuji Platinum Club (I think its platinum),forgive me, and I think members will be offered the new camera at a discounted price similar to the £50 off voucher offered for the 14mm. I love the XP1 and my Nikon D700 is never used. Fuji will get it right. Olympus are due to release a new OMD and it is a very competitive market. With all the flim flam about Fuji’s XP1 faults I feel Fuji are forced to release an update rather than wait and lose out to Olympus. Because Fuji release a camera does not mean you have to buy it! I am just waiting for the telephoto lens – hurry up Fuji!! The XP2 or whatever it is called will be a significant improvement. As for camera dealers moaning – They make a good mark up and I am sure Fuji is just a small part of their business. Perhaps if they focused on customer service they may just shift a few more cameras……
Unless I accidentally trash my XPro1 or it gets stolen or something, I’ll be waiting for the XPro3 thanks.
GAS for lenses, yes. The body is already more than good enough.
Dr.
They DO need to focus better on video.
Look at all the attention the Canon 6d and Nikon D600 is getting for this. Lots of people interested by which one is better for video.
I agree it’s not the primal focus, but the mechanics seems to already be largely in places, with a few tweaks and better software Fuji could be stunning for video.
Perhaps I am one of the minority who does not care about video. I just want Fuji to make a mirrorless camera that can truly replace my DSLR for photos…And, I think they will do so with the X-E1s or X-Pro 1s. I am very excited about their potential and innovation, but I hope they introduce those updates soon, so I can buy a new camera…
You’re not the only one, the number of people who regularly use video on a dSLR are probably in the minority, though certainly not a trivial number.
It’s a highly valued feature for some, and not something that would come at the expense of regular photography :o)
You’re not the only one, actually all people I know who own Fuji got them because there’s no video related crap in the way. They’ve bought their cameras as tools for photography and that’s where Fuji’s X cameras excel.
I never really understood that need for video features in still cameras – from ergonomic point of view the form factor is just wrong, ask anybody who actually does video professionally. There’s a GAS but in the end they all return to dedicated video cameras or remedy usability issues with customised video rigs 🙂
Well “all the people you know who own Fuji” is not exactly a good sample. Obviously it’s small, and they’ve already bought a camera knowing it has dire video.
Point is, there IS a non-trivial market for people who regularly use or want the option for video.
Buying an expensive kit is made more economical knowing it can also serve for video.
Jason, lack of forefront video features on X-Pro1 was the main reason why I chose it over NEX7 (I guess I don’t need to explain my frustration of hitting record button every time). I chose Fuji because it’s focused on still photography.
Buying a camera because it doesn’t have video is stupid.
It’s a benign feature if you don’t use it. But massively valuable if you do.
If the video button is in a bad place, where it gets bumped, fair enough. But there is nothing to say that mistake would be made here.
On my X100 and my X-Pro 1 I simply superglued all the buttons I didn’t need, and tended to press by accident. Notably on the X Pro 1 I permanently glued the AFL/AEL and Q buttons, because for me they were badly placed and every time I went to take a shot I realised I’d upset my settings and I lost the shot. At the same time I permanently glued covers over the LED at the back, and the AF Assist Lamp at the front, which, although you can disable, tends to re-enable itself with each firmware update.
Superglue is great stuff 🙂 Now I have cameras that do what I need them to do, and the features I don’t need don’t work any more, even by accident 🙂
A camera is simply a tool to do a job, and sometimes a little adaptation can make it far more suitable to individual needs.

Can’t actually reply to the below. But supergluing is obviously an extreme measure for an expensive camera. The ergonomics are not that bad for the majority of users.
Hi Lara, yes superglue may appear extreme, but as I said, a camera is simply a tool to do a job. My cameras tend to have a very short lifespan, max one year… for me they are simply tools to do a job. I don’t worry about the residual value… my camera bodies have no residual value after one year, I just worry about getting the shots I need under any conditions, so I modify my equipment in any way that works to achieve that. I only shoot B&W JPG. I use manual ISO, manual aperture, manual focus, manual shutter. The only thing I bought the Fuji cameras for is the sensor and the quietness of use… all non-essential buttons are permanently disabled, and for me it works… go and have a look at some of my photos, and remember I don’t crop, don’t level, don’t do any PP work at all, the photos are exactly as they came out the camera… so superglue does work 😀 However, I understand that I am the exception to the general rule that you should treat your cameras nicely 😀 😀 An old saying comes to mind… it’s a bit cheeky, but works well here: “men who put their women on pedestals rarely knock them off”. In this case, people who keep their cameras perfectly, always in a case, with the lens cap on, beautifully clean and even personalised with soft buttons, nice straps, half cases etc… rarely actually use them 😀 I know that is a rather controversial generalisation, but I think there may be some truth in it.

I am one of those people waiting on the sidelines. What I want is the pro with at least the performance of the x100s. I was about ready to buy the XE1 then the x100s came out and showed where Fuji is headed. Now I’m waiting Because I need to change lenses. I need a wider angle and I need a really good Portrait lens and the 100s just wont work for me with the fixed lens. So as it is my ancient Nikon D2x will just have to do for just a little longer.
one more thing (don’t mean to sound like S. Jobs) – if you happen to be subscribers to Photograph quarterly magazine, the most recent issue (2nd) has nice article about X-Pro1 and a story about a professional photographer who is using it now for professional work, also spent some time in the Artic Circle and instead of his trusty D3S he used X-Pro1 and 3 X lenses. X-Pro1 does not need a replacement yet, all the new features brought by X100S are nice, but X100S is older camera than X-Pro1 and probably needed update to stay competitive with the new crop of APS-C based small cameras.
Hexx, don’t tell anyone, but I’m also using the XP1 for the demonstrations and occasional riots here in Italy, as well as for other paid work… but I use it with a Voightlander 35 MF lens, which effectively takes away the lag caused by slow AF and waiting for the aperture to close down. In this format it’s pretty unbeatable…. old schoolers can MF in most situations much faster than AF can work, and it means when you press the button you get instant exposure – the decisive moment, instead of press and pray caused by AF delay and aperture closing, which is currently so slow on the XP1. Also, the XP1 AF is still not reliable enough for fast action… too many shots lost, but the Voightlander is optically at least as good as the Fuji 35, and gives the option of hyperfocal focussing. There’s more than one XP1 being used professionally out there.
Forgot to add, even though I don’t use AF, a faster processor and better sensor and split screen focussing, and a better EVF would be VERY welcome, and worth upgrading for for many users

For that very same reason I decided to get used Leica M6, I have Voigtlander Nokton 50 f/1.5 with it. I too am getting better and better with MF and also it’s somehow more satisfying 🙂
Which 35 Voigtlander do you have – asking because I’m thinking about getting either Summicron or Voight for 35mm and there are 2 Voights Nokton as far as I know, F/1.2 and F/1.4.
And before yesterday I was lucky and found Voight 15mm f/4.5 with viewfinder in mint condition for very little money, couldn’t resist. The best thing is that I can use all these lenses on X-Pro1 :), and yes, focus peaking would help a lot, I don’t think that split image would be doable via FW update.
Voigtlander 35mm f2.5 VM Colour Skopar II
I tried the various Voight 35 lenses, and this is by far the best optically, no barrel distortion, and is optically at least as good as the Fuji 35, and for the work I do I never go below f4.5, normally working around 8 or 11. It’s also beautifully compact. One tip is if you use the XP1 body, use the Fuji adapter, because the others, when I tried them, caused various issues including inaccurate focussing compared to the distance scale, especially near infinity. The Fuji adapter doesn’t cause any issues.

thank you very much, I will have a look at Fuji’s M adapter because I don’t have one yet, I bought Voights and M6 during last 2 weeks and need to buy M adapter and also Nikon F adapter (planning to buy 60mm f2/8 Micro lens for ‘scanning’ negatives)

Check the date then calm down.
Is the X-Pro1 so bad that everyone already want to upgrade to a camera that isn’t even anounced…???
I want(ed?) to buy one, but all your reactions makes me holding back…
nope, it isn’t. X-Pro1 is brilliant camera 😉
Do any of you actually read the rumors page on this site?
It was announced days ago that a Japanese magazine is reporting the new X-Pro2 with a new viewfinder will be released in June 🙂
ET
Yes EvilTed, we do read them, but if you look carefully, the same person who started this thread also started that one 🙂 That’s the fun of this site, nobody takes anything too seriously 😀
LOL, I didn’t notice that 🙂
How about a real wishlist / open letter for the XPRO 1s / 2?
– new sensor
– new processor
– update of the viewfinder
– better af
– fixed iso seeting
– built in flash
– shutter release for time lapse
– fujinon 56 / 1.4 😉
@flysurfer: I think you have the best FUJI connection 😉 what do you think
@Orandajin
The XPRO 1 is a great camera but I wouldn’t buy one today, I would just wait a few weeks whatever there happens.
I just recently ordered an X-E1 with the kit zoom and 35 mm lens. UPS is supposed to get it to my doorstep by end of day tomorrow. Having seeing this post though, I almost felt obliged to do some research to make sure I’m not shooting myself in the foot by buying a brand new obsolete product. After doing some research here’s the insight that I’ve came to….
The first X camera, the X100, was released back in March 2011. The X100s was then released this month, exactly 2 years from the first iteration. As you may recall, the X100 was first rumored to be discontinued when crutchfield.com first tagged it as so on their website. This was 8 months ago.
The X-Pro1 was then released January 2012. It’s now running on its 15th month… and if history repeats itself of approximately releasing a new iteration 8 months from its rumored discontinuity, then chances are we will see the X-Pro1s (or X-Pro2) by December 2013 or January 2014. Pretty close to the 2-year cycle of the X100 eh?
Now the X-E1… This model was released in the market back in November 2012. It’s now only about 5 months old. Basing on an educated guess from what was previously mentioned, it still has about a year and a half left on its life before the replacement model will come out. It also does not seem to make good business sense from a manufacturer’s perspective to kill a product that has only been in the market this new. They still need to make sales out of this model to cover for all the manufacturing, R&D, marketing, and all other costs that they’ve spent on this product before they can even start spending again on a replacement.
So having said all that (and I know that’s a lot… sorry). It only shows that Fuji’s business model does seemingly fall on the 2-year cycle principle. Given that my X-E1 arrives tomorrow, I feel a little assured that I’d still have some good amount of time left to enjoy it until the “s” or “2” model comes in the market. Now this is only my opinion based on the information I have gathered. Everyone is entitled to have their own, but I thought I should just share for those who are pretty much in the same situation as I am.
P.S. I’m dying to get my pre-ordered X100s. This waiting game is starting to become unbearable… Ha!
The X Pro 1 is out of stock everywhere in Hong Kong too. They told me there is no word from Fuji on the next delivery. On guy simply said the the model is already discontinued. My guess is that Fuji is probably planning an upgrade of the Pro 1 that incorporates most features of the x100s. Certainly look forward for that
Horrible flickering rangefinder and menuorganisation.
Maybee they can also make a better outsider leathering and integrated flash. A new strap and more ISO.
Last but not least i need a large Sensor with panoramafunktion, better Raw conversion and Support for tifexport. Also i Need 8000 shutterspeed instand of 4000. If Fuji will concurate to prof. camera like Nikon D800 it should bee offer these functions and high display resolution.
After and only after that i would by one for 1500$ or less.
