ENJOY: First REAL LIFE image of the FUJIFILM X-Pro2… and Merry X-mas my fellow X-shooters :-)

white board

What you see above, is the first real life image of the Fujifilm X-Pro2. It looks exactly like the sketches made 2 days ago by our trusted Japanese source.

This leak also comes from a very kind trusted source, who wanted to make little X-mas present to all of us 🙂 .

At this point, allow me to express my deepest gratitude to all sources, who ever shared correct information with Fujirumors. From anonymous sources, who shared a little tidbit of information that helped me to start my investigations, to the trusted sources, who are always willing to help me to sort out all the fake rumors and safely guide me through the rumor jungle. You Rock 🙂 .

and I tell you my fellow X-shooters… there is more to come, so stay tuned on Fuji X Forum, Facebook, RSS-feed and Twitter

Oh, and Merry Xmas 🙂

thanks oyuX-shirtsRa

  1. Is it possible that Fuji waited so long with the release of the XP2 for having trouble with making a real rangefinder mechanism combined with the evf? Do you guys think it’s going to have the split image in the center of the ovf?

    1. No. The time taken represents the lack of a need for updating such a gimmicky camera. In the meantime Fuji has explored a number of other camera types, hit a HUGE success with X-T1, and X-E2 even. What we got from that experience with X-T10, a hybrid between X-T1 and X-E2.

Only now are they revisiting the X-Pro2 and it’s really only a minor tweak update, a few extra controls and integration of all the other tech they managed to produce for the other cameras.

This camera is truly the most hipster thing Fuji sells. The real flagship is the X-T1 and its successor is likely to be a more meaningful update. In the meantime, this low hanging fruit offering can satisfy a certain segment of Fuji X fanatics.

          1. Not important to have used one? Okay!

You know that the sensor and the focussing on the XP2 will actually be inferior to the XT1?

(I actually own both the XT1 and XP1 and whilst the electronic viewfinder and focussing on the XT-1 is a clear generation better, I actually personally prefer the format of the XP1).

          2. It’s not a question as to which camera has the better sensor or focusing system, but rather the difference in price (i.e. value for money) and versatility (i.e. value for money). The X-T1 is a much more versatile camera, being able to handle lenses from super-wide to super-tele; whereas I doubt anyone will seriously use the up-coming 100~400mm on an X-Pro2. If priced equal, the X-T1 is more value for money than the X-Pro2, especially for single-camera photographers.

          3. I think the same way – this X-Pro2 form is never the right choice for me, as I use the 16-55 and the 50-140, in field for many hours. Well, I´m definitely saving some cash in January, but there will be surely many happy people.

          4. Can’t argue with that. If I replace my X-T1 it will be for the X-T2 and only if the A7rii replacement is not properly weather proofed. I’d prefer my A7rii to have some of the manual controls of the T1 but I prefer the custom controls , video and IQ of the A7rii. I love using both cameras to be honest and even though I enjoyed the X-pro1, it wasn’t a patch on either in terms of flexibility. Long / short lens, studio / hills and climbing etc. The unique selling point of the X-Pro was lost as soon as you went over 55mm…. tiny OVF square.

          5. The X pro 1 can handle any lens that the XT1 can. It has an EVF. That is a non issue. The new one will have a much better EVF than the old.

          6. In a general sense the XE2S should be the X-Pro2, but smaller and with an EVF only. Probably missing some other things as well.

          7. Sorry, we’re discussing the X Pro line, not the XE line. Presumably whatever fundamental differences between the two lines will continue but I would personally prefer to stick to discussion of equipment that i have direct experience of.

          8. Not necessarily. Using the EVF, you can put any kind of lens in front of the x-pro.
So, the truth is, the x-pro line gives you even more choices than the x-t line (lack of OVF).

          9. There is nothing “hipster” about the camera if you prefer a rangefinder styled experience with an OVF. If you don’t appreciate the design just move along and buy a X-T1/10.

I still prefer my X-Pro 1 to my X-T1 from a body and controls standpoint. If it had the updates the X-T1/E2 have it would without a doubt be my main camera and I wouldn’t have an X-T1.

          10. “If priced equal, the X-T1 is more value for money than the X-Pro2, especially for single-camera photographers.”

So in spite of the newer sensor, and the updated focus system and the at least equal, if not better, EVF, the XT1 will remain the better value camera if the X Pro 2 is priced the same? Because?

So what does the X Pro 2 have to do to be an improvement over the XT-1? Produce A1 size prints?

          11. I for one, will never again buy a camera where i have to put my nose against the screen. I love the xpro-1, but the real gem, for me, is the x-e2.

            Yes, i do have a big nose…

  2. I wonder – on Sonyalpharumors they say that the a6100/a7000 is to be announced at CES, Jan 05.
Would it be wise of Fuji to wait 10 days(!!!) after that announcement with the X-Pro2 announcement?
Aren’t they risking loosing important audience to Sony with its shiny new camera and spec?
    Something doesn’t add up.

    1. where exactly do they say the A6100/A7000 would be launched then? (can’t find the rumor)

Because the last A6000 successor rumors that I remember are months old.

        1. thing is: according to the Sony leaks last year, the A6000 successor should have come in Q2 2015. Now – over half a year later there is still nothing.

I don’t see where Sony is going with their APS-C line up. Let’s see where Fuji is going 🙂

    2. Actually, that might be a really good thing. One rumor was that the X-Pro2 would get the same new base sensor as the Sony a7000. If true it would make sense that Sony would get the big splash. I suspect that the X-Pro2 is going to get the same base sensor as the a6000 (great sensor BTW) but this gives me some slight hope we are getting something cutting edge

    1. Oh damn yes!!! It’s so large that you can take a whole picture with it now. Not just a crop picture like before, but man, a real picture!!!!

  3. Thanks for all these leaks and rumors…
Any news about the sensor? The camera shape and controls look nice, but I am concerned about what sensor will Fuji put inside them… An old Sony? A new one? A BSI one would be great news…

  4. In 2016 pro level cameras should have a tiltable LCD screen at least even when looking like a retro camera from the 70th.

    1. I thought the same thing. I hope it is the same size as the X-Pro1. I really liked how it fit my hand. The X-T1 is just a tad small for me. If it is smaller, like the X-E2, I’m sure others will be delighted. Just personal preference. 🙂

  5. Patrick, I am visiting FR site almost daily and FR is the only Twitter feed I am following regarding the Fujifilm cameras and lenses. I truly appreciate your effort to keep us up to date with current developments and possible future products, and I am aware of the amount of time you must be spending doing this “public service” job. Thank you!
But I am seeing posts like this one with Frankenstein-style mockups or the one with “sketches” as inevitably inaccurate, floating on the borderline with sensationalism. Please keep the usual quality level and don’t cross to the dark side of journalism!

Sensationalism: “noun (especially in journalism) the presentation of stories in a way that is intended to provoke public interest or excitement, at the expense of accuracy”.

    1. I’m sorry, the Japanese source can’t draw better, and this is the only real life image I could get. the images might not be the “official” ones, but they answer many questions regarding the buttons and controls, which might be of interest for readers. And the button/controls shown in the sketch and this image are 100% accurate. That’s why I thought it would be good to share them.

Sure, they create excitement… but that’s how rumors are, excting.

  6. Sweet! The rumors are nearly fully factual!

The bottom mockup is definitely photoshop (and it says so in the caption). The top with just the one side/corner angle looks real.. except the fugitive thing in the lcd screen… photoshopped in or perhaps taped over.. whatever, I like what little that appears real that I can see!

Admittedly, looking at the structure and detail of the lower corner of the rear screen, it looks like it could be a flip out screen?! I know rumors and recent sketches suggests there is NOT a tilt screen, but maybe more specifically it could actually be a “flip out screen”?.. I copied the image and brought it into photoshop to see if I could use levels to lighten up shadows and bring out more details.. and if you do that, you can definitely see the rear screen looks separate from the body. I really do believe it is a flip out screen! woo-hoo! i know some people strongly disagree a rangefinder style camera should have a flip out screen, but man I wanted one in the new x-pro2 and it is so useful for low and high angles and to take waste-level discreet shots. If you don’t like it, then don’t use it, how hard is it to ignore and not use if you don’t want it?… but, I can’t imagine it won’t be used even if you originally never wanted it.

… either it’s a flip out screen on the rear … if not, then I can’t see why they may have made a less streamlined and clean body by deciding to separate the screen from the body? I have strong believe it’s a flip out screen. Anybody, copy image and bring up the levels to see details in the shadows… doesn’t it look like a separate screen?.. I think a final tell is the lower left corner of the screen has a small protrusion, like a corner bumper, which I’ve seen on rear lcd screens that flip out… i think an added protection to a flip out screen when out, or I think adds a bumper or buffer between the screen and body when you are trying to fold out or back up.

I doubt there will be a touch screen on the (flip out) rear screen. I would definitely welcome it as it is a nice touch to quickly navigate through photos and menus, but I highly doubt they will integrate a touch screen.

From what is limited in visibility, the button placements, dials & other details look accurate to the sketches (provided the roughness).

Too hard to see from this angle, but hope my x-pro1 thumbs up still fits on this new x-pro2.. looks like it should if overall all the major features are proportionately the same.

One concern is the hot shoe… some of the sketches show it protrudes or stick up above the top plate (check out the rear and especially the front sketch rendering).. just hope that’s just cause it’s a bad sketch and not actually like that.. it would totally take away from the clean flat look of the upper plate on top of the camera with a square bump sticking out.. if they could not keep it flat like it is now.. Hard to tell from this latest real photo.. there appears to be a hot shoe cover inserted, but it’s not sitting flush or flat, so it’s kind of hard to tell. I don’t think it will be like that and should be flat across the top.

Can’t tell from the photos and no official release of info on the sensor in this X-Pro2, but a while back one of the Fuji Guys (Greg) seem to state that the X-Pro2 will be well worth the wait.. didn’t specify how or why, but I feel the suggestion was that not only the outside design, but the sensor will be something new and better.. Either they kept super tight wrap on info about an entirely new sensor technology (such as the rumored organic sensor tech.), or it will be just improved 16mp or more likely bump up to 24mp with improved resolution, iso, noise & DR capabilities.

OR… less likely, but kind of cool, if they go the Sony route (and Leica SL) and allow a full frame sensor in the X-Pro2 with adapted XF mount. It has been suggested in past posts somewhere that technically, the XF mount and X camera bodies should have just enough room to support a full frame sensor.

So, if Fuji makes the X-Pro2 Full Frame with adapted XF mount, they can still take the existing APS-C lenses but use in crop mode, and have a new line up of Full Frame XF mount lenses (FXF lenses?!). Sony has done this with the E mount (thus FE lenses) and recently Leica has done this with the newest SL… essentially it uses the same mounting system as the Leica T (APS-C) cameras but adapted for full frame (and of course you can use the Leica T lenses in crop mode). I believe Leica has renamed the mount for the new SL the SL mount (instead of FT for Full Frame T mount or something like that). That makes sense if they wanted to please the Fuji X shooters that have been aching for full frame… they can still make and use APS-C XF lenses (existing owners won’t feel gypped or need to scrap their existing lens collection), and add on a full frame XF lens line up.. owners will have option to continue to shoot in APS-C with their existing lenses and/or go full frame on the new X-Pro2… maybe, just maybe… if they go this route..

I think technologically, they could do this, but financially, does it make sense to start a new full frame lens line up in addition to their current APS-C XF lenses?.. I think the other rumors about Fuji skipping Full Frame battle and jumping over into medium format might seem more likely and make more sense. They have had a significant medium format presence in the past (with film) and if they’re going to do something new and different, I guess go all the way and take 2 steps forward instead of just 1?.. time will tell, and I hope it will be in January (or sooner)!

Christmas wish: Can we get a new image every day till the official release?!

  7. That definitely appears to be a tilting LCD display, very similiar to the one on my Fuji X30. This is good for us landscape photographers.

    1. Nah, I’m not gonna use a touch screen to select focus points when my eye is to the viewfinder. Having options is always a good thing.

  8. 1. The x mount is not large enough for FF lenses. And the chance that Fuji introduces a size between APSC and FF is slim to none. And the Fuji guts would obviously generate positive promo, they won’t say the camera will be just okay.

      1. I don’t believe the Fuji Guys just said it’ll be “just okay”… “well worth the wait” if I’m quoting correctly.. see here. Why should we be waiting nearly 3 years for “just okay”?

        http://www.fujirumors.com/fuji-guy-greg-says-the-x-pro2-wont-be-full-frame-but-it-will-be-worth-the-wait-admiringlight-interview/

Full frame in such small cameras we have today most people didn’t think possible just a couple years ago. If Sony and Leica has proven anything, that nothing is impossible.. Again, E mount takes full frame (FE) for Sony.. previously named T mount now takes SL full frame for Leica.

And, I believe somebody, forgot who, it was from Fuji Fumors back in Feb 2015. This is all speculation, but the possibility and how you compare other cameras that have done this seem to suggest you could possibly stuff a full frame sensor into the camera using the X mount.

        http://www.johncaz.net/blog/x-mount-xf-lenses-may-support-fx

To be honest, I don’t care and probably wouldn’t want it to be full frame.. the lenses would be noticeably larger and heavier.. for quality fast glass.. unless you are ok with small F number and/or ok with manual focus only lenses, then maybe they could be fast and small(er). I say keep APS-C format on the X-Pro2… but, if it was interchangeable or adaptable as I wrote in speculation, they at least we have options which is never a bad thing.

I’m no expert, but hopeful and wishful thinker, and just an enthusiast very patiently waiting for the X-Pro2 to be officially announced and all speculation out with all facts in soon!

    1. I pulled the shadows in the image. If that’s not a tilt screen. Then I don’t know what they were thinking. The screen is not flush with the body. PLUS there are no buttons on the left side. Only cameras with tilt screens do this.

This pretty much 100% confirms that it has a tilt screen

      1. Agreed. I welcome this personally. Word out for a long time is that it would not have a tilt of flip out screen, so I think it’ll be a nice surprise if it really is… and the looks of the photo it has to be.

        1. Hahaha I didn’t see your comment about you doing the same! Great minds think alike! Next time I need to read through all the comments.
It is definitely a welcome addition! Shooting from a tripod below 3ft will no longer be problemsome! And I don’t have to try to have my girl to boost me up on her shoulders. I weigh 220 and her 135lbs body just can’t take that anymore! Lol

    2. That part of the picture does look strange! There is some color cast (higher color temperature) on the screen bevel that is odd. The image on the screen is most certainly photoshopped in place (!?)
      However
      1. There is no previous rumors about a tilt or swivel screen
      2. No tilt screen is not mentioned or sketched on the “Live Leaks” from yesterday
      3. Looking at the picture above and at the sketches, there are no joints or hinge as far as I can see
My conclusion/ guess is that the X-PRO2 will not have a tilt or swivel screen.

  9. Ha, I’ve been trying to get hold of a photo I could pass on. I know people who have had prototypes pass through their hands, but of course nobody is allowed to shoot nice clear product photos of them yet! Looks like somebody beat me to it. Ah well. I’m trying to sweet-talk my way into having a play with one soon, in any case.

      1. Pretty much. I’m hoping that now one picture has gotten out, they’ll get a little more relaxed. It’s usually not too hard to get hands-on before release, or even announcement, but it usually takes a bit of leaking before they give up and send it out properly.

  10. Now tell me this Fuji rumors….WHY can’t they center the tripod mount with the lens!?!?!!??! Why can’t they do this??!?! It’ll make room to change batteries while mounted(atleast easier). Plus panos will be much easier

  11. Anything new and exciting to look in the new Xpro2 that we have not had before? My current Fuji is XT10. Anything groundbreaking? IBIS, better AF, finally fixed the Flash Xsync? I want to get excited by something!

    1. For an X-Pro specifically?

IBIS?.. don’t count on it, not that I don’t want it cause it’s so great in my Olympus OM-D E-M5 MkII, you can reach such slow shutter speeds handheld so easily with any lens you mount to it. I really wish they would add IBIS to Fuji’s, but probably not this time around.

Better AF:.. You should expect almost certainly. Better AF in mirrorless cameras is always a work in progress and gets better each time.. maybe not in leaps and bounds, but at least they trend is to get better and better each time plus firmware updates to aid in the process.

Flash Xsync?.. not sure what you mean by fixed?.. According to recent rumors and the sketches, expect Flash sync to be up to 1/250th… that’s better and closer to the norm.. I would welcome HSS.. which I believe you can do with the Nissin i40 in manual mode, possibly up to even 1/8000? somebody who has more actual experience with Nissin i40 + Fuji X cameras will have to confirm this.

What else for the next X-Pro2?… weather sealing most likely for the first time.. there just got to be weather sealing this time.. not that I use my equipment much in the rain, but with “Pro” in the name and many comparable high end models, weather sealing seams necessarily to add to that pro level designation.

If you like using the OVF, rare in nearly all other X cameras, then the X100T’s electronic rangefinder mode will be very cool, particularly with manual focus assist.. and if they implement it, which they really should be, then it will be nice to see how that works with all focal length ranges in the XF line up.. right now, it’s only in the fixed X100T’s 23mm lens… and if they can stuff the same (if not better) EVF into the hybrid viewfinder of the X-Pro2, then that will be nice to get such a large clear EVF in the X-Pro2 when you use it.

If the OVF is not your cup of tea or selling point, then just stick with a good EVF like with the X-T10, or an X-T1.. or wait for the next X-T2 or upcoming X-E2S … or X70.

Again, IBIS, better AF, better flash sync… i wouldn’t say these are necessarily ground breaking even if implemented, but they will certainly be exciting if they can get all that with improvements and then some into the new X-Pro2.

What sensor will be in the X-Pro2 is going to be highly watched and anticipated.. there hasn’t been a change..hardly.. essentially the same great 16mp sensor essentially since the beginning.. some tweaks and phase detect most recently added to the most recent late models.. though, that could also be more and better.

I suspect because there is the option to have +/- 5 EV for exposure compensation, this may suggest that the sensor is going to be new with better ISO, noise and DR to allow for such a broader range of exposure compensation.. that’s what I believe.. will see soon enough.

      1. I meant HSS of course. Yes I had Nissin i40 and it is kind of achievable but not official, and I use HSS regularly on my other cameras. In terms of IBIS, Fuji is currently THE ONLY company (other than failing Samsung) that makes mirrorless cameras with no some sort of IBIS. Olympus has it, Sony has, Panasonic has a form of it (I don’t count Canon and Nikon in mirrorless because they are jokes for mirrorless). Is the technology patented in a way that cannot be implemented? Sony had an old image stab in all A mount cameras and even Minoltas before it.

        1. IBIS has some drawbacks (and probably costs a lot of R&D) so Fuji probably thought not to implement it would be a better idea.

I could see a perfectly implemented IBIS in my camera, but if it weren’t perfect, I prefer leaving it out

          1. shuttershock, noise due to heat because it’s hard to get the heat away and a few others.

ibis is cool but it’s a gimmick. It’s only a must have if specs are more important than images

          2. I find it useful to have it, like brake assistant on cars. Anyway, Olympus solved the shuttershock issue a year ago on Em1 via firmware update. Em5mk2 has no shuttershock issues. Both don’t have heat issues due to it.
Can’t say the same for the Sony a7 mk 2 cameras: perhaps sensor size is too big and thus the heat issue.
So far, only those who have never used it are writing negative things about it.
And just for records: it can be turned off if not needed (long exposure photography or simply if you don’t need it).

          3. I have used every Omd since the em5.

The two things that I learned?

            1. Any form of stabilisation isn’t really benificial to me (either I do people with fast shutter speeds or ultra long exposures which use a tripod. Stabilisation is usefull for documentary (snapshots))

            2. Any camera can (and does)suffer from shutter shock as long as there is an mechanical shutter. even the Em5 II. Of course there are options (full electronic or AS (electronic first curtain) but they come with their drawbacks too

All in all IBIS is a nice to have but no must have. It’s a must have for all of those just looking for specs, but you can live sith out it without problems (otherwise I would have sold my fujis)

          4. Which manufacturer has IBIS that has drawbacks? The Olympus has amazing effective IBIS, and so does Sony. Panasonic GX7/8 while not as effective as Olympus is still better than nothing at all and there are no drawbacks to having it.

          5. olympus, sony, panasonic and pentax have drawbacks

panasonic just released a firmwareupdate that puts the gx8 into electronic shutter mode (from 1/60 to 1/320) because shutter shock was ruining pictures.

The others have those problems too

        2. Yeah, like I said, IBIS would be welcomed, but it doesn’t look like it’s coming anytime soon, much like touch screen… I like fuji lenses, but some of their decisions on which lenses get OIS I don’t understand.. like the 16-55mm f2.8.. nice lens but it’s huge with no IBIS? why couldn’t they have fit OIS in that lens.. would have been great at all focal range especially the long end. And the 90mm f2 is beautiful, but I think it would have made sense to include OIS in such a lens. But, I’ll leave comments about the lenses there as that’s bordering into another topic.

HSS Flash, yeah, I hope they have better implementation of it..Like what you said, can get away with it using the Nissin i40, at leaset. One of the big reasons I kept and still use my Olympus OM-D cameras is that they can mechanically HSS up to 1/8000 using their flash such as the FL-600R. It’s totally powerful enough and works great when you want to shoot portraits wide open in outdoor sunny days. Can’t tell you how convenient and awesome that is so you don’t necessarily have to slap on an ND filter or stop down.

So, yeah, Fuji should know they need to up their flash systems overall.

  12. So they’re catching up with competitors: 24mp and real AF. Isn’t the price tag supposed to be something like $1800.00 US?
I like Fuji and their lenses are great but it’ll be hard to spend that much on innovation that’s just catching up with competition.
If Sony or a third party figures out how to make lenses that aren’t rubbish then Fuji will be in troubleIMO. Please don’t tell me “it’s cheaper than Leica manual focus” I’m not in that market.
Hopefully Fuji will wow us after running with the same sensor for 5 years. I started building up the lens collection and I’m waiting for the next model before I go all in.

    1. Anything above 1,400$ will be overpriced. For the rumored specs. i have seen sofar, there is nothing to justify a price of 1,800$. But that is just my opinion.

    2. $1300 or $1400 for an aps-c sized sensor camera is the limit, in my opinion. I have the X-Pro 1, but I didn’t buy it till it was being sold at a discount.

While it will undoubtedly be a far better camera in terms of AF and features, the real questions are how bright and large will the viewfinder be (it needs to be as bright, if not brighter, and large as the one in the X-Ti) and what sensor will it have.

    3. Sony lenses aren’t rubbbish, not all of them. Sonnar 55/1.8 FF is spectacular but big. Sonnar 35/2.8 FF is kind of slow but it’s tiny and makes for a great compact/light package that’s pretty much the size of Fuji offering but FF. And you have doubts, you can always pick one of the sony-optimized Zeiss loxia lens with great feel/optical qualities + best in class MF focusing integration. And you’ll get built-in optical stabilization which really helps.

I’m mostly a Sony user but I’m eyeing Fuji as they’re doing something rather unique. Still, the problem I have is that Fuji cameras with comparables lenses (f1.4 for a decent DOF) are equal size or bigger than my old-school 35mm Nikon F SLR’s… but those are full frame. It feels like a regression.

The unique Fuji proposition with XPro and X100 is the OVF. If you ever seriously shoot Leicas/rangefinders with bright optical viewfinders you know what’s the value here. There is no point to buy those cameras if you only care about EVF.

I don’t care about megapixels really, as long as it’s ~14M+. But I hope Fuji will suprise us with some dynamic range improvements, not sure if that’s possible given they don’t produce their own sensor. I’m still shooting BW on film because, despite what many people are trying to say, there is no (decently priced) camera on the market which can provide similar dynamic range for BW.

    1. I don’t think we will see anymore firmware updates for the X-Pro 1, though I would welcome it. While it is slower, only has 1/4000 sec shutter speed, and doesn’t have a very bright or large EVF, it is still a very nice camera. I am hoping they nail the X-Pro 2, which really boils down to the viewfinder and the sensor, as we know the rest will be very nice.

  13. This, like most things on this site, is an “approved leak.” I like your dedication, but we all know that you know more than you let on. Anyway, my excitement level is extremely low, as I see no major leap forward after 4 years. This will be marginally better than xt1. Pics will look more or less the same, and AF will still be behind average dslr. With no “bells and whistles ” I don’t really belive there will be some game changing advantage to upgrade.

    1. every leak is indeed “approved” by my sources. I would never post something, if I don’t have clear and expressed permission of the source.

        1. well… you are free to think that, even though it’s wrong. I know the story behind this image, and behind the sketches of the Japanese source, and behind most of my rumors (except the anonmyous ones). And I tell you, the answer is as simple as that: FR-sources are amazing 🙂

    2. “…I see no major leap forward after 4 years. This will be marginally better than xt1…”

So you say this will be more or less like a X-PRO1s which many people here was expecting about two years ago? I really hope they will come up with something better than that.
      23 days and counting /B

    3. What, exactly, were you hoping for? The industry is probably out of major leaps at this point. You will see a much improved sensor, EVF, and internal processor but I think the feedback to Fuji was to keep the X-Pro2 close to the original as possible. Fuji is not about to put a 40+ MP, full frame, sensor in this camera with IBIS, trying to keep up with Sony. That is not their vision. But, if you want that, $3,200 will get you a body only. 🙂

      1. I feel this would have been fine 2 years ago. Things like ibis are standard today. My feeling is, like with my Gen 1 X , slow af, odd tonality in many lighting conditions, small DR improvement. This should hAve much better DR, low light performance, and AF that , objectivly, matches most dslr in low light.

        1. Except for Panasonic (GX7 and GX8) IBIS is still only used by Olympus, Pentax and Minolta/Sony who have it patented since long time. Giants like Canon and Nikon don’t use it as they developed optical stabilisation already in the days of film. So no, IBIS is not the standard today as a clear majority of the cameras produced today don’t have it. Though I agree it would be nice. Especially with the nice prime lens line Fujifilm have. So let’s hope they are working on it. I do however doubt it will be included this time. New sensor, tilting screen and other updates are quite a lot already. But IBIS would surely be the killer feature for the third generation (X-Pro3, T-T3 X-T30) cameras!

  14. Hello Patrick, first of all merry christmas and thank you for all the hard work that you put into this website.
Are you sure that this really a picture of the upcoming xpro2?
Maybe it’s it is the x70 or even xe2s intead.

Because I personally hope that the xpro2 still won’t get the flip screen.
It just wouldn’t suite the design aspect of the xpro.

        1. Given that they both had their WiFi registered at pretty much the same time, I don’t think you’ll need to wait long…

  15. Merry X-Mas Patrick! Great work, like always. Love your website. Keep going on, please! And don’t forget to share your link to buy this beauty, for the well deserved commission. 😉

      1. Bingo. X-Pro 1 for people that want to pretend they are using a rangefinder and who forgot that most compact digital cameras looked exactly like it until the mid 2000s, and the X-T series for people that want the world to think they’re using a film SLR…

BUT… joke is on the world! They are using a digital camera! Totally got ya!

    1. Why would it change for those people, for the people that never would purchase an X-Pro 1 in the first place? For them, there is the X-E series, which is basically the every-other-interchangeable mirrorless camera style, and the X-T series, which is basically a dSLR without the OVF and with a dash of anachronism.

Fujifilm have all but the modern angle covered.

  16. The q menu is in bad place !!! I use many often ae l button and think that will have many problems during this operation with push q menu button thab ael ! It’s bad idea !. To many buttons here !!! Why fuji !!

    1. Exactly what I thought, they should have hidden the q button inside the battery compartment.

Even better, in the x-pro2 they should actually make the battery compartment have a key lock. A tiny little key which has two advantages: easy to loose, and hard to use!!

Only then, nobody really nobody on this planet will hit the q button accidentally. Perfect. Problem solved.

    2. “Why fuji !!”

Because you are not the only one they design for! And where should they put the Q(uick) button? Hide it?

    1. Let’s hope they’ve put a sensor into it at all!!
Imagine these freaks at Fuji putting in some stupid roll of film and say: you kiddies go f@&$ yourself — now we are going RETRO for real!!!
This would scare the shit out of most of you guys!

    2. I second the grip issue. It’s rubber, so it wears off after a few months of use. Eventually it will fall off. Can be re-glued, by I’d prefer things done right in the first place… A simple vertical metal strip would be better.

        1. I use it… this is what the camera is for. And it’s not just the rubber, it’s the glue that fails.
And Fuji, instead of defending the rubber, why not replacing with something more durable, like metal. How much more would that cost?

          1. Assuming people who can make a grip last longer than a few months don’t use a camera. Look after your gear and it’ll last longer.

  17. People talking about too many buttons on the back. The xpro 1 also has 13 buttons.

Soo it literally has the exact same amount of buttons on the back!

    1. It is a LOT of buttons, but as long as they’re spaced well and placed for intentional use, it is good. While I think there are too many buttons on the X-Pro 1, I never accidentally activated a single one, while on the X-T1, both my fingers and my wife’s skinny fingers constantly trip things we shouldn’t trip.

    1. Don’t listen to this guy Fuji. The joystick/fast af point selection is way overdue. If this guy wants retro design he can buy some old film camera.

      1. Okay, so lets talk about the Fuji X-Pro1 classic design and to implement the af-function, i don’t need such a horrible “design highlight” like a “joystick”. Just my …

        1. Let’s talk then. What is so ‘classic’ about X-Pro 1 controls that the joystick ruins? What control scheme of the X-Pro 1 absolutely screams classic and should remain inviolate from digital/unlabelled intrusion?

Go ahead, name a single feature and I’ll name three that counteract it already. There is no need to pretend that the X-Pro 1 is trying to be anything classic beyond its very thin skin.

What makes it a better camera is more important than protecting a thin, and randomly enforced veneer of classicism.

  18. Thanks Patrick for all. Only site I visit daily, love reading the comments too. Regarding the x-pro2, should be announced a day after my b-day, if your date is correct and they don’t change it 🙂
I thought it’s not so groundbreaking (like a larger or square sensor). But in the end, am really happy with the system, so I’ll stay no matter what.

Can any xpro1 owners that also own an x100(/s/t), tell me if the xpro 1 feels a bit like the x100? I really fell in love with the x100s so I also got the x-t1, but I don’t have that magical feeling (maybe because of the lenses being interchangeable or I don’t have the right ones yet). I don’t really care about the viewfinder position, as I use my left eye, but the larger protrusion is surely great on the xpro2. I also don’t use the OVF.

    1. Hi Ray, the XPro1 is larger than the X100 series. Size wise I would recommend the XE-2 for you. This camera is practically the same size as the x100 series and since you don’t use the OVF anyway it “ONLY” has an EVF with 2.36 Pixels resolution wise. The AF should be slightly better than the XPro1’s but FUJI plans to release a brand new AF via firmware for this camera early 2016. So go for this one – it will suit you better I believe.

      1. Thanks a lot for your reply. I will check it out as well as the xpro2. I already have the x-t1 so I will probably wait for the X-E2s. Thanks again, very helpful!

  19. A real christmas present from fuji would be the bloody camera already, not a crappy photo of a camera, 4 years fuji, waaaaaaay to slow and still no decent video anywhere in sight!!

    1. I hope that the four years were spent well. Make the X-Pro 1 THE interchangeable Fujifilm camera that speaks volumes about what X is purported to be about. As long as Fujifilm can make it work the way it is advertised and fanboiyed about, good on them. 4 years isn’t too long if done well. If it is going to be more expensive, and keep the anachronistic design, it should appeal to a much smaller subset of photographers, among whom will be perfectionists, a group to whom the X-T1, X-E, and even the X-T10 will not appeal.

  20. At least, it exists. I swore won’t surrender buying another Fuji just for its promised features and irresistible looks – a judgment error I made buying the X100, X-Pro1 – all having terrible quirks – and X-T1 which is a nice camera but really not the holy grail some made of it in way too many reviews. The next Fuji really needs to proof it’s capable to take a giant step forwards compared to the 16MP X-trans and its cumbersome RAW-conversions, while it has better competences than anything wearing an A7 or SL-label. I’m afraid it won’t be if it was send to us with (another) entry level Sony APS/C sensor. It isn’t true, Fujifilm, is it? Not another wormy, wax skin, green foliage spoiling X-trans?

    1. Obviously the JPEG engine is bad for skin at higher ISOs but otherwise apart from repeating pattern moire and some painterly affect on repeating patterns, I’m pretty satisfied. However, a jump to 24 mp would be nice.

      1. Me, too, but we won’t get that. It seems that feature to-dSLR parity is important only so far in mirrorless cameras. I have no idea why the shutter button overrides everything else.
