I confess, I couldn’t resist and I didn’t manage to wait for the NEX-7. I just bought the NEX-5n. Why should that be a sin? Because I wanted the NEX-7, and I still want it! But I couldn’t resist to try out the superb NEX-5n. So I may will end this year with two NEX cameras in my hands. I need some excuse to justify that in front of my girlfriend. Suggestions are appreciated 🙂
Something curious about the Sony store: 30minutes after having it purchased at the European Sony online store they (Sony) called me to confirm if the address where correct. I said yes and they told me they will now(!) ship the camera. Cool! That’s a service!
I don’t like the current NEX lenses, I don’t need zooms and the only pancake (the [shoplink 2998]16mm f/2.8[/shoplink]) is not as fast as I need. That’s why I bought a [shoplink 7984 ebay]Leica M to NEX adapter[/shoplink] to use my [shoplink 8725 ebay]Nokton 35mm f/1.4[/shoplink]. I still don’t know if I will buy the external viewfinder which is very expensive here in Europe. I am not going to write a technical review, but I will try to make some real world comparisons with other mirrorless cameras. And I will use the cam for my next documentary work of a dying city in Belgium (I will be there from September 16 to 25). Anyway, I confess, the NEX-7 is still on my dream list. Cannot wait to see the first reviews of that camera soon!

Just lie man, it looks like the 5…it’s the same camera she just never noticed the N and if you get the EVF well… Scream… Hallelujah! Sony listened to me and made an EVF for the NEX5… Katching! With the %N you will need the EVF for manual focus, i bought the clear viewer for my NEX5 and it changed the experience quite a lot. Manual focus holding the camera like a zombie is not cool. When you get the Zeiss 24mm, buy the Leica 36mm OVF for the X1 if you want hybrid duty. I will on the NEX7…this will be my walk around hybrid kit…
Just do couple of nice pictures/video with your girlfriend and she will justify your purchase, probably. Or tell that you get excellent camera almost for free if compare to how much will cost NEX7+CZ lens :).
Finally every man is more or less gadgetoman, take it easy.
The wife and I were in Belgium on vacation in July for two weeks. Shame we didn’t get a chance to see Antwerp. We did see Bruge, Brussels, and Dinant. All were very beautiful and picture worthy in their own ways.
If buying the NEX-5N is a sin, then I must be going to hell. I pre-ordered both the NEX-7 w/ kit lens and the Zeiss 24/1.8.

If the NEX-7 show in reviews to have as good sensor as 5N I maybe buy
NEX-7 later and sell the NEX-5N. I don’t need 24MP sensor, but the in camera EVF I would love to have. Also a bit larger camera and more buttons so better user control interface.
I did the same thing from BH (pre order)… except that my two cameras will be a NEX 5 and a NEX 5N.
Once the 5n shows i’ll ebay the 5. Can’t have a camera gap as i have 3 wk old kid who needs picture taking.
Actually the fact that I have a newborn has a lot to do with why i might get killed for the difference between the price of the 5n and whatever i get for the 5. Hopefully i can get near $400.

The advice with giving the NEX-5n to the girlfriend works! That is what I will do with my NEX-5 and she is now ok with me buying ultra expensive NEX-7.

Whether or not Sony could have foreseen this, it’s turned out to be a really smart move. The NEX-5n is generating a ton of interest in the brand, right before a major upgrade path will also be available.
Also, the NEX-5n is based on mostly existing and proven technologies, so the cost can be kept low and the quality high. And the kinks have largely been worked out in the design, making this camera an excellent value.

Congrats!! The most difficult part to buy all these toys is tell your girl and explain why is important in our lives have more than 1 camera, I’m in the same boat, I don’t know how justify to my girlfriend I’ll buy a nex 5n and a a77 or a65, I think to tell her one is for our vacations and the time we spend togheter etc, and the other is for work, and after tell her, I need to buy her a couple of shoes, boats, bags or a nice make up, to balance the situation 🙂 Good luck!!

By the way I bought the 5n while I wait for the new FF. I love it. I used the 15% off when registering to get the EVF. Remember, sinners are much more fun.
Congratulations ! Argl! I want to wait for the Nex7. Really difficult to wait more… I’m saving the money for a Nex7, 15, 21 and 35 mm Voigtlander pancakes lens, and 85mm f4 zm. We will see… I just want to use FF lens, since it obviously will come a FF, it must be ! Leica Evil, ZeissIkon with Sony FF sensor, or Sony’s own…. Just wait and see.
I have a stupid, off topic, EVF question… I require glasses to see things at a distance and with an OVF I needed my glasses or needed to adjust the focus on the camera. Since the EVF is just a representation of what I’m seeing it should be clear without glasses correct? If so that’s a plus for me and the EVF.
I think there is a dioptre adjustment on the EVFs.
I think there will be same problem with EVF. Image from electronic screen is delivered to the user in a same way it happen with focusing screen in case of OVF.
But with the OVF you’re looking through a “window” at something far away. With the EVF are you not looking at a “monitor” less that an inch from your eye? I guess I’ll find out in just over a month. 🙂
I think you are looking through the “window” only in case of old rangefinder cameras.

I have added myself to a pre-order list over at Precision-Camera.com for my NEX-7 + Zeiss 24mm f/1.8. I am selling off my Leica M8 to pay for this kit. If I get enough for the Leica I may not have to sell off my CV lenses (I couldn’t afford Leica glass) and order an M Mount Adapter. Which adapter would you recommend?

The problem you will have as gifting is they share the same lens. It’s time to get the girl her own gift. It’s always easier to apologize than to ask for permission 🙂
IMO, thus far you haven’t sinned because you haven’t received the NEX-7 yet. Perhaps when the NEX-7 is released you will change your mind about it and either not buy it or not keep it. Until you have the next NEX in your hands, you have time to think of excuses in case you do decide to keep both. I’d say you are contemplating sin, but haven’t committed one yet. It’s a venial sin anyway. Your girlfriend might tell you to go to hell if you do buy the NEX-7, but I doubt your Heavenly Maker will see it the same way. On that score, I think you’re safe. On other grounds, well, I really don’t know you that well.

Andrea here are a couple suggestions:
1. Give it as a gift to her, then use it together with her, or when she isn’t using it, until you can get the NEX 7
2. Buy it for yourself with the intention of selling it used when the NEX 7 comes out. You may be able to get more money for it than others. because you are somewhat of a public figure, so some people may pay a bit more for it just because you used it and you are well-known to the online photography community. But even if not, it will still be worth almost as much as you paid for it, so it will be just like you rented it instead of purchased it.

I think that after NEX-7 will be reviewed, you will be probably happy that you choose NEX-5N. Ofc maybe I will be wrong..
From my point of view NEX-5N is currently best available and affordable mirrorless. You can add SLT for better AF, or EVF for easier focusing/composing/reducing shake. Customizable, with great performace accros pretty large ISO range.
A dying city in Belgium? Do explain ;). I am from Belgium (near Ghent) and am not aware of such a city. Nevertheless: enjoy the new nex-5!
