If it only was a monochrome…
I am glad that Leica finally did something modern and original. Double cheers for ditching the 35 mm lens and coming to the market with a high speed 28 mm. Really glad that they decided to stop living in the past.
Is there a chance that Leica went with 28mm as opposed 35 to leave space for another edition at a longer focal length. Like a 50 or 75mm. Not that its a bargain, but its pretty much the cost of the lens. You get all the Leica-S tech, in the Leica-M form factor without the purist nostalgic mumbo jumbo. I see it as a second body for low light, augmenting a kit anchored by a cropped sensor interchangeable like the fuji or micro4/3.
No, Leica has other ideas – for a future “M” camera:

Pity, I was liking the idea having two of these. I could set the 28mm on a tripod and snap pics from my phone and take portraits with with a bright 75mm. Or make for interesting photo walks with my wife.
Given the pricing they’ve put out on the Q, it would be cheaper to own two Qs than buy an M with 2 lenses. And the places I take my camera, I’d be happy to never have to risk damaging my sensor during lens change. Plus the macro function and autofocus on the Q lens, make it more valuable than the 28mm Summilux its based on. More so on a longer focal length lens.
Just read about “The Future of the Leica M” and I definitely think a total replacement of the “traditional Messsucher” mechanism to Konost type focusing is a bad move… it’s the sole of Leica M. I do wish Leica creating another line of M type camera with such type of focusing incorporating with interchangeable auto focus lens, yet allowing some sort of adapter to us manual focus lens as an option would be a more proper move. In the end Leica need to attract more users and make money. I believe the Q is testing water for an interchangable auto focus camera for a much larger market segment. If “traditional Messsucher” mechanism is too expensive to open up a larger audience, I would just leave it at the top for those who can afford them. I am foreseeing an auto focus “M style” camera (call it “Leica A” for auto focus) with Konost type focusing and possibly auto focus lens with similar size lens compare to a manual focus ones at a small f-stop (to accompany all the electrical parts for the lens in order to keep the lens and camera small enough for practical use. Current Sony E system’s lens are just too huge)
