Fuji surprise soon? New X PRO 2 coming!

The video on top shows you the inside of the Fuji X PRO 1. And as you know the X PRO 1 has quite some quirks we hoped they could solve via firmware upgrade. Apparently this is not going to happen and Fuji will do some major hardware changes on a new X PRO 2 camera that sources from Fujirumors said will be announced at Photokina. This camera is likely to bring some major advancement in AF speed and sensor technique.

P.S.: Some other website speculated that the camera may feature a Full Frame sensor. I haven’t heard anything like that yet from my sources…

  1. I’m not sure Pro 1 will be replaced, but there will be a smaller, lighter and cheaper EVF-only version at Photokina with upgraded electronics. No inside info so I’m making it up of course, but that’s what they should do.

  2. I have always had some suspicion that Fuji knew going into this that hybrid AF was just around the corner and made the choice not to do too much in the CDAF arena, but to simply get it out there with less than optimized lenses for CDAF.

Perhaps this new X… could be running the new Sony 16MP with PDAF on sensor. One of the things the Fuji’s are currently really good at is accuracy, their CDAF is very very accurate, add PDAF on sensor and this thing would be killer.

My guess? Similar to X100 body wise, but with X mount. Still hybrid VF, no fancy Trans-X sensor or whatever it’s called, just the good honest Sony 16MP but now with phase detect and a significant (though still not super fast) improvement in AF.

Would anyone like the camera I just described? I know I would!

  3. I posted weeks and weeks ago that I was told (by a Random Fuji Salesguy) that they would show two new X-Pro cameras at PK: One slightly less expensive than the 1, and one slightly more expensive with slightly more features. (My guess for the “more” features is a tilt LCD and built-in diopter correction, which the X-Pro desperately needs.)

If true, this would be an ideal time to update the hardware as well to solve its various “issues,” so this rumor makes perfect sense. Stand by for fury from X-Pro 1 early adopters, followed by a torrent of illogical rationalizations (“irrationalizations”?) as to why their camera is still better.

PS — No “nostalgia-format” 36x24mm sensor. The entire lens line would need to be redesigned, and the lenses are the X line’s key feature (along with the absence of an AA filter, as preferred by false-resolution fans.)

      1. I’ve got m43, NEX and NX mount cameras and I prefer my X100 to all of them. And what exactly makes it a point and shoot Vivek? I think your definition differs from mine somehow.

      2. Unless Fuji was offering trade-ins or some substantial sugar to current XP1 owners, I can’t see how it wouldn’t be a marketing fiasco, no matter how great the theoretical new camera is. Going above the XP1 in price moves you into some very rarefied territory, coming in close to the XP1 means it’s the final release version to the XP1’a beta. Either basically means admitting that you rushed a project to market incomplete, didn’t really support it, and then dropped it like a hot rock, which wouldn’t give a warm fuzzy to the existing customer base or potential new ones. And Fuji isn’t upmarket enough to have a client base that’s completely immune to value or service considerations, and they’re still dealing with the X100’s SAB issues and the X10’s sensor issues. I just can’t see them doubling down by stiffing all the XP1 buyers. Leica might be able to pull something like that, Fuji can’t.

  4. Hope for the bayer color filter instead of current crap. Although I won’t buy it anyway, I don’t want to pay for gimmicks like pointless OVF.

  5. Uhhhh – the X-Pro1 was released 5 months ago wasn’t it? Pretty hard (impossible) to image they’d replace it already with an X-Pro2. The more likely scenario would be something like an X200 in my opinion.

  6. Here’s my wishlist (not that anybody cares though, hahaha).

    – Not much bigger than my X100, which has the perfect size in my opinion. Not too large to be cumbersome, not that small that i keep pushing buttons just because of holding it.

    – Faster AF, at least on par with GH2 which is now like 2 years old.

    – No stupid firmware issues, no lock ups, no freezing when waking up from sleep.

    – Improved menu (which i believe the X-Pro1 already has).

    – 16mp sensor, with good iso 3200.

    – Better battery life when using EVF.

    – If its an EVF-only solution, use an EVF with faster refresh rate.

    – Weather sealed? I don’t think that’s coming anytime soon, no lens in the lineup is weather sealed so…

    – In black, please.

I hope they come up with a great product this time, mature and without stupid quirks. They are soooo close to making the “perfect” travel and street camera!!!

  7. Many like their X Pro 1. I doubt Fuji is capable of designing a more advanced version in 2012/13. Maybe a simpler version to be accompanied by the upcoming 18-55 very obvious kit zoom.
X Pro 1 owners have to rely on firmware updtaes and start saving money for the X Pro 2…..
Myself I sit content with a D800 and a Sony RX100. The later is a very attractive alternative to a m43/APS-C mirrorless: Lots lighter, pocketable and with IQ very similar to f.i. Pana G3. To me, if you can carry the weight and cost of a FF as first camera that is the best choice. If not, the mirrorless alternatives can now (EM5, GH3) do well as first camera. In both cases, the Sony RX is a great second camera.

  8. Well the Xpro1 was a dud with its price, sad AF performance, pathetic MF, 3 lenses (2 good and one very disappointing) and virtually non-existent video. With the d600 coming, there are really no compelling reasons to buy the Fuji, if consumers can get FF for less with Nikon’s lens selection and fast AF with the ability to manually focus without turning the focus ring 5 times, a new Xpro will be as big of a dud as the current one. It had potential, Fuji seemed to release it before it was ready. Maybe they git it right with the next one. More expensive would be a mistake.

    1. There are plenty of people who want a high quality, smaller than dslr cam. Why do you think NEX is doing so well? There are also plenty of people that want to be able to use rangefinder lenses on a digital. The D600 is not interesting at all to people like me.

My personal opinion is the the XPro1 produces the best files of any APS-C camera out there. I switched from a 5dII, and in many ways, I think the Fuji is better. The autofocus is fine. It’s not blazing fast, but it’s very accurate. More accurate than my 5dii, even with lens micro adjustments. I don’t know why you have an axe to grind, but you come off as someone that’s never even put your hands on an xpro1 and are just spouting off some things you’ve read on the internet.

  9. What a great concept this camera was. How we tiptoe around real problems by calling them “quirks.” Or how we enclose the word “issues” in double quotes, as though they really aren’t. A disappointing fail, at a whopper of a price.

  10. really? surprising since i got the x pro 1 just about 6 months ago…

hopefully they will still make firmware updates to the x pro 1

  11. There are so many issues with this camera not least of all its price. You would think for a system that costs as much as a Canon EOS MKII and an L series lens or two, with all its warts and all (I own that system) Fuji would have considered price against the Mid to high end Canon or Nikon and not Leica. Don’t get me wrong, I would be very happy to sell my Canon stuff to get back to a rangefinder-like experience having spent 7 years with a Contax G2, but price will be the main issue here for me. Quirks I can deal with; price is another matter. To be honest the XP1 is really a dslr in sheep’s clothing. OK, it’s mirrorless, but other than that it works internally like a mid to high end DSLR without a decent modern autofocus system on board. I still want one though, but will now wait until after Photokina to see what is happening. If a XP2 does come out it may well price me out of the game. I won’t want the XP1 if that’s the case and won’t pay overkill prices for the new model. I will stick with my 5DMKII and reduce my lens count to a couple of primes – a 35mm and a 24mm and be done with it.
