(SR5) New Sony FE and Zeiss FE lenses coming in mid October. (SR4) One of them is the Zeiss 21mm FE Loxia!

The official Sony Russia registration of a new 24-70mm FE GM lens.

First I want to apologize: Obviously the one source who said Sony would announce now 7 new lenses at the IBC show was wrong. He contacted me back and said the lenses were only discussed in private (with other photographers and bloggers) and not in public. He misunderstood the message he got from Sony.

But I have good news for the folks anyway!
I got feedback from a couple of sources who talked with Sony at the IBC show. Both Sony and Zeiss will announce new FE lenses in exactly 1 month (mid October)!

  1. One of those lenses is rumored to be the 21mm Loxia (SR4 for now). Not sure yet if they did choose the [shoplink 9804 ebay]Biogon T* 2,8/21 ZM (jere on eBay)[/shoplink] or the
[shoplink 9804 ebay]C Biogon T* 4,5/21 ZM (here on eBay)[/shoplink] design as basis for the new lens.
  2. Sony Russia already registered the new 24-70mm FE GM lens 30 day. So this lens is coming too. (SR4). I am still wondering what the new “FE GM” definition will be all about…
  3. One fast prime and one telephoto FE zoom on the roadmap too (SR3)
  4. Two updated A-mouny lenses (SR3)
  5. Unclear what’s more on the FE roadmap…

The rumor is ranked as SR5 as multiple (and not only one) confirmed the lenses will be show at PhotoPlus. So this one has a 90% chance to be true.

  1. I’d love to see the fast prime be something unexpected, and something that isn’t a duplicate focal length of something that already exists as an autofocus FE lens… Like a 50mm F1.0 or a 75mm F1.4, ideally with Zeiss approved optics and the design aesthetics of the 35mm F1.4 FE Distagon!

Something that Canon or Nikon (or Sigma or Tamron) doesn’t currently manufacture would be just what the doctor ordered…

      1. Lol why? The mount allows for even faster lenses. And A7RM2 now provides faster focusing and reduced digital vignetting.

          1. And that Mistaken is not AF.

If Canon can do a 50mm F1.0 AF lens, with somewhat precise AF, Sony can definitely do an F1.0 (or an F0.95) with AF. Phase detect AF on the sensor combined with Contrast Detect AF should actually allow for much more precise focusing at razor thin depth of field than standard DSLR phase detection AF sensors are able to do…

    1. Nope sorry. SR5 was the announcement. The Otus info came from another site. My fault to have reported that other part too 🙁

  2. Personally, I need about 5 lenses from a system, and currently FE has none of those (and Sony’s unwilling to produce the A99II).
I’d hope for Sony to finally make some of them, but it’s more likely they’d just announce another bunch of 35mm and 50mm’s, let’s say f/1.7 and f/2.3 this time.

      1. It’s hard not to be, really. I used to advertize Sony to all and everybody because they were so great with A77 etc., and was very much looking forward to going Sony FF.

Now, for some reason at some point they just forgot about reportage photography, like it doesn’t exist or nobody does it anymore. It’s the only genre that really intrests me. When Russian reviewers do another A7x, they always say ‘it’s a great camera for unhurried photography, probably best in class for any genre… other than maybe reportage’.

So when on Earth are the reportage-suited bodies and lenses are finally coming?! Even D610 is so much more suitable for that than A7RII: big body, big battery, much better AF in all tests, weather-sealing, faster 24Mp files, availibility of f/2.8 zooms for roughly same price as f/4 for FE etc.. and Sony sensor!!

Why can’t Sony make the same thing with EVF? I want to be excited about Sony again, not facepalm every time they announce something

        1. Like I said reportage photography is dead. You can thank the common folks using their camera phone that’s at the scene as it happens.

There is still another year until their next 4 year, FF DSLR cycle. You can complain then when it’s not out.

          1. You’re talking about news agencies and such. IDK if their business is dying, not really interested… I just like making beautiful photo reports from various events for myself, my friends and participants. It’s a hobby and it can’t ‘die’, as far as I enjoy doing it and people want good quality photo reports.
Photos by good photographers with proper equipment of course are very different from those captured casually with smartphones. Especially true for things like fire shows, night clubs and so on.
I don’t know why you refer to people ‘at the scene as it happens’. Photogaphers are also at the scene, how else could they make a report about the event?
It’s a creative activity, to show something from your perspective, social activity and such, not business.
That’s why enjoyment is important, otherwise I’d just pick a Nikon, they’re much better ‘workhorses’ than what Sony currently produces.

          2. Okay, you need to say walk around or event photography instead of reportage.

By the time photographers and reporters come, the climax has ended and no photos/footage is captured. They arrive most likely reporting the aftermath.

  3. That I am still waiting form more confirmation. As I messed so much up with that because of SOny’s delay that I want to be 100% sure. And at least get a proper leak!

  4. I’m guessing the 21mm is F4, just to keep size small. The tele zoom I hope is a 70-400mm or 100-400mm F5.6 constant, with min focus distance 1.0m like the Canon 100-400L.

    1. Possibly because the Loxia line is full frame video friendly and cinema lenses tend to not go that wide to avoid distortion.

    2. Loxia and Batis line is completely different line ups for completely different use, there is no reason why a Batis customer would be pleased with a Loxia lens. Most probably both will exist side by side in the Zeiss lineup

  5. I hope the telephoto zoom will be 70-300 f/4.5-6.3 and relatively small with similar build to the 28-70. Sony desperately needs more entry level/budget FE lenses. Then they should bring out an entry level a6 with no EVF. I also hope the 24-70 GM won’t be the big f/2.8 premium zoom, but will instead be a collapsible kit lens with power zoom like the SEL1650P and included in the cheapest kits. Would be good to see Sony targeting other markets besides the enthusiast/premium market with their current over the top pricing.

    1. I agree about the entry level lenses. However, based on the G rating of the 24-70 I highly suspect it is a f2.8 zoom and definately not a variable aperture PZ lens.

        1. There is a market for it and it’s been successful in the past. Sony makes cameras for whatever makes them money, they don’t make lenses just for you.

          1. Wow, thanks Jesse, I didn’t realise that. Sorry for offering my opinion, which I very stupidly didn’t know everybody would not share. I’m glad you cleared that up.

        1. Yes, but they have a constant aperture. There is already a constant f4 24-70, so f2.8 is obvious. And otherwise, if the 24-70 GM is a PZ lens, it should have the PZ abbreviation in the name.

          1. While I agree, there is something that will be different about this ‘GM’ lens and I’m not entirely convinced it is a ‘G’ lens just because there is a ‘G’ there. While It could be a new line of super premium lenses (G stands for Gold, this could be Gold Master… Maybe…), it could also be an ultra small pancake style zoom, who knows!

          2. im guessing the M is for macro, it might have 1/3rd magnification or around that, maybe upto .5. but think you only need about a 3rd to label a lens with “macro”

          3. That would make sense I guess, maybe. That would be a nice addition and would certainly make me thing twice.

  6. I don’t buy another midrange zoom coming before a number of other lenses – most notably a longer zoom and a few more primes. There’s already two lenses covering that FL with the 28-70 and existing 24-70. This mythical “GM” registration in Russia doesn’t mean anything, companies register stuff all the time that never see the light of day. Sony will fill other gaps in the FE lens lineup before introducing another standard zoom. It’ll probably come around the same time the curved sensor RX2 and A99II drop. Yes that’s sarcasm.

    1. But there isn’t an f/2.8 version, which this lens is rumoured to be. Many see 24-70/2.8 as a bread and butter lens for any full frame system.

      1. 70-200/2.8 is more important in my opinion. The Batis lenses and 35+55 cover the rest. But that’s just my opinion. My 70-200/2.8 is needing replacement. Hope Sony is fast, as I would like to have it for FE-mount instead of F-mount..

      2. I would argue a 24-70/2.8 zoom isn’t the bread and butter of any system, a 70-200 seems more like the go-to “pro” zoom. Looking at Amazon’s sales rankings, the 70-200’s and 24-105 are far ahead of the 24-70 – which isn’t in the top 100. The 16-35 and 24-7/4’s are also selling better. Most of the top 50 (outside of cheap APS_c zooms) are 35/50/85 primes, UWA’s and longer zooms.

        I’m an A7rII user, but I’m not drinking the 24-70 GM kool-aid. Just my opinion. We’ll see….

        Cheers

    2. I think Sony is really under pressure since many professionals are using the A7 cameras and keep asking for f2.8 zooms. They will come.

      1. People keep trumpeting how “pro’s need 2.8 zooms” yet they make up a small percentage of camera sales and arguably an even smaller percentage of E-mount sales since Sony’s flash system is not nearly as good as CaNikon’s, nor is their non-existent support system for loaners and repairs, along with a native lens lineup that is far from comprehensive and focusing in low light that’s not as good as any pro level DSLR. I would say most of that is more important to many pros than one zoom lens.

Besides, you can use the A-mount 2.8’s with the LAEA3 on the A7rII and get the full array of AF features. They won’t be any smaller in E-mount, making FE versions redundant.

        YMMV

          1. There are no E > A-mount comparable’s with zooms. The A-mount lenses are F/2.8 and the E-mount’s are F/4, so all of them will be smaller than the A-mount. Larger aperture = more glass = bigger lens.

            Cheers

          2. You are right, but I think you can agree that A -mount lenses have about the same size than Canon or Nikon lenses.
So you can compare Sony FE 70-200 f4 with Canon and Nikon 70-200 f4.

And you see, all three lenses are about same size and weight, but for E-mount you don’t need the additional adapter, saving about 1 inch of length.

This is actually the reason I believe native e-mount lenses can made smaller than a-mount lenses + adapter.

      1. What does Sony make that’s not “mass production,” still tells us nothing.

Just where in Sony’s history have you seen any lens get replaced less than 2 years after first introduced? Most refreshes take 5 or 6 years, if not more. The Fe 24-70 was released in the fall of 2013, its replacement is years away.

        1. Who said the 2.8 was a replacement to the 4? They co-exist with other brands.

I’m more interested in it reducing the heavy distortion and murky details of the f4 than being a stop larger.

  7. I hope the Loxia will be a 21mmf2.8 since there’s already the amazing FE 16-35mmf4. Also a 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 would fill a nice gap for wildlife shooters. I hope all future primes would come with an iris ring like the Distagon 35mmf1.4
As for APS-C that system is lacking a 16mmf1.8 and a 16-50mmf2.8 an additional 55-300mm would be appreciated as well. Finally I wouldn’t mind being surprised, let’s see what Sony brings to the table, as all the eyes are on this system right now, they have to deliver.

      1. Wel if A6000 II gets the same or better AF than A7R II (pretty likely) you will be able to use the existing A-Mount, which given that neither would be particularly small would probably be a good value choice.

  8. Hello dear sony fans, I would be very interested by an hybrid biogon/Ultron like 1.8/21mm from Voigtlander … Also the filter thread being homogenous in the loxia line, the old biogon are 46mm, the ultron 1.8 56mm… What about a f2/21mm with 52mm filters ??? That would be very very nice !!!

    1. 21mm F2 with 52mm filter? That’s a nice dream.
The CV 21mm F1.8 is surprisingly small and cheap, but don’t expect Zeiss to do any better; they are not known for their small designs.

  9. I suspect that the 24-70 GM lens is something entirely new, such as a
high end (G) f2.8 lens with selectable real manual focus coupling (M).

          1. No one took any photos of birds, sports or such before the crippled APS-C format was invented. Gladly now we all now how sports and birds look like.

          2. Would you rather have a 4 fps, larger, heavier, and less mpx camera, than a 11 fps, smaller, lighter and higher mpx camera, when taking pictures of birds?

          3. I would rather have a (little) larger, heavier, more mpx anf fast enough camera if I choose to shoot anything fast flying, sir. I’ve been there (in APS-C land) with old Dimage 5D. I didn’t like the experience at all. It didn’t have the fps nor AF accuracy due to technology immaturity. But the experience was overall scary for me compared to old film SLRs. I’m rather staying in FF area even for occasional birds shots (tamed birds of prey:).
I’m biased against APS-C as it was created as crippeld format out of necessity. The crop factor nor the FPS speed are no consideration for me as the same or more can be achiaved with even smaller formats.
But this whole thread was started as simple joke and ended like this! This is what you made me to do. And this is scary man, this is really scary.

          4. I’m only trying to figure out what kind of camera that would be. An easy example would be the 7d mk2 vs the 5d mk3. 7d is faster, lighter, cheaper, tougher. But the most important part. When using a 400mm on the 5d you get a 400mm 22mpx image, but using the same lens on the 7d would give you a 640mm 20mpx image. (you would not be able to crop the 5d image and get the same mpx)

          5. Hey, I’m not going to argue this. I’m not a friend of reason today. I don’t shoot birds.
Just, why to stop at APS-C? Why not going for M3/4 or 1″ or even smaller? It gives you even more crop on FF lens and still changes no optical characteristics of the original focal length (read like this is wrong). Yeah, similar resolution on both sensor sizes makes the smaller one appear to have bigger “magnification”. Well if you crop the film a lot you get the same. I fail to see the advantage in this approach in general. I believe APS-C perishes in few years unless Fuji finds a reason for it’s existence. It was created out of necessity as an intermediate solution. Not as a new system.
But really, my first post was supposed to be the half-joke only…

  10. Hello everybody,

    Simple question.

It seems like one of the best way to shoot 4k on the a7rII is by using a speedbooster to adapt Canon/Nikon lenses, to have a full pixel read out, and keep the whole lens field of view while shooting on s35 mode.

But how about with E-mount lenses like Loxia etc..how can we used them, without a crop in s35 mode ?

Sorry if it sounds like a silly question, i’m kind of new on the subject.

  11. Looking at price/performance it’s becoming clear that many will stick to adapting. Modern lenses are really getting out of hand.

    1. A 200-400 f4 would be awesome… either the weight around my neck, or the loss to my wallet, would certainly make me say, “Awww…”!

          1. depends on how fast it goes from f/4… But it sounds like a great lens, altough i think it will make them sell a bit less of the 70-200 f/4.

  12. FE GM = FE G lens with Macro
Loxia 21 sounds nice, though still waiting for an 85, mind you I’m quite happy with my Leica R set( 28/2.8, 60 Macro, 100 Macro, 180/3.4 APO, + CV15III G45/2, & M 90 APO Asph

    1. I too had Leica R lenses. Sold them and am happy with my Loxia now. Both are great, but really enjoying the convenience and compactness of the native Loxias. GM does sound like it could be macro. Hoping it has a true manual focus more and aperture ring / control too.

  13. how about any info on when zeiss will restock batis inventory? ordered batis 25mm over a month ago and still nothing. and will not pay $900 over sticker on amazon market places

  14. Your rumors are all wrong lately. You also told us there would be no A7SII. It looks like your sources are playing with your head.

    1. It is Sony themselves who give the information and run this site… to keep the hype real.. They are all “playing” us 🙂

  15. That’s good news, but I wish they would come out with a wider Loxia for astrophotography. For now the Rokinon 14mm F2.8 will do.

      1. I hope you are right, and that it means the current f4 will drop a little in price. I want it, but can’t defend using that kind of money in an f4 zoom…

    1. Define “compact”.. every FF 24-70/f2.8 on the market is 790-900 g and 111-132mm in length, and takes a 77-82mm filter. You can’t have a 2.8 (or faster) zoom in a compact format. It’s physics. You need lots of glass to gather light where there isn’t much available.

Those who complain about the 24-70/f4 FE not being fast enough for the $$$$ need to understand that for its focal length it is *very* compact at 434 g, 94.5mm and a 67mm thread. The average f2.8 weighs around twice as much, is a full 3cm longer and the filters are proportionately more expensive. And the Zony is 170G lighter and 10mm narrower than the Canon 24-70/f4 L (and yes, about $200 more expensive). The Canon might be a better “value”, but the comparison is apples to oranges. As a match for the a7 series the FE2470f4Z is a perfect balance. For me, getting one extra stop over the f4 isn’t worth it. I’d rather shoot at ISO 200 than add another pound to the front of my camera.
