UDPATED POST: I got two anonymous sources sending me two different A6100 info. So either both or one of them is wrong, or we have two different cameras coming:
Source_1:
Sony A6000 successor will be announced on September 11. A6100 will support [shoplink 40116 ebay]UHS-II SD cards[/shoplink] with a maximum write speed of 173 MB/s. It will have a new 24 megapixel sensor with 15% better ISO performance. There won’t be 4K video recording capability. There won’t be a silver version anymore, only black.
Source_2:
just saw your latest post and want to say that a6100 or a6000II will have 4K 100mbps but no full readout like a7rII s35 mode. 32mp but not 24mp BSI sensor, and yes with 15% better noise performance. price is unknown yet. It will also have a larger T* viewfinder 0.75x
I still have no 100% confirmation from trusted sources that the camera will be announced on Sept. 11. All I know from them is that indeed the A6xxx is coming within the September/October timeframe. No info yet on the A7sII announcement timeframe…
But there are some HIGHLY exciting products still to come…more on that on next rumors…

So maybe they have made the jump directly to 6K video? Can’t see Sony releasing any more cameras without 4K at this point in the tech race.
Maybe they couldn’t get the overheating problems solved and didn’t want to wait any longer. Anyways, no 4K sounds disappointing
Is 173 Mb/s an 8k write speed? Now that would be “shocking”.
There is also very little need for the fast SD cards unless it is for shooting 4k or higher (yes you could also do slow mo or a fast still burst). If it doesn’t come with 4k, I bet that is because of problems implementing, not for lack of trying to include the feature.
At very high write speeds you can have longer bursts and faster buffer clear times. This is very important to some (me).
It will have for sure 6K video!
But without sound and only 12 frames per second 🙂
Surely this is a copy and paste…?
Sept 1 was 8 days ago and it was not a Friday.
Typo – he says 11 in the body.
I stand corrected…
…said the man in the orthopaedic shoes.
hahahaha!
Funny…I had to wear insoles for a foot problem I had for a while.
I did stand corrected then and I am now standing correctly every day!
173Mb/sec card and no 4K? That is how you know it’s a fake. Moreover, all Sony cameras now have 4K sgtarting from rx100m4 and rx10ii ending with a7rII. Oh yeah, no silver version now – I forgot about this groundbreaking news! Oh, for sure – that is the major difference – only black version!!!
This should be SR1. No way it won’t have 4K recording. It needs to have it to keep up with Panasonic G7/GX8/GH4 and Samsung NX1/NX500. Sony is always in the lead with tech, why would it be any different now?
If there is an A7000 coming as well, it is entirely possible an A6100 won’t have 4K.
Still a big fail, as G7 and NX500 are allready available, affordable and offer 4K.
But my feeling tells me you are right, and Sony will offer 4K in a different APS-C camera for +2000$ for the body.
Sony won’t be releasing two types of enthusiast APS-C level cameras. There is only room for 1. Their concentration is heavily on FF. Either Sony will release an a6100 or a7000.
A6100 would just be a warm up of the A6000, which is a mid range camera not an enthusiast.
Sony released 2 FF cameras at the same time when 90% of all SAR readers believed that a FF-mirrorless is technically not possible.
A7R II has sensor tech that leads in some ways, but the features are still MEH, IMO. Overheating during 4K recording is not very impressive, as is the banding phenomenon in raw stills and the slow continuous shooting. Sony zooms are not overly impressive either. Panasonic still has a solid lock on video features (unlimited 4K recording, V-log) and has comparable or better AF capability. Sony sensor tech is the only area I really see them leading at this point.
If you are just interested in 4K and are satisfied with the flexibility of the Panasonic, sure. However, overall, the a7rII is simply the better camera.
Yeah. Sounds fishy. Sony has internal 4K in most of their new cameras, so it would be odd to omit it in their top crop E-mount camera.

Typo allert…should be Septmber 11
If they are announcing at IBC, a broadcasting conference, there is no way they wont have 4K.
Canikon as well as Sony focus their stands their on Video not stills, no way they will have a cam limited to 1080p.
This cannot possibly be the super hyped all new apsc bhi rgbw , worlds fastest af, super high iso, great dynamic range camera we have heard so much about could it ?
Canon fans will have fun talking about this one.
Why, because Canon has great mirrorless products that compete well with even the “old” A6000?
Not only mirrorless, they dont have anything below $1000 to compete with $450 a6000.
Canon’s best “mirrorless” is actually not mirrorless, it is the SL1 and it can be had for under $300 now. I had one for a long time and it served as a great second cam (way better than the M). Fantastic size, just as light as a “mirrorless” with a better grip than most. …but now its due for an update just like the still excellent a6000.
Only that you have to be certifiably insane to suggest that the SL1 can compete against the A6000.
I do a lot of extreme location photography. The sl1 was a great choice climbing a glacier. Light weight, reliable autofocus, good lens choices that could be shared with a 6d, and electronic viewfinders still doesn’t work well on a glacier in full sun or hiking at midnight for an alpine start. So in practice, yes. Specs, no. I sold the SL1 in hopes that the a7000 would be its replacement. someday…
Interesting. I largely prefer the EVF for the same situations. COuld you elaborate?
Not Canon, but other people just consider the Sony cameras when they are, without doubt, better in every spec possible, while being cheaper.
So you think that Canon can’t compete
Nikola here supports you in that opinion
But on the Canon blogs they all seem to think Sony can’t do anything but make good sensors
Their cameras suck
Thier support sucks
Reliability sucks
Mirrorless are not real pro cameras.
Two very differrent opinions…and without taking sides …Canon certainly has the sales and pro support to back up thier version.
Sony makes the best sensors, and has the best sensor tech.
But everything else, especially lens system goes to Canon…
And before you go braging about Sony Zies lenses check out Canon’s
Blue Spectrum Diffraction Optics…that is now beginning to find its way into new Canon lenses.
For a Sony fan to dismiss Canon as no real competition is ludicrous.
“For a Sony fan to dismiss Canon as no real competition is ludicrous.” – I didn’t.
“Blue Spectrum *Refractive* Optics” – but it seems you’re a sucker for marketing. Do you believe everything Canon says?
If you don’t want to belive the tch, check the specs yourself..
The new 35mm lens has Blue Spectrum Diffraction Optics, the old one does no….compare the mtf charts.
The new 85mm will be next.
I am anxiose to see this in long lenses.
Basically a ble diffracting organic glasselment is part of a single grop apochromatic triplet.
While this has similar advantages to Nikons Phase Fresnel technology it does not suffer from the serious disadvantage of increased lens flair associated with the fresnel surface.
On the Canon sites many still insist Canon sensors are better than Sony…but many belive that Sony sensors are better in some ways, but things like dynamic range are overated because all sensors are really very good.
I believe Sony does make the best sensors, and that is important…..but Canon and even Nikon do other things better.
Can Sony build a sensor so much better than Canon that everything else does not matter, and if the can…can they sustain the sensor gap?????
That we will have to see.
Why has Sony put all thier hopes on mirrorless….because mirrorless cameras rely a lot more on just being a good sensor in a simple body, and Sony can do that.
The DSLR depends a lot more on the camera quality and Sony Cannot compete well in camera quality because they are not a Camera company.
Soon all cameras will transition to mirrorless….when that happens the competition will be fierce.
I do not know what Canon will do next….but just for fun suppose they introduced a ff mirrorless with 120mp still and 60fps 8k video
They claim that 78 of thier existing lenses are suitable for 8k video and 60 of thier existing lenses are suitable for 120mp.
Furthermore suppose they begin updating thier entire lens line with Blue Spectrum Diffraction Optics to be ready for the 250mp version to come out next.
Your discussion raises a good point – after going down the mirrorless path 4 years ago, changing from a DSLR, I find myself more and more looking at DSLR lenses with envy.
There’s a lot of Canon sensor bashing, but the reality is that only in some circumstances are advantages like DR going to make a big difference. On holiday in the Alps recently I saw a few people with great Canon optics, including a couple of 5DIII’s with 11-24 lenses, and I was thinking ‘damn you’re going to get some nice photos’.
They lugged that beast of a lens in the Alps?
Whether Canon can or cannot compete (or Nikon for that matter) is difficult to say. Both have already entered the mirrorless market, but some people believe that they weren’t “serious” with their current offerings. So, the question is whether one thinks they can do better or not (at this point, I am seriously starting to doubt it, given the rather weak offerings – EOS-M, Nikon 1, Nikon Df, Powershot G etc.). However, that does not make them not competitive, as they can simply churn out the same old camera and sell it to all the gullible people or the ones who are simply heavily invested in their respective systems. That is the comfort of having build market and mind share (for how long though?).
Why do you care about what commenters on Canon blogs say? Does it affect your ability to use a Sony camera to take quality photos.
It is quite natural in the world of electronics for there to be iterative spec bump updates (particularly on the more consumer-oriented releases) and overhaul releases in which there is a greater jump in specs.
I will use the best camera and lenses for my needs regardless of who makes them.
I follow and even post on ther sites too.
Cannon bloggers consider me a Sony fan, but I am not committef to anyones products…and I have both good and bad stuff to say about all of them.
Now that E mount bodies work better with Canon and Nikon lenses it is much easier to mix systems.
Currently I use A mount, a7rii, and 90mm fe macro.
If Canon comes out with 120mp and Sony does not….I do expect Sony will match Canon though….I would not hesitate to get a Canon camera and lens…when the 5dsr came out I considered buying it plus a 150-600 sigma sport lens….but there were many things I did not like about it…and when I rented it I did not like it at all.
So I follow other camera rumor blogs as well as this one.
If a new long lens that meets my needs better than what I now use…Tamron 150-600 I will get it…I still consider the sigma sport in Canon or Nikon mount but will wait to see what new stuff comes out
Top on my wishlist is 300-600mm f 4.8 or 5.0 or 5.6 with built in 150mm barrell extender for close up/ macro mode and drop in 1.8x matched teleconverter
This would be something Canon could do very well if Sony doesn’t. .
I’ve read that post nearly word-for-word from you previously but it did not really answer the question. You just wrote that you are agnostic but you think commenters / supporters of other brands need to be impressed / silenced by Sony releases. Let idiots mock iterative, profitable products like the a6000 series or the digital rebel (which has made Canon much more money than the 1D series).
Once again you seem compeled to interpret my comments and tell everyone what they really mean.
Get this through your head…you do not determine what I mean…I mean what I say I mean, not what you say I mean…and people do not need you to translate my comments into Christopher-eze for them.
Again you are wrong. I am not interpreting what you are saying, I am subtly pointing out that what you are saying is utterly dumb and mostly irrelevant.
Instead of answering a simple question you regurgitated the same old BS you have copied-and-pasted many times over (i.e. 300-600mm blah blah blah).
I asked you about why you care what Canon / Nikon commenters believe or say on their forums. It was a highly specific question. I did not ask which cameras or lenses do you use, will you use, do you dislike, do you wish existed (but never will), or about which other sites you visit. The AF module in your brain is slower than a first gen SLT in -4 EV light – stop hunting and focus.
You are interpreting what I am saying and as usual being a total a$$.
This whole discussion where you need to tell me what I think feel and mean is ludicrous
If you are so intent on interpretting how I feel …perhaps you might start with how I feel about your comments..!!!!
You trll people what you think and I will tell people what I think
Are you capable of understanding tjat, or will you give is another Christopher-eze translation of what I am saying.
Translate this

I do not tell people what you think, I have no clue what is going on there.
I do cite your previous comments and provide the source and citation.
Now you beg the question, if you do not want people to read your comments, why are you posting them publicly in online discussions?
Read Silently

Don’t spoil the story for everyone else.
Good news to me if there is no 4K since I can simply buy a6000 at a much deeper discount rate once a6100 launched to the market
Exactly! I’m just holding out on the A6000 purchase because of the 4K. What’s the point of the A6100 since the 6000 is already good on both of the mentioned and supposedly upgrade? Damn, no one else releasing cameras with 4K besides Panasonic and their ugly ass camera bodies?
This is what I am thinking. Buy an A6000 so I have a better camera than the NEX-6 to go with my lenses, then change to a new primary system because I’m sick of waiting for Sony to make another camera that matches the promise of the NEX-7.
I think A7S II will be announced in November/December.. but the A99 II (or the New FF A-mount whatever they will call it) MUST be coming very soon.. IMO
If it is coming at all…
it is not coming .. it’s shocking.. remember that
There will be no new A mount camera.
Sony no longer manufactures any A mount cameras.
When exisiting inventor is gone they will all be no longer available.
Some old A mount lenses will continue to be manufactured ….with minor upgrades….to support A mount users and for use on E mount with adapters.
Because of the longer flange distance A mount lensss are shorter that an identical E mount would be, and since they do not require stepper motors, tiny focus elements, and image stabilization it is much more economical to continue to produce a few…for now….especially for people interested in budget lenses.
Obviously you are an angry A-mount user, I don’t blame you but if Sony announces a new FF A-mount camera this month what will you say ?
all your assumptions of A-mount lenses will be broken down.
I’m %100 sure that there will be a new A-mount camera coming this month (maybe in a separate day .. away from all camera releases to be in better focus of media)
He switched to e-mount after to complaining about it for 3 years so maybe he now prefers that no new a-mount cameras be released to avoid buyers remorse.
You are 100% sure there will be a new A mount camera coming this month
So when this month is over and there is no new A mount camera will you agree no more A mount camera is coming and publicly post Barry was rite ?
Do you crave nothing but ego boosts?
I crave higher resolution too.
We know. We really do know.
Deal my friend , I will also sell my whole A-mount gear and buy Canon
I am guessing (hoping) that this is just a revision of the A6000 and that there is an A7000 still to come? Hoping for much improved backlit sensor and weather sealing. Please Sony.
That’s what I thought to when I read the news. 15% better ISO seems meh for a BSI sensor. Also no 4K wouldn’t explain 9 months delay for the release.
Which delay? Sony never never mentioned the introduction of an A6100 before.
Just rumors were wrong, nothing else.
Depends. How many stops is 15%?
It’s about 1/6 of a stop, so meh. On the other hand having a full stop advantage would be a huuuge deal! On average the ISO performance has increased only by like 2 stops in the last 10 years. So 1/6 doesn’t sound that bad, if you look at it that way.
It’s enough to make it look a lot better in the DXO ISO test but only a marginal improvement in the real world. Still 15% is significant and about what can be expected considering the current state of sensor development.
If it has the improved shadow recovery of the RX100 IV, then it will make a big difference.
I need the silent shutter mode plus IBIS else I might be gone to Olympus OMD E5 II or E10 II.
Where is the so long prommised and so long hoped for a7000 ?
Sony Plesse give US a high end apsc camera that is a true nex7 succesor.
Bummer, I was expecting IBIS, tri-navi and higher end specs (like 4k and ospdaf from A7rII)…
I guess I’ll go for the A7II then.
Interesting, but what we’ve seen here doesn’t offer much of a compelling reason to change from the A6000.. unless the price of the A6100 will remain low and this is simply a small refresh to keep the APS-C wheel spinning.
I’m not going Sony Full Frame because their lenses are far too expensive, so the longer I wait for Sony to do something interesting at APS-C the more I look at Fuji, Pentax, Samsung…….
I feel I need to mention, that Samsung, contrary to the previous years, didn’t even show any cameras at IFA this year, even though they have some relatively recent updates in their line up. That doesn’t exactly raise the confidence in their commitment to the camera business.
Interesting. I wonder if they are exiting? I was hoping to see an NX mini 2 and some new mini lenses.
I’m wondering about their reasoning as well. I mean the NX1 and NX500 are pretty good cameras and they announced some good lenses recently. So maybe the sales weren’t where they expected them to be and they are changing their strategy somewhat.
Well, if they do exit, then get ready for fire sales on the NX1. I am ready for that to start now!
I am wondering where they are selling. Maybe in China?
Their profit went down this year, that means they don’t have much confidence to spend like before.
Out of curiosity, what do you miss with Sony?
Is there a better mirrorless ILC right now than the A6000? I don’t think so. But – a good reason to look elsewhere is lens selection. I will not be going FF either – and I certainly do not want to bolt a FF lens on my aps-c bodies.
For APS-C, I would argue that Fuji has a far better lens lineup. So yes, there is a better APS-C SYSTEM than the A6000 plus its lenses.
FWIW, I’m an A6000 owner.
I said nothing about system. If you are worried about system then get m4/3. By far best system. I was talking about best body. Which I believe the A6000 holds that title. Too bad Sony does not support aps-c with lenses.
I don’t see the good of having just a good body. For best results, we need the trifecta of sensor, glass, and development (post processing software). With Sony, we get 2.5 – sensors and excellent PP with Capture One Pro. I am not at all impressed with m43 – the sensors are tiny and the glass doesn’t seem particularly better than Fuji.
Never say never.
I think that Sony has a BIG problem: Marketing
And in support. But great tech
True. But at the moment I still don’t want to switch to Sony. They Continue to release new aborted cameras. An High-end camera cannot have a 1 year life.
And because of this There isn’t a camera that I want to buy because no one of the A7 cameras are totally suitable for videomakers :/
and in quality management….
Good news. Those specs mean it should cost WAY less than US$1K.
A great A6000 update. Now where’s the A7000? Or better yet, the A5 FF in an A6000 style body
No not better. An A5 would be something very different than an A7000. The first one would be a nerfed A7, functionality wise, and the latter one a semi pro with BSI sensor, super fast AF and hopefully upgraded ergonomics. Also to be honest the A7 is so cheap right now, there is really not place for an A5.
But the A7 is old and as we all know there were many quirks with the first generation models, they could release a new A5 at the price of the old A7 with many problems fixed and an even more compact body. It’s not very economical for Sony to release a body that doesn’t share a design with an old but it could be what happens when Sony discontinues the A7.
I think it’s too early for them to discontinue the A7 when they can just keep selling it as an entry level FF. Maybe they will do so when the A7III is released and they actually have an A5 on the horizon.
Also there have been to many rumors regarding a high level APS-C camera for there not to be an A7000ish camera to be announced relatively soon.
mhm.. It seems a fake.. it seems like some prankster read one of my old post:
disqus.com/home/discussion/saradmin/sr3_sony_a6xxxa7xxxx_has_a_new_backlit_sensor_and_rgbw_pixel_array/#comment-2221028944
All of you that worry. There might be two cameras A7000 and A6100. It’s IBC after all .. (launch event). No one there is interested useless waste of planetary resources like A5000.
Is it possible that they announce the A9, the famous 54MP model?
I remember a SR4 rumor of last year where you said that a second “higher MP camera” would have come a couple of months after the 40Mp model
Sony probable made a prototype a99ii and then decided to never produce it.
Say goodbye to A mount.
If this body would materialize, that would hit you, wouldn’t it?
I actually got the new A7RmkII and I guarantee it’s a completely new beast in IQ, colours and effective resolution. It DO is a hell of a camera even with high ISO performance (I rarely use it, but at 3200ISO it seems to see the old A7R at 400-800 ISO)
so… Yes, if Sony launches a 54Mp model this year or next year, I’d love to join it. If they make a compact medium format, I’d love it too but it’s gonna be a 6000€ camera
Looks like this is an update, like the RX100 IV and the RX10 II – to get the stacked CMOS sensors into the bodies. Probably won’t see a lot of IQ difference – but maybe faster focus? And maybe higher frame rates. But – no 4K? That is strange, I think the rumor could be wrong – it must have 4k.
If you read the interviews with Sony execs, they are big on 4K and slow motion. Even if there is a crappy implementation, they will make sure that the new body has both of those features. This is great for new users, but not particularly compelling as an upgrade from the A6000.
If I was running the APS-C camera business, my focus would be on grabbing customers from hordes of Canon and Nikon sheep buying their $500-$1500 bodies with kit lenses. The secondary goal would be to pick up customers looking at Fuji and m43s. 4K and slow motion are obvious selling points. I would make the body bigger (a lot bigger) because that would make the camera look “more serious”
To resonate with the higher end ($1000+) of the target market, I’d get an 18-150mm zoom built instead of doing a 2.8-4 zoom. Only to get some focal length range to match up with what Nikon has in the D5000 series kit lenses. This is completely different than what I’d want as an enthusiast.
Also if I was running the business, any improvement on sensor quality would just be a side effect of getting 4K and slow motion. So trying to get A6000 customers to upgrade probably wouldn’t even be in my business case! Again, as an A6000 owner and enthusiast, I would like Sony to give me a reason to upgrade, but I don’t think Sony has a good business case to do that.
Unfortunately, taking market share doesn’t necessarily speak to the higher end of the market, which would probably be most of those on this forum with A6000s who own multiple lenses, including several primes and high quality zooms. I mean, at this point, the fact that Sony sensors run circles around Canon sensors for APS-Cs is meaningless towards gaining ADDITIONAL marketshare. I recently shot some architecture with the NEX-F3 and the 16-70 and when I compared my shots with someone who shot the same scenes with a Canon Rebel and kit lens, it was laughable. The Sony photos had so much more dynamic range and sharpness and nicer colors, it was like we were not even shooting with the same class of camera.
So with a little luck on Friday we will get announcements for:
– A6100 with BSI sensor
– f/2.8-4 zoom lens for that A6100
– Sony Zeiss FE 85/1.4
– Zeiss Loxia 21/2.8
– New family of Zeiss Cine lenses for FE.
Let’s see.
“- Sony Zeiss FE 85/1.4”
I bet this will not happen – this would disappoint customers heavily!
With the Batis 1.8 just coming out at a good price (for such a lens) I doubt we will see that 1.4. Didnt even make the 50mm a 1.4 much less the 85mm imho
” Sony will shock everyone with thier new creation”
If this is thier new creation they certainly will shock everyone.
24mp, 15% better iso…
Why would anyone upgrade to such a camera…???
Why would anyone choosing a new camera choose this…???
It will shock everyone because it’s an A99II
Well, it’d still be a compelling upgrade for those using a NEX-6, a5000, etc. But yeah, it wouldn’t make me drop my a6000 to get one.
Well, lets wait and see what it is. It may have some features that will make you drop your A6000. Lets see.
Since I don’t really do video (other than the occasional random recording of my kids), really the only thing that would make me consider an upgrade now is the 5-axis IBIS. If it has that, I might have to start budgeting…
Did you meant to write this quote in relation to the new video camera? This post does not mention Sony shocking people with the 6100 update.
“Don’t know it he refers to the one camcorder I shared the specs about or a second new product”
The quote is from another post and in that context the admin makes it clear he is referring to a full frame or super 35mm video camera not an a6100 update.
“Why would anyone upgrade to such a camera…???”
Depends what they’re upgrading from, don’t you think?
“Why would anyone choosing a new camera choose this…???”
Maybe they don’t have a camera; maybe they have only a smartphone; maybe they have only a small sensored compact; maybe they have a DSLR they want to replace with a smaller bodied APS-C model; maybe they want the latest model. Take your pick.
Maybe 24mp and the ISO performance will be perfectly adequate for a lot of people, and maybe they are more concerned with other specs and features rather than raw sensor specs.
That’s too advanced for the comment section.
Maybe the A6100 is just the update of an already good camera.
Maybe there will be additional an A7000 with 28mp BSI-stacked, 15 stops DR sensor. Plus 4K, 16 fps, IBIS, USB3.0, touchscreen, 255 PDAF-points usable on adapted lenses.
Oh boy that sounds like a $1000 USD camera.
Yes – the answer to NX1 and 7D.
Non makes too much sense to me.
Then it is a good sign that it can happen 🙂
Anyway if it falls near D750($1399 grey market), I would still grab D750 for the job. When speed matters, without a f/2.8 zoom lens it is losing the edge (I don’t push ISO over 1600-3200). A camera is a system rather than just a body. If practical issue is not considered, a lot of cameras can be very capable.
Real world difference of BSI’s noise floor is… not a huge step forward when comparing FF sensors to FF sensors. Nikon still has very good noise reduction. Other than that, for an APSC sensor, I doubt BSI would blow any FF sensor out of the water. Nikon’s 1 inch BSI sensor is just such an example.
Good reference. https://www.imaging-resource.com/IMCOMP/COMPS01.HTM
YOU would grab D750.
But maybe there are people that need a high frame-rate for action photography and a very fast autofocus.
Many birders prefer APS-C over FF because most of the pictures have to be cropped anyways.
Again, lens is not discussed. 7D ii offers 10 fps and I know many telephoto Canon lens are both quick and priced friendly. Also, body buffer clearing time and buffer size is not discussed either. These are all critical practical issues. There is a reason why many people are taking 1dx or d4s when shooting birds.
Sony’s 300 and 500 prime is costing 2-6 times of what Nikon 200-500 and 200-400 does. Canon’s 200-400 is about 50% more expensive than Nikon’s 200-400. I am quite price sensitive here, I probably would just stick with Nikon.
42mp ?
42 would be a little too much for my taste.
Source #2 says 32mp, just enough to best the NX1 which is 28mp. Maybe Sony has mastered H265 by now, and wants to go head to head with Samsung.
So many other players are supporting h265. Sony is beating Samsung handily in the camera and sensor wars.
h265 is not a miracle – Sony surely knows how to implement it.
But h265 is not really suitable for any serious post processing – it’s a codec perfectly suitable for dsitributing/displaying contents but not for recording (if you want to do some serious post pro)
My comment was intended to be tongue in cheek. I don’t see a real need for h265 (for the reasons you mentioned). Thus, h265 is languishing, somewhat.
It’s kinda catch-22 for the companies – their engineers know quite well that it is nonsense to incorporate highly compressed 4k inbody recording but the marketing dep. clearly states that it must be done to compete with the others. And nobody tells the normal customer the truth…
I think you’re mistaken. The way Samsung implemented it, might not be ideal for post processing.
But there is nothing that stops Sony from allowing the user superior bitrates over Samsung’s cameras. Especially not if they have a newer and faster memory card bus as the rumour suggests.
Regardless of the bitrates every highly compressed footage is bad in post pro… The recorded footage should be as good as ever possible. And I don’t understand why in the times of cheap, big and very fast SD cards we should use such highly compressed codecs (for recording – for broadcast it’s more than okay!)…
50 Mbit and 100 Mbit is highly compressed?
You must be mistaken about something. The current generation of SD cards are not very fast at all compared to UHS-II.
If this is the case, then you will want a superior codec such as h264, and use it with very high bitrates.
There is no meaning in wanting “as good as possible” if you are against the superior codec at the same time.
100 MB/s are just 12.5 MByte/s… Even slow cards are capable of this write speed – only real cheap ones from your drugstore cannot do this… The SanDisk Extreme Pro is capable of writing up to 95 MBytes/s and is now just as expensive as slow ones the same size two years ago…
The BMD Pocket can record HD Raw on such cards. For recording in Apple ProRes that is both compressed and very suitable for post pro we need write speeds > 80 MByte/s – 4k around 200…300MByte/s.
For good results instead of “big numbers” I always prefer lower resolution to high Kompression!
That sounds like a stupid approach to me.
The first thing you did wrong was rejecting the idea of h265, and pretend that it can’t have higher bitrates.
Secondly, downsampling the resolution in post processing is surely better than crippling your camera sensor during recording.
compared to ProRes422HQ-codec (Atomos Shogun) with 737Mbit, it is highly compressed.
h265 has same video quality as h264, but just half the data size.
Or at equal data size/rate h265 is superior qualitiy over h264.
For best quality go for best codec (h265) with a bitrate as fast as your hardware can do.
no.
28 +/- 4 mp
If Sony releases both an a6100 with 32mp or less AND an a7000 with 42mp ( 38mp or more) then which of us gets to say I told you so ?
Then we should have a beer together 🙂
Agreed. The requirements to upgrade for me from the A6000 would be:
– usable ISO at 6400
– use adapted lenses with on-sensor phase detect AF and the LAEA-3
Just a better EVF, faster FPS, 4K, IBIS, and usable ISO at 3200 (the current A6000 is good until 1600 IMHO) would not be compelling enough for me.
don´t forget… at least 3 lenses who are worth the money.
+ BSI dont forget,
Well with the A6000 priced at $500 or whatever the new discount is, you are right it’d be hard to get someone to bite on purchasing the A6100 over what is already out there and priced so well. They need to have more in it
Plenty of us are still on NEX7 waiting for the successor!
THIS might be the one!
NEX-7 fanboys are among the weirdest fanboys I have seen and trust me, I have seen a LOT of them….
I’ve been switching from Nikon full frame to Sony. I’d love a full featured APS-C camera. Anything that compares well to the D7200 from Nikon will have my attention, and I think the A6000 already beats it 🙂
If …as expected…a Nikon to E mount adapter with pd support becomes available, and the new camera has pd compadability like the a7rii then you can have your new camera and use your old lenses.
I highly endorse the fe 90mm macro lens…so a new camera is always a good excuse to get a new lens.
Maybe not everyone is upgrading from A6000.
Maybe a NEX6/7 owner wanted just to skip A6000 but will go for A6000 successor.
I like what Source_2 said better, but these are all rumors. Sony has really clamped down on unnecessary information leaks. That being said, I hope the cameras are well designed and sell well.
Admin “HIGHLY exciting products still to come…more on that on next rumors…”
When is next rumors? Today or tomorrow? Keep up the great work.
I’m certainly not an engineer, but I’d have thought it would be worth including a crippled 4k setting for marketing, vs omitting it altogether. I’m a very casual videographer, and I rarely record for more than 5 minutes at a time. For basic consumers, people filming their families etc, 4k limited to 5/10 minutes could still be a very appealing feature that would certainly help prop up the marketing, even if a few people are going to complain it isn’t going to make an optimal filming rig..
I’d take 5 minutes of 4k/30 over not having it at all.
4K without the full sensor readout may be better for the average consumer. Seems to be far less rolling shutter when using pixel binning, and it generates less heat as well, allowing longer recording times. On the A7RII there is not too much difference between the 2 modes (Full readout & Pixel Binning).
Tests I have seen clearly show a lot more noise and softer image on the A7RII in full frame 4k mode vs s35.
If Sony doesn’t do full sensor read out (one year?) later than nx1, I’d be disappointed.
Hansi you are wrong. There was an official Sony document showing the A6xxx release timeframe was between April and June. No rumor. that is fact.
IBIS or GTFO 🙂
And Slog for video guys too!
Please no IBIS! Too big. Too expensive.
I agree, IBIS or I don’t see enough to warrant an upgrade from a6k.
Hope it has the high speed capabilities of the RX10ii and the Rx100iV
TRINAVI! Don’t forget TRINAVI!
Plus one.
update 3: it will have a 36mp sensor and 4k with s-log, 150mbit/s and a new color array.
your sources are all idiots…..
*cough* S-Log2 *cough*
Sony zooms not impressive? Really? Where is Panasonics cine / ENG zoom like 28-135mm f4 G? Why can’t Panasonic use IBIS in video?
Source 2 sounds more like my next camera 🙂
I was source 2.
How do you feel about Everlast owning you?
I hope you are right about the a6100
Both sound a bit underwhelming: no IBIS and only 15% better ISO and one source saying no 4k either? Maybe Sony have gone back to holding tek back to protect their expensive gear like Canon and Nikon …just when I thought they were really going for it.
Damnit! I just ordered an A6000 body. What should I do?
Depends if you have another camera to fall back to. The A6100 will probably not be available for 1 or 2 months.
Keep it. I bet you got it for a good price and much cheaper than the new camera will be at launch.
hang on to it, this thing will probably be over $1500 and if they don’t add a new set of aps-c lenses you’ll be adding an other $1500 to get decent glass for it
you really think it’s going to be that much? if it’s true, that would be a major bummer. I’m hoping for at most 799 Body only.
The new model probably won’t be $1500 but the a6000 is still a very good camera. I’ve been using one for almost a year now. It would be nice to have a few other features like 4k recording, IBIS, etc, but I’ve never felt like this camera is lacking anything. When the new model is released the a6000 will still be far from obsolete.
I would be really surprised to see it go for less that 1200 (at launch)
Keep it. The successor might be twice as expensive as a todays discounted A6000. Look at the A7 and Cybershot, the times of affordable Sony cameras will soon be gone. Just my guess. Just my wild guess.
Please Source_2, tell us it has IBIS as well…
4k is a deal breaker for me. I really hope they do include it as source 2 says. Otherwise, i’m looking elsewhere.
“just saw your latest post and want to say that a6100 or a6000II will have 4K 100mbps but no full readout like a7rII s35 mode. 32mp but not 24mp BSI sensor, and yes with 15% better noise performance. price is unknown yet. It will also have a larger T* viewfinder 0.75x”
So he knows the vital specs, but not the name of the camera? Hmmm…
Complete bs, i call on this one.
Agreed.
And on the lower end Sony keeps adding to model number, just like Nikon with the d5000 and its successors. A6100 is next, unless its slotted above with something like A7000.
32MP – or even 24MP – without full readout means Gigantic crop in 4K or quality loss with line skipping, probably the later.
I really think this should be an SR1 or SR2, but to add onto the hype train here is my source….
Source_3:
I just saw you latest post regarding the a6xxx and want to say that both source 1 and 2 are wrong, there will not be an announcement this Friday.
“I got two anonymous sources sending me two different A6100 info. So either both or one of them is wrong, or we have two different cameras coming”
How embarrassing for SAR that they still keep this post up. Any Joe Schmoe could’ve sent this “rumor.” It’s not even worth discussing!
Nice rumors and all, but I’m still missing the robust metal and weather sealed body rumor.
Of course, if the price is low enough, I understand they would omit it.
I believe you’re looking for an XT-2 then.
Admin, any apsc rx model on the horizon?
In my opinion the best upgrade for the a6100/a7000 would be IBIS. The value of 4K as a marketing feature is, IMHO, going to be diminishing as the bleeding edge generation of smartphones already claim to be able to “do” it…people will realize that shaky, compressed looking 4K is not as good as smooth, high bitrate 2K.
4k capability means awesome 1080p as RX10II shown
“people will realize that shaky, compressed looking 4K is not as good as smooth, high bitrate 2K”
Gearheads might realize that, but the message the masses are getting is 4k is better. I don’t think any Sony camera is going to be released without 4k, especially with Panasonic pushing it to the lower end of its lineup with the G7. You can get 4k on a GoPro and an increasing number of phones. 4k is required spec going forward, sad but true.
Really?! This camera will have triple the card write speed as the newly released flagship model? Come on Sony. That’s just silly.
Not really, if you consider that it will need to write 24mp+ files at 10+ FPS. The A7RII has large files but nowhere near the FPS.
Unlike most others the single most important thing to me is that it has an input for an external mic and headset support. If the original a6000 had this I would have got it a long time ago. And it needs to have (a lot) less problems with moire and aliasing compared to the a7ii i already have and am selling because of this. I have no problem stepping down to aps-c. And have no problems with bad rolling shutter performance and no 4k. But 100p slow mo and/or IBIS would have been nice. And good AF-performance in video like the a6000.
Right now unsure about what to do. I cant use the a7ii much longer because of the beyond horrible moire issues so cant wait too long to change. Max a month or two. I have two options…..
1. The new a6000 model as long as it has support for external mic and not too bad moire/aliasing problems. And if it is released soon enough.
2. Buy a used a7s and use this much of the time in aps-c mode (need an all in one zoom like the SEL18-200mm that can focus much closer than the FE 28-240mm). Since the a7s offers no IBIS I also need primes to have OSS and many of the affordable APS-C primes have that.
Does anyone have much exerience with the a7s and APS-C lenses? Is the a7s able to compete with the a6000 when using APS-C lenses in crop mode? On the a7ii the crop mode is so horrible bad (looks like overdone digital zoom with added noise) that your 10 year old mobile phone would look better.
I know the a7rii would be the ideal solution but for now it is just too expensive. And the a7s ii might be too long to wait (and probably cost much more than the first version).
A7s in APS-c mode is better than the A6000 (IMO), plus rolling shutter is greatly reduced compared to FF. Moire and aliasing is almost non-existent. I have the A5100 and its good, but the A7s is sharper with better DR. There are lots of test videos to judge IQ.
Both of Sony’s hotshoe mic modules work with the A6000’s multi shoe and has a headphone jack, but its expensive and a little unbalanced on such a small body. Omitting both on the A6000 (along with XAVC-s) was the main reason I didn’t buy one.
Wait for the announcement to see if anything new surfaces. A new camera probably won’t ship for at least a month or more so there’s that to contend with too.
I love my A7S, but find the center hump EVF super annoying, to the point that I’d immediately drop it if something with a modular or corner EVF came out – and video is not my primary use (but it’s still important for me). An A6xxx/7000 APS-C camera would make an excellent 2nd body and a FF version would make me sell my A7S immediately and buy 2. I don’t really use internal 4K, but having it would mean sales would go up, so by all means… The 2nd biggest problem I have with the A7S besides the EVF position, is rolling shutter. I think it would be good for Sony to fork products from here on out to be either A) high MP, IBIS equipped for stills photography-centric consumers and B) low MP, good thermal design (no IBIS), for stills/video use.
I quite like the EVF on the a7ii (I think it is the same as the a7s). It is almost as good as the one on the GH4 i had before. The one on the GH4 just seemed a bit sharper and reliable for exposure. But I understand you. My LCD is constantly covered with “nose-marks”. And hour after hour pressing it against the eye is straining. A modular one would be nice. But even a bigger and better eyecup would do it for me. I have tried one of the bigger eyecup replacements but it is not very easy to make them work with the sensor that turns on and off the LCD screen. I wish Sony would see the business in selling an official larger eyecup replacement. Supercheap to develop and manifacture. But can be sold for 20$.
I agree that they need to fork products. But remember that IBIS is just as helpful for video as for stills. This was the reason I bought the a7ii instead of the a7s. It is the first camera I have tried that I can use completely handheld and shoot almost tripod-like video even with static objects. Which is a huge time saver. And gives you enormous creative possibilites. So the IBIS on the a7ii is fantastic and will really be missed. But the trade in (video that due to artifacts is largly unusable for anything than close ups) was not worth it. I have seen people manage to film a wide shot with buildings in it without extreme amounts of moire. But that was with third party lenses and probably S-log and 25p. I need a camera to also be able to shoot in 50p and being able to use the video straight out of the camera. I wish they just dropped the whole video-feature on the a7ii and other cameras that have so severe issues of aliasing and moire.
So IBIS on the new a6000 or the a7s ii would be very welcome even for video. If they have to make the body a little bit bigger to help thermal issues doesn’t matter (to me). A body like the GH4 is actually much more comfortable to hold and use. And it still fits in a very very small camera bag. The VG line of cameras also have a nice form factor and I am very tempted by the VG30 or VG900, but the videoes I have seen looks like they are having too much moire issues to be a dedicated video camera (not as bad as the a7ii though).
I shoot 70% of the time on steadicam (the worlds best IBIS, works with all lenses and cameras and no thermal issues hehe) so dont need IBIS for that. But it would be great for the times I have to use it handheld.
Hoodman is coming out with a Sony specific eyecups in a matter of days, have one of pre-order now. They will be selling a normal version and an oversize one for eyeglass users. I purchased a generic one and was not happy with it, hopefully the Hoodman unit does the trick.
THANK YOU for being a steadicam user and recognizing that it takes the right tools to do the job correctly. I do hear you about IBIS in simulating shots on sticks when hurried, but ultimately, if it takes having a set of stick on hand and doing it “right”… I’d rather live without IBIS if it compromises the heat performance as it so drastically seems to do.
On one hand, IBIS will help the “soccer mom” or father shooting family videos get more usable archival family footage. A forked product line seems to make perfect sense here. High MP sensor for photographers that need the resolution for printing, or for joe blow to massively re-crop master shots into portrait shots for Instagram / Facebook. IBIS for serious low-light photography improvements, or for joe blow that doesn’t use tripods ever, or has shakey shots to begin with.
A non-IBIS FF low MP global shutter video pro model is desperately needed. I could buy an FS7, but I don’t want to, I want a consumer camera sized powerhouse for low-key shooting. (just please don’t put the EVF in the middle)
Didnt know about the new hoodman eyecup. Sounds like something I want. Have a generic one myself too but like you not happy about that one. Hope the hoodman version doesnt cover the sensor that turns the LCD on/off so you cant use the LCD at the same time as the eyecup.
I hope the a7s ii will be able to solve the heat issues the a7rii are having with 4k and IBIS at the same time since it probably will have a lot less megapixels to deal with. Global shutter on the other hand I am sadly afraid we wount see for a while in these cameras.
You shouldnt have to get an FS7. People seem to think that the camcorder form factor is so much more ergonomical for video. I have worked with the huge heavy shoulder cameras from Panasonic that comes in at 30000 $ with lens for 20 years, and the smaller versions. So was skeptic about the SLR form factor. But after using both I prefer the SLR form factor. So use my own camera most of the time and almost never use the other cameras anymore unless they are required for multicam/SDI etc.
I’d like a larger FF version of the A6000 myself so the EVF isn’t right in the middle of the camera, but I use the LCD almost exclusively when shooting video so its usually no big deal.
RS is pretty good in crop mode on the A7s. Ironically its the opposite with the A7rII, FF is much better when shooting 4k. But for better low light performance you have to shoot s35. Go figure.
I have watched every video i can find on YouTube and Vimeo on the subject of aps-c on a7s but most of them only talk about the lens coverage in full frame mode. And some are so highly compressed that I have been unsure about how good the detail and noise levels really are. But this was really helpful. Do you happen to know if the a7s also do the distortion correction on the APS-C lenses (first party lenses)? I have found inconclusive information on this issue.
I actually have the K2M adapter from Sony, but the a6000 does strangly not support it. I need to be able to use sennheiser wireless reciever(s) so the mic modules is sadly not an option. Hopefully the new a6000 will fix these issues.
Will wait for the announcement on friday. But really nice to know that the a7s really is a good option for aps-c, and mayby the best option. I need to see some real life tests on moire on a new a6000 model before buying it. I dont trust Sony on this anymore. Will never do the mistake I did with the a7ii again and end up with something that it is impossible to shoot a single landscape shot with.
Thank you. This was really helpful.
Lens corrections are applied with any E-mount lens. I used the 10-18 and it was clearly corrected in video. The Cameralabs, EOSHD and Philip Bloom reviews have crop footage with the A7s IIRC. DVXuser’s Nex board has a few really long A7s threads with samples and screencaps.
Most of the A7S comparisons involve the GH4 instead of the internal FF vs APS-c. But there are crop videos out there.
With lens correction in place it sounds like having two cameras in one. Nice. Will check out the footage in all the reviews tomorrow and read them again. The first time i read them the aps-c mode was probably not the aspect that was most important to me so have probably forgotten about it but seems like time changes priorities. Thanks.
You mean all like 5 at least halfway credible rumored dates and the rumors regarding the A6100 delays coz of heat etc. problems were wrong? Not to mention Sony released 3 fullframe cameras in the same timeframe. I don’t buy it.
There’s no way they will sell an APS-C body for more than 1500€, more likely about 1000€. Also I don’t see casual shooters, who would buy a 600€ camera, using 4K that much, nevermind it missing being a deal breaker.
On that day… Sony will announce a special camera to shoot planes… you know….
In a class of 25 kids it is more likely that two have birthday on the same day than that no two do.
300 / 365 ?
still expect IBIS too :p to really replace nex 7 😀 and better 24 Mpixels than 32 😉 and lossless compression RAW option :p?
Sony’s website: “Watch Everything in 4K”
So yeah, this really need to have 4K, however crappy the implementation. (Though I hope it’s not crappy.)
It will have 4k, no doubt. The question is, full sensor readout or crappy line skipping. Lets hope for the best.
You want full sensor for 5min. or line skipping for 30min.?
9/11 ???
Your picture is a perfect match for this comment ^^
LOL
I know it’s a bit soon, but USB 3.1 type-C would be a great adition, you can make a camera with only one port, It should help for weather sealing.
Any rumour like this with no 4k video is complete BS, why bother posting it.4k is standard in sony line now, even next iphone has 4k from sony sensor.
Too bad if the silver edition is gone. Sony again cutting back on a feature/characteristic some would like to have…
“…15% better ISO performance.”
lol. So that translates into basically … no improvement.
32mp BSI does sound more likely, however, as another 24mp sensor after they just introduced advanced new sensor tech into the A7rII seems too conservative given Sony’s big techno-push these days …and would also explain only a 15% better ISO performance.
I’m still happy with my NEX-5N 🙂
me too, I’ve had it since it first came out and it’s a workhorse. Still going strong. Although I outgrown it slightly as I want to do more advanced things like star trails and such, which I’ve tried using an infrared based intervalometer with varying degrees of success.
you can use the timelapse app from sony playmemories to create star trails. it works very well. and its easier than dragging along an intervalometer.
Get along a wired remote. Set your exposure and lock the shutter release. Then go to sleep or whatever and let the camera keep shooting.
Or as Miggy suggested get the star trails app. But I don’t know how much leeway you have to work with the output.
The wired shutter option is a no frills option but works perfectly and you can shoot in RAW and process later on in either Photoshop or use a free software like star trails. Works great.
what’s amazing with the timelapse app is that you can set it to automatically adjust settings depending on the exposure of your subject (useful if you’re capturing a day to night transition). you can also choose between recording to an image file (jpg or raw) or to a video file.
Me too 🙂
I never upgraded it because it was first followed by two versions with less metal in them and then the A5xxx series were kind of down-graded to the NEX3 series.
I’ve been tempted by the A6000 for the last year, but will wait to see what A6100 looks like first.
The A6000 is way more camera than the 5n. The extra megapixels are way more useful than I thought for starters.
The A5000 is pretty basic, but my impression was that the A5100 was a very capable camera.. but over-priced now that the A6000 has come within $50 of it.
Yes, it definitely is.
A6000 is at least 2 generations newer and of higher class as well.
Its AF system is miles ahead, also has an EVF for a start. Better video, codecs, Bionz X processor and so on.
But since the A6100 is just around the corner, why not wait a few more months.
A5100, downgrade?? it has fast AF and touchscreen which 3 series didn’t have
Give this camera 10bit (either internally, or via HDMI) to 1080P, or even 4K, and SLog3, and watch it dominate the entire market.
C’mon, surely you have more than two people’s anonymous info on this camera?
My bet is on source 3
Highly exciting other products, eh? What a tease. Now, let’s see, A7RII and Batii were just announced. We already have the FE90 and 16-35. A6000 successor is on board. RX1 successor is somewhat interesting. A-mount is nothing exciting, except for the 5 crickets still holding the bag. Camcorders is exciting for video guys, I guess. Ok, that only leaves a Zeiss 24-70/2.8, Batis 21mm, Batis 15mm, Batis 135/2 APO, and Sony A9. Maybe a TS lens? What else would be highly exciting after the year we’ve had so far?
the current a6000 is still amazing especially for the uber-cheap price. i recently upgraded from an a6000 to an A7… low-light, DR and bokeh capability has leveled up. but it feels nowhere as responsive as my old a6000. and i really love the grains of the a6000 (has more natural film-like grains). the a7’s grains has a smudgy look to it.
Thats because of NR mechanics, lower it or disable it completely, play with noise and grain in post.
ive disabled it from the start. i dnt like noise reduction. i think the grains are generally more smudgy on the a7. but this is just a minor complaint. im just being nitpicky. it still takes really great photos.
Wouldn’t be surprised if an A3000 successor were announced – That was discontinued in a LOT of places earlier this year indicating Sony either outright dropped the lowend or replaced it.
24MP, black only, no 4k – really sounds like a lot of what you’d expect from an A3000 replacement.
Competing with basic DSLR’s with a DSLR-shape mirrorless was a really great idea, but they were too obsessed with model hierarchy. I’m sure if they’d spec’d it more like the A6000 it would have been much more appealing.
The basic Sony assumption was that people who want a cheap DSLR are stupid, so we’ll con them with a really basic camera in an over-sized body. Actually not many people are THAT stupid. It simply wasn’t as good as a D3300.
I would happily take full read out for 5min shots
The A9 is a nice idea, but since so many pro’s and prosumers who consider themselves pro-level are buying the A7s and A7rii I think there’d be a backlash. Stupid perhaps, but there you go. If I were Sony looking at an A9, I’d wait until A7rii/A7sii users are crying for an update, then whack them with an A9 costing an extra $700-1000.
Batii eh…
The rumors are confusing on this model, let’s just wait one more day and find out:)
Since the body’s not much larger than a Leica, maybe a 135/4 APO? Of course it has to be little larger than a Leica equivalent to be attractive.
Sony could still shrink FE lenses, as long as they shrink E lenses too.
I hope one of the new Sony Alphas has HDR on sensor for photo and video, 4K@60 and 1080@120+. Any chance of this?
Mirrorless Rumors listing 6100 specs from source. Probably fake, but eh.
They’re saying 5-axis IBIS with a smaller body than the A6000. I suspect we’re being trolled, I’m impressed they’re even printing that.
Did anyone even WANT a smaller body than the A6000?
I’ll hapilly be wrong, except that I’d actually prefer something more the size of the GX8…
Love the sound of Source 2, but I’ll eat my shorts if Sony give an APS-C E-mount camera a larger viewfinder than some of their FE bodies.
After a couple of years of silence I find it hard to believe they’d release something so impressive for the crop market. Hope I’m wrong.
Yeah, EVFs are great, but on a glacier you have to wear dark sunglasses (you are momentarily blinded if you take them off and do significant damage if you do that too many times) so you’re using the viewfinder with sunglasses on and your pupils are extremely contracted. EVFs look almost black as do screens. The problem is even worse if you have polarized glasses as the screens are polarized too. The optical viewfinder is much brighter because the light coming through the lens is extremely bright. A hybrid like the x100 might be an awesome solution.
Hiking in the dark is the other issue (very common for the start of alpine climbs)…no EVFs do great in almost pitch black. Especially problematic since you’re having to manually focus in these conditions too.
