First off: take the grain of salt.
Here is a list of specs send to me by an anonmyous source (thanks). The specs in green are those already rumored previously here on FR & confirmed by this source, while the specs in red are new.
- 24MP
- dual SD
- more than 200 AF points (2/3 are PDAF)
- Hybrid Viewfinder as X100T
- 1/8000 shutter speed
- 1/250 flash sync speed
- no tilt LCD
- ISO200-12800
The announcement:
The upcoming X-Pro2 is very likely the real reason behind the huge rebates on basically All X-gear. The savings go up to $900 — LIST OF SAVINGS HERE… and we now have one more confirmation, that the X-Pro2 is about to come.
After debunking fake rumors (not shared here on FR), that the X-Pro2 will be announced at CES, our sources said back in October here, that the X-Pro2 will be announced on January 15. This date (Janaury 15) has now been confirmed, in public, by Magnum Photos. After leaking two X-Pro2 images, Magnum justifies the removal of the photographs as follows:
“Embargo till Jan. 15 2016 due to contract with the camera manufacturer“.

IMO the problem with video wasn’t low resolution, but terrible moire. I’ve seen upscaled 540p output look better than 1080p from their cameras. Of course, it can be argued whether video is even the point of their cameras, but just commenting now that they are adding 4K support…
ISO 12800 max is a little disappointing (I assume they mean in RAW here). One of the benefits of the new sensor should have been substantially better low-light performance.
Perhaps the megapixel war won out. I’d have preferred a smaller MP count and a class-leading clean high ISO ability.
What about no native ISO 100 again
Would love ISO 50 or 64. ISO 200 seems like a deal breaker for me.
Let’s wait and see the quality of the 12800 ISO. When the X-Pro1 was launched it’s high ISO quality was superior to what most of the market offered.
ISO 6400 with the Trans sensor is very clean. I expect 12800 to be similarly clean with the X-Pro2. But the point is: if we know the ISO will max out at 12800, we know there won’t be any innovations happening with this camera at ridiculously high ISOs, like the Sonys can.
There is a real use for crazy-high ISO photography. It’s not just about low-light; it’s about maxing out your DoF in normal light.
Fuji will be using Sony’s latest APS-C sensor which they let stretch to 25,600 in the A6000. But here’s the thing: that sensor and every other large-ish CMOS sensor Sony produces is ISO-less. That means that the actual gain on the sensor never actually changes, just the interpretation of its output.
So what does that mean for Fuji and the 12,800 limit? It means Fuji thinks the images look like crap over 12,800. But, it doesn’t stop you from “under exposing” 1 stop and pushing it in post to get the same (ugly) results you’d get from 25,600 in camera.
Well, being that this is an APS-C sensor, we can’t expect that it will offer the same headroom as the Sony A7 cameras.
But if the X-Pro 2 can offer an ISO 6400 that looks like ISO 2500 on the X-Pro 1, while simultaneously offering a bump in resolution (24mp) and dynamic range, that’s still a significant, usable, step forward.
It was superior to what the rest of the APS-C market offered. The Nikon D3s still blows it away at high ISO.
It was superior to what most Canon FF had to offer as well.
I still hope for some leaf shutter lenses for this – imagine how cool would it be! 😉
I don’t like leaves blowing around in my shutter.
If any company would do it outside MF, it would be Fuji I think. More specialty lenses (besides the somewhat underwhelming 56mm APD whose effect pales in comparison to its inspiration, the Sony/Minolta 135mm STF) would really set Fuji apart from all other APS-C camera makers. I mean, they already are clearly more devoted to the format, but, a tilt/shift lens and a leaf shutter lens or two would really seal the deal there.
Personally, the innovation I’d love to see is a tilt shift lens with automatic distortion correction at all settings.
Whoooha, haven’t thought about it – this would be a big thing on the market (and pricey, I suppose :P)
For me: two lenses with leaf shutters (~20mm & ~60mm) and wireless TTL working with some third party flashes/triggers (Yongnuo? Phottix?) 😀
How would a 16, 23, 56 set of lenses with leaf shutters sound?
Good lord, 1/250 flash sync, 12800 raw ISO and dual card slots would make the X-Pro2 and the X-T2 killer wedding cameras. Can’t wait 🙂
It all depends if reliable fast af is one of the features.
I don’t know what kind of weddings you shoot but low light AF (precision) is imho a lot more important for weddings than the actual speed of it.
Correct. And thats where Fuji doesn’t disappoint me.
I’m guessing this kind:
Yes! That looks great specs! and NO tiltscreen please 🙂
Hahaha…. Well I’m sure Fuji isn’t happy about this. They practically just gave us everything. The MP(24) and the release date.
Hoping for a 24mp bsi sensor.
Nothing exciting yet and after all that time Fuji. I was hoping for it to match the panny gx8 but I am reserving my final decision when I actually get my hands on it, so far it’s just okay.
it will blow away the GX8 in image quality – so nothing exciting I guess 😉
Spec silly. Image quality is fine terrible on the details though maybe a friendlier xtran or Bayer one day.
I don’t know what you are trying to say ( I don’t get the meaning of your post).
But I have seen examples, where the 16MP Fuji easily out resolves the 20MP GX8 so yes, Specs are not the most important thing. Glas counts and Fujinon is incredible lately.
Yes, I know as I have all of the Fuji primes and the kit lens. Specs to me this time around is important. Well, I would be content with GX8 autofocus speed (down to -3 in lowlight). No IBIS maybe it has leaf shutter that would be okay too.
With interchangeable lenses, a leaf shutter would have to be in the lens.
That said, nothing stops Fuji from perhaps doing that someday, and as a bonus it would work on existing cameras (with firmware update.)
Sometimes exptecting to much can lead to a disappointment. To much hype going on?
So it will improve everything. Resolution, probably SNR (noise), dynamic, shutter speed, sync speed, AF performance and coverage
I’d say that looks like a nice evolution 🙂
Yes I agree, these specs are plenty enough for me, but some people already complaining.
To me usability is far more important than plain specs, and I know Fujifilm won’t disappoint us there.
I was hoping for faster flash sync speed – 1/250 is just like everyone else. 1/500 would have made it’s mark.
1/250 is enough. I recommend the X100S/T for 1/2000 sec flash-sync.
1/4000s actually, in some conditions.
Depending on whether you use remote / wire triggers. With wired triggers, sweet spot is 1/1000s (which is more than good enough, enable ND if you need it). For remote trigger, ~1/500s is the most I could get.
Is there any faster sync speeds on in camera shutter than 1/250? (Leaf shutter is faster of course). Back in the days (90ies) some studio flashes had quite long burn time (duration), 1/500 s I think, so you did not want to use any faster than 1/250 anyhow. Today, outside on a sunny day with large aperture is a different matter.
The Nikon D70s has a flash sync of 1/500. Still have it on a shelf(dead sensor)
Weren’t those CCD, which could do global shutter?
Well yes, using a CCD sensor with global shutter. By using CMOS we traded that for other benefits like good high ISO. We’ll see faster sync speeds again once global shutters are back.
Nikon D810 have 1/250, stop this endless nonsense crying.
Olympus EM-1 can sync at 1/320 sec. but only with some flash units. Otherwise syncs at 1/250 sec. Leaf shutters on lenses allows faster sync speeds than focal plane shutter e.g. X100 series.
People, stay real. Physics limits the maximum sync speed of a focal plane shutter because at a certain speed it doesn’t happen anymore that the whole shutter is open at once. But that is what is needed to sync a flash without HSS (= multiple flashes). We can’t get around this limit so please stop pretending like Fuji can do magic.
Let’s face it: most people reading and commenting rumor sites lack the proper knowledge to discuss the technology they wish to be implemented and just call out random numbers they think sound great….
So the speed and operation of a focal plane shutter is set in stone (physics) just like a f/1.0 lens has a larger diameter than a f/5.6 lens when for the same mount, etc…I did not know that…I just thought the shutter had to remain fully open for a related period of time, before the shutter starts to close.
Maybe it’s not just the shutter, but the shutter and how fast the sensor can read the data, maybe I have to wait for a global shutter…
For the record, the Canon 1DM4 has a CMOS sensor and a speedlite x-sync speed of 1/300, and that is not using HSS.
Well it’s not completely written in stone. If we could build a shutter curtain that can move infinitely fast we could theoretically sync at any speed longer than the flash duration. But that doesn’t work in the real world. We might see slow progress in mechanical shutters but upping the ante by a whole stop is extremely unlikely because the curtain would need to move twice as fast as it does now. Even if they achieved that it would probably wear out the shutter much faster and cause more camera shake.
We’re probably two to three years away from global shutters. So it wouldn’t make financial sense to invest into better mechanical shutters now if they will be going away soon. Global electronic shutters with short/no lag have like a million benefits over mechanical shutters.
Perhaps Fuji has some leaf shutters in development?
No native ISO 100 would be crap.
Anyway.. Another “anonymous source” so I will wait for serious leaks.
Disappointing the absence of HSS flash. I was really hoping for more…
This is about a camera, not about a flash. Think -> type -> post. Only post if your thoughts are worth posting. In this case, they probably weren’t
Ouch.
Ouch +10
HSS requires camera support. So, now you look not only like a jerk but an ignoramus as well. I assume that was your goal. Congratulations on achieving it.
Yeah, same goes for you.
CES 2016 will take place from 6 to 9 January so, if the Fujifilm X-Pro2 is announced on 15 January, it won’t be announced at CES :).
right… and that’s what I said in the article. The rumor of the CES 2016 appreard on other sites
They want to fill the gap between CES and AVN (ha ha ha)
It will be at CES!
Know I’ll be in the minority here, but really wanted to see a tilt LCD in the X-Pro form factor.
I’d love that too. If it is implemented nicely, those who don’t want it, wouldn’t even notice it!
Nah same here. I use the tilt on my xt1 a lot. I think they really want us to use the hvf more than the LCD.
+1 tilt LCD
X-T2 will probably feature a tilt screen.
Wouldn’t mind a tilt screen either. But what happens to the buttons on the left? The X-T1 solved that nicely though, and maybe even improves one-handed use. I’m sure they have considered all the options.
Guess there had to be some difference between the X-T2 and X-Pro2 other than the Hybrid VF and its placement. 😉
No No No!
“First off: take the grain of salt.”
The menu at FujiRumors sure is tasty, but a bit too salty. But I guess that’s how it should be.
Base ISO should be at least 100 if not 50.
*It would be great if* base iso was at least 100 if not 50.
It wouldn’t be great.
Agree. I know I can use ND filters but having ISO100 and 50 makes life easier for someone using strobes outdoors.
What is it on the XPRO1?
The amount Fuji inflates ISO means the base ISO is near 100 already anyway.
True, and if I have to choose between better high iso performance and a lower base ISO, sorry, I’ll always go for high ISO. You can certainly find a workaround for the base ISO but if noise screws your higher ISOs you’re screwed.
I was thinking the same I can’t understand why it would start so high. If it is a trade off to get higher iso performance then I do agree that would be good to have. As a current FF Nikon user looking to possibly buy in to the Fuji system not having iso below 100 seems very strange and would have to force your shutter speeds to very high numbers in the mid day sun.
Anonymous source, so no point starting to flame Fuji already. For me those are not the improvements I’ve been waiting for, but we’ll see…
Yeah…I mean who would want improved AF performance…what were they thinking??
I don’t see improved AF performance mentioned in the rumored specs. I only said the listed specs are not what I’m interested in – improved AF and dynamic range are.
My two big concerns are AF and the sensor. I really hope, whatever the resolution, that Fuji is using one that features all the latest and greatest Sony tech. History tells us that we’ll be stuck with it for years and years so I’d rather not start behind the curve.
Those are my concern too. The AF must be up to scratch this time. An up to date AF from fuji is overdue. Otherwise, i am happy sofar with the rumored spec list
True, but to be honest: the 16 MP sensor, at the time it was used in the X-Pro1, wasn’t latest tech. But still, when you get past the pure specs and all that dynamic range bullshit, you get fairly good files out of that sensor. So generally speaking, people don’t choose Fuji for the latest sensor tech (much like Canon) but for style, lenses, usability and, yes, image quality. Seriously, even if the sensor isn’t the latest model, if Fuji manages to squeeze out the maximum performance, like they did with the 16 MP sensor, we’ll be satisfied.
I appreciate what you’re saying, Marc, but I my expectation is that Fuji will maximize the IQ out of whatever sensor they end up choosing. I’d rather it be the latest and greatest. I tend to fall in the “as good as possible” camp rather than the “good enough” camp. That’s just me.
I don’t know whether Fuji suits your needs then. Maybe you’re better with Sony if you want the latest sensors.
Is it A6000 sensor? 25 CDAF points + 175 PDAF points (2/3) = over 200 AF ponts.
…and new X100?????? what of that? Same specs? Same release?
how much you think this will cost?
The X-Pro1 was $1700 when announced,
don’t count on it being cheaper this time around.
oh yes, i remembered. ouch. price.
At or over $2k
Does that mean X100T successor will come with the new 24MP chip? Sounds nice
Isn’t it a A6000 sensor? 25 CDAF points + 175 PDAF points (like 2/3) = over 200 AF points…
I’m excited! 🙂
I hope your excited about being excited:)
😀
I hope this 24mp sensor not to be the same of Nex7.
it’s not
maybe ,this last rumors it’s use x-trans CFA dose mean Fuji push replace CFA.
all we know new image sensor on-date use Buried CFA that stick below mocrolens,if Fuji use new image sensor they can not push x-trans CFA on it.(because will be redundant CFA)
I don’t understand what you want to say. Could you explain?
I think he’s trying to say that up-to-date sensors have the color filters under the microlenses (instead of over them) so Fuji can’t add an X-Trans CFA if they use a current sensor.
As far as I know the CFA has always been under the microlenses but I’m not sure about that.
that’s what I thought.
No offence, but this shows (again), that people here just don’t have much knowledge about certain things.
1. Fuji is one of the biggest inventors and manufacturers of color filter arrays. Putting it on (or in) an custom sensor is no problem. (where do you think sony is getting cfas from? ;))
2. embedded cfa is not here with APS-C sensors (that’s probably 1 or 2 generations out).
thanks,for explain.
i notice up-to-date image sensor use on-chip cfa.
it can’t remove bayer cfs for take sharper b/w photo.
i not sure it is Buried CFA but it can reduce crosstalk color.
Fuji might order pure-sensor(without CFA) to sensor manufacturer and they will put x-trans CFA.
That’s why I suspect X-Pro2 has a A6000 sensor which has also over 200 AF points with about 2/3 PDAF. Sounds similar.
Shhh not too loud.
Will probably wait it out and see what the x200 will look like.
Would like:
Accurate ISO settings.
Shrink it.
Must be fast fast fast.
The sensor needs to steal a march on its competition. It’s been behind so long that just catching up now to where the other guys were two years ago is not good enough. Leapfrogging the other guys would be best.
Really work with the popular software companies so that they have full support of the new model from day one.
I hope that it’s built like a tank and doesn’t have those shitty buttons like X-T1. Anyway I’ll probably won’t be buying it and will invest to Q to accompany M.
Well said and I would agree. Just trying to update the camera to ease the GAS & anticipation of xp1 fanboys is simply “marketing 101” by Fuji.
I’m sure we’ll be seeing an improvement in every area. I’m simple, I’d like just a few things after spending so much time with my XP1: bigger buffer, way faster auto-focus and buttons and dials that are a hybrid of the XP1 and X100T (not fond of the latter’s d-pad but love the dials and button placements). Oh, and the same silver paint job that’s on the X100T but keep the XP1 grip. I love that grip, I don’t know why, but it just feels right.
That’s something I could never get used to and bought aftermarket grip. Just didn’t feel safe in the hand while walking streets.
I don’t understand this part:
Two X-PRO2 version, one 24MP APS-C and one 25-27 MP APS-X, compatible with XF/XC lenses (NeS + OS)
Don’t worry about it…it isn’t going to happen.
The new autofocus points sounds great, that is really the only thing that would be a real upgrade from my X-T1. Not going to buy the Pro-2.
What I would really like is for Fuji to release a standalone RAW file converter, similar to Olympus Viewer. I would pay for it.
Except that Olympus Viewer 3 is practically unusable on account of a horrible GUI and glacial operational speed.
It does do an excellent job of processing Oly RAW files, though, by all accounts.
“Embargo till Jan. 15 2016 due to contract with the camera manufacturer“.
Just as I said in the previous thread.
I am very excited about the next generation of Fuji cameras. The sensor is likely to be a more significant upgrade then just megapixels. The Sony 24 mp sensor in the Nikon d7200 has a huge dynamic range, much better then canon’s current full frame chips and not too different to Nikon full frame chips. Imagine this Sony chip with Fuji tech such as xtrans and colour processing.
And I expect that’s what you’re going to see. In fact, I suspect this new 24mp sensor from Fuji may even be a generation past the D7200 (especially if it uses BSI), which itself offers 14.6 stops of dynamic range, which at the time of its release was the second best in the entire industry (after the D810).
The real question will be autofocus – will Fuji take a significant step forward in autofocus speed?
Agreed. I’m waiting for AF speed improvements most of all, dynamic range second. The rest is a nice bonus but not needed. If the X-Pro2/X-T2 generation does not improve significantly on this I’ll wait for the third generation and keep using Fuji and Nikon in the meantime.
D7200 chip is made by Toshiba.
Let’s see what Fuji is coming up with
The D7100 sensor is made by Toshiba, the one found in D7200 is made by Sony.
nope. D7200 is Toshiba as well. You can check it at chipworks (or ask Thom Hogan and others)
I already cheeked and it’s made by Sony. 🙂
but remember that Sony purchased Toshiba sensor division, so…
Exactly. 🙂
Can you explain how one can gain dynamic range off an APS-C sized sensor? What’s really needed for a dynamic range improvement is to move to a bigger sensor i.e. FF
It’s sounds very good. My hopes stands waiting the 15th January. I desire that at least that IS0 6400 be very very clean (among others specs.)… Then at least I could do the switch to the X side !!!
Fuji cameras already have great results at ISO 6400
True, but not with 24MP on a sensor of the same size as the current 16MP.
24MP ***** Don’t need or want it
dual SD *****Don’t need it
more than 200 AF points (2/3 are PDAF) ***** This interests me.
Hybrid Viewfinder as X100T*****Good, the hybrid is part of the charm of the X-Pro1
1/8000 shutter speed ***** With ELS, not needed.
1/250 flash sync speed ***** Nice, but not really a big deal for me.
no tilt LCD ***** pity, I have come to be fond of them.
ISO200-12800 *****Marginal gain, they way Fujifilm defines ISO is off anyways.
Then X-Pro2 doesn’t seem to be the right camera for you.
I don’t understand how you can say that ISO200-12800 is a marginal gain without any sample images at high iso…
Hi, Or perhaps a better way to say it is that my current X-cams (X-Pro1/X-T1/X100s are still just fine for me.. . In fact, I prove daily that their capabilities far outpace my own. 🙂
My comment regarding the ISO is that it’s simply a 1 stop gain in high ISO and no gain on the lower end. To me, that’s marginal. But, I’m sure the big number with 5 digits in it will impress some.
I know you have the pictures Patrick! the High-res pictures .
I want to Download the pics
Just two months till we know for sure. Looking forward to it. The specs sound very nice. The only question for me is what 24 mp sensor will they be using. If it turns out to be a considerable improvement in dynamic range and resolution, and the viewfinder is as large and bright as the one in the X-T1, it will undoubtedly be my next camera.
I have stuck with Fuji for its high-quality lenses and design and feel of the cameras. While spec wise, the A7r ii is attractive, I still don’t like the design and feel of Sony cameras.
I looked a lot at Sony lately – its the glass that lets them down. The 24-70 Zeiss seems like a real let down. What’s the point of having 42MP if the image is fuzzy?
What’s the point of focusing on the worst lens of the lot? There are plenty that are better plus all the other lenses from Canon.
And before anybody calls me a Sony fanboy, please note: I don’t own any Sony camera and am early adopter of X100 and X-Pro1, these days shooting mostly using Leica.
Not fanboying at all. I really gave it a lot of thought, but for me, that would be my most frequently used lens.
There is some good glass, but I think Sony have traded off optical quality against size and weight, with a lot of software fixes applied in camera. It’s a perfectly good strategy that will suit a lot of people, but not me.
This is just my opinion – it’s ok to have a different one!
Any rumours on weather sealing?
the answer is in the rumored specs list 🙂
Yeah, its called a ziploc bag.
Lol, done that.
with sony and canon looking to rule camera world, really nice to see fuji still committed to owning a piece of the pie, competition drives innovation, i pitty the wives of the fuji engineers, those guys must have been working 20 hours a day
What competition? There are few who switched, even more who switched to alpha 7 range, but the most haven’t.
Don’t understand why no tilt screen or even a touch screen. Hopefully the X-E3 will have it all, otherwise my X-E1 keeps rolling along.
what about wifi and gps and stabilised sensor?
X100s + Yongnuo triggers gets you 1/800s – higher is not reliable,
I’m in minority here, but here you have it: Fuji should make full frame camera based on the X-Pro1 and IBIS.
When I was buying APS-C mirrorless I was deciding between NEX-7 and X-Pro1. Fuji won because of HVF and better controls.
Now that there are FF cameras on the market, cheaper here in the UK than X-T1, I don’t understand that Fuji doesn’t explore that niche they did with the introduction of X-Pro1. There are customers who prefer controls scheme of Fuji over Sony, but the only option they have is Leica – and that’s where the door to these customers is wide open.
Fuji is going to lose a lot of fuji campers if they start new lens series to fit a full frame sensor. Just think about how many people have invested into x-series lenses.
24 MP… Are they really necessary? Have noticed that actual speed demons cameras have 16-18 MP but, in exchange have an outstanding AF with a sensitivity of -2 EV and a buffer size for +11 fps in raw.
A new sensor around 20MP with X-trans CFA able to deliver 16-bit color would means a real improving in dynamic range, and such imagen size with the currently excellent standard of fujinon lenses gives an outstanding resolution.
Real improvement in AF would be to extend sensitivity below -2 EV and no less than 81 AF points across the frame with a balanced mix of contrast and phase detection, to ensure accuracy.
An IQ output similar to 2500 ISO from XPro1 (at +6400 ISO in the XPro2) would be a good improving in high ISO performance.
Finally, dual card slots with UHS-2/3 technology; and the hybrid VF improvements including a magnification no less than .74x and a more responsive performance (minimize all lags of any kind) and you have a top notch camera.
Tilting screen, you have the XT line for that and I really would prefer a swiveling or fully articulated screen instead, otherwise fix screen is much better.
weather sealed?
I’m wondering if someone can shed light on the number of PDAF points quoted above since: http://www.digitalcameraworld.com/2013/10/18/new-fuji-x-e2-claims-worlds-fastest-af-speed/ claims there are a tad more on the XE2.
Here is a sample of that photo that was by taken down from the website, at least what seems x-pro 2 indicated by exif file. I found in one of 4chan’s threads /P/. You can reverse search it by image google to find more information about it.
Any rumors about the “quietness” of the shutter? I love the shutter sound on my X-T1. Do you think it will be louder with X250 and 1/8000?
