OMG, i want this baby
Who does think that the drive should have a separate dial instead of ISO? I don’t!
It’s a worthwhile simplification, and helps your X-T1 keep it’s value 🙂
“…and helps your X-T1 keep it’s value”
I’m sure that’s why.
will it have the new af options the xt1 got?
I like it.
Looks great. Flash exposure compensation should be easy to change now for TTL shooters.
Clean and simple design. Good ergonomics with decent uncluttered thumb rest. If it has nice tactile buttons and dials…then I’m in…add that 35mm f2 please!
I love it!! (since the first rumor bout it and the first pic) please be good with the price tag fuji ! :’D
no easy way to change iso. no fn button near shutter, unless the record button can be reprogrammed.
Of course you can reprogram it like on all current bodies.
But that is not really needed, you have two other dials on the front and rear. I’d certainly use one of those for ISO instead of redundant aperture and shutter speed control.
Wouldn’t it just be a matter of Fn + back Dial?
I agree, prefer a dedicated dial, but the X-T10 seems as or more convenient than most PASM systems.
It’s almost like they make a different camera for people who want more control.
I suggest we just wait and see.
There’s something about the body I don’t find appealing. IMO I just don’t think it looks good. I don’t think the X30 does either though.
Looks like it will be a really great little camera. Still don’t dig the front looks too much but it’s not too bad.
Now the big question is whether this thing will be updated like the X-T1? Not that I expect (m)any more updates for the X-T1 but I’d be really hesitant to buy anything but the top-of-the-line body from Fuji with their current firmware policy. In that case a used X-T1 would be a much better buy for several reasons.
The easiest thing to do is buy the camera you want today that fits your needs today rather than what it might be in the future. Treat FW updates as an added surprise / perk and you will never be disappointed. Once you start expecting / demanding them, then you are setting yourself up for disappointment.
That’s exactly what I do but potential updates are still something that should be considered. I wouldn’t buy a camera that doesn’t please me as it is. But potentially getting better in the future is still a plus point for me when deciding what to buy.
But I will continue to criticize that we have come to accept such behavior from camera companies even though we would be up in arms if Apple told us the iPhone 6 wouldn’t get an update to iOS 9. Or a 2-year-old iMac can’t update beyond Yosemite anymore. I completely fail to understand why you people even defend such behavior. Planned obsolescence is a terrible thing not just for consumers but also for the environment!
I think the apple argument is a different kettle of fish and not valid. Why? when ios9 is released and if you can’t upgrade from ios8, you cannot install the latest apps or even upgrade them. Where as your fuji still functions brilliantly, and you don’t lose any functionality (as you would if core apps couldn’t be updated)
The apps you had with iOS 8 will still be running fine and it is VERY rare for the functionality to stop because of new APIs. I ran iOS 6 for quite a while on the 3GS while iOS 7 was already out and my phone worked just fine. Exactly like it is now with almost every camera. It will run everything it ran before but nothing new.
If you guys are happy with paying for new hardware when software could improve everything you find annoying feel free to do that. I’d much prefer to only pay for the software update.
Software and Hardware run hand in hand. The more complicated the code, the better the processor has to be to handle it otherwise, like your 3 year old laptop with the latest software, it’s going to grind to a stop!
At the end of the day, they are a business and they need to make money. You can’t expect them to keep updating a camera for years on end…. even if the hardware could support the software changes. The most you can really expect is for them to keep current/latest version updated with FW to repair bugs or, add minor improvements. Fuji go well beyond this.
For me, I always buy new hardware (camera) every 18-24 months in any case. The shutter at that point is rapidly approaching the point where replacement / failure become a risk. Taking 4000+ shots every month eats into the life span of the shutter.
I’m hoping that the the X-T1mkii will be out by the time my current T1’s need replacing. On that basis, I’m hoping they don’t delay a new version to long by releasing to many FW updates for the T1 😉
I know hardware has it’s limits and of course I don’t expect every new feature to make its way down to my X100S. But there are many simple things that would need no additional processing power: EC in manual mode (though Fuji says it’s not possible to implement I don’t believe them), customisation of more buttons, deactivation of the rotation function on the 4-way-controller, “EVF only plus Eye-sensor” function, “waxy skin off” setting, presets for in-camera raw processing, direct access to AF points, function to disable focus ring for street shooting, function to disable the fine adjustments to exposure and aperture which often happen accidentally, changing ISO by pressing function button and rotating a dial, overexposure warning for different colours, option to disable the constant sliding in and out of the EVF cover, customisable Q-Menu. Just to name a few 😉
None of those makes me dislike the camera and I absolutely dig the feel of shooting with it and the image quality. But some of them do make shooting a lot less fun than it could be.
Well, I do expect companies to update a camera for years. Only I don’t expect the updates to be free. That’s how software usually works: you pay an upgrade price for a new version. Bug fixes should be free and feature updates should cost money. Easy peasy, no financial problem here. They’d lose a few sales of the new model and gain many sales of the new FW. And since most of the firmware is written for the new models anyway they just need to port the hardware-supported parts of the code to the older model. Bonus: it pushes the companies to innovate more in hardware instead of crippling the software to sell you the next model which is nearly identical hardware-wise.
I’m not a professional, I’m a student with wife and child who loves photography. I can’t update my camera body that often and I don’t eat up the shutter as fast as you do 😉 And if Fuji gave me the electronic shutter I’d hardly need the mechanical one at all.
Is that a threaded shutter release?
Yep.
That pretty much confirms the lack of weather sealing, doesn’t it? If my memory serves me right, the reason for the X-T1’s non-threaded shutter release was weather sealing.
Start liking the design… I really hope that price is about 700€ body only. What is that switchbutton next to shutterspeeddial?
No ISO dial = no buy
This just means I’ll have to hold off until either the Graphite Silver X-T1 drops in price or whenever the X-T1 Mark II is released before I invest in a second body.
ISO must be on the front dial
the back looks a lot prettier. Small grip is disappointing for me. had the xe1, that thing was a pain to hold, hope this is better. Still that same 16 mp sensor though…
It was never going to be the 1st Fuji camera to have a 24mp sensor though. That will be saved for the X-Pro2 / X-T2 (or X-T1mkii).
and hopefully the replacement of x100t.
Still looks like a toy front-on, but the top and back do look okay.
Still not liking the smaller grip on top of an overall smaller body.
Still really don’t understand why anybody would want a drive dial instead of an ISO dial.
At this point I’m thinking waiting to find a used X-T1 in good condition is going to remain the smarter purchase, or saving even more money and just going with the X-E2. If I had no other camera maybe I’d think differently, but looking at this as a backup body, it’s giving up a little too much. If the price is equal to the E2 then I’ll be on board again, but that seems very unlikely.
Count me as one of those people who has a minor preference for drive mode over ISO. I almost exclusively shoot in aperture priority with Auto-ISO, and on the rare occasions I use something other than single shot drive, it’d be nice to be able to chance it with a dial.
Count me in as well. I shoot with a film camera back then with only 3 rolls of different ASA(ISO) value. I dont change ISO THAT often with a digital camera too. And i too tend to change my drive mode from single to continues if something fast happens rite before my very eye. But yea he’s got a point but this is no x-t1. If it has one,it’ll be a x-e killer for sure.
Looks good! Us $1000 with the 18-55mm Hopefully!!
Yet another control layout.
..that is way better than any of the competitors’ 🙂
Hope they don’t make the flash top cover out of cheap plastic. Could become an issue in the future, when material strength deteriorates. Would be awesome if one could use it in a commander mode for other (fuji) flashes.
Its not meant to please anyone who prefers the x-t1 nor is it meant for those who love the RE styling unless they are looking for a 2nd body. Its a cheaper version of the x-t1 and a much simpler design to attract x30/xm1 user or newcomers.. Most people out there are so used to slr style but find the bulk and weight is just too much.. They want a retro looking slr style which is just as light as film ones(other than olympus)..
Fuji’s x-t1 is just too expensive.. Amatures dont even know what is iso or dont really change it that often.. Its not meant to be on par with the x-t1 in terms of buttons and dials layout..
now we have everything except price 🙁
What the bungle with placement of AF-L and AE-L buttons – they placed them at wrong side!: AF-L button should be placed on left back command dial, and AE-L on the right, like it is in X-T1. This will make back-button focusing nightmare. And there is only 1 Fn button, and where? Not on the top… it’s gonna be very slow camera. Whom X-T10 is going to compete with? Why to buy it instead of used X-T1 or many other?
Its competing with Oly em10.
they ARE at the same place as on the X-T1! AE-L on the left & AF-L on the right of the command dial
Why spreading FUD all the time ?
Probably for the fun of it and because not using AF-lock trick before.
What a wonderful placement of the AF-L and AE-L buttons – they are placed exactly where they should be. AF-L to be used for back button focusing on the top-right, like on most cameras… Perfect!
competing with A6000, EM10 and probably EM5ii
why instead of T1? It’s cheaper
why instead of others? Because you want the Fuji glas, or Fuji jpg, or Fuji handling or … (you get the point ;))
Mhm, no Fn-Button on the top. I hope the ISO setting can be assigned to the front or back dial.
Wonder how good the finder will be related to T1 & E2.
The finder aperture looks similar to the E2 (ie a lot smaller than the T1), bit hopefully there is still enough eye-relief to not feel too cramped.
E2 numbers are: 2.36 million dot, 100% fov, magnification 0.62 times – so exactly the same as in the T10
T1: magnification 0.77
So it’s probably just the E2 viewfinder moved to the middle (it looks like the eyecup is fixed, so changing them stay exclusive to the T1)
Actually, the T10/E2 might just suit me better as I sometimes find it hard to see the entire frame in full view mode on the T1.
(The number of pixels used to display the frame in the reduced mode is quite a bit less.)
Guess it’s no point worrying too much, as I cant buy it until i can test it anyway.. 😉
Ive heard that there is more to the evf than that. Ie someone in here was saying that the x100t evf was much better than the xe2…
the whole X100T EVF concept is different.
But yeah, there is more to an EVF than just specs. Like with other monitors technology (here OLED instead of LCD like on the LX100), viewing angles, color shift, refresh rate are all important.
And then comes the optical part. a lens – aspherical on both sides. That what makes the probably same panel superior in the X-T1 to the X-E1
see here: http://fujifilm-x.com/development_story/en/developer/evf/
The design is asesome! If the ISO dail is the front wheel, I think we are looking at a winner. Never have to leave the vewfinder, nor change the left hand grip to adjust the settings. Left hand on the lens and the right one on the control buttons. Perfect!
Hope they also bring a solid vertical grip with battery compartment. Would be awesome!
The design really looks like the old NIKON FM-series. If it would only had the same solid build quality.
True. But its more like the Fujica ST801. The viewfinder hump doesnt have the leather on it tho. And im sure it will be as solid as the rest of the x-series other than the plastic x-a line.
no weather sealing, no ISO button, no awesome viewfinder… doesn’t look like the XT1 (isn’t even the same camera!). DEAD ON ARRIVAL.
I’m just kidding, great job Fuji. If those two wheels are clickable and function assignable, ergonomically this will appeal to those moving from DSLRs to mirrorless. I hope they sell like hot cakes.
I thought that it not having weather sealing was pretty obvious – this is a cheaper version of the xt10
Nice. Clean. Buttons in the right place. Can’t understand the ISO questions: the Q button is the easiest road to ISO on any X camera (XT-1 included). Only one doubt: I see no room in the back for tha left hand thumb, for those that hold the body with both hands (there must still be some).
About the “ISO questions”, some people prefer to look down at the settings and make adjustments as necessary before turning the camera on.
And some people change their drive mode often too. This dial have that ability for quick access. Sure the x-t1 got both.. But we cant have both because it not meant to be x-t1.. Its a cheaper version. Meaning theres less stuff. If they only took out the WR n awesome EVF, i dont think it’ll be that cheap.. Hopefull the price is right tho *fingers crossed*
With an ISO dial you can change the ISO from one value to another and back again without ever looking away. Just like with shutter and aperture, you can just count the clicks in your head while you’re still framing the image or observing the scene. Being able to change your exposure—every element of it—without looking away from what you’re photographing is a huge, huge deal.
On the other hand, how frequently are you needing to change drive mode away from one shooting mode to another, and then back again, while at the same time needing to keep your eyes on your subject? Who ever thinks “I’ll take this single shot then OH QUICK, better bracket this next one, now back to sing—no wait quick quick better shoot this as a video, okay now back to single shot”?
There is never an instance where you need to change shooting mode rapidly and blindly. There can be times when you need to change ISO both rapidly and blindly. It makes far more sense to have ISO accessible blind than the drive mode.
That’s absolutely right – you put your finger on it. The drive mode dial is redundant; a waste of space if space is at a premium on a small camera like this. Was anyone clamoring for this? No. Did they have the kinds of thoughts you articulated when they slapped a drive mode dial on there? Apparently not.
This is what worries me about Fuji. They have some great innovations, but also some things that they try out seemingly for the hell of it, like this.
It makes me think they don’t really understand usability… it’s more hit-and-miss.
It is great if it is. I also understand that the Q menu is a quick way to access the ISO settings. However, I’ve just gotten used to being able to look down at my camera, knowing what my settings are, and making adjustments as necessary before even turning the camera on.
Just noticed that it has tilting screen, I waited for non-tilting screen, so it’s good news. LCD is “old” 3inch 920k dot, not 3″ 1040k like X-T1
This is expected to be the norm for future models, I guess.
Kit lens XC16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OIS II
WTF it should be XF18-55mmF2.8-4 R LM OIS
Looks quite smaller than the X-T1. Good news.
I know it makes a lot of sense to use the Xtrans II sensor in this mid range body, but somehow I wish they had used the X-A2 bayer sensor here. The output from the X-A2 is really excellent.
I see no room for a popup flash. The mount for the external flash is supposed super sturdy. There will not be a popup flash underneath.
Neither do I, otherwise these can’t be real imagens.
Look at the picture closely. The one from the top view. It looks like a ‘hinge’ thingi on the evf hump there.
You can even see the lines of d pop up flash
Also, there is the flash lever on the left. And typically just the housing surrounding the hotshoe tilts up.
Right, obviously there is this lever. If the surrounding of the hotshoe tilts up, how far up would that go? If the flash is too close to the lens, you’ll end up having shadows.
Ahh yes, shadows and red eye…the bane of most popup flashes…
Oyea forgot to mention that! Haha. Thanks 😀
Like it now that I can see detail. I thought it didn’t have a real shutter dial. Silly me. Will the smaller X-E type viewfinder there’s plenty of room under the hump for the flash. And you can plainly see the release and the seams where it will deploy. Hmmm….Maybe I won’t wait for a new sensor…. but in black please.
Was not impressed at first, but now I really like it, think it will look great in a brown leather half case. XC lenses make great kits, light, cheap, still amazingly sharp. This is exactly what Fuji was missing in the line up, a gateway drug for future X photographers.
Gosh, man it’s a camera, not a Barbie that ‘will look great in a pink dress’!
Is that a Freudian slip, because I was not talking about dress up Barbie games, but the retro design. As any other Fuji, I do not have to question the quality of the camera nor the images that it will produce, so the only thing to critique is the looks and feel. And just like my old SLR Pentax, Olympus and Nikon, I would love to see this retro SLR-like camera in leather half case that protects it as well as makes it much more comfortable to grip.
I do not like it….. Love the look of the x-t1 but not this camera. Waiting to see the x-pro 2 before pulling the trigger on the x-t1.
Yea. At the end, it aint bout looks tho.. Its what u do with the camera that counts 🙂 hehe
Starting to LIKE it. Hoping for a good price…
Nice that they ditched the X-t1 shutter button for the traditional. Now we can use a real soft-release
Any added rumors bout the xf35mm f2 yet?
Rumor is it will be awesome, but more expensive than you want it to be. 😉
Yea true.. Great lenses dont come cheap huh? 😀 haha
Wait, why want the f2 when the f1.4 is available?? What am I missing?
It’s supposed to be Leica-small (and stylish) and have better AF and be cheaper but the f/1.4 will still be king.
Of course there’s a related rumor (that may or may not have been this same one but confused) of a 35mm f/1.4 mkII that focuses faster but otherwise is mostly the same (which makes sense to me because damn the 35mm pumps while focusing).
Yeah I agree. I have my f/1.4 on the X-E2, and it does hunt often. But it’s still one of my favorite lenses. It stays on the E2 all the time. I use the T1 for the rest of my lenses.
Agreed. It’s my only Fuji prime and when in doubt it’s the only lens I take. I actually find the pumping kind of nice because it signals whether focus is working or not, compared to the 18-55 where I really have to pay attention to the screen. Even still the pumping is considered a flaw and it goes hand-in-hand with the actually-quite-limited speed of the focusing on the lens. For the price it will be good to see them update it to be capable of the speeds Fuji is achieving with the latest cameras.
Haha. Just for the sake of asking. :’D moreover, im waiting for everything! Haha. I have an X100 n a X30. Im missing the interchangeable already since i previously own a nikon and a bunch of lenses.
I’d like the 1.4. No doubt bout that. Some say its a lil sluggish. I have missed a few shots with my x100 even with the latest firmware. I cant go tru that again. X30’s speed is refreshing.. And im not a bokeh guy and i think the f2 is quite enough for my needs.. See how it goes.. If the f2 is priced higher, maybe i’ll consider f1.4
I use a bunch of my older (non “G”) Nikon lenses on my Fuji cameras. All you need is an adapter. And of course you have to be ok with shooting fully manual. I used my old Nikon 35/2 lens before I bought the Fuji 35/1.4. Worked beautifully.
True. Im used to old manual nikon lens as well. Coz on the nikon, i shoot film. Haha! Sure the sluggishness is not a big problem. The problem is, i already sold all of my nikon’s and now funding for a fujibody n lenses. :’D
What is that top lever switch? Could that be Auto ISO?
I guess that will be for choosing automatic aperture on lenses that don’t have an aperture ring (like the XC kit lens).
I believe it’s Auto everything, like a panic mode.
(with scene recognition)
Panic mode, LOL
Still warming up to the front of the body but the no frills button layout looks good except for the dedicated Function button. I like the recessed EV compensation at least in theory. With the enlarged top plate it’s too bad they didn’t enlarge some of the buttons. Now we wait for the price.
As much as I like the E1/2 form factor, It seems they just couldn’t figure out where to fit the extra drive mode dial and still keep the camera compact.
Now what would that mean for the upcoming Pro2 — where does the ISO dial go on that one..?! :-O
Another question: how should a working pro effectively use those large pro zooms and new large primes (like the upcoming 120 mm macro) with a x-pro1-like body? The x-pro2 has to be larger for sure, and the RF style is not the best for a modern use with red labeled Fuji zooms. The new flagship has to be something different for sure.
I like the new direction of fuji design. Retro but without too much frills, so that it looks quite modern.
I don’t think so. The 16-50 is quite good, smaller and lighter. If you want a 18-55 you can get it on ebay for 250-300 €.
can someone tell me the main differences from the E-X2? more fps? AF/ or is it almost an E-X2 in a different form?
Guess the biggest change is a fresh firmware! 😉
But you’re pretty much correct, I’d say.
That makes me worried the E3 will have a PASM wheel and a cheaper finder. (ie a big let down for fans of that particular form factor..)
yep…
the upgrade for the E-X3 would be a X-T1 size EVF at least…
no weather sealing..for that we have the X-T1…
after 3 days, it looks better now, for me. But still not good enough to be a fuji
Fuji and Patrick — careful now with what and when you decide to leak stuff… people might like/hate based on what you show… this article seems to be positive now. Not so much with the previous one.
pondering what cameras will NOT be with us by the end of the year…….
So Fujifilm is reading our comments, evaluating our reaction, then decide that price to put on it.
No chance. There are 120 comments right now form about 100 different posters. If Fujifilm plans to sell over 10,000 units and if we all plan to buy, then 100 of us here would represent under 1% of their market – no sane company would ever make important decisions on price, features, design, button placement and other parameters we are commenting on here based on less than 1% population sample. I am sure they are reading this forum (as well as other sites) and perhaps here or there using some ideas, but we are simply overrating our importance.
old sensor
old viewfinder
old LCD-screen
old battery
probably old processor
probably same flash that in X-M1 (old)
nothing wrong with those “old” things, but only new investment for Fuji is just the body, so it can’t and shouldn’t be pricy!
Only thing is new is Autofocus system but Its not yet confirmed. I agree with you. It should not cost more. Lets wait and see 🙂
good sensor
good viewfinder
good LCD (the D in LCD stands for D so no screen needed)
battery could be bigger, but the body looks small – so good battery
good processor (look, what the AF will be able to do!)
go… wait – never ever used a popup flash
Will be a good camera and people will pay for it if the price is fair.
“old is always better” 😛
yup Fuji is dragging this old tech too long. IQ is still good, but I doubt it will be priced fair.
how much is this?
I predict $999 for the body.
Too expensive for body only…the xt1 is us$1200 body only. I think as rumoured, $700-800 body only
mmmmmmm This is going to make it hard to wait for the X-PRO2
Rumored $699 for the body only..
I am waiting for the profile and oblique view. Have you noticed the size of the top panel compared to the body? It looks narrower, suggesting verticals are slightly angled/slanted. So that “large” silver top may in reality look visually well incorporated into the whole package.
