PRESS RELEASES
FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Shigehiro Nakajima) is proud to announce that a new FUJINON LENS XF16mmF1.4 R WR will be added to the X-Series interchangeable lens line-up in mid-May 2015.
The lens has a fixed focal length of 16mm (24mm in 35mm format equivalent) and offers a dramatic wide field of view and stunning optical performance. The F1.4 maximum aperture delivers high image quality in low-light conditions and bokeh-rich macro photography with the minimum working distance of 15cm. Featuring high-speed autofocus, a weather- and dust-resistant structure that can work in temperatures as low as -10°C, and great portability thanks to its compact size, the shooting possibilities are further expanded.
The FUJINON fast aperture lens quintet is now complete. The XF16mmF1.4 R WR is the latest addition to the popular XF23mmF1.4 R, XF35mmF1.4 R, XF56mmF1.2 R, and XF56mmF1.2 R APD lens.

1. Main Features
(1) 13 elements in 11 groups and Nano GI Coating for high image quality
The optical design includes two aspherical elements and two ED (extra low-dispersion) elements, which reduce spherical and chromatic aberrations to deliver sharp, rich image quality even at the widest aperture of F1.4. The image quality is further enhanced by Fujifilm’s proprietary HT-EBC coating applied to the all lens surfaces and Nano GI Coating on the rear surface of G1 lens. This alters the refractive index between glass and air, to reduce ghosting and flare from diagonal incident light.

(2) Minimum working distance of 15cm
By getting closer to a subject the bokeh is enhanced and perspective is more dynamic, which gives the wide-angle photographer greater creativity. Use the XF16mm F1.4 R WR to photograph a plate of food with the restaurant in the background, for example, or a water droplet on a plant with forest in the background and both the subject and its surroundings can be captured at the same time. High image quality is achieved throughout the focus range by correcting various aberrations, even at minimum working distance of 15cm, and a Floating Focus System driven by two focus groups that work in conjunction with each other according to the working distance.
(3) High-speed autofocus as fast as 0.11sec*
A Rear Focusing System is used for high-speed autofocus. Autofocus, as fast as 0.11sec is achieved by a built-in high-torque DC coreless motor driving the focus unit. This makes the lens ideal for street shooting and portraiture.
- * Complies with CIPA (Camera & Imaging Products Association) guidelines, internal measurement, during high performance mode, according to Fujifilm as of 16th April 2015
(4) Focus ring with depth-of-field scale
The focus ring comes with a depth-of-field scale, which is perfect for street photographers. By calculating the distance and adjusting the aperture setting, users can shoot spontaneously.
(5) Weather, Dust, and Freeze Resistance
The weather-resistant structure features 9 seals in 8 areas on the lens barrel. These keep the lens protected from sudden rain, dust and splashes of water. And the XF16mmF1.4 R WR features a design that absorbs the temperature difference between the outer and inner parts of the lens to minimize the impact on optical parts and also uses electronic parts that guarantee operation in low temperatures down to -10°C.
(6) Lightweight and compact
At approx. 375g the lens is around 40% of the weight of its DSLR equivalent. This is great news for all photographers who want a versatile lens that delivers the highest optical performance in a very compact size.

(7) Accessories, Lens Hood LH-X16** Sold separately
The pursuit of premium quality extends to the high-precision finish of the metal lens hood, and multiplies the pleasure of ownership.
- ** Available in September 2015

Lens hood not included? That’s a bummer considering EVERY OTHER XF lens comes with a hood.
If I understand correctly a ‘flower shaped’ lenshood is included, like with the 14mm and the 18-55mm, but an optional metal lenshood is on it’s way.
Yeah, it looks like it. I jumped the gun. Petal hood is good enough. I’m not a fan of the rectangular metal hoods. since they can’t be reversed in storage.
Same here, but it’s great to have a choice.
The “normal” hood is included. Check my test here: https://maxdemartinocom.wordpress.com/
standard lens hood is included. there is “special hood” that will be sold later on…
plastic lens hood included. Metal lens hood named LH-X16 available in September
hmm..
Hybrid-viewfinder-non-intrusive hood not available until september, huh?
I can’t help but wonder what hybrid-viewfinder featuring product could be available by then.. :-O
My god, that alternative lens hood looks sexy…. Suppose I have to save up for that lens. I wish Fuji would supply metal hoods for all other XF lenses.
That is a welcome clarification.
I love my Nikkor AF-S 24mm F1.4 ED, a magical full frame lens and optically one of the best Nikon prime concepts. This equivalent Fujinon is lighter, I admit, but the form factor isn’t that different, yet it’s about half the weight. I really don’t expect the quality to be even a hair better – it would almost be a miracle. But looking at the price, well here we go. Every new released Fujinon is approaching the real market FF-glass prices, or is even in a few cases exceeding it. It boils down to the fact that investing in Fuji, only delivers a very clear advantage in weight, a bit in size (but don’t exaggerate that property) than really in pricing. At 10-20% more money you own a larger sensor solution with decades of legacy glass, experience and no firmware hassle to resolve less good design issues. I’m not saying Fujifilm is bad but the real pricing of all this new stuff starts bugging me a bit. I’m afraid that the so much referenced X-Pro2 and the next gen X-T2 will come at a price, that will exceed the D750 by the time it hits the market. I’m intensionally not referencing the A7 range, another competitive story hard to neglect. Pricewise, depreciation/year – as a pro, and technically, why still go Fuji. Fuji needs to work on more ‘clear advantages’ – let’s start with higher resolution sensors resolving the true power of these XFs – that includes also a proper RAW-support in Lr and a fully credible accessory line including flashes.
I can’t find a price for the Nikkor you cite that isn’t at least 50% hight than Fuji’s price on 16mm. I only checked Amazon & B&H, though. Even the used prices are significantly higher than Fuji. Where do you get a number like 10-20%?
Since Chatnoir’s post appears to be an attempt to justify his own decision to buy a Nikon FX camera and lenses, his statement that the price of the Nikon 24 mm f1.4 being only 10 to 20% more than the Fuji 16mm, when in the UK it is almost exactly 50% is perfectly understandable.
However that pales into insignificance when compared to his claim that the price of a new X-T2 will exceed that of the current D750. At present the D750 is at £1,750 and the X-T1 is at £880!
As stated above the price of the D750 is £1,750 when bought through a dealer selling Nikon UK stock, it can be bought through a UK grey market ‘bricks & mortar’ dealer for £1,270, 72% of the Nikon UK price. The X-T1 Fuji UK camera is £880, a grey market one is £760, 86% of the Fuji UK price. Perhaps he would now like to comment on the fact that this would suggest that Nikon are charging an unjustified premium to their UK customers.
Exactly. The first lens lens at Amazon that matched the Nikkor cited (wasn’t sure b/c of all the letters) was roughly twice as expensive as the Fuji. The second match was 50% higher, but may have been grey market; I’m not sure. Then I went to B&H, and found the same.
Maybe he’s talking about used prices, but that’s hardly comparable.
Insofar as Canon is concerned, the – admittedly quite good – 24mm 1.4 II costs significantly more that the Fuji, i.e. 1.5 times as much. No, this is not that expensive, considering that the price will go down relatively quickly and you’ll be able to get it around 850 USD or even lower.
Well done Fuji! Keeping greedyness under control :))) might buy it… In Japan :p
I want a Fuji made metal hood for my 14, 23, and 56 now, Fuji, look what you’ve done. 😉
Why is it that lens manufacturers use such crappy pictures to show off their new products. I mean ALL of them, not just Fuji. Leica maybe the worst.
