SAR reader Benny spotted that new Hasselblad “lusso” E-mount camera in a Hong Kong store. The luxurified A7r clone sells for around HKD40000 which is about $5,150. Not as terribly expensive as previous Hasselblad Sony clones if you consider the 28-70mm FE lens a nice box and strap are included in the final price.

Current Hasselblad Sony clones are:

  1. Must be that shop in Harbour City at Tsim Sha Tsui. That shopping centre is frequented by shoppers from Mainland China with plenty of money to burn. Gold plated Leica cameras there to be had if you are feeling even more flush.

    This plebeian will opt for the A7RII and Sony-Zeiss 35 1.4 with change to spare.

    P.S. I was told that the 90mm G macro should be available to have on 25 June in HK (for 8390 HKD) and that there is a demonstration unit to use in the Sony stores.

  2. Well, at least they get the highest scoring sensor on DxO. Not like they’re buying a canon knockoff.

  3. How much for the unfinished grip with the rough base? I’d like to have that attached to my RX1. I’ll resell it for £9000 and call it the RX1-9000-BFC, nothing cosmic in the name so I’m safe.

    1. It does, but Hassy doesn’t have a concierge service like Vertu. So, you couldn’t call Hasselblad and say: “Hey, I wan’t to use my cam with a supermodel, get me Heidi Klum tomorrow”. But, if you have a Vertu, that may be arranged for you.

  4. Fugly. I know Hasselblad, sadly, is a shell of it’s former self, but has it really got THIS bad? I thought all this was behind them with the new CEO – It’s like they don’t even care about the damage being done to the company.

  5. They don’t come with the 24-70mm (though they should like the HV), they come with the plastic kit lens. Nothing screams luxury like a plastic Sony kit lens (even the Lunar had the foil coated kit lens, which while not premium at least somewhat looks the part).

  6. People still digesting a7rii and rx series cameras announcement. Who cares about hasselblad? (even auto correction doesn’t show it.)

    1. Well the problem is, people DO care about Hasselblad. They use to make some of the best cameras in the world and seeing this happen kinda sucks.

    1. Does anyone knows if Hasselblad have issued a full re-branded lenses line-up for their cameras ? I believe they should do rather than direct their clients towards the closest Sony store… And of course the focusing ring should be made of wood or upholstered with crocodile genitals leather for the sake of good taste.

  7. How much is the Hasselblad branded 28-70 alone? Maybe I can afford at least a bit of “luxury” for my A7R II.

  8. I think it is a noce looking camera, if I only had the money to spend on it, just then….
    I would buy the Sony A7rII instead as I don’t buy a camera that is more jewellery then camera.
    For the people who think Hasselblad went to the dogs, they have to look at this: http://www.dpreview.com/articles/8735671015/hasselblad-returns-to-roots-with-new-aerial-camera-series
    or look here: http://www.hasselblad.com/
    They still make great cameras too. Hasselblad is just expending their camera bussiness to the rich who want to show of their cameras, and the original Hasselblads look nerdy to them, but these jewels are just what they want. Remember, it is not what the photographer wants, it is what the rich want (and no not all of them have this bad taste)

  9. Can someone help me figure out the marketing here?
    1. Does Hasselblad think its buyers don’t realize they’re buying Sony clones at 3x the price?
    2. Do Hasselblad buyers realize they’re buying Sony clones at 3x the price?
    3. Do Hasselblad buyers think their friends won’t realize they’ve bought a Sony clone at 3x the price?
    4. Do Hasselblad buyers care at all about photography, or just showing off to their (seemingly ignorant) friends?

    1. Forget the camera, this is like jewels for the buyers, jewels that cam make a nice picture too. It has nothing to do with photography for them at all. They show with this camera to the world: I’m rich and I don’t know what to do with my money….
      They don’t care that they can buy a Sony for way less, they want this toy as it shouts: I AM RICH!

    2. I wonder the same. It’s almost like they are going after a market that is literally clueless to the fact it’s a camera that has already been updated with a newer model.

    3. Nobody is really buying these for photography. They are luxury items, created with a purpose to impress others and stroke your own ego. People buying these do not care (or even know) if they are just re-branded Sony cameras. What matters is the Hasselblad label and the price tag. Just like the designer customized phones, smart watches or headsets.

      So to answer above:
      1. It is irrelevant as the buyers are really buying Hasselblad label for the luxury price, not a camera;
      2. See above;
      3. See above;
      4. When asked, they will tell you that they care about photography, but in reality it’s only showing off.

      1. This is what I suspect. Maybe Leica is going about things all wrong. Why waste all that money on R&D when they could just rebrand Panasonics and go after the same clientele.

        1. That’s exactly what they do for a good portion of their lineup. But, the markup over the originals are not as ludicrous as with Hasselblad.

  10. It wouldn’t be so bad if this camera was based on the A7R II but it’s not, it’s based on the soon to be obsolete MKI. Are there really people out there who are so rich that they can’t spend 5 minutes googling to find out that you can get a much better camera for half the price, or at least get their personal shopper to do so? Or, do these people not actually care about how good the camera underneath is?

  11. I’m sure Hasselblad fixed A7R shutter shock issue…
    They made a leaf shutter instead. A real leaf shutter… In addition to the wood grip, they
    made a shutter of real Swedish Whitebeam leaves… Really silent….

  12. Does it actually work? Does it really take pictures and record movies?
    I mean, it looks like an utterly ludicrous and unbelievably overpriced paperweight….
    If it really works, it must be an indoor camera, because I really can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t feel embarrassed taking along this camera in public…
    Maybe only people like Dolce and Gabbana would buy this camera…

  13. They actually took my advice! Don’t even promote these in the western markets, just ship them to HK where the idiot elites can add them to their collection of scam luxury bullshit. In the West these just sully the brand, in Asia, apparently they’ll buy any god damn thing with a fancy box.

    1. No need to insult rich people from HK. Most of them got rich, because they are no idiots at all.

      The problem is not the fact that they “rip off” (in our eyes) rich people with obsolete tech. There is absolutely nothing wrong with selling a technically obsolete product in a beautiful designer “shell” made of precious materials. (As long as someone buys it.)

      The problem with this Sonyblad crap is, that it is so badly made. The design is so horrible, I have no words. Not just that, it’s just plain embarrassing.

      Why being a racist di*k? Not only Asians buy expensive things in a fancy box. The thing is, this Hasselblad crap isn’t fancy.

      1. Racism, nice try. It would be ‘racist’ to say that all Asians are predisposed to make poor decisions, even Asian-American’s etc… They’re good at math blah blah.

        It’s not racist to say that luxury products sell well in Asia. The nouveau riche class is always ready to part with large sums (not very large for them in context though) for status symbols. High priced watches, handbags, clothing…bullshit mostly to impress friends. Pointing out a socioeconomic and cultural problem is not the same thing as being racist. There certainly ARE some Americans that want these things, but here being so flagrantly wealthy is generally frowned upon, which is why The Rich Kids of Instagram get so much scorn.

        You’re exactly right that Hasselblad is selling a bill of goods here, and that’s what I’m saying, but I’m going further by also calling out the rich twats who don’t do any research and are buying up these travesties. They’re in Asia, so I’m calling them rich Asians.

  14. i actually think that in a camera store with so many generic looking black cameras, the silver top and wooden grip actually makes it stand out! not the mention the sturdy case making it attract people with $$$$ and care less about camera specifications…..
