Andrei: “I’m Andrei, a happy new owner of the A7s. As a long time reader, I wanted to share with you a slow motion S-Log 2 evening rain test and some first thoughts. https://vimeo.com/102817633
Everything was shot at 120 fps 270p with ISO values over 3200. Light was less than ideal and I had a hard time getting perfect exposure because of the pouring rain. The lens is the Sony Zeiss Vario-Tessar T* FE 24-70mm F4 ZA OSS. Shot in S-Log 2, with modified profile, graded with Film Convert.
Observations:
– The lens is much better than some say. It’s just not as great as the 55mm 1.8 or 35mm 2.8, but OSS is very good and colour reproduction very nice. I’m not a pixel-peeper.
– The A7s held up well in the pouring rain, I only had an umbrella so lots of raindrops spilled on the camera and the lens.
– After some 2 hours of shooting, some blue hot pixels appeared which I noticed only afterwards. Scared, I thought of sending the camera back as it is still new, but then I read online that sony maps out “bad” pixels in software and fixes them on the fly. To force a remap just set the date to a month in advance and turn the camera off. It will take a picture before shutting off, after which they’re magically gone. You can set the date back afterwards. Hope the sensor is fine though…”

I used this lens for a week and sent it back to Sony. You are right: This lens provides excellent image quality all over the frame. But it is a too large piece of lens. I do not want to walk around with an stovepipe. I prefer fast prime lenses. I fear Sony will offer us an A7t, A7u,A7v,A7w etc before we will see any prime lens like 1.8FE100 / 1.8FE135 / 2.8FE180…
I think the missing piece of the puzzle is Sony branded lenses – I’d expect zeis. So far they’ve only released 2 (the kit zoom and the 70-200). Hopefully we’ll see more, which
Jorge is right – the 50ZA is in fact an overlooked lens. Not too many reviews available and not being tested at DxO yet.
I love this lens. Sony-Zeiss typically it gives you nicest colors, sharpness over the frame (except wide open to f2) and snappy contrast.
Don’t know why some people diss it of being too large for a 50mm prime. Yes, it is a solid piece of lens and anything but small. But I use it on both the A99 and the A7R and feel it very convenient to work with on both.
For those owning both mounts I recommend to give it a try.
Especially compared to the Sigma, which is a bit a beast for a 50mm…
The Sigma Art series is indeed extraordinary imaging quality.
So far I have only had a chance to test the 35/1.4, and I was quite impressed about it its capabilities wide open.
Having read some blogs about the new 50/1.4 I am convinced it will be as good once released in A mount version.
For me personally it is only option as long as no Sony-Zeiss or G is available, as I am absolutely happy with them (own almost all). Any extra in technical image quality what another brand might be able to give me would be for my style and expectation only marginal, and I am confident that images captured with Zeiss are hard to be beaten.
I’d agree there. The 35/1.4 is a pleasure to use on my A77ii (especially wide open), but I do notice the lack of ssm if I’ve been using my 24/2…
@DirkB: what has the 50ZA to do with the Sony 70-200mm F4 G series FE Lens Review?
Make my day…
Do you know the meaning of “TidBits”?
Secondly, have a look at the end of Andrea’s article providing a link of Jorge Torralba’s view on it.
At last – reply to my post instead of creating a new one referring to it.
Und wenn Du Probleme hast, das Geschriebene zu verstehen, zitiere ich gern Dieter Nuhr für Dich…
Ohh, you are German! That explains all…
Keep your head!
I send a post to a topic of this thread, and you try to be a smartass although obviously not having read the thread until its end…
Instead of laughing about my sarcasm (as far as I remember you are German, too, so I thought you’ll get it) you are in need of being provocative?
the only thing I get is: you are a dedicated cray alalist…
BTW: I live 60 miles north west of London.
If I mixed with another person here – sorry.
As you may have noticed, I am no native english tongue, so could you please let me know what a “cray alalist” is meant to be?
However I assume it being used as an insult.
“Cray alalist” doesn’t mean anything. It’s probably a typo.
I had to send my 70-200FE back. It had fine image quality, but it spun in the tripod collar when I had it mounted. Has anyone else had this issue? It made it borderline unusable for tripod work.
I hope you didn’t forget to turn the screw 😉
Mine is very tight, impossible to turn it without very high force.
That makes me feel better about sending it back. It wasn’t a free spin, but while handling the camera it would drift quite a bit. I wish they had screw knob instead of a locking knob (with only one tightness).
