Exclusive: First Sony A7r RAW files for download!

Until now we only saw A7r JEPG samples on the web. But I guess most future A7r owners are eagerly waiting to see RAW file samples. I am glad to report that SAR is the first site where you can get them! You can download them here at Wetransfer (408 MB). Feel free to create download mirrors so that we can all download them faster! You can open the images on Sony Image data converter (here for win and here for mac). The images have been taken with the 28-70mm Sony kit lens.

Image Copyright: You are free to use the images for your personal use. Please do not repost these images on other sites without permission asked at sonyalpharumors@gmail.com.
Please note: You are watching images shot on a camera with non finalized firmware and you open it with a non A7r optimized converter.

Support SonyAlphaRumors: After months of FF mirrorless rumor work I would be glad if you can support my work by making your A7-A7r purchase by using these links below. I will earn a small commission and you don’t pay one single penny more! Thanks!

      1. At first, I was disappointed that I couldn’t get the kit lens with the a7R. But my brother quickly pointed out that it would be a waste to even buy the kit lens. He pointed out I’d probably do better off with my NEX 16-50mm (24-70mm equiv) kit lens and wait for the Zeiss, for such a high resolution sensor.

  1. Zeiss says in its Facebook page comment that:

We are currently working on manual focus lenses for these new full-frame CSCs. They will have an interface to provide EXIF data to the camera. They are expected to be in stores by the end of 2014. However, we cannot provide any additional infos right now.

    Best regards,
    ZEISS Lenses Team

    1. in the korean presser there was also a Zeiss announcement that they will release full frame mirrorless lenses in 2014

        1. Thanks for that good news from Zeiss! I am looking forward to an ultra wide 18mm or 21mm FE lens… either Touit or better yet a super sharp Otus!

          1. Thank you Andreea for the raw files. They look quite good, surprisingly good after I saw yesterday the jpg files. The out of the camera jpg’s look like “crap”, excuse my language, they are by far the worst I have ever seen. I hope that in the final version of the camera, the jpg algorithms will be different.

  2. Damn, the more I see various images of the A7 at different perspectives, the more I like the design. When it was first revealed I quickly wished they had maintained an NEX look, even at the expense of an overall height increase to accommodate the viewfinder. Sticking larger lenses on the body though, and that hump on top instantly helps to visually offset the added size of a large lens. Anything larger than primes, I’ll admit, on an NEX7 body, does start to look very strange.

However, sticking something small on the A7 like the 35 prime looks so out of place to me. It almost seems like the mount is too small for the body. The lens then, almost has to bulge out a tad like the 55mm to look proportionate.

I have to say though, it’s nice to be able to only have to nit pick about design issues (until more reviews come out) since it means the hardware front is up to snuff. I’m seriously loving the amount of physical buttons and customizable options available.

    1. I know where they were taken and trust me everyone who could get the camera was watched by 2 Sony guys and had like 2 minutes for doing these!

      1. I may know that location as well but the results from the kit zoom can not clearer. At 1/160s and fairly bright daylight, most corners are NOT sharp with hints of smearing.

NEX-6/NEX-7 plus 24/1.8 (same location 😉 ) has done a far better job for me.

        1. Shutter of 1/200 is enough for blur free pics in 100% magnification. Just compare the center with the boarders… Center is much sharper then the borders! This has nothing to do with shake!

      1. There are samples all o er the net with every lens. They all look bad. It seems like you really want to like it and give it more credit than it deserves. As it stands a fuji x or even the em1 files look much sharper. People just want the full frame placebo effect, if its ff it automatically must be better, despite the proof right in front of them

        1. There are a lot of soft photos out there. #14 in this link from Singlag looks very sharp: http://www.sendspace.com/file/7b7f0o

Still, I would like to see review/test/examples where all of the photos are sharp. I don’t have a steady hand yet my biggest problem is usually having a difficult time deciding which of my photos I like best. It’s going to be disappointing if I am reduced to hunting through a lot of mushy, might have been, great pictures to find a couple of sharp ones.

I get 100% sharp pictures with my 645D (36mpx camera) at 1/60. It’s a heavy camera but I am small with weak wrists and it makes my hands less steady to hold it up. Maybe it’s the rear curtain shutter that makes such a big difference?

        2. Don’t talk about a placebo effect of fullframe without ever having used one.

The issue here is not FF, it’s the lens everyone’s talking about. Not sure if you know but lenses can be changed in this camera 😉

          1. First, Ive had just about every full frame you can think of except the nikon D3/4. Second, there is such a thing as a soft sensor.
Third, Its a placebo effect. The web is filled with full frame shots with cheap tokinas and tamrons that are soft as sh*t but the owners claim are amazingly sharp because theyre full frame. In most cases the shots from the APS C they ditched are sharper. It all comes down to lenses optimized for their sensors, the sharpest shots ive seen this year have not been from any full frame. A bigger file with more pixels is not automatically a sharper file.
At any rate I downloaded raw files with the kit zoom, the 35mm 2.8 and the 55mm zeiss. they all look very very soft. So it matter very little that you an change the lenses as you so sarcastically put it. Or are all the lenses sh*t according to you? because that even worse.

  3. Admin: Please put up a paypal link. I will be happy to send a small contribution. 🙂

The link to my country for A7r orders are still not there and I ordered it direct on day 1.

    1. no need for paypal. I only ask for paypal when I have major expenses like server upgrades or so on. Just pay me a drink when I pass to your country 😉

          1. Buy first, think later! Will try both (if I get them both) and off-load the one I’m not keeping!

        1. I cannot open the We Transfer file. I have tried to open it to LR4 and 5, CS6, Windows Media Player, etc. Image Data Converter gives me a ‘run time error’ when I attempt to open it and shuts down. Any kind advise would be welcome, please.

          1. I also purchased both. I am hoping reviews that compare their ISO and handling will be revealed soon then I will cancel whichever I feel won’t suit me before it ships. I hate returning items.

  4. “our reader Geert” didn’t succeed in masking the files this time 🙁
The file manipulation worked for premature A99 and A77 RAW files, but I’m having problems with these. Maybe I’m overlooking something.

    1. No! Just 28-70. The 24 Elmar raws are from the VG900 FF camcorder 24MP and as reference tehre is a M9 dng file from the same subject. But Andrea didnt upload these. What I can tell you is that at least on the VG900 the 24 elmar has severe crner smearing but no red edge! On the A7r it schould be better in terms of corner sharpness!

  5. Cool, so $2000 for the camera, then another $2000 for a non-shitty lens to use with it.. sounds like a Sony product.

    1. I find the quality of video capture quite unimpressive, if not disappointing. In this video as well as in those from TheCameraStore and that Light & Wind thing, both posted previously here on the blog. Videos seem mushy and gloomy and not very differentiated in the darker areas. Well, all those are pre-production samples, but does not seem to be an uber video machine.

      1. I thought that the quality was rather good, especially for YouTube. I wonder why they didn’t upload that video to Vimeo… video quality is much better there.

        1. Question:
Are 50p(PAL) and 60p(NTSC) frame rates supported in all countries ?
          The specification on sony.eu states:
“The a7 series supports both PAL and NTSC movie recording”, while other websites suggest
the A7(r) video standard is linked to the specific region (US,EU) and cannot be changed.
This may also affect the EVF refresh rate, so EU models show more flicker than US models.

          1. Europeans can understand PAL and NTSC. So it can be stated on European sites that equipment will do either. It seems that putting the same information on US sites leads to confusion with closeted people asking what PAL is. So they leave it out.

          2. Be sure if you require both. The North American a99 only does 24, 30 and 60 fps whereas the European version does 24,25, 30, 50 and 60 fps. Obviously the hardware is capable but sony won’t give us North American users the PAL option (it may be due to import taxation). It sucks though.

          3. The internal clock can do 50Hz and 60Hz and will switch to one another after system restart. Problem is the difference the PAL/NTSC video selection is being handled between pro and consumer hardware. On compatible (WorldCam spec) pro machines, you get the “50i/60i Sel” option and after restart you don’t get any nag screen. This feature is shared between -E and -U pro models.

However, things get VERY different on consumer hardware. On NTSC models you ONLY get the usual 60/(30)/24. On PAL models you get 50/25 by default as well as an on-demand NTSC mode which allows for 60/(30)/24, but after system restart you also get the nag screen “Recording in NTSC mode.” This is BAD, because given how the firmware is setup, you basically are stuck with a native PAL machine with on-demand NTSC mode, but the reciprocal (ie. native NTSC model with on-demand PAL) does NOT exist.

So all consumer-grade -U models do not get the pseudo-WorldCam treatment, which is unfair to customers in those areas.

  6. my concern is the lenses. any idea if Sigma has any plans to release Sigma 35mm f1.4 full frame lens for Sony E mount A7 soon? Wish Sigma could hear us.

  7. These pictures look terrible (this shouldn’t have been released to the public). Even at 1/200 there are camera shakes causing blur. It’s a huge mistake not to design some kind of IBIS.

Also, these pictures also shows slow AF. It missed focus on the guy walking towards the camera and also on the guy walking across the camera with the dog.

    1. You don´t seem to have much of a clue! How do you know where the focus point was supposed to be? Who said that focus is on the dog or the guy? Focus is on the Building that sais Gerry Weber that is 300m away! Fot this purpouse focusing on a guy 5 m away is stupid because the goal is to see if the lens is enought for the 36mp Sensor! And the fotos clearly show that its not enough!

      1. Didn’t know it was focused to the Gerry Weber sign because that was also not very sharp and looked out of focus to me. I was also looking that the orange bus sign under the #6. You can see the camera shake with the guy and the dog when he shot it at 70mm. Both the Gerry Weber sign and the bus sign had motion blur.

If I was to take this picture I would make sure to focus the person and all of the background. The guy walking towards the camera was shot at 28mm and at f5.6. You said he was 5m away so that means (that what the DOF master tells me) it’s possible to get everything in focus as it shows “Infinite” behind the subject.

Anyway, all these pictures show poor results and should be taken down. Nothing seems to be in focus in any of the shots. Can you tell me what is suppose to be in focus with the person with glasses? I think I might found one thread by his neck and that is not even sharp.

  8. Capture One 7 (free trial avaliable on the site) can open these files and able to produce somewhat better results compared to JPEGs.

The main problem is – author man goal (as I can deduce) was the stealth, not the quality of examples. 🙁 Almost all photos have blur from movement or misplaced focus.

http://forum.ixbt.com/post.cgi?id=attach:20:30787:643:1.jpg there is an example of 100% crop RAW/JPEG quality from the center of the file.

  9. once again… why do people continually post Raw photos of inconsequential things with no real set focal points or points of interest? Happens over and over and over.

If you’re going to provide photo’s to show a camera’s ability, shoot something that shows some of the camera’s abilities.

      1. No no focus was supposed to be on the background and NOT on the peaople. Focusing on the peolple does not make sense here because if u focus on the people in front then u wouldnt be able to see the boarder performance

        1. I’m just going to wait until Sony Store has it so I can go check it out in person.

I don’t think these pictures are “TESTS” for corner sharpness because it looks like someone just walked outside and took some snaps. If it was for sharpness he would have taken some shots of the charts sitting there on tripods. I’m pretty sure he can frame them in the corner and snap off some corner sharpness test but why would he because the center is not even sharp.

I’m a newbie but if I walked outside and shot some with an OM-D E-M1 I bet the camera would chose the person as the AF and took the shot and everything would be in focus. The DR might not be as good but I will have a keeper.

I do want to move into a Full Frame camera and have money burning in my pocket but I don’t want to make another mistake like I did with the RX1 where it always focused ont he background and not the person. Yes, I know I can use center AF point instead of multi but I don’t want to aim and bob.

          1. Did you try that with an OM-D?
AF behavious depends on how you set it up.
If you select Spot AF, it will focus on (usually the closest to the camera) object that is covered by that one selected AF spot.
If you select Area AF, the camera will typically select the closest object in that whole large area.

  10. Is there a reason the A7R was tested with a lens that doesn’t come with that camera? Makes sense that the A7 would be tested with this lens, and the A7R with the 35?

  11. Over 40 comments and not a single comment on the dynamic range? Unbelievable.

I’m at work now, so I can’t test it myself. Can someone please say something before I go bonkers? 🙂

    1. difficult to say, the photos are quite flat so there’s just a little latitude
I converted to tiff using the sony software.
pushed the shadows to the maximum. and still looks clean.
I don’t think there will be any discernible difference with the D800E in terms of sensor performance.
      this is obviously excellent news.

      1. exactly the way these RAWs were supposed to be viewed! I will mention it one more time thou at least the 28mm shot and the 35 is not blured because of shake! And all are focused on the Gery Weber Buidling in the center of the image. This is effectiv infinity at 28mm f5.6 so u can get at least an idea of the boarder performance of the Kit lens. Here is a m9 shot just to show u how sharp this place can look with just 18mp:
        http://www.file-upload.net/download-8192294/m9.jpg.html

        canon 6d 24-70 mk2 at 24mm 2.8
        http://www.file-upload.net/download-8192298/canon-24-70mk2-at-24-f-2.8.jpg.html

          1. Did you look at the leaves above the busstop in the center? The A7r samples shows much more details. Your samples may look a bit shaper at this resolution, but downsize the sony`s and they are as sharp. (or use a better lens on the sony and avoid shake)

        1. With that said I think this camera will be a BEAST onceall the raw software is updated and we have SEL25 or 55 to test it with!!!

        2. Thanks for these two pictures and to me those two looks much sharper.

Look at the crosswalk with the blue arrow sign. The person in that cross walk is in focus and so is the GW sign. Also the Motorcycle is in focus.

Now look at the Sony shots. The people in the cross walks are blurry. You can also compare it with the clock on the right side. What’s funny is that those 2 pix you uploaded was shot at 2.8 and 4.8 and has the clock and GW sign in focus. Shouldn’t the Sony at 5.6 have more in focus?

          1. Nevermind. Maybe it’s the higher shutter because I don’t see any camera shakes in the picture you posted at 1/500 and 1/1600.

          2. well I cant tell u but i dont feel like the sony a7r pic at 28 f5.6 has any problems with focus. Its just a soft kit lens for 36mp sensor! I think the one at 50mm is focused at 5m aprox. its missfocused.

Its a pre production camera so i dont know whats the problem.

    1. Not really. It’s the bread and butter of photography, way more important than stuff like AF speed and FPS. The ultimate goal should be to make a sensor that can capture the same high dynamic range as human eyes.

    2. Dynamic range is overrated?? Not for a wedding photographer like myself. Shooting outdoors at an event in a high contrast situation I can flatten out Sony RAW files to maintain details of skin and white wedding dresses that would otherwise be blown out, and maintain shadow detail in black tuxes.

The dynamic range of my a99 over Canon products is one of the big reasons I love my a99 so much.

This is also critical for video. I have filmed videos with my a99 side by side with a 5d MK II and MK III and the a99 is able to produce a much flatter look that maintains both highlight and shadow detail. This allows for greater flexibility when editing.

      1. The same situation for me taken concert photos – even the A65 can do some “tricks” because dynamic range that those bigger Canons can’t do… I see a lot of concert photos from colleagues with 5DMkII/III that look awfully “flat” because the light situation on a rock stage is kind of extreme and though the 5DMkII/III are much better considering noise they have problems with the dynamic range if exposure isn’t set extremely correct (and that is near to impossible in the era of big LED spots with quite fast changes in lighting…).

  12. Any idea of how many stops of dynamic range we’re looking at? How do they compare with the Nikon equivalents (D600 and D800e)????

Also, will Sony have to come out with a new sensor for the higher end alpha FF (not the E mount) as the light angles will be different for the non-e mount?

  13. Its almost like they want sony to look bad. I wish sony would send me a camera to test. I am surely not the best but I would do a much better job than these people.

  14. I heard that the A7 has rear curtain shutter while the A7r does not. Can this be confirmed? I am set on the AA-less 36mpx however the A7 might perform better for handheld night photography. I won’t cancel my preorder but I might end up returning it and saving for a Leica. I adore Sony but renting the Monochrome and owning a 645D has really spoiled me. Every picture is so sharp and draws you in.

    1. Heidi that’s also my “fear”. I enjoy taking pictures in dim light, and I need a silent (at least not loud) shutter noise. These first news are sad.. I don’t know if I can go for a Monochrome.

      1. The shutter noise is way too loud. The A7/A7r won’t work for weddings, concerts, street photography, sleeping newborns and possibly lifestyle candids of babies and small children. On the bright side, daytime still lifes, group photos, family photography and studio work with the A7r should be gorgeous. Night photography with the A7 and long exposure with a tripod should be comparable to the MarkIII.

  15. Whoever gets the kit lens with the A7 is crazy. “look at my fancy 24MP 1700 dollar camera with a crappy 200 dollar lens attached.”

    1. I bought the kit lens along with the 35mm 2.8 because in the past the kit ships sooner. But I was just going to throw away the kit lens when I get it….you want it?

      1. Hmm.. Maybe so. I have downloaded and played with some raw files taken by a preproduction A7 with the 28-70 lens and they look great! Actually quite sharp across the frame. Sure, I’d agree it’s probably not the greatest lens for a 36mp sensor, but I think I’ll find it more than usable on my A7! I’ve read a couple reviews that compare it to the Fuji 18-55 kit lens in quality. If that’s the case there are I’m sure quite of few of us that will be more than happy with it. For anyone reading, I would not judge this lens by these crappy photos taken on a 36mp camera. Look for some taken by the A7 and I think you’ll see this is actually a really decent lens! Just my thoughts. Tesch, if you’re really just going to throw it out, I’d take it! 🙂

      2. I’ll take your kit lens! I’m planning on ordering the A7 in a month or two, so by the time your 35 comes, I could use your kit lens for a while….if you’re serious, email me and we can keep it out of the landfill.

  16. Not worth much to pay attention to testphotos that are so randomly taken. Wait for real tests. Logically we know what Sony RX1 and Nikon D800E are capable of. No reason to believe anything but the A7/R being on the same level.
Then we have lenses: As usual Sony underperforms by presenting a lens roadmap not informing us which lenses, just how many. Buying into a new system is an investment and Sony are not able to give the nessecary information. Not very professional from a manufacturer that claims it want to have professionals as customers…..

    1. It’s not that they’re not going to release lenses… giving a concrete roadmap for lenses for a system that hasn’t reached real users is a very arrogant and a silly thing to do. It’s far better if Sony lets people use these cameras and make them speak up about what they need… rather than tell them what they should used, isn’t it?

Especially with the New line, Sony has listened a lot in the past. No reason why it should change.

Try to think from both sides instead of thinking like a 13 year old.

  17. At least we know now, why Sony is bundling the lens only with the A7…

Besides the fact, that these are some of the worst samples of a new camera I have ever seen regarding composition and set focus, the images are more or less meaningless, because I am pretty sure, that the lens is kinda crap on the big sensor.

  18. Alex and Andreas thank you for making the RAW files available. Looks like the sensor is good in terms of dynamic range but the Sony Kit lens is an absolute dog. Hence why they don’t see it with the A7r because they know that it can not resolve well. Still surprised just how bad it is!

  19. I think a lot of 100% viewed blurrynes will be caused by shutter speed of 1/100 or less paired with our hands.
I think it will be pretty hard to make 100% sharp 36MP casual photos.

And then there is very low DOF of the FF sensor.

I saw A7r photo taken with 55mm f1.8 on that other site of a girl just slightly turned aand one of her eyes was compleately oof.

I am pretty sorry all lenses dont have OIS since ibis was not possible in these models

  20. I like how most of the time sample shots are posted here the comments erupt with how bad the photographer is. In about a month though we will finally see everyone’s test shots.

  21. Thanks to singlang for uploading the new RAW files have taken the liberty to process one of them.

The A7R and Zeiss 35mm seem to be A LOT better than the horrible standard zoom and the files remind me very much of the Nikon D800E. It looks like there is a lot more noise reduction applied as default even in Capture One which I think has caused most of the complaints.

Have processed one of the files with no noise reduction in Capture Pro and then imported into Lightroom – it is obvious that there are too many light sources with different colour temperatures when the image was taken – a perfect white balance is almost impossible to achieve without PP.

Have a look at the donwload link and enlarge to 100% to see what the sensor and lens seem to be really capable off which is very encouraging and what I was hoping for.

    http://www.sendspace.com/file/owzcl9

    1. Thanks Nico! Looks very good to me, although it’s hard to judge a picture I would never take myself. More sample pictures will be available soon, I hope, with more complex structures and normal (existing) light.

  22. After playing with raw files, all i can say is what a crappy kit lens. I’d rather use tokina 28-70 and carry little bit of weight and bulk with me

  23. most of you already know this, but still – if you’re used to watching say 16mp 1:1, viewing 36mp 1:1 will seem a lot worse than it actually is when it comes to sharpness and noise etc. just saying.

  24. All these people who are whining that they are professionals who demand better performance and more from Sony are very likely not proper professionals. If you’re a real pro, you’d already have cameras and lenses that you’re more than comfortable with and wouldn’t talk as if your livelihood is crippled because of how Sony is doing the FF Nex line. So these whiners are probably amateurs who are shooting with iPhones/microFourThirds, day dreaming about shooting some trashy wedding at a paintball joint in return for an invitation 😀
