2011 is almost over and now it’s your turn to chose THE Sony camera of the year! What is the coolest, most featured most likeable of all new photographic tools? Is it the top fast and ultra high resolution A77? Is it the “rangefinderstyled” NEX-7? Is it the cheap but super image quality NEX-5n? is it the tiniest of all NEX cameras, the NEX-C3?
The battle starts, let’s see who wins!

P.S.: I had a damn hard time to pick up my favorite!

picked A65 as the most balanced cost/feature-wise all-purpose camera
+1
Unfortunately the A65 uses the old 15-point AF system from the A580 and A55, which probably means inconsistent AF resulting in backfocus 90% of the time, which for obvious reasons is mostly noticeable with fast lenses.
If Sony had included AF micro-adjust so that my fast primes don’t backfocus most of the time, then I’d have considered it…
I made my pick a few days ago:
It’s the A580!
It’s a poll for the cameras launched in 2011. A580 was launched in 2010, along with a55.
+1
+1 is for Peter. (lol)
Can we really count the 7 what with it not really being released this year? I don’t think a handful counts…
Yea NEX-7, but how many people really use a compact interchangeable lens camera for serious photography? Or leisure everyday photography for that price?
i do, and it’s not even digital
Based on how well it’s selling I’d say quite a few people do. I pre-ordered it, but thanks to the flood it didn’t arrive then that Fuji LX leak happened. So I canceled the order so I can wait till January to see what Fuji is going to offer. However, if Fuji doesn’t impress me then I will order the NEX-7 for a second time.
I for one am done with DSLR’s. I simply fail to see the point of them these days. As soon as mirrorless cameras AF speed catches up that will be the last real advantage of DSLR’s (and Nikon has already managed to do that apparently). So in closing, yeah, I think you’ll be seeing a lot of people using $1000+ mirrorless cameras from now on.
What’s the problem with using for serious photography? I think it’s the best landscape camera today. As for leisure, depends on your income. Some people buy sports cars for leisure.
it is neccessary to add 5n without clicking 🙂
How many will start?
If I had to replace my A550 I would choose an imaginary A590 (as an A580 successor with 20MP for maximum 600€). I don’t like the NEXs (too tiny, for women hands 😉 neither SLTs (short battery time and A65/A77 too expensive for that JPEG quality). So I wait for a serious price drop or will give Canon a chance 😉
Short battery time? On my A77 I experience a full day of battery – and that is:
– Shooting a lot of video
– Having it on stand-by
– Using an Eye-Fi X2 Pro for easy upload (but requiring the camera to be on)
I have two batteries, but almost never have to change battery during a day – even with really heavy use.
It is ok not to like the A77 / A65 – taste differs. But disliking it for battery time is just uninformed.
On a more debatable issue I do not understand why people care about JPG-quality on a prosumer camera like the A77. The only times I shoot JPEG is if I use my iPad to edit – and then it is mostly for fun. But at those occasions I shoot RAW+JPEG and choose to upload the JPEG’s to the iPad and save the RAWs for my computer at home. Works like a charm.
no problem Adam, but I just read that the battery in the A77 lasts for +-500 pictures. On my A550 I can easily shoot more than 1000 pictures with one battery, so the same batt in this 2 years old body lasts 2 times longer 😉 It’s the NEX series that I don’t like that much because I really find them to small for my fingers an as I have quite a few Sigma lenses for the Alpha why should I buy once again a bunch of lenses for a NEX. The A77 has the right size but I just don’t want to spend 1400€ for the A77 (or NEX7) as we all know that any new SONY APSC-body will quickly drop in price after just a few months. Sorry but I will stay with my “good enough for me” A550 for the moment.
Wow! A majority who voted must be the reviewers! They chose the NEX-7! LOL!
I’m not too sure on this Poll. While I would like to vote either the A77 or Nex 7, both camera are barely out to the masses.
Those lucky ones to get them early needs more time to use them too before an accurate selection can be made.
And I doubt some of the vote on the A77 or Nex 7 are based on actual usage.
So I can only vote the NEX-5N over the A65. Those NEX 7 votes seems to me are purely paper based.
greenieadi, Ive had my a77 for a month or two, can very safely and very accurately say it gets my vote 😉

I had to take a picture of my Nex, with my A300. Astonishing how quickly you get used to the Nex and how inconvenient the big SLR feels right now…
I think Nex (and its successors) has the future: Nex-7 for me!
A900 + new firmware hi-iso + live view is still the best…
A900 and live view is totally out of the question already as its physically impossible – unless it’s EVF and slt which many of you diss.
I really miss A700/850/900’s ergonomics and small, red, unintrusive focus points though.
Funny, last I was looking at samples A900 vs NEX-7 samples. It was amazing how much sharper the NEX-7 samples were. I was taken aback by that. I love my A900, but the NEX-7 is something special.
A77 without a doubt. A ton of features and big ISO performance upgrade from my A550. I just love this CAM !!!!
Hmmm Nex7 may be mark as 2012 year camera?
hands down nex-5n. nex-7 & a77 should be cameras of next yr
Exactly. It’s like giving out the oscar before anyone saw the movie.
As for the Nex7 maybe – but the A77 is widely in stock all over the world. I have had mine since 17/10 – so over 2 months now. And I still love it – or maybe love it even more.
The A77 has been out for months! I can walk into Jessops now and buy one. No idea why people think it shouldn’t be included…
Andrea, here is a croatian review with pictures: http://www.monitor.hr/clanci/dvojba-je-rijesena-sony-a77-opravdava-svaku-ulozenu-lipu/161139/
Just look at the article below this one. It seems some people are voting with their wallets for the NEX7. I don’t think there is any other Sony camera that can command 3x the list price.
The sensor in the C3 is the same as the one in the 5N?
so… all these people voting for the NEX7, I highly doubt they all own it or even have any experience with it. That’s like voting for the best restaurant in town but never eaten there
+1
You are taking this too seriously. And it is not the same as eating food. We have all the specs available, similar cameras to compare too, etc. Enough information to have a general idea.
There are plenty of reviews and sample photographs.
Using your analogy it’s like sampling the food from that restaurant without eating it there. Your view on that sample food would be just as valid as those who had been there to eat it.
Yes, I don’t think a vote like this is too serious. It is more of a ‘what would I like to be under the tree’ type poll.
Well, that’s just paper specs voting, but obviously, the NEX7 is the best camera 🙂
a77 hardcore
A77 pushes ALL my buttons – and some. I cannot believe how much I love EVF!
none of the above …
very disappointed in sony no tethered shooting in camera’s , no remote control like we had in a700 .
until that is fixed no reason to buy new camera from Sony
i would have voted for the A77 for being the more mature and well refined awesome camera.. its a pleasure to use!! but i have voted for the Nex 7 as in my eyes this is a revolutionary camera, it came to be by demand of pro users and i think you should support manufacturers that like to innovate!
the Nex 7 is a brilliant camera, even though its software side leaves a lot of question marks 😉 as one very good review said, it feels cobbled together..
I voted for the A77 because that is what I have. Alot of people got one this year. I just don’t know anyone other than some reviewers who have the nex 7.
I look at it like the a77 is out this year even if everyone hasn’t got it yet,but the nex 7 will not be out till next year.
sony will have the a99 out next year also should we vote that the best camera of 2011?
Been heavily using my a77 for about a month. I’m amazed at all the “goodies” that were never mentioned in the reviews. My results (raw) are impressive. I find myself using manual mode much more than before because you can fine tune you results with the preview. The auto modes also do a credible job and the DRO is terrific. I love this camera. I am able to get shots ow that we’re previously impossible or very difficult with an OVF. The OLED EVF is terrific.
Yeah I don’t see how the NEX 7 can be included in this pole as it’s circulation among the buying public is extremely limited to date. Remember the NEX 5N’s video clicking noise that cause a recall after it got into the hands of the customers? Who know’s what will be found when the NEX 7 gets into more customer hands. Rating a camera on just what a number of reviewers have stated leaves much to be desired and is really absurd IMO.
I am not saying the NEX 7 won’t be the greatest thing since peanut butter found jelly as it may very well be but as of right now at best the jury is still out as I see it for 2011 model year. Right now, all those votes for the NEX 7 are nothing more than hopes and prayers with too little of a sample size to really mean anything.
