The Fujifilm X-PRO2 will come in January… 2016 ;) ! (source right in the past)

_ _ _

According to a source, who was right in the past (thanks!), the Fujifilm X-PRO2 will come in January.

– – – End of the rumor – – –

There is the CES from the 6th to 9th of January. So maybe Fujifilm will show the X-PRO2 there. Or maybe there will be a separate announcement, like it was for the X-T1, which skipped the CES and was announced just a few weeks later at the end of January.

Anyway, we now have at least a first important hint, that the X-PRO2 will see the light exactly 4 years after the X-PRO1.

But this rumor makes me think… where is the Sony A7000 with its new APS-C sensor? SAR says it will come within a month. So. if the agreements between Sony and Fuji did not change, then Fuji has to wait about half a year before implementing the Sony A7000 sensor (with Fuji’s X-Trans CFA array) in the X-PRO2. In this case, the X-PRO2 could be announced in January, but not be available before mid March or mid April.

Or wait…. maybe… maybe the X-PRO2 will feature another sensor?

Take the usual grain of salt, but yes… it seems that we could pretty soon be relieved of a long wait and years of X-PRO2 rumor hunting could be over in Janaury… lucky me!

I admit I’m pretty exhausted… but with the power of the coffee I’ll keep it up with the rumor work until the end… burn out or not 😉 .

Every help I can get from you out there is highly appreciated. You can send me emails at fujirumor@gmail.com (also using a fake email) or 100% anonymously via rumor box (but please use a nick-name, so that I can eventually recognize you if you share rumors in future)

Now where did I put my coffee? I have to fire off some emails!

have a GREAT day,

  1. Given history and Fuji’s limited resources, I’d bet on them using the 24MP Sony sensor. However, the interesting part would be what they do with the viewfinder and the interface.

    1. I sincerely doubt it. If they were just going to stick with 24mp they could have already long-since released the X-Pro 2.

Their new flagship has to hit it out of the park to be relevant in this competitive market … and having one of the first 32mp APS-C cameras, combined with Fuji’s other unique attributes, would give them back some competitive advantages.

I also think a 32mp sensor makes a lot of sense: it gives the new camera more perceived shelf-life in this megapixel-obsessed market … and considering that Sony has managed a 42.5mp sensor with clean ISO12800 in the A7RII, I would expect a 32mp APS-C sensor with even cleaner ISO6400 to be completely doable, engineering-wise.

That assumes they use a Sony sensor at all, of course. For all we know, they may be announcing the organic sensor.

  2. new rumors put the A7000 at 32MP so I can’t imagine there’s be any reason for delay if they use 24MP. There again, maybe Toshiba will do the new sensor. Things are beginning to look interesting!

  3. If delays are due to Sony, then the agreement can be so that OEM customers will not have the 6 month intermediate ‘waiting’ time.

OEMs are harder hit as they are more dependent and there is much money involved in this industry. The longer the wait, the more chances are that camera manufacturers will leave Sony for other sensor manufacturers like Aptina, Toshiba or even Samsung.

I wouldn’t mind if they skip the optical viewfinder for a 4k viewfinder running at 200hz. The optical viewfinder is useless anyway with many of the current lenses being so large.

    1. You don’t need to use all the lenses in Fuji’s product line with a camera that follows a specific philosophy, that will be gone if you take the viewfinfer out of it.
For the purposes you are looking for it’s probably better to ask for other X sys camera model.

    2. Just because you don’t open a convertible during winter time, doesn’t mean you can’t have fun in the summer. Any lens between the 18mm and the 60mm makes perfect sense on the X-Pro1. For lenses beyond the ranges to the wider and more tele side, simply use the EVF. What’s the problem?

      1. I believe French Fries was talking about the blocking of the OVF due to the size of the lenses, not about the frame lines being insufficient. Your argument still applies but the problem affects two of the most popular lenses (23 and 56). Whether it blocks too much of the view to be usable is obviously subjective.

        1. Big lenses do indeed block a tiny fraction of the visual area of the OVF. But, again, even with the 23 and the 56 attached, it’s not a big deal. Let’s call this optical confirmation. 🙂 It’s a “oh, I see, the lens is still attached to the body” type of visual confirmation. I use them both with the OVF, not always everyday but if I like to do so. Especially if it’s too sunny and bright outside or if I like a more documentary style.
The only two lenses that I don’t use the OVF with are the 14mm and the 50-230mm.

  4. Latest rumoured specifications of the A7000.
That sounds good for the X-Pro 2 as well. 😉

    – 32mp BSI
    – 5-axis IBIS
    – Much better ISO
    – 4K
    – 285 PDAF points
    – New EVF (larger T* viewfinder 0.75x)
    – 14.5fps

    1. Where is A7000?
The last train Sony announced A7SII and Super35 camcorder!!!

      Now,A7000 rumors was discontinued.
That does mean no new sensor for X-Pro II ?

    2. If that’s true, then it won’t be the sensor for the Pro-2. Fuji Product Manager always spoke about “a bit more room for higher resolution”, but certainly not doubling the resolution compared to today.
That’s one good thing with Fuji: they usually resist the spec-geeks and focus purely on image quality and common sense. An APS-C 32Mpx sensor is certainly an overkill.

      1. Not overkill at all, not when you really analyze it. And frankly, you need to double the megapixels to really see a difference in files. All things being equal, I’ll happily take more sampling. And since Sony’s new FF 42.5mp sensor produces clean results at ISO 12,800, there’s no reason to think we’ll lose any existing ISO performance by doubling the megapixel count. In fact, we may still get a bit more headroom. 32mp in an APS-C camera ought to be quite doable with today’s bleeding-edge sensor tech.

Also, Samsung’s APS-C sensor is already at 28mp.

Finally, given Fuji’s four-year cycle refresh with this camera, they better NOT be starting behind the curve, or the XP-2 will be out of date the moment it hits the streets. This camera needs to hit it out of the park if Fuji really wants to become the number 3 camera manufacturer … as they have repeatedly stated.

  5. A credible New York Fuji rep told me to expect ‘good news’ about the X Pro2 in February 2016 about two weeks ago so a January announcement seems plausible.

  6. Is there any chance the X-T2 would come out at the same time? I see the Pro and T having slightly different markets and I would hold out for the X-T2.

      1. This would be great. I’m slowly buying then lenses I’ve always wanted for my x-t1 and I need to save some €€ for x-t2

  7. Maybe Fuji and Sony renegociated since it’s not Fuji’s fault that Sony delayed the launch of their camera so many times and Sony’s sensor division would end up losing a big client because of that.

  8. Sticking with the XT till I see the new version of the X100. I think a 2-3 year cycle on version upgrades is a good balance between consumer expectations and the economics of creating product. Four years has damaged Fuji’s rep IMHO. This camera has to be a home run to last another three plus years in the market. Kinda sad actually this this is the reality of consumer electronics,,,,,,

      1. It would be if they managed expectations better. Then you just have to look to this Blog to see that no matter what, users just keep asking for more for less money, and faster. It is systemic of the CE industry. You can’t go back… at least it is VERY hard to do so.

    1. Damaged Fujifilm’s rep, How?
In four years they released their BEST selling X camera to date and a Cheaper version in the XT10. Not to mention the X100S.
And they continue to release firmware updates. If anything, their Rep is larger now. Other camera makers are now trying to replicate what Fuji has done with supporting their cameras.

  9. I just hope that x-pro2 and successor of x100t will come out before June of 2016 , right on time for the summer and not during winter months of 2016.

  10. Hope X-Pro2 will have front and back comand dials like X-T1 has, but with a few more dirrect fn buttons, 2-3 Custom modes marked on shutter speed dial and big back AF-On (L) button. Do not know if the new 24-32MP sensor will reach 7-8 DR for RAW 6400iso, hope so with clean files too. And of course Bayer CFA please, no more X-Trans! 🙂 and new smaller 23/2 WR and 55/2WR in 2016.

  11. “Two X-PRO2 version, one 24MP APS-C and one 25-27 MP ASP-X, compatible with XF/XC lenses (OS)”

That ASP-X size sensor, what multiply factor will that be for FF equivalent lenses?

  12. why not use 24MP from existing for a while A6000??? Fuji could have done it a year ago. That’s a very good sensor. Make it into Xtrans and go. Fuji needs to have something unique for competitive edge. Last time it was the largest EVF (which now is beaten by A7RII). I hope they include IBIS, more PDAF points, and come up with something else interesting that would set them apart from competition. Something like 1/500 Flash Xsync would be nice. Even larger viewfinder (here I am talking about XT2 of course).. Faster continuous Af rates. You need to have somethng unique for marketing perspective, and I am sure sure Fuji will deliver something there. Not sure what though

  13. After Sony released A7SII,no more sound of A6XXX,A7000.
Maybe sony announce new APS-C machine on 2016.

And X-Pro2 wait for long time? dam!

  14. I just hope they aren’t jumping ship with Sony out of impatience. I have yet to see a sensor that is better than Sony’s.

  15. Very interesting ….. I’m looking forward to seeing the next evolution in the X-Pro series . Im not looking forward to the headache i will get from rolling my eyes at the people who are going to complain no matter what the specs are because its not the perfect camera for every photographer , and want a X-Pro3 in the next 6 months or they are jumping ship.

  16. Couldn’t someone ‘hand-hold’ mount some Fuji lenses on a Sony A7, just to see if the lenses will roughly cover a larger sensor? If there’s massive vignetting at 1.3x crop, then we should know that this is a non-starter.

  17. “So. if the agreements between Sony and Fuji did not change, then Fuji has to wait about half a year…”

Once again: where is the proof that there was ever such an agreement? Near as I can determine, without proof it’s just a tired internet meme.

    1. You only have my word on this… a word you can decide to trust or not. I can not say more than this, sorry.

And of course I could be wrong. As always. But that’s what I have heard

      1. Right. So no actual evidence. In truth, Sony Semiconductor and Sony Imaging are entirely different entities with their own financial mandates. For the former to hold back new tech from other legitimate buyers would only serve to weaken their economic position while they try to quickly recoup their R&D investment.

That’s simple Business 101. What I’m saying is that Sony Semiconductor is not in business to satisfy Sony Imaging, it has to show it’s own profit and will doubtless sell to any customers in need of its latest products.

        1. I fully agree.

There may be some clausules, but you are fully right that Sony Semiconductor and Sony Digital Imaging are two entirely different entities.

Sony Semiconductor is a OEM manufacturer, while Sony Digital Imaging is part of Sony’s consumer product line.

They have nothing in common except for being part of the same holding.

In this case Sony Digital Imaging can not decide that Sony Semiconductors is not allowed to sell on their OEM products. Not only will it harm the financial results of Sony Semiconductors, it might also loose OEM clients due to these kind of agreements.

No need to say that Sony is still in need for hard cash as their shares are still rated ‘Junk’ on Wall Street. To recover from Sony’s economic downturn it would be foolish of Sony Components to put such embargo’s upon their product in favour for one of their other groups. Especially in a competitive market that is under pressure from R&D efforts of other companies as well.

Its not that Sony Digital Imaging is GOD.

All this chitchat about ‘not being allowed to sell to 3rd parties’ is all based upon rumours, Unless someone can show us the contract.

          1. the real interesting point for me is not if a 6 months embargo exists or not. It exists.

But a FR-reader, who’s a lawyer, wrote me an interesting mail. Here it is: “Fuji and Sony probably negotiated a “What if” clause, covering some of
the contingencies if Sony failed to deliver on time. I have to believe
that the Fuji lawyers were sharp enough to demand that everything
wouldn’t be business as usual if Sony breached.”

This would cover Fuji in case of unexpected delays,… like the one of the A7000

          1. It’s not about “trust”. It’s about “facts”. And in this case, as French Fries more fully explains below, the facts on the ground don’t jive with this particular rumor (that is being repeatedly propagated as “fact”).

          2. fact? rumor? The line that separates them can be very thin. Here an example:

Do you remember when the first image of the X-T1 leaked, and we all saw two SD-Card slots there? We were all super happy.

But then the Japanese source wrote me and said: “no dual SD-card slot”. I said: “but we all can see it in the picutres!”. The source said: “trust me, no dual SD-card slot”.

            You get it?

I had NO evidence that it will have just one SD-card slot, just a person somewhere in Japan, whom I’ve never met in person, that told me that… and I decided to trust that person.

Now imagine the same source (or another trusted one) tells me about the 6 months embargo for Sony sensors. What shall I do? Say “pf, go home dude… you have to bring me facts or you’re out. I want to see the contract!”… or I can, once again, decide to trust.

You’ll never get facts here. Not even when I share leaked images of products, like the X-T10. This won’t be a fact either. Everything will remain a rumor until it’s somewhere out offcially.

But, if you want, you can trust me, and believe in the fact that I try to do my job at my best, I don’t wan’t to fool anyone, I’m not perfect, I make errors, but I’m mostly right with what I share.

btw, I remember asking Andrea of SAR, if that 6 months Sony embargo is correct. He asked his own sources, and confirmed it. Any yet, this is still just a rumor.

    1. Nope, but delayed due to heat problems.

I don’t think you want a camera that shows hot pixels after just a few shots.

    2. Yup…an X-Pro1S would have been easy for them to do and would have made most people happy….not to mention they already set a precedent for a refresh with the X100S.

  18. Now that we’re ’rounding the corner to the 4 year mark I return to banging my head against the wall wondering why Fuji never created a X-Pro1s. Most of us just wanted a more responsive body as a stop-gap solution while they developed the X-Pro2. I guess I should really just start wearing a helmet.

  19. It’s about expectations. You made my point… They went to fast and now they can’t keep up with the bar they set. Keep in mind, Support is now “expected” and there are some Fuji owners that were upset that their cameras did not get the same features as others. This is what I am getting at….. expectations will pigeonhole a company and can lead to a bad reputation if they do not followup as they did in the past. Fuji’s great but this was a misstep

  20. We can only hope that there will be a major differentiator in this product. I mean, something that puts the higher end Fujifilm X-series back on the map versus the harsh (Sony) competition and provides really added value versus the X-trans we see now (for me that’s not only a resolution story, but a few stops more sensitive sensor with a far better ISO-behavior will help). I think that’s about it. Some X-Pro1 addicts will claim the hybrid OVF/EVF is a feature like that but I have even trying hard but got never very impressed by it (neither did I ever by Leica’s RF viewfinder which is also ‘very accurate’ until you see the result). I found it a serious problem that the OVF was not reflecting true optical info like a DSLR’s viewfinder – it’s just a very inaccurate simulation of the framing (with some lenses even terrible at a closer focus) and not showing any info about true focus and sharpness, DOF,… The EVF was rather poor in low light, not something that allowed a very decent manual operation under darker circumstances. I changed over to the X-T1 and I haven’t missed the X-Pro1’s OVF a minute since then. Certainly not its AF ;-). One thing is sure – if the market perceives that this ‘next gen’ X-Pro2 and its long rumored sensor update is not really ticking all the boxes and the RAW conversion is lingering in the same way as it did for the X-Pro1, I’m afraid that the X-series will face the same fate as the glorious TX1, TX2, S PRO and GX-ranges. The Fuji X-T10 may be cheap, an X-Pro2 will easily be at a price level there is a lot of – better? – choice to be made in the current CSC/DSLR-landscape.

  21. I do hope they put a better sensor in it. I tried to take a few landscape shoots earlier this week. I noticed it’s difficult to push X-T1’s raw over 1eV, while I can safely push 2ev with file from D810. I do stacking so this is quite important to me. Fuji’s raw is much easier to become foggy. Maybe I should try something different.

      1. That’s why I switched from X-Pro to Nikon D600; more detail in the shadows. (Most of my work is industrial landscape photography at night)

  22. been ready to sell my 5d and go for the x-pro2 for a year now! hoping and praying they put some good video that can compete with sony mirrorless. really eyeballing that new sony a7sii but its lack of phase AF is a huge deal breaker for using it as a stills camera. PLEASE FUJI, hurry! and put good video!!

  23. i hv gone to Canon for full frame last week since my wait for a Fuji full frame never come after such a long wait. I still kept my xe1. However, a bit disappointed no classic chrome and 14bit raw update firmware. Still hoping someday Fuji will launch a full frame camera, something like Leica Q, however, with a 35mm 1.8 lens, though.

  24. as a former Fuji xt1 photographer who switched to Sony a7m2/a7r2 and still like fuji I am afraid that with the rumored specs fuji can’t compete with sony ff. for me there are missing some killer features. my wishes to fuji santa claus: image stabilizer with high res mode better than olympus e5m2 to overcome bayer artefacts (40 mpix would be enough); instead of an organic sensor foveon style with sufficient high iso quality, viewfinder and monitor with at least adobe rgb, better pro photo color space and ultrafast refresh rate; 14 bit or even 16 bit colors for best transitions; fuji reala film mode with perfect filmlike rendering; jpgs in pro photo color space; foolproof wifi and gps integration; an awb working perfectly in all situations – have you ever tried to use awb in deep forest, no matter which camera.
What I (but probably many others do) don’t need: video, program automatic, hybrid view finder, a menue system where I need a manual to manage everything – I never missed anything in my Sigma Merrills and there is not much to change :); many pics per second, I am no sports shooter.
Minimum requirement I am not sure fuji will implement: tilt screen!, gps, 2 sd slots, image stabilizer, electronic shutter with full 14 bit; a battery lasting at least 2 or 3 times longer than now.
Final statement: a perfect sensor with fully usable high res mode to match resolution at least of my Merrills and my sony a7r2 would tempt me to return to fuji which I always have appreciated as a company for photographers. For me there is probably no economic way for fuji to switch to FF thus they must do everything to close the gap to sony. with current bayer design 24 mpix is probably the highest pixel amount making sense in apsc. I can assure you that my a7r2 is definitively not as good as my a7m2 in terms of pixel quality – neither color nor sharpness- also if many reviews will tell you a different story.
anyway I wish fuji success with the camera business because we need such companies for photographers.
