[UDPATE] MJr carefully read the official FujiUSA page about the X-M1 and noted this: ” ISO100 – 25600 Sensitivity setting range Select from the broad sensitivity range of ISO100 – 25600 for shooting at a full 16-megapixel resolution. The FUJIFILM X-M1 also lets you set the AUTO ISO range (up to ISO 400 – 6400) and the shutter speed limit. For quick access to ISO settings, you can assign this function to the Fn or Q Button.” Is that what we all waited for? Read it here.

dpreview conclusions: “it looks very much as though it might be one of the most usable, photographer-friendly small mirrorless cameras on the market. Other companies have generally made their small models as externally-simple as possible, for fear of driving away beginners, but Fujifilm has instead gone ahead and covered the X-M1 with more controls than you’ll find on some entry-level SLRs. We’re not sure if it’s the smallest twin-dial interchangeable lens camera ever made, but it has to be close. […] Overall, then, the X-M1 combines a compact form factor with proper twin-dial controls, Fujifilm’s lovely JPEG colour rendition, and a full range of exposure modes which means it can be used by a novice while still offering enough manual control to keep enthusiasts happy. The new XC 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 kit zoom offers a usefully wider-angle view than typical 18-55mm kit zooms, and impressively fast focusing. This makes for a pretty mouth-watering package that looks very close to the [shoplink 13800 ebay]Olympus PEN E-P5[/shoplink] at a distinctly lower price point”

FIRMWARE press release
FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Shigehiro Nakajima) today announces the release of two new firmware updates for the FUJIFILM X-Pro1 and X-E1 compact system cameras, one on 25thJune and a further one on 23rd July.
25th June firmware update:
FUJIFILM X-Pro1 Ver.2.05, FUJIFILM X-E1 Ver.1.06
1. Additional functionality to improve “one-handed” camera operation
A ‘Focus Frame Selection’ option has been added to the ‘Fn’ (function) button.
This offers easier/quicker operation when setting the Focus Frame Selection using only your right hand.
A second ‘Fn’ button can be allocated.
This enables you to allocate a function to the selector “down” button. The default setting is ‘Focus Frame Selection’ but this can be changed to whatever suits your shooting style.
2. Enable aperture control for lenses without aperture rings (XF27mmF2.8 / XC16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OIS)
If you are using either of these lenses which do not feature aperture ring, this firmware update allows you to adjust the aperture setting by using the command dial.
23rd July firmware update:
FUJIFILM X-Pro1 Ver.3.00, FUJIFILM X-E1 Ver.2.00
1. Improvement of AF speed. Improves AF speed on all existing XF lenses, thanks to the updated algorithm throughout the full range of focal length. Lenses covered:
XF14mm F2.8 R
XF18mmF2 R
XF35mmF1.4 R
XF60mmF2.4 R Macro
XF18-55mmF2.8-4 R LM OIS
NOTES:
The AF Speed on the XF55-200mmF3.5-4.8 R MS OIS lens has been already optimised.
For all lenses other than the XF55-200mmF3.5-4.8 R MS OIS, the firmware for each lens must be also updated.
2. ‘Focus Peak Highlight’ function for manual focusing
A ‘Focus Peak Highlight’ function, which features on the X100S and X20 cameras, can be added via this firmware update. It assists accurate and sensitive manual focusing by enhancing the outline of your subject in high contrast.
3. Improvement in ‘Checking Focus’ operation: how to change magnification ratio in manual focusing
The process to check focus by selecting manual focus magnification has improved. Just press and rotate the dial right or left and the camera will alternate magnification between 3x and then 10x , whichever way you continue to turn it.

Although I don’t feel the need for much better AF (I haven’t had any trouble focusing with my X-Pro 1), the firmware upgrade for focus peaking is going to be fantastic…And, if the AF is improved, that will be a bonus.
The only other thing I want is minimum shutter speed settings in auto ISO…Hopefully that comes too!
AF-selection on the right makes the Tilf-shift adapter way more useable. And focus peaking will make it even better! Hooray!
Historygram that works in M would be great
According to @fujiguys AF selection from X100S is coming to X-Pro1/X-E1, 2nd Fn button too
I like that they implemented my suggestion of using the arrow-down button as a second Fn button (with an AF field selection option).
I hope to have a hands-on of the camera and the new lenses ready by Friday. I also recommend Andy’s very good preview on DPR (linked in Patrick’s article). It’s good start.
Rico, I read Andy’s preview. He says AF is really good on XM1 with 16-50. He does not elaborate on how good. Olympus OM-D lightning-fast-in-low-light good? or just good in comparison with what we are used with the Fuji X cameras without Phase AF on sensor?
I own XE1. am I correct in assuming that my XE1 AF will be on July 25 as fast as it is Today on XM1? Or better than XM1?
I’m just waiting for 2 simple feats for the X-cameras.
– Full manual control in video mode
– 1080p24
They even added the Wifi, c’mon Fuji, it’s not that hard! hehe…
If you’re into video, you’ll probably also want the focus peaking to work with video. I think the firmware updates only allows it to be used in stills and not in video.
Thanks! Hopefully more colors and settings for focus peaking too.
That’s actually a fanstastic idea. I wouldn’t absolutely mind having more customizable buttons. There are other dedicated buttons I hardly ever use: metering mode and macro mode. Making all of them customizable can make it just perfect. But two are certainly sufficient.
Does the 27mm pancake lens come with a lens cap, and a lens hood?
Cap, yes. Hood, no.
It’s a bit disappointing not to see a hood for such a relatively high price. But on the other hand vented 39mm thread hoods are dime a dozen on ebay.
I love the fact that they are spreading the X-Trans love to the general public (or at least trying to). Keeping with the X-Trans 1 chip just solidifies the idea that the next camera will be much better in low light / overall IQ. Dare I say V.3 processor with the V.2 X-Trans? Its amazing working in the industry and getting to see these cameras come to fruition. Coming from a 5D II when I switched at the X-Pro 1’s launch I can say I’ve never felt so comfortable with a manufacturer’s commitment to photography and by extension the Photographers. Pro 1 still gets FW updates that bring better useability, while new cameras push the basics of photography to the masses. What more can we really ask for (yes having the min shutter speed setting in ISO would be the icing on the cake for many).
read in imaging-resource preview:
“Worryingly, we’re led to believe that the Fuji X-M1’s autofocus system will not be as fast as that in the X-E1. Hopefully that will turn out not to be the case.”
http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/fuji-x-m1/fuji-x-m1A.HTM
I trust imaging-resource and they would not have said if there was no reason to. What is going on with AF? less powerful processor?
The AF won’t be as good as the x100s – there are no phase detect pixels on the sensor.
Which is why there is a lack of the split image manual focusing in the features – it is sensor dependent.
I wouldn’t be worried… I for one would rather them make a camera for the consumer market that is a little crutch when compared to existing (pro) cameras. If they made it better than the X-E1 and Pro 1 then everyone would be up in arms due to price, besides, this isn’t and E1 or Pro1 replacement. This is meant for the consumer market to sell numbers. More sales of this camera will equal more profit for Fujifilm which in turn will equal more money for them to invest in the system. Its smart marketing. They’ve proven that they listen to real issues with the cameras via firmware anyway.
Anyone else remember some clown commenting up a storm about how it’s impossible for the Xpro1 & XE1 to have focus peaking? I love when the know-it-all peanut gallery is proved wrong. Yahtzee!
The interesting thing here is how the X-M1 actually uses the EXR II Processor from the X100s while us ol’ interchangable folk are running the first gen processor. It must have taken some effort to get it running well on the old hardware. And its still not up to the task of peaking during video so there is some ways to go yet.
Looks like the official page is up too: http://www.fujifilmusa.com/products/digital_cameras/x/fujifilm_x_m1/
This is great. I could care less about the xm camera but the fn button and even more interesting to me is the focus peaking. I’m now much much more likely to use my legacy lenses and now I can begin to pick up even more older lenses to play with(i have a fondness for the feel of older lenses when putzing around on my own). Kudos Fuji nice move
Omg, no panorama ?
I’ll just be glad to be able to leave my left hand out of AF point selection on my X Pro 1… 😉 More speed is always welcome though…
It’s everything I’d hoped for! 🙂 Ok, so I wish I could hit OK/Menu to get out of the AF point selection menu, but… Half pressing the shutter button is good too! =D
There is a chance that I’ll buy the double kit lens while I wait for the X-E2 and then I sell the X-M1+16-50mm kit, I keep the 27mm and buy the X-E2. I’ve been waiting for the X-E2 to jump into the Fuji X-system and this might make it sooner.
Please add minimum shutter speed on auto iso.
mvalma was right!
Focus peak coming!!!
Yeah!
Give me facedetect AF at least on the X100S or give me death!
I know I’m getting greedy, but please make red and yellow available to focus peaking!!! Having only white colour is not usable in certain situations.
Other than that, HUGE THANK YOU to Fuji for listening to our complains/suggestions. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!
I may sound like a fanboy but this is just awesome! I didn’t expect focus peaking. I didn’t expect focus frame selection using the down button. This is just great.
Focus peaking is great news! Thanks Fuji, now please just copy and paste those lines of code for the minimun shutter speed using Auto ISO.
So FW update tonight, holiday tomorrow – good timing Fuji, thank you. This AF selection is huge improvement – that was one of the things which I wished would see on X-Pro1. And a month later we will get focus peaking – what else do I need? NOTHING (I don’t care about minimum shutter speed for ISO auto, I shoot in manual 95% of the time).
Please add exposure simulation!!
No minimum shutter speed on auto iso, what a shame 🙁
Peaking is nice. But the auto iso fix & the exposure compensation dial working in manual mode is more important, sadly no news on that front.
I’d like an option to shoot tif files.
Pretty sick! I’m really thinking about buying this camera. But I wonder, what’s the exact difference between the X-E1?
me too. cos i hardly use the electronic viewfinder on XE! as it drains out battery very fast. i like the xm1 more in the sense it has a tilting screen which suits my style of shooting and cheaper.
furthermore XM1 processor is faster!!!
No viewfinder! Bad trend!
It’s not a trend. It’s called product segmentation focused on different user bases.
You can still buy a X-E1 or X-Pro 1 …
I would really love the spot metering wrapped to the focus point…..wherever i wish to place my focus point….. i would love this feature, and really miss it from dslr days….
Is there an option for full MANUAL video??????? (iso, shutter, ap.)
What a shame!
I have waited for the minimum shutter speed since I own the X-Pro 1.
And it didn’t make it to the newest firmware, although there is already an implementd solution on the companying products around the X-Trans sensor.
I’m frustrated about that news.
The new fn button’s option to be used as a focus point select makes the xpro1 soooo much more usable! Thank you!
Now only one more thing. A lot of pro’s (photojournalists in particular like me) like to keep the autofocus and shutter release separated. Many pro DSLR’s have an AF-on button. But since the Xpro1 doesn’t have an AF-on button, Fuji could create a menu option to allow the AE-L/AF-L button to activate autofocus.
Please add AF-on functionality Fuji.
Yes, back button autofocus would be great.
If you set the focus selector to manual, the AE-L/AF-L works like a AF-ON button. ‘One-touch AF’ in Fuji speak.
Yeah, like ph said. Just switch it to manual focus and you can still use the AE-L/AF/L button to set your focus automatically 🙂
DAYUM. I want that wifi button on my X-E1!! So many times I have wished for something like that…
I just updated the firmware for my X-E1 and I think it’s awesome! Using the bottom arrow as AF point selector is very intuitive and solves one of the major ergonomic quirk for me 🙂 Now, no need to detach my eye from the viewfinder when selecting my focus point, very cool!
With all these announcements, and as a beginner photographer, I am very confident that I made the right choice buying into the Fuji X system!
Is anyone else having problems updating X-E1 to firmware v1.06? I am updating from v1.04 and I have downloaded the file twice and it just says no firmware found on camera. I’m using a MacBook Air and the same card I have used for previous updates.
The update of the firmware 1.06 worked fine for me. Did you format your SD card before copying the firmware file on it?
Yep formatted card using camera. Used different cards 🙂
I have the same problem. In fact the file doesn’t download completely. If you check the file size and it’s smaller than what they say on Fuji’s website then it won’t update because something is obviously missing. I tried 3x now and it doesn’t work.
Mine is larger at 38.3Mb. Just gonna try a third download now.
Make sure that the file isn’t being renamed when you download it to your card. If you had previously downloaded a file then your computer OS might try appending a number to the end.

Yep, that was the problem lol. It had changed the name. 🙂
Hi.
It worked for me, but I was updating from 1.05. I updated from a macbook pro.
I have an issue though. After the firwmare update, I noticed some noise from my 18-55 zoom lens (1.01 firmware). The noise is slightly reduced (not eliminated) when the OIS is turned off but does not go completely away. I am not 100% sure, but I believe this noise was not here before the update. It’s loud enough that I think I would have noticed. It’s a bit annoying! My 35mm lens seems to work okay.
Woot! Now add minimum Auto-ISO shutter speed and these cameras are perfect! Thanks Fuji, you’re making me feel like I’m doing the right thing dumping my Sony NEX gear.
Oh, and release that 23mm f/1.4 ASAP please 🙂
I hope the min. shutter speed can still be set to Auto besides manual settings.
If not, it means they managed to screw up the whole Auto ISO feature…
X-E1 is up to date and I love af-selection now. I’m pretty sure that with the coming firmware update in July we will all get min. shutter speed selection for Auto ISO as well. 🙂
noted the latest firmware update allows “down selector” to be programmed many optional functions. Fuji, please allow the “left selector and “right selector” be programmed as well (i.e. for white balance, etc) for XE1 and XPro1 cameras. Please do it since both of the selectors cannot be assigned any functions at this moment and that would mean they are under utilized. Whereas, in the latest X-M1, those buttons are fully utilized and can be handled by the right hand alone. Furthermore, on manual mode, think the ergonomics on X-M1 is more feasible to control the shutter and aperture On XE1 manual mode, reach for the control on shutter dial is tough ergonomically without taking eyes off the camera. Think XM1 is a better choice ergonomically. Hope you guys are listening, Fuji. And thx for the continuous updates. Finally, the “focus frame selection” problem is solved now.
I’ve never tried peaking, but that’s awesome news! I’d really be trilled with split focusing, though, since it’s the way I focus with my analog rangefinder. Guess you can’t have it all. But Caderyn said up there it’s a sensor’s limitation, so that’s never coming to the X-E1.
