Wow. Where the heck did this come from? Gotta see some sample photos for this.
It seems like these random companies are making E-mount lenses but nothing from Tamron, Tokina or Sigma?
I wonder who buys this when f/0.95 is 1/3 of the price.
You get what you pay for.
Except judging from early samples, you don’t. It’s extremely mediocre (and that’s being generous) wide open and doesn’t seem to sharpen up until f/2.8. My Canon FL 55/1.2 with speed booster is sharper and essentially the same (it’s a 39mm f/0.9 when combined). That combo is also less than 1/3 of the cost of the Ibelux
Due to angles of the light falling on the sensor from 0.85 and 0.95 lenses, I doubt you will see any meaningful difference in light (and ISO at the same brightness).
And if you need DoF THAT shallow (why?), it is cheaper to buy A7 and any old 85/1.8.
This is too fast, I won’t be able to catch up with it, way too fast

“This is definitely a must have for any mirrorless shooter, especially if
most of your work is in low light environments like weddings.”
Seems overpriced for an APS-C lens. After all, converted it’s just a 60mm f/1.3.

Sony is profiting from Zionist bankers! Why would you support the genocide of the local people that have been living there for thousands of years?
Anybody who is helping Israel kill terrorist scum is good in my book.
So the killing of 6 million plus local people is an act of heroism?
It works like this… Hamas was/is a terrorist group. The majority of the people in Gaza had the ability to freely elect whoever they wanted… they elected Hamas to lead them… Well if you get in the car with a known murdering psychopath don’t expect me to give a damn when you get killed along with the driver when the police shoot the car to pieces.
I have no sympathy for anyone in Gaza, they picked their poison and now they are suffering from that decision.
And Volkswagen was Hitlers car company… blah blah blah… I can find bad in anything if I want to…. Apple is driving poor folks in China to suicide while using water to keep their corporate office green while farmers lose their crops… Got any other darlings you want trashed?
Sony manufactured the camera, not the rocket itself. Why don’t you just boycott your computer forever so we don’t need to read your crap.
I’m no genius but seems to me a company would have been better served making a two thousand dollar lens for the A7 Full Frame triplets instead of APSC.
I guess they started developing this lens before even knowing FF-mirrorless would come. Now they probably develop a FF lens, but it all takes a while… From starting a lens project until going on sales it usually takes more than a year.
Sony had plans to make FF from the day Nex designs were finalised and after the first two bodies were released it was no secret that FF was going to happen in E mount. Before the A7/A7r, they had the VG900 too. No excuse for anyone to assume that FF wasn’t going to happen on mirrorless. The real reason is probably market size. They can make this for FF mirrorless very easily as a 60/0.85…
“SLR Magic 35mm f/1.7 Lens for Sony E-Mount” is $149. Cheap no? Not sure about the IQ though.
Is that one of those converted security camera lenses?
Oh yeah, just researched that. It’s much cheaper if you get it the original lens with an e-mount adapter, around 30$ on ebay
At some point, the compactness of the system is lost.
This is a lens for pros/enthusiasts, not garden-variety Soccer Moms. Why would a serious shooter buy this instead of a dedicated FF body and a 50/1.4?
Because he doesn’t want to carry a dedicated FF body alongside his MFT body wherever he needs such a lens, would be a valid reason.
Just because there ARE lenses which are as large or even larger than their FF counterparts that does NOT mean the compactness of the SYSTEM is lost. The system still HAS the small lenses. They don’t go away just because there ALSO are bigger lenses.
When people say formats like MFT are compact when compared to FF, they don’t do an apples to apples comparison. The truly equivalent lenses of MFT on FF are so slow that FF doesn’t have such slow lenses. So most of the time MFT lenses are compared to FF lenses that are more capable (in terms of total light gathering). And if directly equivalent lenses are made for FF, most of the time they’d be not only the same size or smaller but lighter, cheaper and quality-wise better too. This lens is just one of many examples.
Yes, but having those slow lenses which FF does not have actually is an advantage for MFT, beside the existing disadvantages. After all, it is no hallucination that a typical collection of MFT gear is, while overall less capable in terms of light-gathering, significantly more compact than a collection of FF gear for the same purposes can ever get. The point is, for many applications, nowadays the MFT system simply is already capable enough.
That is true… but we won’t hear the end of it if equivalent/slow lenses are made for FF. For example take the crappy E 24/1.8 that many people here soil themselves over… when Sony made the FE 35/2.8 which is better in every sense, people shake their heads and whine.
This lens should have been A-Mount too, same as the Mitakon.
Why on Earth are they designing these thing for E-Mount?
Because for A-Mount they would need to be even larger and heavier. Much larger and much heavier. And even more expensive, too, of course.
It is hard enough getting a good focus with a 1.2 lens…. maybe I should just remove the lens on my camera altogether, shoot random things and then just say, “ahhh… don’t you just love the bokkeh.”
It doesn’t work like that. If you can’t afford this lens or can’t have it, there’s no need to bad mouth it.
As I’ve said before, this doesn’t make sense on the E mount because Sony has FF bodies but for others (e.g. Fuji) it sort of makes sense.
If I couldn’t afford the lens and wanted it I would just go buy a couple a hundred dollar security camera lens off ebay and then get an adapter and I would have the same thing for a fraction of the price. Having finally actually found some sample images from the lens I’m convince that my method of a security camera lens and adapter would not only equal the quality of this lens but probably exceed it.
This is to me little more than an elaborate scheme to fleece idiots from their money.

That’s if you know what’s best for everyone.

Only $2080 USDs for a new APS-C e-mount lens? Given my current e-mount lens choices, i’ll take it. At least its F-A-S-T!
