    1. Either that, or they sold their entire first production run and some part is being swapped out, necessitating the model number change. Maybe it comes with the new SEL1850 no OSS as the kit lens now, like they did with the a3500 model in Australia. Argh lol

      1. Good bet!
Or maybe they make a Nex-5t successor out of this and will be confused again with 5000 vs. 5100 :S

  1. Dump this model and bring a successor to NEX-7 instead.
Sony will do better focusing on upscale models rather than join the race to the bottom.

  2. As a camera sales man (in Norway): We are just getting rid of the nex-5t. The a5000 haven’t had the chance to start selling good. Hopefully the a5100 will take a long time to get into the stores…

      1. I was waiting for that remark. It dosen’t really matter. 5t was anout the same price, and we haven’t gotten rid of the 3n yet either. My comment is still valid.

  3. Sony just confused everyone with their marketing name and model changes and is paying the price, some new models are not that much better than old models with 5 in the name! But they have more zeros so that must be good!

  4. Bring that 20 mpix sensor with updated pdaf in a NEX-7 body, that would be a progress, and, no need to create a new body for it.

  5. I think that Sony has so many cameras now that they can’t keep track of them. Please stop the Sony engineers from releasing countless “new” cameras !

    1. Why? Upgrading to newer technology can’t be bad. I doubt that the A5100 is more than just replacing/upgrading some modules.

      1. For the same reason Apple releases new products once per year: give customers the feeling that their purchase is worth the investment and will be current for more than 3 months.

      2. because there are still several great lenses missing in their lineup. If they put as much effort in releasing lenses as cameras I would love to buy an upgrade once in a while.

  6. Well, if same autofocus as from A6000, plus touchscreen, I am going to buy it as the replacement (upgrade) of my nex-5n

    1. +1. Being able to control focus with my finger is just so convenient. And the NEX-5Ns auto focus have problems keeping up with my kids.

    2. YES, and keep the nex5 compacness.
And also, with a smartphone class tiltable 3:2 3.5″ touch screen and UI, highly responsive multitouch support, glove support, whitemagic (mandatory for a screen only device).
And put an aperture ring around the lens mount, while keeping the two other dials

    3. Please remember, that the A5000 was the successor of the NEX-3N series, and NOT the NEX-5*** series. So it might not be the right camera for you, provided that A5100 is not re-adding the Features that are missing from the 3N/A5000 (hotshoe for viewfinder, flashes, mic, etc. plus touch screen) or you actually do not need these specific features.

    1. Brahahahahaha… funny you say that. So did I!

Something tells me I’ll be forgetting the a5100 just as fast. ;^)

    1. Yes this is an interesting one, what are they going to do, if anything, about a A5x series replacement. Is it possible that the answer is “nothing” and the A7x series is the only APS-C model A-mount?

      1. Doubt it – Sony knows they need a gateway drug. I don’t know what the numbers are but anecdotally most people seem to buy a low end dslr first, before moving onto the harder stuff.

          1. We are talking about new users, they generally will not have a clue what E and A-mount is, nor will they care. They will see the A3500 as a dSLR like the professionals use and buy it.

          2. Probably not. That’s the point Andrew Richardson above was making. Sony needs an entrance model for A-Mount line, and that’s not A3500.

          3. Actually, it does seem like Sony treats the A3000/3500 as the successor to the A37. The whole reason for abandoning the NEX name was to emphasise the interchangeability between the two mounts. Sony stated that they see it as one unified system, since E-mount cameras can use A-mount lenses with adapter. In that sense, the A3000 really is an entry point into the A-mount line. Of course, by upgrading to an A-mount body, your E-mount lenses become unusable, but I don’t think Sony cares.

Sony might also be reasoning, that since the majority of people who buy entry-level models never upgrade, it doesn’t matter what mount the camera has.

          4. This may be the case, but this seems really stupid. As you pointed out, the systems aren’t really interchangeable. Transferring from A3500 to, say, A77 is little different than transferring to Nikon. You buy a new body, you buy all new lenses (a beginner won’t probably own any A-Mount lenses, since they require an adapter).

Besides, the question was about a58/a65, not a37. a3x line is discontinued (probably indeed replaced with a3500), same for a6x, but a58 can be updated.

  7. As a long time NEX user and advocate, who also had but didn’t keep both A7 and A6000, I’ve settled into the idea of using my NEX7 until it dies. It’s just still the best E mount body FOR ME (no need for flames if you feel otherwise) and with the SEL35 and SEL16-70 it makes a decently versatile “system” for traveling. For portrait I use it with a bunch of seriously good manual focus lenses, and it’s my main portrait camera. For action I just caved in after two years of trying to find workarounds, and just bought another Nikon system. Sony has sort of lost an opportunity to deliver on the promise of the NEX7, which was a camera that could have been followed, improved upon, and given proper LENSES to become a real DLSR alternative. So far, they missed.

    1. same here, but all my e-mount primes are collecting dust and i’m using my NEX-7 with canon FD 35-70 3.5-4.5 all the time 🙂

thinking to upgrade to FD 35-105 3.5-4.5 🙂 while i’m waiting for a new camera. the “new” 40-50 cameras from NEX-7 till now are not worth it (to me).

    2. What was wrong with A6000? It’s a better camera than the NEX-7 in almost every respect. It also shows much greater potential as a DSLR replacement than the NEX-7.

      1. You are right, there is nothing wrong with the A6000 and is it better than the NEX-7 in many ways except…..many of us like the Tri-Nav dials, especially those who shoot in M mode.

In fact, it was the best thing about this camera and very unique among all cameras. Of all the things that would survive nex-7 update I was sure that the Tri-Nav would be one of them.

        1. Many of us ….. shoot in M mode. I m not sure they are many to shoot in M mode unless to be very experimented photographer ;)…. many of amateur photographers adviced me to avoid M Mode ( and choose one of the priority mode and add some corrections of ur own) unless u have total control of ur shooting session parametres like studio.

But maybe u are one of these professionnal?

        2. except for M Mode, Tri Navi is useless contrary to Mode dial…

Indeed in priority mode, the both tri navi dials would control the same parametre unless u can assign IL on one dial. Can you use the both dials when moving the focus area? Btw it s a little loss coz changing mode quickly is more important

          1. what surely miss me the most is leveling gauge which is more efficient than align manually the horizon

    1. Yes, of course, that α5100 will have 4K RAW via Wi-Fi to your Sony Bravia TV or to your SmartPhone, from where the PlayMemories.app can broadcast this live to the net!!!

  8. What no one seems to understand is that a5000 is the succesor of NEX- 3N and not of the NEX-5 line. The NEX-5T was not yet replaced and it does not have a succesor in the making..yet the existing line now is : a5000(replaced NEX-3N), NEX-5T (not yet replaced), a6000 (replaced NEX-6), no replacement for NEX-7, a7,a7R.

    1. Well, it’s simply a little different but clearer model range now: α3000 for those stuck with the DSLR form factor, α5000 as the NEX-3 successor and α7000 as NEX-5, 6 & 7 sucessor, since nevertheless they’re still selling the NEX-5T the NEX-5R and NEX-6 have been techically identical cameras only in different bodies. Interesting variation I’m still hoping for is this α5 here: http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/the-super-compact-e-mount-full-frame-camera-patent

    2. Wow… are people still comparing the new line-up to the old? Why do you assume there will be direct replacements? Is it written in stone somewhere?

The A5000 occupies the NEX 3 and 5 slot… get over it.
The A6000 occupies the NEX 6 slot
The A7/r/s occupy the NEX 7 slot

I don’t use the word ‘replace’, because this seems to confuse people.

      1. Isn’t the single digit the FF line and the thousand series the APS-C line. By that logic, I am hopng for a fully fitted APS-C 4K camera to be either A7000 or A8000. And I am guessing the single digits is parallel series to the thousand series, and they don’t mix.

        1. No. That has never been stated by Sony, that’s just an assumption.

Companies are more concerned with price points. You only have to look at the introductory price points of the NEX 7 and A7 to work it out.

    3. Yeah, a5000 is more like NEX-3N with 20 mpix and WiFi added. But then NEX-5t replacement at NEX-5t release price does not make much sense in light of a6000, there is simply not enough space between them to fit another model. And of course placement of a3000 BELOW a5000 is awkward.

      1. Nex5 successor doesn’t have to be below a6000. It can be a a6000 with different way of use.
More compact, with no VF but a bigger brighter touch screen

        1. Yeah that is what I am looking for. I cheap walk around/family party/concert camera with a fast and good sensor. If I wanna be creative I can bring my other camera.

          1. If it is “cheap” as you want, it is below a6000. “cheap walk around/family party/concert camera with a fast and good sensor” which does not have controls for you to be too creative is a5000.

    4. There are no direct replacements due to consolidation of the models. For example, Sony stated that the a6000 has succeeded both the NEX-6 and NEX-7. Now some would argue that the NEX-7 hasn’t been replaced because the a6000 is different ergonomically and some features & pricing are different
      – but it has been squeezed out by the a6000 and a7 nonetheless (sorry Trinavi fans).

1 to 1 feature / design evolution is irrelevant to Sony’s current product positioning. NEX is no more and direct replacements are not coming. It’s better to focus on what the current line holds and not on how the NEX line was.

      1. You are so right, but since I look for a new camera in my underwater house I need the position of the shutter to be the same, and the size of the camera too. The A6000 is too big, but A5000 still fit, even with the pop up flash. So size does matter in some (underwater) cases. 🙂

  9. Get on with filling the single digit alpha line already. All you’ve got is a bunch of 7s.
Nobody cares if you squeezed in another incremental improvement on the base model.

  10. Yay! A new body! Now that we have a kit zoom that can resolve 24 MP, both pancakes updated, a fast UW, and quality control of the zeiss lenses is worth the money, I’m glad to see Sony spend some resources on new bodies.

      1. what else could one resort to given Sony’s bizarre obsession with updating bodies while neglecting even the most basic lenses? The thing is, NEX/a-APSC could be a really nice system if only a handful more lenses existed or were usable. Twice last week I discussed buying a first CSC with some people, and without even being prompted they remarked about Sony “… ah, yes, but there are almost no lenses”. And these were not gear nerds like me. 🙂
I’ve come to the conclusion that Sony simply does not have enough knowledgeable people to design optics. They know all about electronics, but outsource half of the optics to Zeiss, who not only take a hefty cut for that, but also leave the manufacturing to whoever Sony contracts.

  11. What’s wrong with these people at sony…they seem o release a new camera every week and no lenses. Still have a few sony nex but went back to canon as my main camera. I’m also not buying a7s since my 5d mkiii does a pretty great job at high iso and we don’t really need higher iso capability. Without good native lenses sony has nothing to offer for more serious photographers.

  12. I think this is going to be a successor of Nex 5t than A5000 as the latter was released just a few months back.

    1. I was thinking the same. I hope it will keep the size, so it can fit my underwater house bought for the 5N. The A5000 still fit.

    1. Not really. The A5000 was more intended as a replacement for the NEX-3N, and is a nice upgrade from that camera. If you own NEX-5N/R/T, then you will lose some features, and get slightly worse build quality, if you choose the A5000. I guess Sony wants people like you to go for the A6000 instead.

  13. There is ONE camera that is the best, ultimate and optimal for every user. One and only one. When will some company make that camera? What’s with all these models supposedly made for different users and with different prices? Make one camera for everyone, for every imaginable use case, and make it affordable for everyone. We shouldn’t have to put up with all these confusing alternatives from different manufacturers.
ONE camera from ONE manufacturer that makes EVERYONE happy. Make it happen!

    1. That would be a good quality, highly usable 20,000 ISO, 10 FPS burst, 90 fps HD, 10 bit, 4K internal APS-C. That would also be the main cash cow for any company.
And if you make m43(consumers) and FF(Premium) models of the same specs as above, that company will just be so awesome.

    2. That reminded me of my time in a hospital bed due to an accident. I quietly took everything administered by the hospital staff – various tablets, various injections, etc, at different times of the day. The guy on my next bed broke his bones around 40 places and been there 2 months already ahead of me. One day he just turned to the nurse and told her “Why so many injections? I’ve become like a sieve. Why so many? Just give one injection, no?. Make one injection that would suffice. With so much of your experience, you should be able to make one. Not like this tray full of injections Just one”

  14. I bought a RX100 M3 just because the NEX 5T has that annoying detachable flash unit. Before that I had bought the A6000 but it was just too bulky for me, I really didn’t like the size of it. If the A5100 has a built-in flash, a faster focus, touch-screen, maybe a built-in viewfinder and Sony somehow keeps it the same size as the NEX 5T that would be really awesome.
