The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART lens should be shipping in May.

The new Sigma 50mm ART lens is supposed to give a very close Zeiss Otus performance. But we still don’t know yet what the price will be. But according to Photorumors we can expect Sigma to ship the lens in May. This is what Sigma stuff present at the Photography show in NEC (Birmingham) told to a Photorumors readers.

Sigma already confirmed the lens will come in A-mount too (article here). And a first quality comparison with other 50mm lenses has been posted last week (article here).

  1. This won’t ship in May. Perhaps May 2015, or 2016, or…

It will likely be very nice indeed, but don’t count on getting one anytime soon!

    1. That May date is for the Canon version which is usually first followed by a Nikon version a couple months later. I doubt that you will see this for Sony A-mount before the 4th quarter if at all in 2014.

  2. They did better than me at finding information; I was at the show and asked similar questions about the lens of the guy on the Sigma stand; he knew nothing at all beyond telling me that I could be signed up to be notified when it was launched.

    1. Confirmed. The guy at the Sigma stand could not give me any info about the lens. It was in a glass case – you could look at it through the case & that was it. Nothing else.

It might be out in May but that will only be for Nikon / Canon. Sony A-mount will most probably come later.

  3. I want a STABILIZED 50/1.4 or better 58/1.2 :O I heard that Canon is preparing a 50/1.4 IS. So keep hoping and by-passing Sigma probably :>

  4. Anybody have feedback on the lens quality of the Sigma 18-35 2.8 for A-mount? Has there been any reviews for the A-mount version?
    Dan

      1. I think you made my point, probably better than I, which is that the Sigma Art 18-35 1.8f lens had been announced forever ago, has been released in other mounts and is yet to be released for the Sony mount. Now we expect a release of this new Art lens in two months. I think not, I think the newly announced lens is a long way off from being in retail shops; based on historical information discussed at the beginning of this paragraph.

        1. Agree completely. Sigma can make way more money on Nikon and Canon mounts. Why in the world would they rush an A-mount lens out, when Sony accounts for less than 8% of Sigma’s sales?

Answer, they dont rush it out.

  5. This lens looks and sounds good but my Zeiss 50 1.4 ZA is far superior. It exists. I take photos with it and love the results. I put value in the lens actually being available to me.

Sigma have announced this lens way early and I’m sure it’s hurt sales of the Zeiss 50 1.4 ZA since the day it was announced. How long till the Sony version of the ART comes out? Just refer to the USB Dock to see how much priority Sony Amount gets from Sigma. Maybe it’s worth the wait for some, but I think Sigma needs to get their amount lenses to market faster than this and quit all the delays. ART stands for “Announce a year before Release Time”

      1. nope. never said that. that’s kind of my point! the lens might is so far a mirage, especially for A-Mount.

        1. Your writing is totally unclear. I’m guessing you mean, “…is far superior. It exists.” as a single point, whereas as-written it can be read as two points (“…is far superior. (Implies you’ve compared it to the Sigma) *and* It exists.”)

Using a colon instead of a period before “It exists.” would have been much clearer. I don’t want to be a grammar pedant, but you set yourself up to be misunderstood.

Yes, the lens has so far been vaporware. But your statement might have a very short relevance/shelf-life.

          1. Fair enough. It’s just funny how these forums and rumours have changed the marketplace. We now accept hypothetical “better than Otus” “cheaper than Zeiss ZA” competition to existing products.
If Sigma are going to do it, great. I dunno, maybe I have rumour burnout. Chasing A mount news is getting really tiresome.

          2. The uncurated nature of the Internet makes everything about photography tiresome. Unplugging from the peanut gallery, rumor-mongering, and sometimes outright slurring/politiking is an easy way of resuscitating your love for photography, and enjoying the great equipment that you have.

          3. Amen to that, and curses to the polar vortex! 😉 looking forward to better weather for outdoor shooting! I have SAR fueled cabin fever! 🙂

    1. I agree. Those tests look cooked and/or flawed. I own the Zeiss and it seems to me the purple fringing in the test is because it is out of focus.

  6. I’m sure it will be great and I look forward to the reviews. However, the Zeiss 50mm is outstanding and I have no regrets in terms of real world use. It offers the same superb image quality I’ve come to expect from Zeiss. It’s nice to know the competition is catching up though. It can only be good for all photographers in the end.
