(UPDATED: SR2) 4K FF camera NOT(!) coming at NAB in April.

Well, as I told you yesterday the A77II A-mount camera is scheduled for a late Spring announcement. UPDATED: sources shared new information about the Sony 4K camera displayed last year at the NAB show (see picture on top). Well that camera could NOT be announced at the coming NAB show. Seems like we have to wait much longer to get a camera like this 🙁

    1. Very skeptical of the built in ND but that would be sweet. F5/55 XAVC 2k quality is what I’m really hoping for.

  1. So expect a similar design to the prototype? It’s not for me but I can see them selling like hotcakes, especially with ibis

          1. Disaster I can not imagine to keep focus 4k on FF sensor . Super 35mm is enough . With 4k if you miss focus it looks terrible . Gh4 seems the best choice , sensor size for 4k is perfect and if you miss apsc sensor size you can use speedbooster .

          2. I suspect there will be crop modes like F55 so you can S35 or APS-H if you want. Also !GASP! autofocus on par or better than the A6000. I know AF is heresy but I think that may be changing.

  2. If it does have mechanical IBIS, it has to be like the floating Olympus system, since the existing (A-mount) system is inherently noisy, a battery drainer and prone to overheating when used for longer periods (all due to unavoidable friction). All of which would be killing when shooting professional video…
This is where the Olympus system using a floating system with magnetic liquid excels.

      1. It’s been rumoured for ages they bought the 5 axis technology from Olympus and also that it was coming soon in there new cameras.. So disappointed if it’s only 2 axis.

        1. this is a professional video camera, shooting 4k with any stabilization will create overheating. 2 axis is already very good for such a high spec camera.

          1. I know Joe- I shoot pro video with a99 which I do actually really like. Personally I would prefer though really good 1080p quality i.e blackmagic cinema quality 10 bit 4.4.2 and raw with 5 axis stabilisation. It would be amazing. Are you sure about the heat if it used a floating sensor like in the em1? I don’t see why it would overheat using the olympus mechanical stabilisation?

          2. On a FF sensor or even APSC on-sensor stabilization is unheard of, the Canon C100/300 and 1DC have no stabilization at all. Olympus have a 43rd sensor with very low bitrate so it can support video. But 4k data rate given both processing and stabilization would create a lot of heat. I don’t see how they can pull it off, of course I want them to, but I doubt it.

          3. Yep I know- but I didn’t start the rumour- its been on this forum for ages that sony are implementing 5 axis ibis into their A mounts.

        2. Yep, that’s why it is called a rumor. Some other name is also wishful thinking.

Why would Olympus give Sony their 5-axis technology. Why would it all of a sudden work on an FF sensor. Everything is possible, but not everything will happen.

          1. Sony helped Olympus to come out of their financial problems, now they have a partneship agreement.

      1. er no- but if that’s the case screw the adapter and then give us a 5 axis IBIS A-mount which is what I thought had been coming all along- seriously gutted

  3. With FZ mount, you can have A mount, B mount, C mount, D mount, E mount, F mount, G mount, H mount… and all the way till X mount~

Alpha systems are for everyone, with their own favorite alphabetical mount name~=D

  4. I hope it is good and no more muddy video look like current sony A mount camera. Although im planning to get fs700 in this few week, but i will still put my eye on this camera and see review. I think it cant record raw and super slow motion like fs700 does and maybe limit on 10bit the most. But fs700 is way bigger and if this good i will get it for some aerial shooting etc which is more convenient and less weight. Wish list: price reasonable, having 10bit, slow motion at least 120fps, can use auto focus on A and E-mount lenses.

  5. lets dump A and E mount, wellcome FZ
but if you put A7000 FZ in your jacket, it’ll tear your pocket with their strange FZ claws, have no idea what is that for

          1. Any news on an a99 replacement? I want to upgrade but have been hearing of a replacement coming spring this year. …

          2. I’m ready to buy and would hate to get something only to have it replaced right after. Now I know with electronics something new will always come out but I just don’t want it to happen the next month or two. Also its been so long since the a99 was released that I feel like a new ff a mount should be here……. Any info on it SAR Admin?

          3. What does no mean :), if its a sports camera it better be at least as good as the A99 if not better. So what does no mean?

          4. Ok thanks, in your opinion, will there be a sports camera? (i would be the first one to buy it)

  6. E-mount and IBIS…Let’s just say the IBIS part is true, this would still be a dilemma for me since I probably won’t like the DSLR form factor, and if this model really is video optimized, it’s not likely for it not to come with a low pass filter.

  7. It used to be that Sony had more camera models than lenses, now they have more mount types than lenses too!

    1. Seriously? Sony may be releasing a 4k camera with adaptable mount that can be both A and E mount and people still complained. And FZ mount has been around for a while.
A6000 rumor= “urgh the price is cheap it must be a downgrade from nex 6/7. Must have cheap plastic body”
      A6000 released= ” no 4k no buy. Urgh no tri-navi, no buy!”
This 4k rumor=” omg another new mount? sony has more mount than lens”

Imagine if sony released cheap 4k raw camera with 14 stop dynamic range, FZ mount, weather sealed full magnesium alloy body, 10-axis stabilisation with z-shift on sensor focus, fastest af speed, 400fps raw burst mode, and other bells and whistle.
People still gonna complain. ” no new lens no buy / wait it doesnt do 3D? No buy / no tri-nav(seriously?), no buy / who the f**k gonna have all the spaces and processing power needed for 4k raw footage? No buy / Omg wtf is Z shift? Must be a new mount, no buy” and on and on and on..

      Whiners gonna whine.

  8. What else do we need to record video in 4k with Sony mirrorless camera like A6000, A7 and A7R besides a 1TB 400x SD XXC card;)?

  9. I am personally disappointed that it won’t have TEN axis stabilization. I really need that to make 4k videos off my cat sleeping. 5 axis isn’t enough. 2 axis is right out bad.
As Leon Shamroy always said “I’d like to thank the Academy, but I really couldn’t have done it without ten axis on sensor stabilization.”

    1. Err people have all sorts of uses for cameras mate not just to try and make an oscar feature film. The fact is 5 axis is pretty revolutionary for some types of video work. We do mostly cinematic weddings -( http://www.limelight-films.com) where time is really of the essence. 5 axis stabilisation would just be amazing for us in a full- frame camera with decent codec and not as soft as a99- 4k or not. The reason I am disappointed is because it’s been rumoured for so long the 5 axis was going to be implemented. Seriously who is talking about filming their cat?

      1. Its alright. Don’t get worked up over that comment. This is along the lines of comments similar to “too many megapixels” and “too high FPS”
He doesn’t need 5-axis stabilization, so he thinks that noone else needs it either.
Some people still shoot film as well, and will comment negatively towards any DSLR. It all falls along those lines and there is no changing that.

    2. Word. Cats deserved only the best. Infact i’m planning to sell my house and borrow money from the neighbourhood loan shark just so that i could afford the best cam for my cat. 6k raw and 10 axis stabilization gonna make such a difference to show that lovely fur through.

    3. anything for the cats since they own us and not the other way around.. My Masters call I have to go change the litter now.

  10. It’s getting more and more confusing with all these mounts…
Sony really makes it hard for sticking around

    1. For me i guess I am stuck with a99 – which I really like but I use it primarily for video and it’s a bit soft. Was really hoping for a99 upgrade with better video and 5 axis IBIS.

  11. This makes it complicated. I am very interested in a Sony a-mount camera (with IBIS) & I am waiting for a99 successor. Now it looks like we are going to have Sony 4k camera FF & a sport FF sometime this year. I spoke to a Sony rep recently & apparently the road map he has seen does not show any a99 successor. So what do I do, wait for a Sony FF release or move elsewhere.

      1. Good question. I think I have heard too many rumors ;-).

        1) 5 axis IS
        2) Improved focusing speed – looking at the a6000, I could see this happening.
        3) Focus points further apart, from reviews & other comments they seem to be a little too close.

I could go one but the main issue for me (yes this might sound stupid) was to have IS within the body. Yes there are pros & cons of each (in body or in lens) but if it is the body, you can focus more on the quality of the optics. Also you can use older non-is lenses with the body.

I have looked at the a7 / a7r as well but no IS in body. If they had done that…

I know the a99 is a good camera & I am seriously looking at it. But I would be annoyed if I went to the a99 and then in a month’s time a new improved camera is released.

        1. What you mainly use your camera for? If use for photo, A99 is really good. If for video, better forget about it, i’m disappointed with my a99 in video, muddy look. It only can perform slightly better and super low iso and above f4+ better can f8, so it mostly only usable on daytime outdoor. or your edit style add “mist/lightflex” make whole video look soft edit style feel so it will not be so obvious. Or you edit add sharpen a lot. Anyway i still love a99 for photo without any complain, but video i will be getting fs700.

      2. From a video point of view quite a lot! The video quality is really not up to scratch- especially when compare to gh3 or BMCC. Not so soft for one thing- a better quality codec 10bit 4:4:2 , the ability to shoot raw(video) ,Higher frame rates would be a great bonus but most of all also 5 axis IBIS which is just amazing in the EM1.

      3. Cleaner high ISO (at least up to 6400), better sensor readout, better codec, 4K, WiFi, higher FPS, and adaptable with Manual Zeiss lenses (M mount)

  12. This seems to address two very serious issues with current E mount cameras.
The larger FZ mount allows more space that is lacking in the E mount.
It takes E or A adapters and is now capable of including IBIS
There has been some comments about only 2 axis..but lets wait and see how it works before critisizing it.
Since this is strongly geared towards 4K video it is quite possible that this 2 axis IBIS may actually be better for this purpose than 5 axis.
The fact that this camera will work with both A and E mountlenses is with IBIS is actually a big step towards a universal camera.
I do not know if this is the anticipated high end hybrid camera with z shift..in fact it sounds as if it is not..perhaps this is the suprise weve been expecting as it is not one of the cameras we have been talking about.
I have been expecting Sony to introduce various differrent types of cameras this year in anticipation of the huge sensor advances next year.

    1. “The larger FZ mount allows more space that is lacking in the E mount.”

What space are you referring to? If you mount an e-mount adapter on to FZ mount, the flange distance and mount diameter will still be e-mount. The bigger body of this FZ camera may allow a moving sensor mechanism for IBIS, but body size is not limited in native e-mount bodies. Sony could make a native e-mount body with a coffee machine in the back if they wanted to.

In other words, there is no inherent lack of space in e-mount bodies – the mount does not limit this.

      1. Larger diameter
Acording to the headline the mount is larger and the camera has IBIS which sony said they cannot include onE mount.
That is the info I based this comment on.

        1. @animalsbybarry:disqus
Would you (or anyone) have any guesses about the A mount adapter specs – Is it sans pellicle mirror?

        2. The FZ mount is larger, of course, but any e-mount adapter will have the standard e-mount mount on it, surely.

Any e-mount adapter will be subject to the same limitations with regards to mount dimensions as any native e-mount camera (if those limitations even exist).

        3. I could be wrong but I don’t believe Sony said they can’t include IBIS on the E mount, what they said was that they couldn’t include IBIS on E mount cameras and still meet their targets for size, weight, power consumption, etc.
If, theoretically, Sony’s plan was to put an E-mount in a body the size of an A99 or larger, I suspect that they wouldn’t have a problem implementing IBIS.
Another thing – IBIS doesn’t have to move the sensor. Since the IBIS is specifically described as 2-axis, it is possible that what is happening is pixel shift stabilization that e.g. the RX1 uses for video. If that’s the case, it’s possible that this IBIS isn’t meant for photographic use. Either that, or Sony figured out a way to adapt it for photographic use.

          1. Since this camera has a clear emphasis on 4k vidio it is quite likely that this IBIS is very video friendly.

          2. Agreed. I’m willing to bet that “2-axis IBIS” = pixel shift which, when combined with an E-mount lens with OSS will enable “Active OSS” or whatever that function is called on the VG series (combining pixel-shift stabilization with OSS)

        4. Why repeat this again when I already pointed out to you on two occasions that Sony did NOT state that the E mount is too small to incorporate IBIS?

They stated that the current form factor of E mount cameras (specifically the shallow depth of the body designs) leaves no room for IBIS. Which says nothing about the mount depth, let alone mount diameter.

    2. It probably will not work with e-mount lenses, FZ flange is 19mm.

I think the current F5 / F55 cameras have optical stabilization, so accounts of its effectiveness are probably out there. Having any optical IBIS in a video camera is a great feature (2 axis or whatever). I was very disappointed when I realized the a99 steady shot was not optical in video mode (the Sony web site was not clear on that at the time).

  13. I just want a full frame under 2k. Heck- even 2k would be fine. Better EVF, no lag and newer mirror technology. Fix the video I guess (I’m not a video guy) and that is it! Reality is, we haven’t been waiting that long for such a camera. I do acknoweldge that it is probably good for alpha users that we don’t get new cameras every year as well. Helps stabilize used prices and expensive gear and in reality- it’s not necessary. If Sony really wants to advance the tech it takes time. I look foward to more a-mount news!

    1. That would get my money too… Sadly it doesn’t look like an affordable ff a-mount is on the cards so I’ll have to settle for an a77ii

    1. If a diverse range of mounts was the deciding factor Nikon and Canon would have already gone bankrupt… Sadly for Sony that ain’t the case… Any guess as to how long until they come out with yet another new mount?

    1. From the looks of it, the FZ mount is substantially larger in diameter compared to the E-mount and A-mount. Based on that, you can construct an adapter that has the E-mount set behind the FZ-mount bayonet to accommodate the shorter flange distance.

      1. That would be interesting if it could work. Thus far there are no A or E mount adapters, however Sony showed off at least a mock-up of the a-mount adapter last year.

  14. I recon it’ll cost around $3800.
No point in making it any more expensive, since above this price point there are alternatives.

  15. have a77 and love it. been waiting and waiting for a99 successor, and i’m about to switch to nikon as i have only invested in 3 sony lenses and need a FF soon. there were a few SR4 rumors about the a99 successor but none was even close

    1. No logical reason to switch to Nikon. You lose the EVF for a start and will have to start chimping again. An A99 Mk2 is clearly on its way.

    2. Why not an a99?
I have an a77 and 4 lenses (a fifth is coming soon) plus my girlfriend just get 2 days ago a new a77 for $800, vertical grip and extra battery included. a77 and a99 are still excellent cameras and the A-mount will continue alive.
I am waiting for the new “a99I” because the a99 could bring down its price and I will get it.

  16. Why no 1Dx/4Ds cam? How can Sony make money on this cam? I wonder if Canon 1d C was successful at all. This a big risk especially with all Sony cuts and layoffs.

    1. It is less of a risk than a high performance sports still camera because Sony has an established customer base of video professionals already as well as the R&D and technology from it’s pro video division at its disposal. It really is a matter of taking their existing technology and putting it into the a-mount body form factor.

    2. Sony is already a player in the high-end video market so I think there’s a built-in customer base that they can immediately appeal to right off the bat. That makes this sort of camera much lower risk overall compared to trying to compete with something like the 1Dx or D4 where the Sony brand has no real credibility and no existing marketshare to capitalize on.

  17. I would love to know if this will carry a heavy price tag like the Sony F55. Trying not to get my hopes up that this could be affordable for prosumers.

    1. I don’t think there is a market for a video camera in dSLR body for over $25,000. I would expect it to be priced lower than the f5 and hopefully more in line the the fs-700 pricing (or between the two).

        1. It seems like it could be the entry level for the F series (F3, F5, F55) given the FZ mount versus the e-mount of the FS series. The value really depends on the output they decide to enable. I don’t expect as high a price of 12k like the canon 1d-c (which seems excessive for the limitations of the slr form factor). If this can do 4K raw / 4:2:2 uncompressed at a 100Mbs (even if an optional Sony attachment is required) for under $7000 it would present a pretty good value. The FS series is limited by it’s output – avchd / only up to 35Mbs. Please Sony – no AVCHD for this a-mount F camera.

          1. FS700 + Odyssey 7q can shoot 4k raw 12bit at 60fps, so you are wrong with it.

  18. I wonder whether this could double as a professional stills camera? will they include a professional af system in the a-mount adapter? not that I care for 4k, but still curious.

  19. I imagine it will be priced slightly less than the IDC. But with a newer generation sensor and the usual Sony wide dynamic range…More good times ahead!!

    1. wait if the rumor is correct, this will be the first FF sensor in the world that shoot 4k raw with 2 axis IBIS. Well the admin said that it will be like F5/55 in a DSLR body, which means 4k RAW 120 fps is a possibility? also user’s LUT and look profile?

If its gonna be priced on the 1DC range, should be a steal!! Good times indeed.
Not that i could afford it though 😛

      1. Firstly, 4K 120fps will be impossible unless you are shooting with SSD.

Secondly, it won’t hurt F5/F55, FS700, because it won’t have Raw shooting option.

I think, It will have maximum 4k 4:2:0 60fps and 120 fps at HD.(If it will have 240fps in hd just like fs700, it will definitely hurt fs700 users like me.)

Price range would be around 5k -7k, other wise, people won’t buy, because sony won’t have such a good Iso as 1DC.

Finally, I am wondering, why would sony put this FZ mount on this camera instead of A mount only.

If you have a FZ mount only means, you will be given up the camera’s ability of taking a photo.

As a freelancer photographer and a film-maker, I would go for 1DC still because of that, if not, I will sell my 6D and 1DC and canon lenses right away now.

P.S: Or I might go with GH4, which is cheaper and better than 1DC without focal length. (4:2:2 with a XLR input is a big deal in the professional world)

        1. Yeah i meant 4k RAW with external recorder, like in f5/55 (i dont know which one that does)? Kinda like gh4 with the extra module. If it’s only 4k 4:2:0 then i’m dissapointed. 4:2:2 is quite acceptable tho.
What makes FZ mount can’t take photos? I mean if you put A-mount or E-mount in that FZ mount why cant it takes photos?

          1. FZ mount means,

there are going to consider only manual lens only…

ALTHOUGH , YOU MIGHT USE AF.but it will be Slow…

Ultimately, if you can use Fz mount such fast as A mount or Emount that’s the way to go in the future.

          2. you said you can’t take photos with the FZ mount hence my honest question to you. From your statement i thought Sony decided to cripple their FZ mount for photography. So it’s actually really quite workable.
Btw u r such a pro, congrats for having websites, definitely a pro. thumbs up.
But i really think your dolly shot on the conversation scene quite distracting, i know u love your dolly shot, but please, please use it sparingly. 🙂
Why is that every shot are wobbly dolly / steadicam shot? Can’t you use monopod or tripod or something like that?

Also if you use stabilization in post to fix that shaky steadicam footage, please make sure to turn on the rolling shutter compensation.

But what do i know, i’m not a pro, definitely can’t afford all that expensive gear and websites and pro emails. 😀

  20. The fact you will be able to use either A mount E mount (as well as other mounts). Mean that it doesn’t matter if you have invested in A mount, E mount or both. You will have access to this body…Maybe Sony isn’t as clueless as many on this forum keep banging on about….

  21. Ahahahahhah!

All that arguing if Sony’s future is E-mount or A-mount and it turns out to be ZS-mount! That is, until the next year.

I agree that we need a mount roadmap.

    X-mount sounds really cool!
