The DNG files that it produces forced me in principle to add another RAW developing program, so I chose to write a tool to convert from DNG to NEF, and keep rolling without modifying my setup.”

Isn’t just the Metabones, also option of LA-EA4 from Sony Australia.
It comes as a redemption voucher for your choice of adapter in the box – The adapter isn’t in the box.
It should offer a cannon or nikon adapter
They do, did you read? You CHOOSE the adapter you want via redemption. Nikon, Canon, Leica M etc from Metabones or the LA-EA4 from Sony.
Complicated?
I think that Barry is just snake bit.
Are U.S customers getting the same deal? I would love a sony or maybe a nikon adapter.
But will the adapter increase camera megapixels as well? CMOS sensor tech is dead, wait 2015 when sony presents its three layered organic stacked one terapixel sensor
And while you wait, try to save yourself some public embarassment
Adapter of you choice, Canon, Nikon, Lecia or Sony. It’s via redemption but as I purchased the Kit th show throw in a canon one anyway
At the digi direct event in Sydney they said the free adapter was with the body only options.
Do you know if the adapter redemption offer is Aus retailer wide, or was it just digi direct? I’ve ordered body only through someone else, but would love the EF adapter (…and not to have to pay for it…)
I’ve seen the offer at multiple Australian stores so I guess it’s for every camera from Sony Australia.
Yes, if you order the A7 with the 28-70 native kit lens there is no adapter offer. The logic is that if you have a native lens you have less of a need for an adapter. The free adapter offer is valid only body-only purchases.
Cool! That’s a pleasant surprise for me. I figured that was the logic too. I have no interest in the kit, so I just ordered the body.
I have been told on multiple occasions that the redemption is available on all kits, not just body only.
Sony Aus employee here. The adapter is only available with the body only configurations. The kit lens costs more than the $200 it adds to the body cost, so if we added the adapter as well we’d… not sure if we’d lose money but we sure wouldn’t make much.
Yes, that is one reason why I preordered so early, the redemption for the Metabones adapter would be worth it, as much as I have many of cheap adapters already… I am still impressed with the build quality of the Speed Booster so this would be great.
Although I do worry if the adapter’s opening would accommodate for the full frame sensor size though…?
Which adapter do you plan to get? They should all cover the full image circle, except the EF ones you will need the smart adapter III (designed for the VG900).
The Canon one for most adaptability.
I replied on another topic before and I have a LOT of manual focus lenses and that adapter would give me the most flexibility.
The Speed Booster adapter uses a 0.71x focal reducer that is only for using full frame lenses on APS-C NEX cameras or A7,A7r and VG900 full frame cameras in APS-C mode. The Metabones Smart Adapter III for full frame Canon EF lenses does not have a focal reducer and works in full frame mode on the A7,A7r and VG900.
Jealous especially if the LAE4 was an option. I’d love one of those but I don’t think I’m going to go for one immediately.
It is one of the options. Some retailers are doing bundles to also include the Alpha mount 28-75mm f2.8 SAM lens to go with the included adapter.
That I didn’t know, dam opted for the Canon. I would of like a good fast zoom at launch
So what happens if I use my nikon to e-mount speed booster on the A7-R?…
You’ll get an APS-C image circle that’s twice as bright.
That guy talks so smooth, I want to pay him to read me a bedtime story every night.
So… Should we be canceling pre-orders and waiting till this comes to the US? Or will this be in all of the preorders? I’d really like the LEA4.
have anyone spoted somea7/7r samples using leica m elmarit 28mm apsh?
I’m curious about why would you need to convert arw to nef? Unless use Nikon’s raw converter (in which case you seriously need to look at adding lightroom and/or dxo to your workflow), it seems pointless. Surely nef would risk a whole host of compatibility issues? There’s an argument for converting to dng, but only if your raw converter is incompatible.
it is stupid Sony again…..it is how the cameras should have been sold in the first place… offer adapters for other brands since there are virtually no lenses for these stupid cameras…encourage users to want to use these with their existing lenses…Sony marketing fail yet again…
Sony should adopt this promo for the rest of us.
Assuming this adapter deal goes global…
is the best bet for someone without a back catalogue of compatible lenses to go with the LA-E4?
After checking out the Metabones site it seems most of my lenses sit in the MF only category and I’ve got some FD lenses that could do that for me with a cheap £20 adapter.
I’m assuming that the AF on sony/minolta with the LA-E4 is going to be much faster even if my EF lenses could be sold and traded for compatible ones….is that right?
Man if this promo goes global, I would likely pick up the Canon to E Mount Smart Adapter, would love to make use of the EF 100 macro f/2.8 and I already have a Nikon to E mount, meaning I can borrow any of my photographer friends lenses 😛
If you don’t have any other lenses, I’d say it depends a lot on what you want to do.
The LA-EA4 will get you very fast AF on existing A mount lenses. Keep in mind you won’t have image stabilization. Also, while Mist A mount lenses are good, there’s few exceptional lenses, especially cheap ones.
Any of the electronic adapters for other brands will make AF painfully slow, but it’ll work. You’ll also (for the canon one at least) get the Image stabilizer working, but you may be better off manually focusing. Also, canon, Nikon, the Leica M mount, etc have some absolutely outstanding lenses. Some of them are even pretty cheap.
I bought the Metabones for Canon, because I have a few thousand dollars worth of Canon lenses I can use just about any time I want. The AF is slow, and it’s a tiny bit quirky on my NEX-6, but it works. If it weren’t for that, I’d have gotten the LA-EA4 so I have some fast autofocus options, and get one or two cheap A mount lenses. If I can find this deal for the US, I’ll cancel my pre-order and get one that gives me that LA-EA4 free.
I’ll probably end up getting the Metabones EF adapter when my A7 arrives.
No new rumours, what about the contax moving sensor? The A7 killed the Df before it was born do you think Sony will launch a D4 killer? A new rx1 or new nex(kind of)cameras?
You’ll start seeing those rumours probably by December, gonna have to wait for the A7/r fever to pass 🙂
Don’t you think the df was killed when they announced the price?
The more I think about that Df, the more I think it was a bd move by Nikon. I do love dials and all, but that camera should have been at most as expensive as the D600. Lesser sensor, no video, lesser grip. It only has better battery life.
That is far from the truth…Nikon killed the DF for some, not all, with the price, the DSLR design (rather than a digital FM), and the APS-C sized AF system. And the A7/A7r, though innovative, are still far from being a success, as they lack a sufficient native lens selection. Sony better focus on lenses now, as that is the key to success. Unfortunately, we still need to wait for a great full frame MILC…
this is ridiculous statement….Nikon sells hundreds of thousands more lenses and cameras than Sony ever could. The DF will sell 5 to 10 times the numbers of what the A7 and A7r combined will sell. Don’t kid yourself. DF killer. A7/r joke cameras with no lenses and an uncertain future? Sure they killed DF. Un-huh.
It’s kind of surprising they’re giving away lae4 and the canon af version. It’s one thing to give away 60 dollar mf only adapters but giving away adapters that cost more than 10% of the camera? I think there was a video where the sony au rep talked about this and he only said metabones adapters. Either way, great if it’s true but i have a feeling the dealer may have misunderstood the promotion of free mf adapters for all adapters. Unfortunately, people wont know until they start getting the actual boxes.
I have had them cite the actual promotion from Sony and it specifically mentions the Metabones Smart Adapter III, which is more like 20% of the camera price.
They really do need to give away the metabones adapter with purchase of A7/A7r because when you think about it, when these cameras launch there will be only 1 FE lens available, the 35 f2.8, and who knows how limited that will be in supply.
Only the A7 will be bundled with the kit lens. So basically if you want the A7r, and I bet most early adopters want that one, then you are out of luck with lenses made for the system unless you find a copy of the Fe 35.
So it’s smart business sense to in essence offer your early adopter customers a free high quality lens adapter, because for many that is the only way they will be able to use the camera at all during the holidays. And keep in mind that the reaction of early adopters will be crucial in creating the make or break impression for the rest of the market.
Smart business would be offering LA-EA adapters. Why? Sony!
Actually, I think smart business would have been to do something about the lens lineup in addition to making top class bodies. Maybe this camera and the adapters are Sony’s answer to the lens problem? A-mount lenses are sub-par, they know it, so start over with in lens stabilization and a whole new line. I don’t know, but it’ll be a long wait. I don’t see why else they wouldn’t have made the E and A mount a little more compatible when it comes to stabilization. Offer IBIS for E mount cameras? Offer new A-mount lenses with image stabilization built in? Just something so we can take better advantage of all the lenses out there. I hope at least third party lens makers will see the light and offer new A-mount lenses with Image stabilizers in the lens, rather than taking them out just for the A-mount version.
I’m sorry but which of the 6 Zeiss full frame A-mount lenses are sub-par? Curious. And which of the 70-300G and 70-200 G (I or II) and 70-400 G (I or II) are subpar? And, after you pull up the reviews and charts… which of the 50 macro or 100 macro are sub-par?
Just looking for a little clarity.
+1 The usual myths.
Maybe I’m confused and misinterpreting the data, but I can’t find any charts or numbers (speaking purely about resolution for now) where a Sony brand lens excells against a similar Canon. It seems strange to me, so I’m hoping I’m missing something, but image samples all show the Sony 70-200, 70-300, and 70-400 as being less sharp and more chromatic aberrations than comparable lenses. I’ve not looked into macro much yet.
The Zeiss labeled ones are about the only exceptions I’ve seen, where they seem the same or better than an excellent equivalent from Canon or Nikon
Trust me, I find it hard to believe Sony’s lenses are that much worse, but I can’t find any data to the contrary. I know it’s all about whether you can take a nice picture or not (which is exactly why I gave up on Canon and went back to Sony), but since I’m into astrophotography, resolvable detail and chromatic aberration are huge issues. I know it may not matter for most photography, but for me, I need data that shows Sony lenses with excellent resolving power at a telephoto focal length.
I would be quite happy if I could find this, so any help is appreciated.
I am wondering what samples you have seen 🙂 The 70-300L is slightly better than the 70-300G, but costs twice as much. The 70-400 was better than both the old Canikon equivalents and now it has a successor. Of course, now that there is a FF mirrorless camera, more technically correct comparisons can be carried out, though I doubt they’ll show anything much different from what we already know. Meanwhile, Photozone.de has great data on some Sony lenses. The Zeiss for A-mount are as good or better than competing lenses. G lenses are also excellent. To say that Sony lenses are sub-par simply does not make any sense.
Here’s a hands-on experience with the 70-400, the guy also has provided excellent images:

Would be awesome if someone had some good data with an NEX and a canon 70-200/2.8 vs the sony ones, and see how they compare on the same body. Or better yet, the a7/a7r.
Why only Australia? If it also cover US, I must order A7R immediately!
