NEX-5T, A3000 and Zeiss 16-70mm preorder ranking at Amazon US.

If you are curious to know how popular the new products are at Amazon US than you have to check out the following three rankings:

1) The Zeiss 16-70mm is on position 10 of the most sold lenses at Amazon US (Click here). It’s by far the most (pre-)ordered Sony Lens at Amazon!
2) The A3000 can be found at position 32 at Amazon’s DSLR ranking (Click here). Yep, it’s listed as DSLR camera and not as mirrorless!
2) Not really a top seller is the new NEX-5T which ranks 10th at the Mirrorless Camera ranking (Click here).

The ranking changes hourly and is based on the amount of orders and preorders. It’s not a scientific analysis but it gives us an idea of what’s hot and what’s not so hot. The Zeiss lens is selling fine as I rarely saw a Sony lens on the Top 10! The A3000 is also doing fine. And as expected the 5T isn’t really a hotseller.

  1. No more Alpha 37, instead we get A3000.
    What next? A5000 instead of A58, A7000 instead of A77, A9000 instead of A99?

    And then? Bye-bye A-mount, except with LA-EA2?

    1. I think that will only happen if they come out with a dual mount, then there will be no need for a A-mount only camera.

      1. [sarcasm] yeah… i know… if only they had SOME sort of an… adapter kind of thing which lets you mount A-mount lenses onto E-mount and still support auto focus [/sarcasm] 😛

im hoping in future versions with OSPDAF with single adapters with electronic coupling with correct signals for controlling a-mount lenses, this’ll make the adapter quite cheap and affordable unlike LA-EA2

        1. I don’t think most people would except buying a separate and expensive adapter adapter. I had the adapter but its kinda big and the AF lamp does not work with the adapter attached and I use the AF lamp so I sold it and just got a A57 instead of using two Nex6 at events. I think if they start making dual mount then they can start to get rid of A-mount about 4 years or so down the line and still have the adapter as a option for those that still have a older model.

          1. yes, so if on sensor phase detection autofocus is perfected then you dont need the mirror and bulk of the LA-EA2 adapter, the adapter can be made simpler and if the camera can use the same commucation protocol with the lens then all that is needed is to transfer the signal from the E mount to the A mount, thus a small, simple adapter which should be cheaper

    2. A-mount lenses will ALWAYS be useable – Sony would literally set off the end of their company if they abandoned backward compatibility. But for cameras, yeah, you got the picture.

      1. Canon and Minolta changed mounts. It doesn’t signal the end of a company. Sony could dump A-mount tomorrow if they wished.

    3. There seems to be rumours of an A77 replacement coming next month that is a SLT camera. So your end of the A mount might be premature. However there is confusion between the A77 and NEX 7 replacements as to which one it is. I’m sure the admin will clear up the confusion in the coming weeks.

  2. Why does everyone think the A mount is going, why are we all so reactionary and only think short term? Sony have just realised the 70-400mm Series II, the 70-200mm series II and 50mm ZA to name a few, hardly an investment to throw away the A mount short term!

    Si

    1. Well at the SPR sony Nex forum people are thinking that this ILCE line will be the end of the Nex cameras. Sony is just looking for a way to create a camera for the people who want a larger camera, but don’t want the mirror in the way.

      1. That sounds pretty silly. NEX has put SONY on the map and made the world stop and look…, carefully…, at SONY’s “modernity” and then learn even more about SONY’s inventiveness when the RX-100 and RX-1 changed the landscape a bit more than a little bit. If they stopped making NEX in favor of the nice-but-lumpy-and-oh-so-ordinary A3000, the world would beat a path away from their door.

      2. What is SPR Sony NEX forum?

Well, if the people there are thinking that Sony will drop its NEX system, I’d say that they are NOT thinking – NOT AT ALL! 🙂
        .

    2. That’s poor logic – everything continues until its cancelled. I’m sure the Zeiss 50 1.4 had been in the works for a LONG time, many months, if not years. So, you have to look at when these new A-mount lens projects were initiated, not when they were brought to market.

For example, if Sony decides upon a Zeiss 50 lens project and starts work in 2011, and then in 2012, before its released, they decide in 2014 the A-mount cameras will end, wouldnt you continue development on an expensive, long term product? Of course. Same thing with the 400mm and 70-200 II…they were started before they decided to can the A-mount. So they will be released…probably wont sell well at all, but at least they’ll recoup some of the costs. So, Sony will not announce the end of the A-mount until AFTER the last of the products in development comes through the pipeline.

But…make no mistake about it, the A-mount already has its tombstone engraved with an end date. There is no question.

      1. No, this assumes that anything that takes years of development will be brought to the market to recoup cost. Enter the A750, displayed in early stages, the name leaked on a Sony website during final stages, canceled last minute.

The same sources that gave us info about the officially announced cameras, stated the A mount will stay and cater to higher end markets with some overlap regarding E mount cameras.

But sure, every mount has an end date. Which usually no one knows.

        1. You are correct about the A750 being cancelled late in the game, but you didn’t disclose the whole story behind the reasons of its cancellation. If you know (which I suspect you do) then you probably cant talk about it.

          So…poor example in this case.

          1. It’s not a poor example. Any example would disprove a general claim like yours, regardless of motivation for canceling.

Similarly, lenses can be canceled in the final stages too, even after years of development. Some NEX lenses come to mind.

          2. Would you care to share some of the details… which NEX lenses were cancelled? What happened in the case of the A750?

          3. I don’t know about the NEX lenses, but the reason for dropping the A750 is well known – Sony decided to push the SLT development instead. And I for one am happy that I couldn’t have put my money into buying an A750, and then only a year later discover that the (in my opinion) much, much better A77 was released…
            .

          4. Sony themselves said why OVF was dropped. It was because of strong sales of the A55, it’s also why the A580 wasn’t available in some markets.

There is no big secret to be revealed.

          5. Thanks for the explanation of teh A750 – shame 🙁

Still interested in hearing about the cancelled NEX lenses! 🙂

      2. With one caveat – how long it would take to can the system. They have nothing else going on currently to rely on.

        1. You are making the assumption that Sony care. To these people it is numbers, they don’t care about users or photography. If the numbers don’t add up, they would drop a product line tomorrow, they have done so plenty of times.

          1. Agreed, but that assumption is based on Sony’s own statements that they will be taking their photography business very seriously. Which, imho, makes it a good assumption.

        2. I agree – they won’t bin it until they’ve got a replacement lineup out there. When/if we see e-mount fast zooms, f1.4 primes and serious macros, the a-mount’s days are going to be numbered. Given the current e-mount lineup, any talk of Sony killing off the a-mount is premature.

    3. A mount is not going, Sony has the power to bet on two horses. What they did now was two-fold: They needed an entry level camera which could compete with CaNikon and they needed to reinsure the NEX pro guys that they are still serious about high end mirrorless.

So they delivered a DSLR’d NEX3 as the A3000 at a competitive price for the entry level, and they delivered the Zeiss 16-70 for the professionals waiting for the delayed NEX-7++. Good move.

A little later they will deliver both pro E mount cameras (FF and -7++) and also new A mount cameras and lenses. They aren’t stupid though, so they will carefully watch which horse is running faster…

  3. So, does it worth to invest on E-moumt now? I’m not quite sure A-mount will go the way of the dinasours, unless the new NEX FF is not a NEX but an ILC, in that cause I’d think they have no more need for A-Mount. They need more commitmwnt fron third party lens makers like sigma, tamron, etc. Id they want E-mount to succed though.

    1. I would invest in Alpha mount FF, and E-mount aps-c.

Because I expect Sony to realease a A&E-mount body with speedbooster included with a very fast AF (not the slow AF found on the current metabones).

FF glasses are big anyway, so for me i prefer make buying it for A-mount so it is compatible for many mounts, not only E.

  4. Here is my prediction for E-mount.

E is for Every lens is adaptable but we won’t make adapters cuz we don’t wanna license other mounts.

Once PDAF on sensor rivals the autofocus from the 1Dx and D4 we’ll likely see a new A-mount adapter that is only connects the lens and the electronics for aperture control everything else will be handled by the camera.

The future E-mount FF DSLR style body will probably be slimmer than the A99 with an adapter for A-mount that will flow with the body smoothly and it wont feel like your using a mount adapter.

It is VERY doubtfull that PDAF On-Board-Sensor will EVER rival PDAF on large separate sensor chips. It is not just technically a very hard thing to do, the laws of nature may prevent it.
      .

      1. And accordingly, I am not convinced that the rumour saying Sony will drop the SLT-cameras, is true, even if it is coming from someone at Sony. It may be deliberate desinformation.
        .

  5. NEX-5T release is a real mystery, do they actually want it to sell badly?

In one of the video presentations there was the suggestion that the nfc functionality would lead to a rather funky remote tethering capability via smartphone, but there is no mention of that in the launch literature and currently no apps to support it

    1. from my understand, NFC is only used to first establish connection with playmemories mobile app and then WiFi takes over, its shown somewhere that if you do have the app it will open google play and brings up the playmemories mobile app download link

the playmemories mobile app was updated a 2 days ago which probably enables this, but in the end it uses same app

      1. Pb, your’re right about NFC. It’s only used for initial connection and Sony would have been better off implementing Bluetooth 4.0.

Those of you who prefer NFC, please explain me even one advantage of NFC over Bluetooth 4.0.

      2. Ah, thanks for the explanation about the playmemories app… we’re not allowed to buy or download those apps in Switzerland (thanks, Sony) so I wasn’t looking at them

Sure, NFC is only for initial connection (at first I thought it was totally pointless for a camera, now I realise it will simplify setting up the sync with the mobile) but there remains the question of why Sony has made the classic marketing mistake of selling the feature and not selling the benefits concerning NFC

It is even more strange in the case of this camera as NFC is the only change (apart from triluminous video support) over the previous model!

I wonder if some product manager hasn’t ‘staked his reputation’ on the ILCE concept and is consequently trying to kill the sales of rangefinder bodies from within Sony so that ILCE will appear all the more successful… rather like the situation concerning Symbian and Windows Mobile within Nokia a couple of years ago with sales of the Nokia 808 (with that special high-MP sensor camera) deliberately saboutaged from within the company management to make WM sales appear higher internally!

    2. aah, other comment is being moderated

5T is probably the same annual update that the NEX 3/5 enjoys, more effect is probably poured into other parts of camera development (FF NEX, a3000) and this was just a progressive application of current NFC tech in the camera, its released with the same body as 5R for about the same price as the 5R, users are not really loosing anything as you’re not really paying anymore for the same stuff, and all accessories designed for 5R should still work for 5T? (quite likely) so no one is really loosing out

      1. Well, 5R users are losing out on any firmware improvments which the 5T may introduce to the user interface or enhanced functionality…

A previous rumour was that there has been an interace change with the 5T (don’t understand why the 5R doesn’t support the ‘Quick-Nav’ functionality of the NEX-6 when the EVF is attached)

5R users are also seeing the second-hand value of their camera depreciate higher than if the camera had been kept in production for another 6 months

This update seems to be purely for internal consumption… “look boss, we’ve released a camera which is fully compatible with the 2013 Bravia TV range, and also the Xperia mobile range, (who cares how well it sells) isn’t that the sort of leveraging of product synergy that ought to earn me a good appraisal?”

  6. Any numbers concerning the preorders in europe ?

One thing is for sure, I’m not buying my 16-70za from sony europe for 999€, 240€ more than in the US, 270€ more than in japan.
