Amazon US ranking: NEX-6 most (pre)ordered digital camera! And the RX1 beats the A99!

While this is not a scientific measure it’s always interesting to look at the overall digital camera popularity ranking (Click here). On top you can find the Sony NEX-6 with 16-50mm kit lens. And that is not a surprise (at least for me). It’s agreta camera for the price and it takes good pictures too (Just look at the ISO samples posted right now on ePhotozine).

The real surprise is that the RX1 FF compact camera seems to outsell the Sony A99 body! Again, those are very fluctuating results and they may change soon. But could it be that the RX1 will sell more than the A99? May this is one of those unique cameras that will convince hard core Canon and Nikon owners to switch over and buy for the first time a Sony camera. Le’ts hope this will happen 🙂

One more thing: There is also a lens ranking (Click here). The most sold single lens is the 16-50mm pancake. Right behind we have the 35mm lens and on position 21 the 10-18mm zoom.

    1. ‘Better’ is hard to define though.
If it’s optically better but people can’t be bothered to buy it, it’s Sony’s loss.

      1. i need the a99 to update my aging a850. but i really want the rx1. 35mm is perfect!

        cant afford both, only 1.

screw it, follow ur heart. forget what u need to do and get the rx1 you wanted to enjoy and take EVERYWHERE.

  1. Not surprised, on paper the NEX6 could be one of Sony’s top three best cameras of all time after all the wind gets done blowing around.

It’s stellar on paper, very few criticisms of this camera. A real knock out of the park there for Sony.

This, is the Sony I knew was capable since they took over the A-Mount in 2006, and hopefully they will improve even further on this giant leap forward for them.

    1. With the nex 6 sony has shown they don’t care if they eat into their own sales. It’s clearly going to spell less sales for the nex 7

    2. But of course! In DPR forum, I’ve always maintained that this is the long term and ultimate goal of Sony – to be rid of DSLR/SLT. Hopefully, the A99 will be the last of the SLT for 35FF.

The thing is, they cannot and must not do it abruptly. They will alienate the current SLT lens users. They must do this gradually. I see a 5 yr minimum to 7 years max transition. Sony also needs time to build the lens lineup and infrastructure needed to support the migration. That takes time. When they finally complete the holy Trio in E mount- 16-35 f2.8/4.0 (10-22), 24-70 f2.8 (18-55), and 70-200 f2.8 (55-140) OSS, you’ll know that they basically have made it and the migration is complete, at least for the aps-c crop. The 35FF NEX will also need to address the lenses as true fully NEX lenses but 35FF. The difference is, the alpha lenses can serve as transition lenses. The future lenses, because of the photo-video convergence will have to have AF motors built-in to move the glass, and must have itself optimized for CD-PD hybrid AF.

Furthermore, they need the lead time to perfect the other technologies needed for the future (e.g. Fast CD-PD AF, LCD/EVF performance, sensor development, global shutter, smaller but more powerful motors, etc). Even if they can do it this year, the best strategy is still to do it gradually.

Thus, even if we like to have a 35FF NEX, the best way is to still do it in steps. The A99 will receive its due time and give Sony time to recoup its investment in it. The RX1 will lay the foundation and serve as a testing camera to learn what and how the NEX 35FF would become. At the earliest, we should see a 35FF NEX by end of 2013, or spring of 2014. A release of a 35 f1.8 OSS and a decent 24-70 zoom should be its opening salvo, with alpha lenses and adapter to make it work with them.

      1. There is only one little mistake. SLT is only a “bridge”technology…that´s right. The NEX is fine…that´s right. But there is a reason for buying a bigger sized camera…my hand is much bigger than a NEX and if you working with a camera a bigger camera is easier to handle with. And it is good to have a full portfolio of camera size as well to have a good portfolio of lenses.

Mybe they will combine the technology like now…one sensor, one processor, one technology but different use cases. So they will earn on every single market with one time cost for development.

    1. I bought one each for me, my wife, for my three kids. That makes five RX1s in total. We’ll redefine the term “family photos”.

      1. When the amazon link came out, I bought 6 of these because my two cats need to become lions and I think this is the way its going to happen.

          1. “where is that aggressiveness coming from?”

That’s odd… With your head so far up your arse, I am suprised you haven’t figured it out yourself!

    2. My wife and I recently bought an M9 each. She got silver I got the black. She got the 35/1.4 and the 28 and 50 cron’s, I got the 35 and 70 2.5’s and the 50mm noctilux 50/0.95. She only tonight said she was thinking of getting this sony as a throw-around. She likes a 35. What?!?

  2. This is why I never jumped ship. I knew sony would eventually do something big. I guess now I wont be so special when I do a event and I am the only photographer with a sony camera.

    1. that’s right, i trust sony when i look a300 n buy it for the first time 4 years ago 😀

now i more love sony, hope they will much improve with decent great lens, cool camera n innovative mind. that’s why steeve job like sony 😀

  3. Well, reason for these many preorders might be the bundle with the new PowerZoom, that hopefully Sony will offer in silver together with their NEX-5R for a reasonable price, since I don’t want a viewfinder nor an integrated flash…

  4. I have a strong feel the NEX6 will be a winner.
I also said so about the NEX-5N when it came.

Since the RX1 has a fixed lens, I believe even Canon and Nikon
users can buy one without saying the have “jumped the ship”.

As long as they keep all their big heavy DSLR’s and lenses.
Good training for the legs it is to carry heavy equipment.

  5. I am not entirely surprised about the RX1 sales. I think the cam has lots of appeal so it is a matter of seeing what the results can be (IQ, focusing speed and accuracy, usability, etc) and then we’ll know if it becomes a real milestone camera for being the first in a line of many.

I will buy one when I get the cash for it. Thinking real hard of pre-ordering now but I would need to buy it in the US. UK price is £2600 and that is just way too much for it. $2800 yankee greens is more like it. Looking at the Voightlander 35mm viewfinders and check it out, there are also old Zeiss Ikon 35mm viewfinders so grab one of those first.

  6. RX1 rocks… that is no suprise.
lense alone is 1300 dollars worth
    so body 1500-1700
it works fine so fine nothing littel
bevore… so there is nothing astonishing.
    nothing.
    litte big cinema
    film make edit

  7. It’s the first major release in anticipation of Photokina… Wait a week to see how it really sits with the camera buying crowd.

  8. Funny thing is, Sony does not have an alpha 35mm f/2 lens in her product line, but her pro-point’n shoot does. 35mm f/2 is my favorite, wide enough small enough and cheap enough. I do not doubt RX-1 is an excellent product. Sony is an interesting company least to say.

      1. The 35mm f1.8 is not a full frame lens, so no, not the same thing. Only FF 35mm Sony do is the G 1.4 – which in Australia is priced the same as the WHOLE RX1…

        1. You need to find yourself a used copy of the 35/1.4. Some people think poorly of that lens and it certainly hasn’t tested as well as my previous Canon 1.4L but it has some special character to the rendering that the Canon lacks. More classic for sure. I think I found mine for $750 USD.

  9. On the Sony UK website there is a small difference between the
NEX-5r and NEX-6 “Light metering cell”
On the NEX-5r is says :Exmor CMOS Sensor – and on the
NEX-6 it is “Exmor™ HD CMOS Sensor”.

Why the HD moniker on the NEX-6?

Everything else is identical on the inside between the two as far as I can see.
If I understand it right: both cameras have identical tech inside, only a controls are different. Right?

  10. Great stuff today… worth waiting for!!!… Already pre-ordered the a99 body and vertical grip on Amazon… already sold my a77 on ebay. Still have my Zeiss 2470 which I am dying to put on the a99…
I kept my NEX-7/CZ24 but now I am seriously thinking of putting them on ebay and getting the RX1…
Could be the perfect package… RX1 with a99/CZ2470 and the new 70400G when it comes out. The new Zeiss 50/1.4 looks awesome too!!!…
I’ve been a Sony camera fan since my 1st DSC that I bought in Tokyo in 1999.
I think Sony excelled themselves today… very pleased!!!

  11. Have to admit I was somewhat amazed when I saw the RX1 a few days ago on SAR… Unbelievable!!!… However, I am not surprised at the pre-order reaction. This really is a much cheaper alternative to the Leica M9. The fixed lens has it’s pros and cons… Major pro would be it is custom designed to work with the sensor in that particular camera… no compromises!!!… looking forward to reading some reviews about this camera… and seeing some output!!!…

    1. I was recently in NYC and took my Canon G10- (I also own two Canon 1DS MK 2) nothing else. I probably shot 98% of my images set at approx 35mm-the other at approx 80mm-sure interchangable lenses would be nice but for my style and lots others 35mm is all you really need-this camera will allow HUGE prints if needed or tremendous cropping if needed if a tele effect is in order…
BTW I’m sure a lens of this quality for a Leica would easily be more $$$ than the entire RX1

      my $0.02 worth

    1. Probably because it is plastic rather than magnesium, doesn’t have tri-navi, and is lower resolution. The Nex-7 is still top of the line.

  12. the pool of cameras that can be preordered currently is a small number of mostly insignificant models, so this is pretty useless information.

  13. A99 pre-orders being low should be expected if professionals are using it. Surely pro’s need to see reviews and plenty of sample shots by non-Sony affiliated review sites.

RX1 is a stylish quality camera with tremendous brand backing (Zeiss) and extremely convenient/portable build! Surely pro’s need to try out the A99 first?

      1. Rich die hard Nikon canon Full Frame Pro user who just want a 2nd Body –
        “RX1 is GOD!”

Normal Canon Nikon User on A99 –
“Sony not for pro, just a big version of CyberShot”

        1. sorry.. it should sound like this

Rich die hard Nikon canon Full Frame Pro user who just want a 2nd Body –
          “RX1 is GOD!”

Rich die hard Nikon canon Full Frame Pro on A99 –
“Sony not for pro, just a big version of CyberShot”

  14. well i started my switch to sony when the 5r came out so i’m still waiting on that. By the looks of things once i can gather up more money, I will most likely pick up the a99 because nikon’s d600 doesn’t look that promising although i will still love nikon

  15. I suppose the reason why RX1 is so popular is that many have FF DSLRs but who can claim to have a FF compact? I bet the number could be even higher if it had a built-in EVF. That is the only thing holding me back from getting one.

  16. I have read a lot of positive feedback on the new Sony offering on the Nikon and Canon forums. The NEX is clearly recognized to be much better camera than the EOS-M or Nikon 1. The NEX-6 should do thus really good in sales. The RX-1 should do so too, despite beeing fixed lens it should be a good seller.

Where I am not so sure is the A99. After reading the full specs I said to myself WTF, especially the crippled fps is astonishing. They threw out all the benefits of the SLT on this, even the A57 or A77 do much better. The AF point spread was also a dissapointment although I think it will focus insanely fast. High ISO performance will be most likely rubbish due to the SLT, but that remains to see. But what is beeing said on the Nikon and Canon forums is that the Sony lens lineup is lacking several lenses and I have to agree. I really wish Sony would wake up and in the next two years release masses of new lenses, not only refresh the curent lineup. Until they will have the proper lens line up, they will not attract that many Canikon users to switch. The bodies are appealing, but without propper lens choices are useless.
