(SR5) HOT surprise! Super secret mirrorless camera to be announced on September 12th!

UDPATE: This turned out ot be a half correct rumor. The camera will be anmed RX1. it is a FF mirrorless camera but it has a fixed lens 🙁

This is a super hot “little” rumor I got. A surprising new and “professional Mirrorless camera” is going to be announced on Wednesday. I have been told that this is (and now was…LOL) a super well kept secret. I am working on it right now to get some details. I repeat the sources underlined that this is a “Game Changer” camera!!!! If I would be you…and you have the money to spend on a PRO NEX…I would consider to sell your [shoplink 8454 ebay]Sony NEX-7 on eBay[/shoplink] 🙂
UPDATE: Also Steve Huff “broke” the info although he didn’t write that this is actually a new PRO NEX cameras.

I will work this weekend to get some details but it will be a tuff battle to find out more. Will do my best…you really have to stay tuned on SAR. Things are going fast now. Subscribe our RSS feed and Twitter stream and join the Facebook comunity! Really, this is going to be one hell of a time now on SAR!!!

Note: I will list all new Photokina Sony stuff at Alphacameradeals.com. Subscribe the RSS feed and join the Facebook page.

          1. @Frank, there seems to be an issue with trust regarding Sony a lot of people seem to have problems buying Sony products for this reason I don’t know if it a sort of Microsoft scenario where they are hated for being so successful. Another strange thing as a long term Nikon user I am no stranger to Sony sensors the D800 sensor is amazing and I am loving using it . However using the same sensor Sony doesn’t seem able to get as good results as Nikon or even Pentax which is odd given that it is their tech

    1. I have to echo the same sentiment. Anything with equivalent specs to the 5n, and with a full-frame sensor + good WA performance would rock my world.

  1. Wow. What an exciting month. Steve Huff mentioned something to drool over from Sony. This has peaked my interest quite a bit. More details please.

    1. Steve mentions Nex6 and its not that camera…………something that hasn’t been leaked thus far.

He say Sony will own Photokina this year
      😉

        1. Well, if it’s not full frame, I would not buy it. I have been impressed with any recent camera( maybe a little bit with the D800E). I stick with Sony because of the peaking and EVF.

          1. Thats my main problem with this site. SR5 is meant to be a rumor that will almost 99% be real. Yet Andrea tells us he has sold his NEX 7 in favor of ‘vague information’.

With all due respect…say things more straight and don’t tell us that its work selling a camera because ‘vague information’ is enough. If you did sell it, you sold it because you know what you got is real. Step up to the plate properly man…

          2. The SR5 rating apparently relates to the fact that a Nex pro body is coming, which means a more advanced or tougher model than Nex7.

What is (still) more vague – apparently – is the detailed specs of that pro model.

I see no problem or inconsistency in that. And no reason to critisize Andrea either.

  2. I knew it! Nex-8 fullframe with nex-7’s control system and nex-6’s sensor/evf with app support. You should have told us ealier Andrea!!!

      1. as excited as everyone else… I question this marketing tho… The NEX-6 hasn’t even been announced yet… and there’s going to be ANOTHER NEX that might (or most likely) take the spotlight away from the 6 and 5R.

          1. LOL, I hope not. If it’s a full frame and I have to wait that long… I changed my entire line-up in anticipation of a FF NEX, always hate to deal with the crop factor.

      2. I expect many people will buy the 6 because the new camera will be twice the price, or more.

A flagship model helps sales of the lower models – most Nikon sales are of the lower models but the top models give prestige to the whole range.

    1. I have more lenses than I have time to use. A better sensor would interest me more, if the price is not too astronomical.

  3. on Steven huff blog, he said that we have a big surprise about NEX in Photokina. Maybe, it is this FF Nex, :D… Hope it’s available to buy soon. but if it is a FF, we have no Emount FF lens with that now. We need something like prime 35mm or 50mm lens with that camera, and of course Sony usually dont make us very happy like that……

  4. Ok, a new NEX-7? OR a PRO NEX? I don’t think it’s a FF because it wouldn’t make sense since Sony said that they have no plan for FF lenses and it would compete directly with the A99. So I’m guessing something above NEX-7 with higher shutter lifecycle, better EVF, better video, WiFi, Apps, touch controls, etc. If the NEX-7 body only is around 1200$, I guess that it can go as high as the XPRO1? But my guess would be between 1400~1500$. I’m still trying to understand that onld rumor about a hybird E-Mound and A-Mount, is that it?

    BUT… and that’s a big BUT…

Where are the lenses?! The new 35mm and the new zoom is not enough, we all know that. What good can be when we have more bodies than lenses?

People want fast primes and some pancakes if possible, Sony is investing so hard on Video, where are the OIS lenses? A portrait focal length lens, a decent Macro one, etc. I’m really struggling to not change system. I do have manual lenses, but I also want OIS for video and AF some other occasions.

As I want a decent video besides the photo, with no manual controls, I had to give up the new Fuji X-E1. There is still the GH3, the NEX-6 and this NEW NEX. What will it be?

      1. Let me guess.

If it is for the pro, then it must have the ff:

        – very fast AF with movement tracking
        – 12-15fps framerate with a deep buffer
        – weather sealed
        – standard flash mount
        – physical knobs for control
        – high rez EVF, high rez LCD that flips
        – hdmi out
        – mic in and audio out
        – AGC override, stereo audio
        – 24 or 36mp sensor size
        – wireless flash capability
        – video capable of 4K resolution(just a wish), otherwise
        – 1080-60p/24p/30p with 120 overcrank at 1080p and 240 at 720p.

Although I am open minded with what “PRO” means, I will however, defer to what Canon and Nikon considers a “pro” camera is based on their 1D/D1 series. If it is indeed a “PRO” camera, it will have to be 35FF sensor size. But being a NEX, it will have to accept aps-c sized E lenses that will crop automatically, unless:

        – They will also introduce at least 2 x 35FF lenses for it (e.g 35 f1.8, and/or 24-70 f2.8 OSS)

        – they will make a new adapter specific/optimized to the use of Alpha mount lenses.

Price will be in the U$2,500-3,200 range body only.

They will also have to release a new powerful wireless triggered flash.

        This is my guess. 🙂

        1. A professional camera has to work well with studio flash equipment, and has to have tethering.

A tilt and shift lens would be relevant too, for product photography.

Professional sports and news work demand very fast focussing and good quality at high ISO settings.

But “professional” covers many uses. For instance, an estate agent who takes photos of houses for sale is doing professional photography, but any good P&S camera will do all he needs.

For professional medical and scientific work, the 5N is already pretty good, but tethering would be useful.

        2. Although the Fuji is named as Pro, it is still APS C. So, what has the Fuji that other APS-C cams dont? enough for people to say that they can work with it.

There are more posts about people using the Fuji for weddings, travel and reportage photography than there are for people saying they are using a NEX 7. Many people have posted a million things about it.

It doesn’t have to be FF, just good enough.

          1. The Fuji X-pro is often rejected by pros (who prefer the Nex7) because of its mediocre electronics.

  5. “Game changer”. Sorry, but that’s become such an overused cliche that it means nothing anymore. A camera that can get up at 5 in the morning, get into the perfect spot, compose, shoot and get home again to wake me up for coffee is a game changer. The digital sensor was a game changer. You’re just talking bigger or faster or smaller or hybrid watnots.

    1. Best comment ever. There are so many extremely powerful cameras in
hand of people who carry them to the zoo to shoot elephants in hoorible
harsh sunlight, without a trace of photographic talent.

  6. The signs have been clear for a while now that the 7 is about to be replaced, so it not the biggest surprise in world history.

… Interesting how selective the leaking if on different models …

  7. If the price is below $2000, I’m In!

Been waiting for a perfect upgrade to my nex-5n

And, hell no I’m gonna sell it. It’s such an awesome camera, perhaps will become a backup camera.

This or a99 for sure 😀

  8. I bet on NEX compatible with alpha mount, or they will have to announce a line up of G lenses (to support the pro part) for E-mount

        1. My mind has imploded into its vast self, vibrating thru metaphysical realms of scalar energy – and has turned into a supernova.

As a result I’m useless for the rest of the day. (or at least until i’ll see some SR5 details)

  9. Well, it’s good to know Sony’s learned how to keep some surprises under its hat. Also, since they’ve worked so hard to keep this a secret one has to wonder how amazing it’ll be.

NEX-9 with a 36MP FF sensor that crops to 16MP?
    A 4k NEX video cam?
NEX with a Fuji lens mount so we can take advantage of their lenses? LOL.

    Can’t wait to hear more.

  10. I just got my NEX 7 with that ebay deal posted here few days ago!!!

I’m not selling my because it is a good deal

It’s about time to discontinue NEX 7 and split that into two different bodies, NEX 6 and Pro NEX

  11. If it is not FF and won’t have IBIS, then they don’t have the right to use the term “game changer”. IBIS is the main reason, I am contemplating to get the OM-D M5 and totally deciding to ignore the NEX7, N6 or 5R as an upgrade to my 5N. Cause none of them would get me better performance in lowlight. For daylight+legacy shooting, the 5N is all I need.

  12. Where’s the FF lenses? With focus peaking they’re everywhere! $40 at a pawn shop will get you a fast 50 and another $20 at Amazon will get you the adapter. I’ve been filling my collection with old lenses and not buying any more E-Mount beyond the one I have just in case the rumours are true.

  13. Andrea, does this mean Sony has kept this secret well to the point that your sources didn’t know about this until now?
Too bad I’ve had my NEX7 for a while, not thinking of changing soon, but am excited to hear the news! Good job sorting through the rumors.

  14. NEXes are getting lots of suprises recently. Happy for you. But… How about Zeiss for A-mount news or A99? it’s not a secret, while at the same time we still don’t have much info about new features nor any photos of it.

  15. Please be an oversized square sensor!

I would love Sony to more or less make a universal digital back that supports multiple aspect ratios and a fully articulated LCD screen for waist level shooting. And no AA filter please.

  16. Andrea, We are all intrigued as to what the mystery camera is, but is it’s a pro camera my guess is a FF Nex, if it is lets hope it has IBIS and a high MP sensor and doesn’t come with a stupid price tag. Steve Huff has already handled it and is hoping to get one shortly on loan from Sony USA. It will soon be Wednesday 🙂

  17. I have imagine only few things, which could be nice to have and are not already in the market.
Regarding functionality it would be control dial and button stuff (similar Fuji) IBIS, A77A99 LCD, A-mount lens AF with cheap adapter (without SLT).
Regarding sensor and IQ could be Foevon type sensor, or new tech sensor with RGBW which could give you amazing DR and high ISO performance.

  18. Modular Nex system I was imagining long ago? pretty please!
Imagine a body like on a medium format with removable sensor. You have a body with different bits you can add. I would sell a kidney for that

      1. Nah, Keep it E mount, much more flexible.
People complain about the lack of lenses but I count hundres and hundreds of lenses available for the Nex system. People should just learn how to shoot manual

  19. I think we would’ve heard something solid about a FF model by now if that was the case, not the “maybe some year” rumors. So my guess is that it will be the A-E-hybrid mount model that has a fast AF with high quality A mount lenses as well. APS-C only at this point of time I’m afraid.

The above is just a 100% guess based on different rumors over the months.

        1. We might only come to see a mock-up now … with only a few, vague specs. Sony did it like that with the A900 back in 2007, and they have done so continually over the last five years with mock-ups and very vague specs for future Alpha lenses.

  20. I almost ordered Sigma DP2M, then held it because of Fuji X-E1. Now, I’d like to wait and see this PRO NEX… It’s good there are so many excellent options. 🙂

  21. I’ve got it – game changer = body with no native lenses ! The world’s only camera that can’t take pictures. If anyone buys it, then we clearly have a game changer right ?

    1. There are hundreds if not thousands of FF lenses for this out already. Where have you been? You must be relying an “auto” lenses from Sony and are really missing out.

  22. wait what? Geez…what’s going oooon…! I decided myself on the NEX-6 and now this? Hope they announce a new lens roadmap as well. Read the Steve Huff article…This is really exciting..!

  23. I think i’m gonna be tired by SONY and with all this “upcoming nex” news !
This is enough !! we have hundreds of body and what ? hey guys “a new nex is coming” !!! wouah

don’t buy the nex 3F a new nex 5 is coming .. heeu .. don’t buy the new nex 5r because a nex 6 is coming … aoh no finally don’t buy the 6 because a mysterious nex is coming …”
the lifetime of a nex is only a few mounth ! I can’t believe how fast the nex 7 is dying ! this was suppose to be a high end camera with a “high end” life time as we usually see by nikon, fuji or canon…

The only thing i need is LENSES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. Yup, I’m surprised at how fast news about NEX 7 replacement and higher end body is coming. Maybe what Sony meant by game changer is they replace their higher end body as fast as their consumer lineup, by the time Nikon or Canon upgrades their high end camera, Sony would’ve upgraded their NEX camera by 2-3 generations! Hence THE GAMECHANGER! Rofl!

Seriously though, if the NEX 9 or 8 (why 8? I thought 7 is Sony 2nd highest end camera number?) is FF and has lenses the size and weight of a FF DSLR lens, then I totally fail to see the reasoning of moving to a mirrorless camera. I’m pretty sure many would agree WE WANT Leica sized lenses or Film SLR lens sizes?

      1. Seems a little unfair to bash Sony for making new innovations – all manufacturers do this: their high end cameras often lack new features until the next high end camera is due.
How long had liveview and video been around in low end bodies before they appeared in high end ones, for Canon, Nikon and Sony?
I know my A900 lacked both, and several years later we’re only just about to get an upgrade.
But my A900 still does exactly what it did when I bought it and takes superb photos – it still has a “high end” life time and I don’t want Sony to stop bringing out new features just so I can say it’s the best in every regard.

(and your NEX-7 was already bested by the NEX-5N in several areas when you bought it – the 5N has arguably better noise handling, much better corners with wide-angle primes, a touch screen which I find invaluable for zooming in the focus instantly and not only the option of the same EVF, but one that tilts too)

        1. Nah, the NEX 7 might have poorer noise performance then the 5n, but if I downres from 24 to 16, it’ll be comparable and I’ll have slightly more detail. NEX 7 has tri navi which is amazing for what it does, the function it gives to a small body is simply remarkable. And it has a superb grip which makes handling the big sized 18-200 silver super zoom pretty well. So no, I don’t consider the NEX 7 as inferior to the 5n, and I accept that technological upgrades will mean newer cheaper bodies will be better at certain stuffs.

Well I understand that newer body means newer features , better improvements cause this is how technology progresses, I however do have a problem with how fast they are rolling out the mid and high end body. These are not cheap camera bodies and to see Sony kept upgrading bodies year by year when there are clearly other issues like the no firmware update for the NEX7 when most of the fix can be addressed by a firmware update, lack of quality lens choices clearly makes you wonder how serious and committed Sony is.

Of course I’ll still be able to take great photographs with any cameras these days, outdated or not, but doesn’t it frustrates you to see a camera which you see has a minimum 2 years self life to be replaced as quick as a entry level camera? Just imagine how frustrating for the D800/D4/5D/1D/M9 users to see their camera get upgraded in less then 2 years?? My points is these are not cheap cameras, and the demand for a new replacement camera of this level is not as high as entry level camera, and that there are other issues that people would like to see to be fixed.

          1. 🙂 I didn’t say the NEX-5N was the better camera, just better in a few features: the NEX-7 blows it away in other areas.

And I’m clueless as to why Sony hasn’t provided firmware updates for the NEX-7, or indeed for my 5N – simply so I can disable that most annoying video button.
I’m never convinced that they understand the concept of a camera “system” and often seem more aimed at attracting new customers than keeping existing ones happy and loyal. Then again, firmware v4 on my A700 was an exception vastly improving noise in RAW and the NEX-5 gained all the focus peaking with a firmware update too; so maybe they’re just inconsistent.

But I don’t see the benefit of a long lifecycle on the high end cameras – that just means that you can’t upgrade for ages even if you want to.
With new models appearing rapidly, at least you can upgrade if you want to; but then maybe you also need to be self-controlled and skip a few generations before you do so 🙂

    1. Lol, if it comes with all or most medium format users use and at the price around d800, it’ll kill hassy, phase, mamiya and Leica.

Now THAT is a gamechanger. ROFL!

  24. good news indeed, but I really cannot understand where sony’s strategy on Nex system..
    In one month they release:

    – Sony Nex-5R
    – Sony Nex-6
    – Sony Nex-VG30
    – Sony Nex-VG900
    – Sony Nex-EA50
    – Sony Nex “PRO”

And this while having on the market:

    – Sony Nex-5N
    – Sony Nex-F3
    – Sony Nex-7
    – Sony Nex-VG20
    – Sony Nex-FS100
    – Sony Nex-FS700

I know many of these products have different markets, but a line of 12 different models seems a bit overcrowded to me, isn’t it?
Think of Panasonic GH2-3 : ideally it can cover all this range (with pros and cons) except FS700.
Why Sony continues to pop out new products?
Production costs increase, people are confused on what to buy, and as said many times, again we will have again less lenses than cameras.

      1. Which 18-200 😉

Sony has 3 18-200s in their lineup

        The original video optimized 18200
The photo and slightly inferior but smaller 18200
And the latest not sure to be sold seperately motorized zoom 18200

    1. Sony is SOOOO wrong. They think cameras are like TV’s. They want everybody to have a Sony camera, and that is enough for them, except that cameras ARE NOT TV’s. They forget a camera is a tool…not a toy nor a decorative thing for furnitures. But instead they keep releasing toy mirrorless cameras, crippled SLT cameras…and best of all, ZERO lenses! I’ve never seen such a poor strategy and wasted money and resources! They will crash the imaging division and will have to limit themselves to tiny-sensor sized Cybershots, if any.

ONLY good thing about Sony imaging division: the sensors. THE BEST SENSORS AND THE WORST CAMERAS. Please make only sensors.

    2. + 10
      Also available in cameras :
      Nex C3
      Nex F3
      Nex 5N
      Nex 7
      Upcoming
      Nex 5R
      Nex 6
      Nex pro

for (if you don’t count all the (4) 18-200 lens .. they are less e-mount lens available

      where is SONY going !

      and what about firmware
Nex 5 : was 5 different Firmware available
THE HIGH END NEX 7 : number of firmware update : 0 !!!!!
new camera bodies are coming so fast that they are replacing firmware !!

  25. Sonys strategy is to flood the body market until they flooded out all other manufacturers. Sony is going to be the only body manufacturer, all other companies can still compete to produce lenses for Sony. LOL

  26. I suspect the department producing bodies in fairly independent of the one producing lenses.
So whilst I also wish we had more lenses available, I don’t think that all the new bodies are slowing down the production of lenses.

And with numurous innovations in other mirrors cameras (now including Nikon and Canon), the pace is moving quickly – 6months and a model will have fallen behind unless you have a new one ready to keep up

  27. okay… SONY floods the market…and then?
first i have 100.000.000 bodies.. do not think
all are ready for residual waste, no so do they
want to make a sony-cam-bay ore waht?
they have their fat big 65er cam and down to fs700
till simple cybershots, they want to make fat volume of sales.
Do they react on my needs?
How long must we hear the stonage old marketing bla bla
    -entry-level-cam
    -mid-semi and so on

do sony think that i put my cam away every 3 mONTHS?
do they think people out their are not informed?
    nogo

so if ther is something in a body-range of 1400 dollars
    i want

    -global shutter
    -4:2:2 ( minimum)
    -10bit minimum
-all codec simultan ride out ( i do not care how they do it)
-relistic sensor with less pixi but more dynamic
    -think in fILM
    -think in PHOTO
so make a clear setup if to expensive build what can do
-is it so hard to bring in modular thinkin more parts
    an all in one timesegment?

is the film market in same but much slower timeshift like
    music-market?

    homerecording… a word in museum..

    and SONY is a MASS-BUILDER..
so will you loos me because in moment my alpha 57 makes it
    fine..hm?
same is with Canon / Nikon.

    nikon::

    -litte jv3
    – d 5300
    -d600

    ——————————
    canon::
    -litte xyc100
    – eos 90 twin digi 5
    – c 105
    —————————–

an so on.. please less piles for the dumping ground
and not all day long something that i think i am on
    the wrong planet…

    and a logical sensor-glasses thinking = PRICE

  28. I think it is Nex-7R or Nex-8. Nex-9 will be reserved for full-frame or may be not. Looking in to the camera body updates … c-3 to F3, Nex-5n to 5R so it must be remaining camera update ie, Nex-7R or Nex-8 with weather sealed video-easy body to compete with GH3?

  29. Wow…game changer…. aham…game changer….yes.

Folks, Sony is the most hyped brand i’ve ever seen. I still remember all the hyped rumors about a77 and the sad reality after it was released and reviewed! Come on, seriously: we all know how Nikon D600 and the cheap upcoming FF from Canon will kick A99’s ass badly.

    1. I know, king of banding, lowest DR and a whopping 3 or 4 fps, messed up Canon reds and greens thanks to their stellar CFA’s, no IBIS, lightning slow LV and video focus, awesomness. Looking forward to you hyping that some more. 😀

  30. IMO .. With Sony using the NEX platform as the ultimate hybrid. I mean with the popularity of using non-Sony lenses and the ease of use of focus peaking. MY idea of a game changer would have to be.

NEX camera with Modular mounts and autofocus of non-sony lenses (even if the autofocus performs like an outdated Alpha camera.

Or FF 36MP Sensor same as D800 tweaked for on-sensor phase detect autofocus, Dual Bionz processor, Inbody image stabilization, swap-able NEX and Alpha mount with native autofocus support.

Or Pro NEX with built in ND filters, Phase detect autofocus, 10FPS w/fulltime autofocus, 2 stop high ISO performance over Nex7. FS100 quality video in terms of rolling shutter or lack thereof. audio controls, tethering support and uncompressed HDMI output.

  31. Sony cameras won’t sell in huge numbers until they get a marketing department that know how to advertise them and get them onto high street shelves.

They have cameras that knock the crap out of similarly priced Canikons, but nobody has ever heard of them!

  32. Actually, I hope that not too pro, same specs as nex 7 with FF sensor, that’s it. I don’t want to spend more than 2k5 on that

  33. If it’s a FF which offers full video capability, with a viewfinder and good quality fast lenses, my Canon 5Dmkii and NEX-5n are history.

  34. Lets take a step back and think:

On September 12 ther will be

    Sony announcement: NEX

    Apple announcement: iPhone

    So the secret IS:

    the NEXt iPhone!

  35. – bullet proof body
    – weather sealed
    – Tri-Navi
    – AF/AE- Button
    – _fast and _reliable Autofocus, even in low light
    – high res EV without lags
    – usable ISO 6400
    – standard hot shoe
    – AS-Mode (Auto-ISO in manual _with EC)
    – no build in flash
    – touch screen, tiltable
    – at least 6fps, great buffer
    – snappy
    – 58/1.4 Zeiss

and i would buy two of them instantly.

      1. Maybe a In-body time machine utility is better , you can take a freezing picture even using 30sec. Shutter speed , no more high ISO needed , LOL

        1. When someone first explained raw to me thats actually what I thought it was. I thought it was something where if you left the shutter open to long u could tell it what time frames u actually wanted in the photo. It would be the greatest tool for capturing that precise moment! who needs fps when you can just take a frame out of a time selection in the raw file? =P

      1. Don’t worry about your existing hood. It is probably wrongly shaped anyway.

I have never seen a correctly shaped petal hood. They all have very sharp corners which are shaped to fit a “pyramid of light”. But the light rays which can hit the sensor actually form a volume which is more like a combination of a pyramid and a cone.

  36. Well it is only 4-5 days left.
Time will tell, we don’t need rumors about everything 🙂
I believe sometimes it is best to let Sony keep some secrets.

  37. NEX 9 comes to my mind

    – the first full frame camera that will change the whole industry forever
    – With the build-in phrase detection unit on sensor making the DSLR era fade out on the market!

  38. What of the a99? Will this camera even trump it? Will it include and adapter to use A mount lenses? Or could this new camera be the one with the hybrid mount???

  39. Another guess could be a 100% view coverage EVF. like the A77 or canon 7d OVF. I used to compare nex7 and a77 viewfinders… A77 is mindblowing and nex7 is not so comfortable.

      1. a77 and nex7 has the same OLED technology (that give clear white and dark blacks) and the same resolution. But the screen is bigger (or nearer) on the a77 and farther on the nex7.

The eye piece is also more confortable on the a77, the nex7 eye piece is narrow and can pop-up in the eye.

      2. While viewfinder display component is same viewfinder’s optics differ and not for the better in NEX-7.
Small size of optics causes lot smaller eye relief and image size unless you cram eye very close to it.

When I first tried them A77’s viewfinder gave “What a huge view!” impression and after that NEX-7’s viewfinder felt as completely mediocre.

    1. I doubt it will be that. Steve Huff would not get that excited over a camcorder. He seems to be all about cameras. It almost seems to be a FF/hybrid mount but this almost has the air of something top secret or a super surprise. We heard rumblings on this site regarding both FF and hybrid nex. The only true surprise would be it is coming much early than expected. It sounds like something we were not expecting. I knew I was going to get the 99 but may have to reconsider or it may be a two camera purchase. Whatever, it is Sony seems to be producing a buzz in the camera world for Photokina.

    1. I am thinking about the same thing. 36mp D800 sensor in a NEX body. Then again, the availability of E-mount FF lenses hinders it. Unless there is also a big announcement of lenses along with it. Come to think of it, it is quite possible. Carl Zeiss just announced that they will bring out a series of AF lenses for mirrorless systems. They can be for NEX, and they can be FF.

    2. Personally I’d rather see the new 24mp FF sensor over the 36, look at the DPreview comparison between the 5d3 and D800 noise levels. Especially since it seems the new Sony sensors will have the dual AF system.

    1. That’s right! If they suddenly announced a 3 or 6 Zeiss AF E-mount lenses, that would certainly be a “game changer”.

  40. Sony Cybershot DSC RX100
Friends of my and I have bought above compact. This is an excellent pocket-camera but the firmware contains a fatal error which should be repaired by SONY. Once you change to Clear Immage Zoom you can return to only optical zoom as long as Image Size is set at 20M without problem. As soon as you change Image Size to 10MB, the Clear Immage Zoom can no more be deaktivated. It remains unless you change to Image Size 20M.
I am disapointed and so are my friends.

  41. A FF Nex9 that can drive Nikon and Canon lenses with its sensor AF.
That would be “pro” and “game changing” 🙂
And mitigate a bit the lens absence…

  42. Admin,

Could you at least say if the controls are more like on fuji or more like on NEX-7?

My dream mirrorless camera would be:

    – full frame sensor
    – controls like X-Pro 1
    – many adapters for FF lenses
    – focus peaking
    – brilliant EVF (OVF would be too much hassle)

So more of a full frame platform for any lens, built like a tank, weather sealed.

  43. I think that Fuji and Sony are seriously taking the lead over Samsung NX, which seems to be now a dead system. Pity.

  44. So, people are ready to sell their NEX-7’s
If overall image quality is more important than anything else I would sell my NEX-7 or even a77 to replace it. Sony may not advertise it as such but I see the NEX-7 and a77 as first generation products or maybe version 1.1b. Stuff coming to market now will be much improved over the early 7-series releases.

I believe that this next NEX generation will signal the future direction of image capture, and this is not to say that the future is small as I think future A-Mount sized bodies will incorporate NEX architectures in a professional ergonomic full-featured system and If I’m correct the a99 will be the end of the professional body SLT camera.

Mirrorless is the future of pro cameras, I just question if Sony will be the camera maker to do.

    1. I assume that A99 will not be the end, it will eb the beginning of a new SL/SLT technology. Flip the SLT mirror out of the light pass and you have an EVIL in a DSLR body.

Great news than, because it has PDAF on sensor like all new Sony NEX and SLT will have in the future.

      :))

      1. I agree, sorry for my sloppy writing, as I should have said that the a99 could very well be the last high-end SLT as future designs will somehow no longer have the “T” in the SLT.

Maybe that is why Sony is using a99 and not something like a97 or even a88 for this release.

  45. I agree with Steve. Ok we are in Sony web site but we take a look to the incredible Fuji X Pro-1 or Olympus OMD. Or the pro Nex-7 too.
The Zeiss company will make some professional lens for mirrorless system, i think that reflex will be dead in the some years.
Yes, mirrorless with a 35mm sensor will be the future of professional (and not) photographers.

  46. New lenses will be a different mount, incompatable with any other mount: 11mm 12mm 13mm 14mm 15mm 16mm 17mm 18mm 19mm 20mm and 21mm. And if you use any lens of longer focal length the camera will brick permanently unrepairable. Because Sony’s photography advisors have told them that’s all anyone needs ever. Only need to take one photo in their lifetime because the lenses will cram everything in the world into the one photo. And all the lenses will be locked at one focus distance, which you have to choose when you buy them and never can be changed, who needs more than that. 🙂

And the label on the camera will be A99 so everybody will be happy with the perfect camera!

    1. Don’t follow these sites, Walt 🙂 News seem to disturb you, so remember to protect yourself and please go hug your old Minolta gear at least once per hour to maintain your full senses and sanity!

  47. Sony is too desperate to became rentable, and it think that the flooding the market is gonna work with the cameras. I don’t think so.

The Nex 5r, is for nothing desired as the Nex 5n was the last year, because they the Nex 6 is coming. The best mirrorless camera of the last year the Nex 7 was leaved in the oblivion, same apply to the a77, no great firmware yet, and now the attention to this cameras will gonna lower because the a99 and this new super Secret Nex appear in the scene.

Obviously Sony prefer to sell a new camera than fix and improve the already on the market cameras, this has been the problem of the Sony mentality. Apple became a great and rentable company (on Steve Jobs hands), because they respect the products they have created, and try for the day one to be a great product.

Always Sony announcements create great expectations, but fail to impress. And to win do you need to impress.

I’m a Sony follower, behind Apple for me Sony is the giant of the technology innovation. Just it look like some products are mere lucky hits.

    My two cents.

  48. I’ve never had a camera depreciate in value farther and faster than my NEX-7. I’d be lucky to get $800 for it now…a 33% drop in 6 months! I fully expected this, mind you, but it doesn’t make it any more fun. The 7 had so much potential, but Sony effectively abandoned it the second it was released and there are still precious few lenses that can do justice to the sensor.

  49. I think it will be a Full Frame Nex with completely new sensor technology. I remember some rumors about Sony sensors that can take HDR-Video. I don’t wanna know what dynamic range this sensor has compared to the actual models, but it it’s a game changer I expect it to be double! I can’t wait to see Sony boning Canikon right away in their asses!

  50. Interesting fact: Steve Huff has updated his ‘Photokina’ blog post, with the Sony announcements at least two times since it was published… When I read it yesterday evening (CET), he was bragging about his visit to Sony USA and that he saw something there that had not yet been leaked and that it was fantastic and that he really wanted to pre-order it as soon as possible. And that he was going to tell us all before Photokina. This morning when I visited his site again, it was already a lot more vague, talking about the fact that he was sure that Sony was going to release at Photokina, but no suggestion what it could be. But he still promised to give a report pre Photokina. Now (Saturday evening CET) it is even more vague… And no more promises that he will tell us before the official announcement. Just check his blog post and the comments (the oldes post reference his first version).
My guess: Sony really, REALLY wants to keep it a secret untill the last moment. And they told Steve Huff that he better checked the non-disclosure agreement (NDA) he (probably) signed. These kind of contracts have severe consequences (I know, I’ve already signed multiple). So Sony is REALLY, REALLY serious about this new thing. So Andrea: be carefull with what you publish… You are not under NDA, but others might be.
So signs are that it is something really significant…
But (on the light side): I hate waiting!!! I want to time travel! 😉

    1. Hi Eddy! I will be very careful. No need to create troubles a few days before the announcements. It’s alreayd good to knwo that a super ncie NEX camera is coming!

    2. Yes, I just saw the same thing. He must have gotten his pee pee spanked by Sony for touting he was going to get to see everything today!

His blog now says absolutely nothing about visiting Sony or anything.

    3. now there’s even less, but opening sentence is what’s quite interesting (he didn’t mention FF NEX before):

“We all know Sony is releasing new products at Photokina..with rumors of a FF NEX camera and NEX-6 floating around I wonder what they have in store?”

    4. Yes, yesterday Steve Huff tweeted that Sony just left his house, and he said “I left drool all over one of the items”.
…today I see that he deleted his tweet! 😮

  51. To me, a “game-changer” would be a sensor that has film-like characteristics and enables smaller lens designs.

A hybrid mount is a great step in the right direction, but it won’t cause the disintegration of Canikon.

An NEX-9 could bring Sony a successful product, but it won’t take down Canikon.

  52. It seems almost inevitable that it will have the same sensor as the A99. So support for the new A99 lenses seems likely, and weather seal.

Adaptors to use other lens mounts with AF and IS would be a bigger deal, but doesn’t seem possible (other than A mount).

  53. The revolutionary camera only can be a 100mp NEX. Remember Sony has patented a 100mp sensor. If it’s a “game changer” it has to be this 100mp sensor.

  54. Please please let this PRO NEX be FF. If that is the case then they should incl. the EA1 adapter at least, so that “pros” can utilize the FF sensor by using their G and Zeiss A-mount lenses.

Using legacy glass on a FF NEX is truly a dream.

Because of this camera this was going to be Sonys Photokina according to Steve Huff. We are talking about a show that will bring us Leica M10 and new stuff from Fuji. My expectations are already sky high!

  55. What game will it change?

    A mirrorless game changer…FF E mount with 1 or 2 included M mount adapters.

Each adapter can be customized to send specific information to the camera for the lens it will be attached to (say you have 3 lenses and have 3 adapters) for which the camera will already have the profiles it needs to avoid vignetting, colour casts and maybe distortion.

The camera will have downloadable profiles from every M mount Voigtlander, Zeiss and Leica M lens. This way, it will be even more complete than the M10 or M9.

To compliment this, it will have IBIS similar to that of Olympus, so it will easily cater not only to the low light crowd, but also to the video crowd.

For the video crowd, AVCHD 2.0 (that wont molest the A99 super video advantage) at less compressed frame rates and better video than Nikon D800.

That would be a game changer.

    1. I agree except that I doubt it will IBIS. The mount is big enough for a full-frame sensor but IBIS is stretching it plus that adds size and weight to the body. I think IBIS will be a distinguishing characteristic of the Alph A9X line. With a PDAF/CDAF hybrid full-frame mirrorless (ie 30% more light–remember NEX-7 vs A77?) the SLTs need a few features like IBIS and weather sealing to stand on their own.

I predict that the Full-frame NEX will have NO NEW LENSES. However, before everyone tries to crucify me, Zeiss IS announcing a line of ZM variants with auto-focus. I think Zeiss and Sony have been working on this for a long time and what we’re seeing is a digital Ikon in everything but name. I am excited. Not sure I will be able to afford it but excited…

      1. agree with zeiss cooking something together with sony, maybe demand for aps-c zeiss e mount lenses kick-started it. what i’d go for is some standard zoom AF FF lens as a walk around option and then I’d go for few adapters and old glass like contax g, minolta, nikon… for times when you really want to take good photographs and want to fully enjoy it.

        1. Hexx, I see the appeal but I certainly don’t think that will happen. Zeiss has a lot of ready-made ZM designs but (unless the pull something from the cine department) no zooms that will work at that registration distance. Plus, Sony won’t develop a FF NEX zoom (although I could be mistaken because of the VG-900 in which case the zoom with be 5-10X equivalent and massive). They are more likely to develop a LA-E3 adapter that uses the on-sensor PDAF of the new 24mp FF sensor but has a motor drive and support for all full-frame lenses. That way they can justify not announcing another line of lenses by directing users to their existing A-mount lenses.

Personally, I’m hoping its a FF NEX that’s comparable in size to the NEX-7 (if not in the same body) with an option to buy a AF Zeiss 35mm or 50mm f2.0 prime. THAT plus my legacy glass would keep me very happy. I’d have a small AF lens for walk-abouts and a great set of options for specialty work.

The bright side is the new adapter might even be included and/or cheaper than the LA-E2 which has the pellicle mirror and AF unit.

          1. was thinking about sony made zoom – cheap one and primes from zeiss specifically made for e mount

      2. I think the Zeiss variants will be for APS-C rather than FF because they already have the M mount lenses. I think they will see how it goes with those first and then they will develop the AF versions.

If anything, Sony will develop the AF lenses first though not at launch.

Properly priced ($100) memory chipped adapters will make any M mount lens combo a winner with a FF NEX.

Video, however, will then depend only on stabilized A lenses or crop mode E lenses. Anyways, to shoot high quality video you don’t need 24 or 36mp sensors anyways so buying the 35mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.8 along with any of the zooms will give any FF NEX owner a full working video cam with a full frame stills body.

Sounds like a good deal if they sell it for around £1500 (slightly more than X Pro 1)

        1. £1500 ??? – Fuji’s excellent prime lenses for the X-Pro cost around $600 in the US. That would be _far_ more than a “slight” difference.

The Sony-Zeiss 24mm 1.8 for the NEX, at around $1100, already seems way over priced in comparison to the Fuji lenses.

          1. The 24mm sonnar is expensive to you maybe because you haven’t used it. No zeiss lens is cheap and they are worth what they cost

      3. “I think Zeiss and Sony have been working on this for a long time and what we’re seeing is a digital Ikon in everything but name.”

        That’s a nice vision!

    1. No offense, but I disagree. I think the ZE 24mm “proved” that there is interest and the M mount lenses would need less work reconfiguring for AF then designing new lenses from the ground up. That said, either way if this camera is the FF Nex it should be an excellent alternative for mounting M-mount glass.

You could be right on the price although I think it will be at least $2000–don’t know if Sony does that 1:1 pounds-dollars conversion ALA Apple.

      1. If $2000, then around £1800 for the UK but 2000EUR.

I hope they think of competing with X Pro 1 and the marketing department doesnt smell platinum eggs when we need just gold.

  56. My dream specs for the NEX-9 (SONY please read)!!!

    1: 36mp FF sensor
2: E mount with A to E adaptor bundled with camera and has no translucent mirror but does have a motor.
3: High speed media ALL THE WAY: UHS-1, WiFi, USB 3.0
4: Contenporary styling (like the NEX-7 but more bad ass)
5: All Magnesium body with machined aluminum tri-navi dials and levers.
6: All dials have click stops instead of turning smoothly.
7: mind blowing 5mp OLED view finder
8: Apples retina display for the rear screen

I could go on for days, if sony made this camera I would buy it (I will probably buy it anyway regardless of the dream features) and I would only wear clothing and accessories that have a “Sony” logo on them for the rest of my life.

  57. For me maybe the surprise will be a medium format camera like Hasselblad H4D with 60MB or 100MB and with 2K or 4K video capability. 🙂

      1. I would agree but read my other comments I think Sony is announcing this specifically BECAUSE Zeiss is now in the mirrorless game on their own terms. I imagine Zeiss has agreed to have AF ZM style primes ready the day the FF NEX ships.

Now if the VG-900 rumors is correct I think it is possible that Sony has a 28-140 or 28-300 zoom in the works but I doubt it. I think the real idea behind the FF Nex is that you use crop frame NEX lenses or FF A-mount lenses with a updated LAE adapter.

This is that hybrid that’s been rumored for months now. No need for new lenses, in Sony’s mind its a camera that will actually use every lens they already make.

  58. A square FF sensor. With a lot of pixel, so when you crop horizontally or vertically you still have plenty of them.

This square sensor will have a diagonal of ~43mm (same as 24x36mm diagonal) so you can use existing 24x36mm lenses esp sony A and Leica with an adapter, and of course the new Zeiss autofocus lenses that Zeiss advertises on its blog. (and also nex lenses with a crop mode, but that’s not the main point). 30×30 or 31x31mm sensor.

The new Nex pro system will be advertised as a medium format system in the body of a little mirrorless camera with little high quality lenses (leica M and new zeiss AF).

    A game changer !

Just my 2c, but I think it really makes sense. At a reasonable price, I would buy one, and keep one of my nex 3 or c3 as a backup camera.
My voigtlander Heliar 15mm tells me that he would love to marry a 31x31mm sensor, but my old Zeiss for Contax lenses and my very old Zeiss for rangefinder contax won’t let him be the only one !

  59. Plus, the square FF sensor as five advantages on its competitors :
    1. it does not compete frontally against the Leica M9 or M10
    2. It’s in vogue (is it english ? I’m french, not sure) Hipstamatic, instagram and other smartphones apps are square.
    3. you don’t have to rotate your camera ever. I love portrait orientation but I hate rotating my camera, not you ?
    4. It’s medium format-like, so people read : PRO
    5. it has never been done before in 31x31mm so it’s original and it defines a new segment. No camera can compare. Other brands may follow.

  60. Would it be a 28mm x 28mm square sensor ?

    28×15.75(16:9) for 4K Video, 4096 x 2304 pixels

    28 x 18.67 (3:2) or 28 x 18.67 (2:3), 5384×3590 (5.2um pixel pitch) approx 19.3M for APS-H Still images

In APS-C cropped mode, 23.5×15.6, 4500×3000 approx 13.5M – just about the right size for most applications

  61. Sold my Alpha 850 as it had no live view. Sold my NEX 7 as the focal length of my primes and the crop didn’t match. And the camera was really hard to use with cold fingers and tiny buttons. Though I loved the EVF and the sensor. Now I have a 5DMKIII. The colors are much worse than Sony’s and the dynamic rang is limited. Pushing will always deliver noisy darks. See Lloyd Chambers on that. I would trade the 5DMKIII immediately for Pro FF NEX.

  62. Is it just me or did Steve Huff changed the wording in his blog post to not refer to the ‘new’ product? (RX1)
I thought he mentioned about the new product he’s interested in and is not leaked yet – but now I don’t see any wordings like that from his post.
Did he just happily cut it out?

  63. Wow that was odd. I just wrote an really long
comment but after I clicked submit my comment didn’t appear. Grrrr… well I’m not writing all
that over again. Regardless, just wanted to say wonderful blog!
