(SR5) New 35mm f/1.8 lens for NEX coming!!!

The new Sony 35mm f/1.8 lens is as big (or as small) as the 30mm Sigma lens you see here on top.

Super trusted sources just shared a next good news! A new 35mm f/1.8 lens for NEX will be announced along the new NEX-5R and NEX-6 cameras in September! And as I told you before of course along the 16-50mm and 11-18 pancake(!) lenses. I have been told that this lens has the size of the current Sigma 30mm f/2.8 lens…yes same size but it is faster! And it’s a lot smaller than the current [shoplink 8448]50mm f/1.8 tele lens[/shoplink]. I have no info about the price but this could be the ONE single lens ideal for 90% of the daily photography use. After all the most famous photographers used the standard 50mm focal length for their best stories.

      1. Exciting news, I also hope it will have OSS.
People say it doesn’t matter at these focal lengths but I disagree.
One of the key purposes of a bright lens is to be able to shoot in low-light.
A f1.8 with shutter speed 1/50 will give the same result as a f3.6 with OSS at 1/12.5. This off course ignores the possibility of subject-movement.

      2. “After all the most famous photographers used the standard 50mm focal length for their best stories.”

        Andreas,

        Didn’t you mean 30 mm ?

      3. umm 35 nor 30 is standard for aps-c. The hypo of the sensor (or film format) is what defines the NORMAL length.

          1. Its true in fact. Not theory. Many 50mm lens where and in some cases are still 43mm just labeled

      4. It should be good enough even so.

I answered yes and I’m not even a NEX user. When I see what this lens is like I will likely buy into the system. It would be premature to say the system is maturing, but it does seem to be reaching a basic minimum at long last.

      1. @Booe.
For AF the more light the better. So AF would be better off with an F1.4 lens than an F1.8 lens.

        1. Doesn’t matter at all (faster aperture doesn’t mean faster focus), but the heavier glass groups means a speed penalty. You can’t argue with physics.

          1. Yup can’t argue with physics. Torque is all that matters and that is controlled via gearing in the motor so you have no clue what would be faster or not until its made.

          2. f/1.8 or f/1.4, I don’t care. If it isn’t as sharp or sharper at f/2.8 than the Sigma 30, then what’s the point (assuming this lens doesn’t have OSS. If it does, then it’s a win-win) other than getting a “true” 50mm equiv? The $200 Sigma is still a super value.

This lens has a lot to live up to. Looking forward to it. 🙂

    1. Lets hope that it isn’t a Zeiss or f1.4. NEX users need a cheap lens to counter the 20mm f1.7 on m43 and the 30mm f2 on the NX system.

If this lens is priced around $299 or so it will sell like hot cakes. Considering Sony has a Alpha mount 35mm f1.8 for just $199 and performs superbly (matches my CZ 24-70mm easily in sharpness and has better bokeh to boot).

If its got a Zeiss designation and has a f1.4 aperture then for sure it will cost $1000+ and be available for only a few.

        1. ^^ Have you used the Alpha mount 35mm f1.8 ? Optically its every bit as good as my Carl Zeiss 24-70mm f2.8 but with better bokeh.

The CZ 24-70mm costs a cool $1800 or whereabouts while the Sony 35mm f1.8 costs a far more palatable $199.

There already exists a CZ 24mm f1.8. However an inexpensive good quality lens in the 24 – 36mm range is lacking.

The Panasonic 20mm f1.7 is a bread and butter lens on the m43 system. The Samsung 30mm f2 is similarly an inexpensive bread and butter lens on the NX system. Both these lenses are around $350/$400.

So the NEX system also needs a similar lens.

In the m43 system people wanting something better than the 20mm f1.7 have an option of the 25mm f1.4. However sales wise the 20mm f1.7 far far exceeds the sales of the 25mm f1.4. Sony needs sales now more than ever considering even Canon has entered the mirrorless segment.

So an inexpensive fast prime with a close to normal FOV is just what the doctor ordered.

      1. 35mm is actualy 52mm on crop and still need stabilization. Without OSS it will be less interesting even if it smaller then 50/1.8 OSS.

        1. I’m aware of the crop factor. On a 35mm on APS-C, you only need 1/50 or 1/60 sec for lack of stabilisation to not be a problem. OSS is all very well at much lower speeds, but it can’t compensate for subject movement.

Do I wish that it will have OSS? Yes, but if it doesn’t, it’s not a deal-breaker.

My NEX-5/LA-EA2/35mm SAM combo has shown me it is perfectly easy to cope without stabilisation. Same combo with 85mm SAM – now that IS a pain in the arse.

          1. Yes I know that OSS can’t compensate object movements. OSS is for bad hands compensation, like mine and they need it. Yes it can be the deal breaker. Not for everybody but for me yes.

      2. Stabilization IS a big must! A new Sony NEX lens without OSS makes no sense. I have both Sony SEL 50mm and Sigma DN 30mm and the Sigma’s lack of stabilization makes me miss some pictures at hard light conditions. BTW, why not a NEX with IBIS?

      1. As long as you don’t need telephoto, 35mm eq. (moderate WA) and 50mm eq (standard FL) are actually perfect to travel with IMHO What’s so weird about that?

        1. I think you have forgotten that the 35 will be a 52mm eq and the 50 is a 75mm eq. If I was going to travel with only primes I’d want a least a 28 eq. And actually, for travel I’d want a 16-80 plus the 24 f/1.8.

          1. Dear Lotus I was refering to the Zeiss, that’s why I wrote 35mm eq. (moderate WA)in the message above this. Maybe you jumped over it?

          2. Of course I didn’t add it later. It’s just that you and Stevey have to read more carefully, before replying.

    1. hmmm. using 24 and 35mm togeter sound like a really stupid idea :>

you know, that you can just walk a step closer with a 24mm so you get the 35mm FOV? or that you can back just one step away with a 35mm lens to get the 24mm FOV? why ffs would you even carry two such similar FLs?

      1. I don’t think that moving with your steps can emulate the view of a 35mm lens. Otherwise we all would just use a 50mm lens and move around like bees.

      2. +1 pablo

as long as you put in the effort to walk back and forth, you can save money from buying so many different lenses. it is ALL just marketing for lazy bums who like zoom

        1. The proper distance from the object is part of image composition. Depending on what you’re up to achieve, there is only *one* correct distance.

        2. Obviously, Jon – I’m surprised all pros don’t just stick with a 24mm.

My wife loves it when I take photos of her with my Sigma 10-20mm. It really emphasises her nose. I don’t need any other lens – I just move closer.

          ROFL.

        3. +1 emopunk – if zooms didnt exist my first 3 lenses would be 24mm eq, 35mm eq and 50mm eq….i’m not a big telephoto fan and with those 3 you have important bases covered

      3. You cannot match the FoV of two different focal length lenses for distant subjects by taking a few steps closer. Indeed if the subject is a landscape with great depth it’s utterly impossible. That only works at a single subject distance, and then only where the subject does not have significant depth relative to that distance. If your subject is a person filling a larger proportion of the frame the image will be very different when taken on a 24mm vs a 35mm lens on an APS-C sensor, even if you adjust your distance to suite. With the 24mm lens features which are closer to the lens will appear more prominent and occupy a wider angle than the with the 35mm. It’s called perspective and the reason why there are considered to be “classic” focal lengths of certain types of subjects (so 85mm on FF or 60mm on APS-C are generally considered to give a flattering – or flattening – perspective for faces).

So if you confine your subjects to flat, 2D ones like paintings, then you can, largely compensate by moving closer with the shorter focal length. But this notion that people seem to have in their head that the only purpose of a longer focal length is to save walking a bit closer is sheer nonsense.

  1. If it has OSS and pricing wise cheaper than SEL50F18, i definitely go for it! Can’t wait for the good news

    1. I can’t believe you want a cheaper lens than 250gbp. That’s more or less the limit for 1.8 and crap lens.

    2. There is no way it will be cheaper than the 50mm 1.8 OSS, with or without stabilization. At least not if Sony is building it up to its standards.

  2. OSS would be nice.

I will have a NEX again if we get this and an 85mm (coming early 2013?) and have more than just NEX-7 with EVF (Yes 5n and F3 can take add-on but cost of 5n + EVF = near enough to 7).

    1. I would like a 90 mm f2.8 lens. Been wanting to buy a contax 90mm, but if Sony made one that would be awesome. 90 makes more sense than 85 for aps-c

        1. Although it is entirely plausible for them to release a 90mm based on a rebadged Tamron 90mm Macro?

But my guess is it will be based on the much smaller/cheaper Easy Choice 85mm f2.8

  3. f/1.8 is too little

:< and if it draws the same, uninspiring style as the 50/1.8, with that sterile, boring and digitally looking output… it will be another gravestone to magical ethereal photos, minolta, zeiss, VC or any other manufacturer were producing.

Who shot with a Nokton 35/1.2 or 25/095, knows what I'm talking about. Colors and bokeh from a totally different league compared to that plexiglass optics look…. Yes, I have the oss 50/1.8, however if it didn't have OSS, I wouldn't ever buy or use it. Why can't SONY produce something with magic in it like Voigtlander does or even the FUJI 35/2 can do…?

    1. Boom, this is what I am saying. It better perform in the league of the Nokton I have (1.2 version II) or otherwise I won’t sell…even if it has OSS. Yes, the 50mm is good, but it isn’t as good as it could be if it was made by Zeiss, or to a G standard.

We need better performance in the edges and corners and honestly, the NEX 7 sensor demands it.

      SHIT!!

  4. @Pablo: Stop whining and start practicing. You worry too much about lenses. “Magic” happens in your brain.

  5. Sounds great, can’t wait 🙂

I do own the 30mm sigma already, but will consider he 35mm for it’s speed if the reviews are good – especially if it has oss too.

  6. http://www.pavolsebo.com

    think I practice to little?

SONY should stop producing unispiring crap lenses for the NEX line.
NEX really is not the go-to solution for P&S upgraders as they thought it will be. A huge amount of enthusiast photographers is using it. Enthusiasts don’t want that digital, sterile, plexiglass f1.8 look. But what is SONY doing..? Producing low level optics for the best APSc sensors around… Quite antagonistic, don’t you think?

    1. Pablo: You judge the performance on the new Sony lens based on.. the look of sigmas lens? That it is 1.8 over 1.2? – that you can thank the pancake-missionaries for. (which incidently is the same that also wants fast lenses, but can’t realize it is either one or the other)

    2. Come on Pablo, you’re not speaking for all “enthusiasts” blaming a “digital, sterile, plexiglass f1.8 look” of Sony’s E-Mount lenses.

All of Sony’s E-Mount lenses produce decent and quite realistic images. Yes, there’s nothing really special about it like e.g. the famous Zeiss-3D-Look or the 60’s style of Canon FDs, but if you’re into something special you’re free to attach whatever you like or create this in post production. Personally I think Sony’s doing fine, focussing on neutral images instead of “magic”.

With a high quality 16-50mm standard zoom, an 11-18mm wide angle zoom and a fast 35mm f/1.8 Sony’s NEX lens range sounds pretty complete to me – probably even for the higher NEX-7 resolution challenging the first generation lenses quite a little too much.

      1. No, I agree with Pablo. Fuji has a fantastic 35mm (albeit falls short in the edges) but it is a 1.4, delivers and its size isn’t pacake (it’s larger than the sigma pictured).

If Fuji could have made it smaller without loosing the optical performance, I think they would have. They didn’t. If Zeiss could have made the Sonnar 24mm smaller without loosing more IQ, they would have, but they can’t. There is a compromise.

I don’t mind 1.8, but I do mind if it’s a shit 1.8 that needs to be stopped down to 2.8 or 4 to get it as good as the already good sigma 30mm that starts at 2.8 already pretty well.

        1. Well, even a ok 1.8 but great at 2.8 would be fine for me. I only occasionally need the 1.8 for low light stuff. I can probably live with it being a little soft for those occasions.

    3. Yep, you do Pablo, worthy but rather dull, better than anything I can do, but I do not claim to be a good photographer.

  7. Nice, I hope this and the ultrawide are indeed true. Wouldn’t mind carrying a NEX-7 with these two lenses instead of the A77/16-50 combo on hikes. Add a compact portrait lens (2-2.8/85), maybe a 60mm macro lens and I’m set. Don’t think I’d want anything longer on a compact body.

  8. I want this lens! Luckily I have not bought a Sigma 30mm yet! I will hold that off and wait for this to come out and see how they square up. I’m still looking forward to getting the Sigma 19mm though…. 28mm equivalent is pretty decent wide angle lens for me to use daily…..

  9. Just bought the Sigma 30mm, but i think i’ll send it back to Amazon and wait for this. The Sigma is pretty good, but i bought it because it’s the only affordable option right now. I’d like something faster. If it’s anything like the Sony 50mm 1.8, it’s going to be excellent!

  10. Shit. I am worried now. There is always a compromise on the edges and corners with small lenses. Fuji’s 35mm, albritbshar in the central area, its sad in the borders and corners. See slr gear for info.

I eas expecting something that will truly be edge to edge sharpness even if it was the size of the zeiss lens.

    Disappointment

      1. I am trying to compare this to a Nokton 1.2, or the Zeiss 50mm 1.4, or the Canon or Nikon 50mm 1.4 for full frame. Can’t you see people? If we all think 50’s, they should be good lenses without much effort.

I don’t know why people put this in perspective of other NEX lenses instead of putting the perspective of systems as a whole. Sony banged a home run with the Zeiss 24mm not because it is 36mm equivalent, but because besides being a fast lens (it could have even been an f2) it is also a quality lens that puts quality before anything else (size, for example)

So, when a 35mm 1.8 for E mount comes, the main thing being promoted here is the size of it. So it is for the shit 16mm. ‘It’s a small lens’ the ballerinas shout. NEX already has professional quality images coming out of it (see Robert Cicala resolution test for NEX 7 which equals -with a Zeiss 24mm to begin with- that of 5D MK II or III) so it needs lenses to say: “Fuck SLR, I am small and I can do the same…check out this set of Lenses I got as my homies right next to me…they rock too”

But no, small is first and quality can be second. If the 50mm OSS could have been 2mm longer, but better edges and corners, I would have happily paid £50 more for it.

It’s about trickling down…pro to consumer…which cements a brand’s strength in the image making business. Does Nikon go from down to up? or Canon? Is Fuji doing the same? selling lenses that go for size before quality? No, they are not, because they know that the enthusiast will buy (even if they bitch about the price) and be happy with the quality of photos he/she is getting. If not because of the excellent video, I would sell my NEX 7 5n and 5 lenses (zeiss 24, sony 50, sigma 19, nokton 35 1.2 and 15mm) to Fuji.

They got me by the balls and are about to spit on my face unless this 35mm delivers.

Please, at least tell me that the two zooms are going to be constant aperture.

        1. Aren’t the two zooms pancakes? If so your balls are toast.

They might accidentally release a pro zoom later.

      2. In theory, 35 mm for A-mount, being retrofocus, should have more uniform sharpness across the field than E-mount 35 mm

  11. Pablo; why don’t you get a Novoflex adapter and som Leica glass? 🙂 Only thing is that a 35 Summicron (which is f/2) is $3200 🙂

  12. good news: it’s 35 mm
    bad news: it’s 35 mm
I was hoping for something in 28-32 mm range.
‘Cause 35 mm would be larger (and ppl compaining nex lenses are big) compared to samsung 30/2 or panasonic 20/1.7
Probably it’s because sony already has 24 mm and 30 mm lenses.
    35/1.8 slightly too long
    30/3.5 too wide… 🙁
anyways i consider to get 35/1.8 asap

  13. Why would I want this lens? I already can buy the Sigma 2.8/30 – which is excellent.
I wish, Sony would rather give us high-quality standard and tele zooms. I bought the current zooms and they are an absolute disappointment – in particular in terms of corner sharpness.

    1. “Why would I want this lens? I already can buy the Sigma 2.8/30”

How about the 1 1/3 stops of light? The Sigma might be an OK lens, but it is pretty slow for a prime.

    2. And yet a lot of people are getting good work done on the supposedly disappointing Sony NEX zooms. A 35mm f1.8 is a nice lens to have, quite a bit faster than the Sigma. If it’s the same quality as the Alpha 35mm f1.8, there would really be no reason to complain about this lens.

  14. aiks.. announce in september but will it even available in the same month…. I have a trip in October and was thinking to get the cz 24mm for the trip. But personally i prefer 35mm fl, and I can cut cost from buying the CZ and get the 35mm + 50mm perhaps. 🙁 cant wait for it..

Admin (Andrea?), may i know is the 11-18mm = SR5 too? This will stop me from getting the UWA adapter on 16mm.

  15. If the NEW 35 1.8 lacks OSS , I will buy sigma 30 2.8.

So I hope It has OSS .

Like 24 2.8 IS USM of CANON for 5DM3 ,
35 1.8 OSS will be best partner of NEX-5R.

      1. @bas076.
The big handgrip and EVF means you can hand-hold it at 1/30 sec.
With the EVF, your head becomes the “third hand” to significantly stabilise the shot. That is one more reason why NEX-6 is good news.

          1. 1/13 sec is so long that movements of the subject becomes problematic.
If there are any humans, animals, vehicles, moving fauna from wind etc. then you will get blur from that. I normally dont go below 1/30 for shooting people, and even then many shots have subject movement blur.
For architecture, maybe yes, but only if there are no people in the view, or if you want the effect of blur.

  16. i think its a big mistake if this lens doesnt bring OSS, for still’s its not a problem, but for video its crucial, specially hand held…

      1. and if i want to shot in lowlight? and if i want a shalow DOF? and what about the image quality of a prime over a zoom? yep, a kit zoom is all you need to shoot video… why bother with good lenses

  17. If I were using primes (and I’m more a zoom guy) I’d much rather have something equivalent to the classic 35 and 90 pair – something around a 22 or 24 and 60 or 65. Doesn’t have to be super fast, around 1.8 is plenty, but does need to be excellent quality, reasonably compact and more or less affordable. Then add a equivs for 20/21 and 180/200, say a 14 and a 120 or 135. That would be a very close match to what I and my professional friends used back in the film days. Most of us in newspaper carried a 20/21, something in the 85 to 105 range, and a 180 or 200 (depending on what brand we used).

Having said that, what I would buy is an equivalent to the Canon 24-105 (or Nikon 24-120) — a 16 to 70 or 80 around f4.

  18. I have the zeiss 24 and the sel 50 oss and i will buy this lens as well. It will take alot of “weight” of the zeiss schoulders… i will be using it for outdoor filming probably

  19. IF IT HAS OSS I AM BUYING ONE NO MATTER HOW MUCH IT COSTS!!! HELL ILL EVEN PREORDER IT. COME ON SONY.

  20. Hi, I was hoping for a 28mm-30mm prime, 35mm (52.5mm FF equiv)a bit tight for me. Right now I ‘ll keep my Sigma 30mm.

  21. Hi Guys,
My favorite A-mount primes are 24 2.8 and 50 1.7 – excellent optical quality in a small enough package. Unfortunately Sony decided not to re-issue the 24mm one with a SSM, along with a few other key primes. If it did I would still be a Sony A-mount user and be in the market for a new FF A99 come this Fall. But unfortunately (for Sony) I made a decision to switch to Canon which fits my needs better.
If anyone is interested in a picking up very clean and nice versions of those lenses (along with a few others), I just listed them on the auction site under dvpnyc. I hope they find a nice new home and serve a new owner well like they did for me.
    Jim

  22. Oh no.. hope this is not true. Cause if it is, what am I going to do with my m43 system? I already investing so much money for this small sensor camera with good selection of lenses. I realized the quality has never been on par with nex, but its selection of lenses have blinded me

    :p

  23. If it’s OSS, I’ll be getting one. If not, I may just have to make due with my alpha mount 35mm 1.8 sony instead. (sure focusing is really slow, but manual is an option)

  24. I hope it comes out soon and isn’t delayed forever like the 50mm. I remember that was supposed to come out in Oct/Nov last year and it ended up being March/April before first orders were shipped.

        1. Sony’s lenses are actually manufactured on Mars (little green men have a low-wage economy) and come here by way of rockets with ionic thrusters. That’s why the lenses are so slow to be released.

It’s an open secret in the industry.

    1. BJ, you know that Sony in the meantime got its entire camera production facilities flooded away, don’t you?
      .

  25. When the 50mm lenses ceased to be supplied with every film SLR they quickly lost out to other focal lengths and most people did not have one in their kit anymore. It’s really antique thinking that one should shoot only one mid range focal length. Mighty limiting of photography. Folks should really catch up to the modern world a bit. I doubt that 35mm would reverse modern photography.

    1. Your trolling here is a bit tedious.
First you complain Sony NEX is for soccer moms. Then you complain 35 mm is too limiting…
BTW, not too limiting 18-200 was available from 2010…

  26. Hmm. I was just about to pull the trigger on that 30mm Sigma, albeit irritated at unstabilized f2.8. Ever the optimist, I’m hoping for OSS & edge-to-edge sharpness on this Sony 35/18. Would be a good general purpose lens for group & indoor shots, especially when I want to use a tripod or hand the camera to someone who can’t work a manual lens. For landscapes I’ll be sticking with my incredibly-sharp (& compact!) Minolta MD 24/2.8… I’m not enough of an optimist to expect any Sony-made lens to out-resolve that beauty.

  27. Finally! I would preffered a 30mm/1.8, but this is also good. I don’t care about OSS (it’s for rookies anyway), better be cheap. At $199 it would be a hot seller, like the Nikon 35/1.8.

  28. Any NEX prime launch by Sony is a good thing no matter how anyone looks at it! Now there will be a total of 4 primes! Everyone should be super happy about this…but of coarse….since its not like 32mm instead its too long…LMFAO.

    *sighs*

  29. Oh no.. Not another 1000 USD lens that doesn’t har IS.. We rarely see 35mm with IS.. And with f1.8.. It means more expensive than th 50mm probably in the range between 700 and 1000 !!.

    1. There’s no way this lens will be priced at that level! Where did you get that from? You do realise the A-mount 35/1.8 is very cheap – similar to the A-mount 50/1.8. Unless the e-mount 35/1.8 is a Zeiss or G, it will be cheaper than the e-mount 50/1.8 OSS.

      1. Dude, I doubt cheaper…but around that range for sure. However, I would pay an extra 100 or 150 for it if it delivered like a champ (ala Zeiss 24mm)

        1. I think it will be cheaper only if it lacks OSS, which it may well do. If it has OSS then I’d expect a similar price to the 50mm, or slightly more, bearing in mind the pricing of the A-mount versions.

  30. I’ve been happy with my sigma 2.8

Not the greatest lens but nice sharp images for $200. I’m sure this lens will also be priced in a similar fashion. I’m pretty sure the people at Sigma have no intentions on going up against the $1000 Zeiss

  31. Most likely low contrast wide open like it’s alpha mount counterpart. Move along. Nothing great to see here

  32. Guys: this is the lens you were waiting for. Small, fast, normal prime. It won’t be OSS, if the dimensions are as indicated. You know that, but you will keep bitching. Ask for pancakes, f/0.70, cheap and OSS to boot. From the moment this lens is announced, you will start the next torture cycle, waiting for the lenses of 2014. Have fun!

  33. Sorry if it’s been discussed already, but this seems like a re-vamped Alpha SAM 35/1.8 for e-mount. Which is a Good Thing! But why did it take them so long to do this? Is it a very big deal to jerry-rig an Alpha lens for e-mount?

  34. yes! this will be truly the lens to carry 90% of the time. i hope it will be in par price with that sigma.
i have a 35mm f/1.7 lens, only MF though and i use it a lot. thanks to the NEX’s peeking + MF Assist. best yet, super cheap on ebay. yes, im talking about the SLRMagic but hey, dig around ebay and you’ll find some sellers sell it for around $35. 😉 so for you guys who can’t wait or don’t have much dough, i highly recommend that lens. google for reviews. it’s a great cheap lens.
