(SR3) Some delay on the Alpha Lens roadmap?

[shoplink 11712 ebay][/shoplink]

Image on top: The current [shoplink 11712 ebay]70-200mm f/2.8 lens[/shoplink].

A trusted source just told me that four of the new Alpha Mount lenses, the 70-200, 70-400 and 300 2.8 and the 50mm have not been confirmed for a Photokina release. And that it is very likely that these will be available later in Q4 2012 or Q1 2013. I don’t know yet if Sony will decide to show these lenses on an eventual new Alpha Lens roadmap or as prototype.

I hope other trusted soruces can read this and confirm me the delay in these four lens release. Thanks!

      1. We have one for aps-c – 16-80ZA is 24-120 equivalent and it’s sharper than the Nikkor. Obviously no use if you’re on FF…

        1. I’m pretty aware that there is a 24-120mm EQUIVALENT for APSC-C which is the 16-80mm (which I’d owned).
What I’m saying is that a 24-120mm (the 16-80mm equiv. for FF) would be even useful for APS-C shooters as a 36mm-180mm.

But my question is: why only Nikon makes one?

  1. Hopefully they have realised that a high priority is to work on decent NEX lenses. THere are already quite a few SAL lenses…

    1. @davidevil…Do you actually listen to the words that come out of your “brain?”

Wow… That must mean canon isn’t in the business any more either since they have delayed stuff, too. Oh wait! There are no more businesses globally because every company has had a delay.

Take your medication and relax, please,… No go back to the Nikon forum where you belong

    2. David, All Sony indications and behaviors to support your position. Thank You.

Too many Kids here are drinking the Sony KoolAid

  2. What is the big deal…there are more then good enough lenses right now in the line up for Alpha. Indeed I see no reason to add Alpha lenses at all.

May be just add stepping AF motors to the Zeiss lenses 24-70, 85, 135 as to allow them quick contrast AF and super precise AF in principle.

NEX land is where lens are needed NOW.

      1. I do not mean SSM but new motors as found in the latest Canon lenses. These tend to produce more accurate results.

Alpha cameras & lenses are very bad in focusing …now that I shoot NEX-7 my A700 seems like naive attempt at camera making from last century

  3. bad news 🙁

I want to buy the 70-200 but i will not buy the old one if i know there will be a new version of it

    1. don’t forget the increasing price of the 70-200 “2”…

the old one will remain as good as it is now… 😉

      1. However the used prices will drop and stock of the “old” version will get sold off cheaper.

I am with hannes77, there is no way I am going to drop money on a new 70-400 when it’s getting replaced in six months.

        1. Good lenses will always be good lenses. If you need one now, there is really nothing bettern than the 70-400G. It’s a remarkable lens. If it can be improved, then even better.

          1. I look at it this way. If I needed one now, it would depend on how long I anticipate my initial use will be. I don’t think the price will drop that much (on the used 70-400G). So it may be economically feasible to buy and sell, so to speak.

    1. Totally agree. With Sony, everything is after Nikon+Canon, late or delayed. Sony users will again suck the proverbial hind tit. Andrea should have a side-bar voting tool that lets users constantly vote how long delays will be for each camera or lens.

    2. You know that there was no official word from Sony about these, right? This means that officially nothing is delayed. Rumours previously indicated that the lenses will be released on Photokina but now they indicate later release. That’s all.

There’s no “delay” as nothing was promised, there wasn’t even a single word from Sony about any new A-mount lenses coming on Photokina.

      1. Congratulations, the first post which is on topic AND contains the information Andrea should have added to his post.

    3. Here! Here! Absolutely correct. Just becuase a great lens is getting a facelift doesn’t mean the old one is junk. It will be just as good.

If I had to guess… the 70-200G will get an updated lens coating to the new coating they use, get some sealing and (hopefully) update the collar so you can use it with a grip (like the 70-400G has).

The 70-400G is likely to get a new paint job and a new coating as well. But I am totally, completely happy with my 70-400G and have no plans to replace it when an updated one comes out.

      1. I hope Sony releases new versions so I could get the old one for lower price! As these lenses are really superb and I’d love to swap my current telephoto for a new 70-200 or 70-400 (depending how pricing of these will go)

  4. It sends out an unprofessional taste when lenses are discontinued and no replacement comess out in a timely manner.
I don’t think they loose so many sales however, but that is another matter.

  5. All of us are free to move to a different camera maker if Sony doesn’t make the product we want.
If you must have a camera with more/different options in optics go to Canon or Nikon.
Sony is what it is and if that’s a problem, go elsewhere.

  6. Well, I seriously doubt that we will see an A-mount FF in “a couple of months”.
It was supposed to be done in spring, then supposedly “delayed” (of course you can’t delay something that you haven’t announced), lenses were supposed to be released in APRIL – it was SR5!!! – but nothing happened, and they are now “supposedly delayed” till 2013.
    Two options:
    – SONY is a non-serious company
    – SAR has VERY unreliable sources

I’m betting on the second. I’m also betting on the fact that a lot of the “sources” are SONY marketing people who do their best to keep people waiting.
Because if the original rumour about the new FF and the new/redesigned lenses would say end of 2012 start of 2013 in december 2011 (remember, that’s when we were told here about a release in march), a lot more people would jump ship. This way we are getting it in the ass slowly – inch by inch – most people not even noticing.

Here is what I’m thinking we will see on Photokina – the clear plastic prototype of the new FF. Maybe some more NEX stuff, but almost surely no A-mount stuff.
    WHY do I think this?
Because I think they delayed the lenses so that they can release them together with a new pro-oriented body.

SONY marketing people – aka sources – if you are reading this, please stop the BS, you’ll make your company look even less serious.

    1. Sony marketing wouldn’t send out a message about delaying lenses. They want you to buy existing lenses NOW not later.

    2. @Bman…. yes, you have it down! Give yourself a prize. You figured it out. Sony’s entire job is to not actually make something but to just feed stuff to SAR to trick everyone.

      Really?

You are correct that there never has been any announcement from the Company about anything. However, “sources” have said many times on multiple sites that they were going to bring out a FF earlier this spring, but all the issues in Japan and Thialand got them backlogged and they couldn’t.

Also, most people believe that companies that make things have an assembly line for every single product. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Sony (and many other companies) were severaly affected by the Japan Quake and the Thialand floods. It caused already announced and shipping products to stop dead in their tracks. A single assembly line at a factory makes certain products for a certain amount of time, then retools for another product for a certain amount of time.

When the disaters hit, their ability to make products that were already in the marketplace stopped. When things started back up again, they HAD to prioritze on the global market for a current product and (according to rumor) postpone a few. I promise that a single FF camera and a couple of lenses were not the only things Sony makes that were prioritized.

As a matter of fact, the plant that made HDCAM-SR videotape was heavily damaged in Japan and took almost nine months to start making tape again. Before anyone poo-poos about “no one uses tape any more”, you couldn’t be more wrong. The professional broadcast industry was heavily reliant on HDCAM-SR tape (which went for about $300 per hour). It was only thing that could handle the massive amount of data at 880Mbps of recording at anywhere close to a cost-effective means. When that plant was destroyed, it was a HUGE deal for the world’s top broadcasters and post production houses, including anyone who used HDC-F900 cameras, F35 cameras, etc. They couldn’t record any more. Tape was rationed. And the list went on and on with products what were affected by the disasters.

Sony “delaying” a unannounced FF camera and a couple of lenses were the least of its problems.

On that small part of the company, Now that its current lineup of cameras, etc have been back up to speed (and have been since last spring) they can concentrate on newer products and fitting those plans into manufacturing.

Sony’s life doesn’t revolve around a single camera and where or not @Bman can get it when he wants it.

      1. Well, I think you misunderstood me.
I did not say that they do not make anything.
It is quite clear that development is being made.

        However, imagine the following scenario:
It’s early winter 2011 – your company has been hit hard by bad natural disasters. On the market where you are competing, you know that the biggest competitors will come out with new top level models in spring. You are neither ready nor capable to deliver a product by then. So you launch a rumour that you will also be releasing a top level camera in that time frame.
As it nears, and the competition specs get clearer, you of course launch more rumours that say that you could not meet deadlines due to the disasters, etc … (which is completely true!) and that the new top level model will come in early summer.
The competition launches it’s stuff, and soon after, you launch rumours how your top-level model will severely undercut the competition in the price department but sadly the product would only be ready by the usual time (SONY alpha gear has major launches at end of August almost every year …)

        Sounds possible? Totally.
        Sounds likely? Maybe.

If this is true, what bothers me is that there were rumours which were obviously false about the cam being ready by march, and then that it would cost 2k, etc …
Purposefuly false rumours, just to prevent people from jumping ship and/or for the users of the competition to maybe delay their purchase.

I completely understand SONY and their position after the disasters, I realistically did not expect a new FF till late 2012 to be honest, and I still don’t.

As to my personal “position” on this matter.
I don’t really care about the date of a new FF, I could not afford it new anyway. I am an avid hobbyist who also earns ~2k per year with some journalist photography. I do not need new gear, current one more than suffices.
However, I am not stupid, and I see how rumours gradually change in a predictable way.
And I will write here, so that I can either brag later, or be scoffed at by others:
There will be another rumour that the A99 (or whatever) will not be ready by Photokina. This will happen within a month. I stand by that, and if I am proven wrong I will be even happier than if it turns out that I am right.

        WHY?
Because I believe these rumours about the lenses are actually real. The new lenses will most likely feature new coatings and/or weather seals (and maybe a new colour for the 70-400). Nothing serious, that would require time consuming product line retooling or similar. So the only other reason is that SONY doesn’t want to launch upgraded lenses without also launching a “pro” spec’ed body with it.
It’s what I think, so deal with it.

        Regards,
        B’

  7. So they missed Olympics, and now they are missing a strong show in photokina? too bad for them.. Hopefully they get everything set for photokina and impress the media and visitors, and why not, the whole world.

    1. What amazes me is that most that post the lousy comments here will never purchase the equipment that they are moaning about! I mean how many of you are going to purchase the new FF? Much like so much was said about the 500F4 but how many here actually own one?

  8. Not important, those focal length lenses already exist, good ones. If they were actually expanding the tele range it might be interesting, but Sony does not do that.

About all that makes any sense for Sony to be doing this is that they are going to change the A mount specs to obsolete all current lenses. Time to end the use of old Minolta lenses….

  9. It would be nice to believe that the 36mp was going to come out in early 13 but I don’t. I am very glad I picked up an a850 in great shape.

As far as lenses go a high quality super wide at around 1k would be nice as an option to having to buy a cz for 2k

  10. Sony should atleast showcase these as “silver/chrome prototypes” on Photokina (like the 500/4 they did)

        1. People don’t drop a couple of grand on a lens knowing that a replacement is due out. It’s pretty obvious to those who have common-sense.

  11. Zeiss needs to modify their lens contract with Sony to allow them to supply lenses for A-mount and E-mount themselves instead of waiting around for Sony to develop new products.

    1. The E-mount is an open mount : anyone who want to produce E-lenses can do it.

Zeiss does not produce AF lens (the CZ 24-70 & Co have a Sony AF mechanism).

      1. Zeiss subcontracts lens production for all of their non-cine DSLR lenses, not just the ones for Sony. Their lenses for the Nikon and Canon mounts are manufactured by Cosina to Zeiss’s specs. There’s no reason why Zeiss couldn’t let someone other than Sony make lenses, even AF lenses, for Sony’s cameras.

        1. That is if Sony gave them the license to produce Alpha mount lenses. Otherwise they’d have to (allegedly) reverse engineer it like Sigma and you’d be sending your lenses back for re-chipping every time Sony made a change.

  12. If people here were not following ‘rumors’ they would have no idea of ‘possible’ future releases… so there would be knowledge of ‘delays’. If they had announced the items with a release date, then rolled the date back it would be a ‘delay’.

Stop holding companies responsible for the accuracy of products based on rumors and speculation.

    1. Indeed. People here appear to confuse rumour and official announcement. You’d think they would learn by now.

  13. hahaha
    Another SONY fail!
How can company as small as Sigma produce tons of reasonable quality and affordable lenses for multiple camera platforms that have to be reverse engineered but yet a giant like Sony cannot manage to develop a few lenses for its own camera platform?

I don’t believe whatever reasons are given for the lack of new SONY lenses at Photokina. It seems to me that optical lens construction and mass production is now a well known art and science for several decades and the only reason why SONY is not coming out with lenses is because SONY leadership does not place high priority and resources to it.

      1. There has never been a single promise of anything. Ever. How can there be a delay and a call for people to be fired when nothing was ever promised?

        1. Well nothings promised.. I don’t know about that.
What Sony said once upon a blue moon.. was something like, *we aim to become atleast as big as Nikon*.. IIRC.

      2. Sony doesn’t need to promise anything to anyone. On the other hand, it’s not like there aren’t other camera systems to choose from if people don’t like Sony’s product schedule.

    1. I think you mean “because sony leadership DID not place high priority and resources to it”.

There is a shift in direction towards imaging for Sony, it was announced not so long ago by them too.

  14. As long as the delay for the 70-200 isn’t anything close to the one 500F4 suffered I’m fine with that…..

    1. Yeah those pesky little earthquakes, floods, nuclear meltdowns and deaths…Sony really must try harder to satisfy our camera needs.

  15. I kinda like my 70-200 2.8G and won’t feel mortally wounded if a replacement doesn’t come out in the next year or more. How many of people here have experience with this lens? Below are some examples with my lens and 850 (please don’t look at these if you don’t like pics of beautiful women).

    1. Rob,

I just love my 70-200mm F2.8 G, fast AF, outstanding IQ and when combined with my a850 or a77 with VG it is a balanced lens. The only thing I can fault is the weight, you certainly know if you have been holding it for a while.

      Si

      1. Si – while some people might call it heavy, others would say it’s substantial. I agree about the IQ and focus speed (and it’s quiet as well as fast).
