(FT5) New Olympus MFT camera and new MFT kit lens coming in Spring.

Rumor work never ends! By early 2014 we expect a bunch of new announcements. Not only Panasonic is almost ready to launch a new 4K GH camera. According to two trusted sources Olympus will also launch one new MFT camera with a brand new MFT kit lens. I hope to get some reliable specs soon. One more thing: One source said it’s not a PEN!

Overall it sounds like both Panasonic and Olympus will NOT wait til Photokina to launch some interesting new stuff.

      1. This just in………..a new camera will be announced sometime in the future.. I’m going to double down and call this a FT10 rumor.

J/k keep up the good work!

      2. That makes a lot of sense. No everybody wants a E-M1, as it is a bit big for a mirrorless and it includes PDAF which is only used for 43 lenses that most people do not own and do not want to have to pay for. So, the E-M6, already on the roadmap, makes sense, being a smaller fully featured pro level camera, to update the E-M5 with 1/8000 sec, focus peaking, better IBIS, larger VF-4 EVF, a proper grip, 3.5mm audio input, and a NEW 20MP sensor. This update is long due for a camera that has become the main model for Olympus, the camera that most people will buy and that pays the bills for Olympus. E-M1 is niche, just like the E-P5.

        1. most people should want the old 4/3rds lenses, because they are really, really, good and you can buy HG lenses for $300-500 a piece these days. It’s a steal.

    1. I am still waiting considering if i should get the em1 or wait for em6. I will need a new camera by next March. Hopefully em6 will be announced by then. Admin, any news on em6? =p

    2. I’ll bet, with a new maybe faster kit lens with better image quality, maybe comparable to panasonic’s 14-42mm II.

I just bought an e-m5 but i got a great deal on it and wont be mad, I dont expect it to blow the e-m5 out of the water just like the e-m1 doesnt.

      1. If they already have a 12-40 2.8, and 12-35 2.8, how much different do you think a 12-40 2.8-4 would be, really?

You know what they need? An 11-38.5 2.6-2.9! Why haven’t they made it yet?!

      1. The purpose of language is communication. Was there something there that confused you and that was worth crying about?

I had no problem understand your post despite the hash tags, and I agree: You are a #tool.

  1. The new lens will be the 40-150mm f2.8 that’s already known. Maybe at Photokina they will announce the new PRO wide zoom (6-12mm or 8-17mm)

  2. You write: “Not only Panasonic is almost ready to launch a new 4K GH camera.”

I doubt that. And I hope it’s still a long way until this GH4K-thing is going to be announced or launched. Personally I wish Panasonic would feel a little bit more committed to improve their already introduced products. Look at the GH3: The firmware is not even 100% bugfree and the community is begging for some simple changes (e.g. to have an option to turn off the annoying disappearance of the screen info after 10 seconds, or focus peaking). I don’t like to buy a new camera every 1.5 years just to see those simple things fixed.

      1. Focus Peaking works perfectly with Magic Lantern on a four year old EOS 550D. And on a GH3 it’s impossible? I can’t believe it.

        1. focus peaking is more of hardware limits, since Panasonic and Canon use different architecture for their machine, look at Olympus’s peaking, it slows down the machine.

  3. E-M5 will be two years old soon. E-PM2 will be a year and half old by spring. So, PEN or no PEN, it’s one of those two that will get a successor. I guess Oly is waiting for some new sensor tech to start revamping its lineup.

As for the new kit lens, we haven’t had a new 14-42mm for more than half a year. I was beginning to worry :).

  4. I don’t understand these companies. Don’t they test their cameras before distribute ? Why should ‘simple things ‘ get missed ?
Why is firmware needed for stuff they should have figured out long before hand ??!!!

    1. You have clearly not been involved in any sort of product development, leave it to those who are smarter than you to make criticism

        1. Meanwhile, the ignorant American doesn’t even know that those incidents that lead to the recall (the oh-so-dramatic media coverage haha) have been tracked back to user operation error. How about getting informed before forming an opinion. Oh btw. getting informed doesn’t mean watching your useless bullshit-loaded news digest that comes with your supper.

    2. Let’s try this the not spouting insults way. Most companies do have QC, but when they test it, either the the problem doesn’t occur or they don’t try out every method of photography/settings that customers do. They try, but the sheer amount of different people using it for different ways would be impossible for a small team to reliably test such ways.

Things such as the double image error at certain shutter speeds could be easily missed, while usage in the real world would show it. Once enough people report it, they can attempt to recreate, and once they finally find it, they can examine it to figure out a solution. No process is perfect, and problems will always be found by customers after the products introduction, no matter how much testing they do.

      1. It has to be said: A product not on the market is generating no revenue. Hence a strong push to release a product as soon as possible. Thorough testing takes a long long time.

    1. With a bright OVF, silent shutter, built-in ND filter.
In the large-sensor compact market, there’s only a 50mm camera(the not so fast Sigma Dp2m), i don’t get why companies doesn’t develop nothing in this way.
I mean, everyone loves fast 50s.

      1. …ovf? Never gonna happen.

Not that I’d want one anyway- EVFs are getting good now- why would I want to shoot blind with no feedback?

        1. A galilean viewfinder, obviously.
I like EVF, but a direct vision of the scene will be a pleasant way to shoot, and useful also.

          1. The new EVF on the E-M1 and VF4 its really good,..and usefull , what you see is what you get, in term of exposure and color, compare to OVF you might always have to guess , what the exposure on the picture would be.

  5. Why did panasonic eat Olympus’ lunch and produce the real pen successor, the GX-7. I wanted to love Oly, but I hate SLR style, external viewfinder and flashes.

  6. I wish it were a GM1 challenger: tiny, but with a 5 axis IBIS, more manual controls, and a pancake zoom with longer range (and, in my dreams, faster aperture). But in my heart I know that they will produce an EM-6 instead…

    1. I think Oly should be smart enough to take some things away from the reception of the GM1.

If the e-pm3 could squeeze in a flash and top control wheel like the GM1, I might buy it, even if it were a little bigger. You’d have the hotshoe, ibis, a little more of a grip, and probably lower price. Maybe the new kit lens is chasing the small size of the new Panny lens?

It’s a good time for fans of compact m4/3 gear!

      1. They should put a control wheel around the lens mount like the XZ-2. Doesn’t take up any real estate on the main body of the camera and means that you can make some settings with your left hand.

    1. If you live in NYC , you better contact 17 st photo and H and B , they already shipped a months ago and i had mine the second batch two weeks ago,.but i heard from a friend who work at B&H photo, they start receive ten item every weeks begin these saturday.

Btw i got the 12-40 already with 4 other customer last tuesday from 17 street photo,. And its time to send it back the recipe and barcode to get $200 mail – in rebate

    1. I doubt it will happen. m4/3 is a perfect complementary system to FF one. Lenses for FF will always be significantly larger and heavier. Still I am not convinced about IQ of the new Alphas. Maybe Fuji will be the game changer there. But again in 2015 even m4/3 will gain organic sensors, right?

        1. APS-C will probably stick around in entry level interchangeable-lens cameras. They are cheap and there are now a lot of legacy APS-C format lenses out there. But I think in the compact market you’ll see the 1″ format and FF taking out fixed lens compacts like the X100, Ricoh GR, and Coolpix A. And in the advanced hobbiest/semi-pro realm I think that FF will replace APS-C.

It will be hard to justify a $1200 APS-C body when you could get a FF body for not much more and use all of your lenses.

MFT fills a different niche, offering smaller lenses and a better crop factor than APS-C. It will have an advantage over 1″ sensors with interchangeable-lens systems as well, though 1″ will be better for high quality fixed lens zooms.

    2. A camera system needs optics, you know. The most popular A7 option on amazon is body only. Something must be seriously wrong considering nobody owns native EF lenses.

      1. The Sony mount adapter flexibility and the excellent focus peaking makes for a great platform for just about any FF lens you can think of.As long as you don’t mind a bit of wrist work :-).I think you even get an AF adapter for EF lenses that allows in lens IS to work. Canon users looking for a higher MP option may be interested in the A7r

        1. Well… No, I am not going to buy a Sony to shoot my Canon lenses. That’s so absurd it’s funny. Nobody with a little experience would either, trust me.

        2. Well most humanity does not enjoy manual focusing, peaking or not. The sentiment expressed by sta ender was that Sony’s EF system would trigger the imminent collapse of m4/3. Perhaps I am just conservative, but at the moment this scenario seems as remote as any. The A7s have a rather limited target demographic while m4/3 is more appealing to non-experts and is quite frankly good enough for anybody except the most obsessive geeks.

    3. Then put your money where your mouth is and buy the clickety-clack, no IBIS, A7 with the large and expensive lenses. Cheapskate.

      1. Not everyone suffers from the shakes and where IBIS would in theory be most useful low light you are restricted to static shots as it does not help with movement. The Canon crowd can mount their EF is lenses on the metabones adapter and get decent AF an working IS.All the way from 16-1200mm

IBIS is vital that’s why all the top brands Sony ,Pentax, and Olympus, use it oops that hasn’t worked out so well if you take a peek at the old financials lol

I think I can see why Olympus fans need image stabilization quite so much a bit too much of the old circle jerking going on

      2. C.C., you forgot to add SLOW lenses. Can’t believe the wasted opportunity from Sony on that one. They could have had the market. Instead they release an expensive f2.8 prime??! Way to take all your shallow DOF and low-light potential (that FF trolls rant about all day) and f l u s h it down the toilet.

        1. I wished all the FF TROLLS went to PDN last week, and tried the Sony A7/r, its sure a lots of people there but most of the people had complained why , shutter sound ,so loud, why the button is not in right position, , why the focus area its so NEX style, its really awkward , most of the spectator were growing cold toward the camera after they tried,

I also find myself become cold , after i tried, the AF slow, .. Its just so waste , that Sony had to throw the opportunity to be the first company who make FF mirrorless with auto focus ,. Its just they did many sloppy thing , and rushed their product, maybe the second generation will be better

    4. You are right, on the day that Sony announced their A7, my gorgeous micro four thirds lenses suddenly stopped to produce beautiful pictures. Incredible. Time to pack up and quit photography!

    5. 35mm (Sony or otherwise) doesn’t compete with MFT. People who use MFT do so because they want high image quality in a very portable form. The Sony body is small but the lenses are huge, and insanely overpriced, and otherwise underperform optically compared to MFT. Couple that with No IBIS, no weather sealing, and a shutter that sounds like a guillotine coming down, and at best, you might steal some business away from Canon or Nikon.

    6. In contrary, i think M43 will become the first choice for people who like to use Tele- and super tele lens, .its just a matter of time for M43 especially Olympus with their PDAF intact ,. Will trample the monstrous Super Tele lens on the size and weight,..

TRY TO MAKE A 600 mm F 4 ,. With your tiny Sony A7 camera, , its so ridiculous to see what would it like to see Gigantic lens on a small camera,. And compared with m43 system with only 300mm f4 ,on M43 body

      1. Yes but the only problem is there’s no quality M4/3 long telephoto lenses yet.
That leaves us with 4/3 lenses as big and expensive as FF.
Hopefully Olympus with come up with something in the pro-series.

  7. I hope that next time round they concentrate on advancing image quality features are great and lots of fun but .If they want to up sales they need to give a good reason to do so.I have my E-M5 and a cheapo GH2 I picked up for video.

Though some claim to see wonders being honest I do not see much advance between them in what matters to me,resolution and high ISO noise.

Download some honest RAW samples by honest I mean giving both cameras the same exposure. For video its no contest the GH2 wins.

  8. I bet it’s the low end om-d (e-m10?) And I hope the new kit lens is.the rumored 25/1.8… hope it will be, cheap, small and same build & optically quality then the 45mm.

    1. Yes, I expect the same, although my warmest expectation would be for a Pen with built in EVF.

The other mistery is the FF Osawa (or Ogawa?) was talking about. Will it happen in 2014, will the mount and distance to flange be compatible with m4/3?

I have no doubts that within mirrorless m4/3 is even more central, but there is certainly room for FF experimentation.

      1. “FF experimentation” might be an expensive adventure for a company like Olympus. I hope it has the sense to not go there. OTOH, making lenses for Sony’s A mount could prove rather profitable for them.

        1. That’s what Oly CEO, said not I. And since Oly also declared it will make lenses for Sony. IF, FF it would make good sense to make them also for one new Oly FF.

It is interesting that lens makers are adopting the multi mount approach for mirrorless – in this sense I was talking of experimentation. The investment is much less, and if you have success, there is even a greater margin than in m4/3.

I am not pushing, Oly, LOL.

    1. The lack of lens choice the price of the few that do exist along with the compromises a smaller body gives when using longer FF glass make it less attractive than many imagine.Limited flash system etc it could be attractive as lightweight set up maybe with an adapter and a couple of small primes.Beyond that i don’t see a stampede to get it.

    2. Full frame systems will migrate to mirrorless or not. The upcoming battle between the Sony A7 and Nikon DF will be quite crucial in this. It is clear that mirrorless is advantageous for compact systems, but the advantage is not as clear-cut for large camera systems.

On the other hand I’m really looking forward to the A7 because it will also paint a clear picture to what degree full frame is better than crop sensors for compact cameras. That is, one could compare fast, large glass on both systems, e.g.

      Voigtländer 25mm f/0.95 vs. Sony 55mm f/1.8

And then compact, slow glass on both systems, e.g.

      PL 20mm f/1.7 vs. Sony 35mm f/2.8

And see how big the full frame advantage is. I’m really looking forward to this comparison.

      1. I am beginning to think that there is no advantage except in some specialties like Landscape.
        See here:

        http://www.thephoblographer.com/2013/10/30/finding-wrong-sony-a7-a7r-far/

Not only the As are not much reactive, but look at the Zeiss 55 Otus. It’s big as an otary and probably more expensive 🙂

m4/3 is THE mirrorless sweet spot. Only trouble is that it might have reached some limits to growth with 16 Mpx.

But FF35 is not an adequate substitute at all.

        1. In other words, you both ignore if there is an “advantage” or not.
It’s actually fair of you guys to say so: 95% of the folks here have never tried the stuff and talk about it, and even have strong opinions, and even lecture the others.
Why don’t you go out and try the stuff? It is easy enough.

          1. LOL I have dealt with the limitations of FF 35mm film half of my life, so I know very well what happens lamer troll when you have to carry the shebang, and stopd down all the time to have useful DOF.
            Go tell your sister, lamer.

          2. Having strong opinions about stuff you never tried…

Not something you should be complaining about, as that is the only thing you seem capable of.

        2. I read your phoblographer link and don’t understand some of his claims:

“However, the cameras that we’ve been dealing with for a while have had APS-C and Micro Four Thirds sensors. Because the A7 and A7r are full frame sensor cams, nailing focusing is even more essential.”

Why is it ok to be out of focus with smaller formats but not with the A7?

“However, nailing that image is tougher because the sensor amplifies the slightest issue (such as camera shake) and any other problem by ten fold. We almost feel like anything we do with it requires a tripod.”

Why is it ok to have camera shake in smaller formats, but not in the A7? And where exactly does this tenfold factor come from?

          1. Well you should ask him, but it is absolutely true that the more Mpx you have the more you are sensitive to camera shake. And the more critical MF and AF becomes if I read Chris Gampat well.

Are these problems transitory like they were for m4/3? Perhaps. What is not transitory is the added difficulty for wide lenses below 35mm, that even Leica was never really able to solve, due to short distance to flange and the obliquity of rays to wells.

I was also astonished by the mere size of the Zeiss 55mm. Is that the way they try to solve the problem of telecentricity? Leica has nothing to fear.

And yet not being a fundamentalist I am still interested by what Fuji and Oly are going to offer in FF. Perhaps Sony botched the mount size/distance to flange, perhaps they have a better experience of lens miniaturization.

At any rate it is clear that a smaller sensor is much easier to deal with when you have a short distance to flange.

  9. New kit lens may be a standard zoom, it can’t be an prime or a telezoom.

I think it will be just a zoom standard.

    1. I think you’re right.
Oly is falling behind Panasonic in the slow kit lens department, with both new 14-42 and 12-32 Lumix being smaller than the current Oly, while still giving high IQ. And I think they look better too. Sounds useless to us camera nerds, but a new Olympus cheap kit lens might be in order.

  10. my bet is this will be a e-m5 replacement, a bit smaller, better evf, cheaper, lesser quality build (you can get the e-m1 if you want more) and less buttons and stuff. same sensor.

why? because with the release of the e-m1 with essentially the same sensor as the e-m5 now, they won’t release a lower end camera (body wise) with a much better sensor half a year later, that would just piss off the e-m1 users.

I’m also going to predict that oly will be replacing the em-1 with a new camera in about a year with a noticeably better sensor (or maybe if the sensor technology won’t advance that fast, they will go fullframe and the mft sensors won’t improve much anymore, or maybe it just much slower until the next sensor revolution from sony (even though we are hearing a lot from panasonic and fuji about these organic sensors (if they are the same as organic lcds then good luck 🙂 I would still bet on sony for the next sensor revolution, or maybe sigma actually! the way completely changed (revolutionized) their product lineup and image in the last two years inspires quite a lot of hope in that company).

    1. To all FF fans out there, MFT fans understand the advantages of FF…we get it! Now, you need to educate yourself and learn the advantages of MFT…because your FF drool is causing a mental meltdown.

I recently toured Alaska with three MFT bodies and ELEVEN lenses – all packed in a sling bag! I was prepared for virtually any photo opportunity that I encountered…and it paid off. I captured fantastic images of glaciers and mountains and Russian architecture and whales and seals and boats and bald eagles and street scenes, etc.

If I was shooting FF, I would have needed to hire an entourage of helpers to carry equivalent FF gear (11 lenses, remember?). Sure, I might have achieved slightly or moderately higher IQ with FF, but there is no way I could have been as well prepared for the unknown photographic situations I would encounter. The required logistics of carrying a complete FF system (whenever that will be available) does not fit within my photographic hobby methodology or desires.

      1. Jon, you also could have brought youre iPhone and leave the sling back home. Good quality and even less bulk.

        1. It’s almost like every format is a trade off between sensor/ lens size and image quality!

The trick, IMO, when deciding where you want to sit on the spectrum between large format and an iphone, is figuring out your personal preference when it comes to that trade off. For most of us here, we’re happy with the images we get from the latest generation of M4/3, so we occupy that part of the spectrum. If you’re not happy with that, you’re not wrong, you just have different wants/needs.

At least, that’s how I look at it, which is why I’m constantly scratching my head at the fighting in photography forums. It’s like seeing people argue with other people that their favourite colour should be red, not blue or that they should like the Spring, not the Fall.

    2. Simon, Im afraid you might be right there. Was hoping for a E-m6 (with new sensor, EVF and better video) with same build quality as E-m5, but I guess theyll have to differentiate the quality between the low-end and high-end Om-d.

    3. The cycle for Oly top cameras is normally three years.
As the technology for significant improvements in sensors does not exist and there has not been a major breakthrough in IQ for about 4 years, since Sony introduced their new architecture, I expect the E-M1 replacement to come about 2016 when some of the research in areas like organic sensors make it through to production.

  11. Since people are guessing here is my guess. The E-M5 replacement that will basically be the E-P5 but with built-in EVF and weather sealing. For the lens it will be the mid-level 12-40 f 2.8-4.0. Remember they have patents for both versions of the 12-40.

  12. Dear Olympus, give us, om-d em-5 users, focus peaking and super spot af!
Then a weather sealed normal prime that can match “omds” body.
It’s true, the a7 system is poor of native glasses but the few are all splashproof… and it has focus peaking!

    1. @full frame: here, take these, use them next time: if you don’t know how to use them, scatter them frantically in your rant. (,,,..:::;;;) It can’t be worse than as already is..

        1. FF, you should try to stuff a FF Lens up where the sun never shines, it would fit better than the m4/3 Lens that you already got in place.

  13. “Overall it sounds like …… Olympus will NOT wait til Photokina to launch some interesting new stuff.”
Here in the UK there will be a large photo show at the NEC, 1-4 March at which Olympus will definitely have a stand. They were not at the previous show because the said they did not have any new product. So, on that basis perhaps they will be promoting their new OMD EM6!

  14. Come on Olympus (or Panasonic & Sigma) how about addressing the lack of primes wider than 12mm and greater than 75mm? Who needs another fecking kit zoom? Where is the 7mm/2, 9mm/2, 100mm/2.8 macro, 150mm/2.8, 300mm/4, & 1.4x converter. All should come in ONE color, be E-M1 weatherproofed and include a hood. Also need a compact ring-flash. Not another useless kit zoom.

  15. My guess is this is olympus’ s answer back to either the Gx7 or GM1, in other words either an integrated evf camera which Oly has decided will be a totally new and sepaerate line of m43 camera or a slightly new take on the epm line that was intended as an ultra premium and small camera like the Panasonic GM1.
I’m wondering which classic camera will they be reviving this time?

  16. Hoping for a EM-0, with a stylish body and not a glued on grip like EM-1, bigger sensor, better video and a normal price for M43 something about 500 euro.

  17. I don’t think it’s the em5 mk2 because Olympus is now focused on high end video specs for their next serious spec camera and if they release it now without a newly designed sensor amd truepic engine tailored for 4k than they’ll have another camera with mediocre video on the shelf for the next couple of years while everyone moves ahead.
Sony is preparing it’s big alpha mount top dog camera for 4k next year and from that we can deduce that Olympus has requested a sensor based around these needs.
My opinion is next year around August will be a huge release for the em5 mk2 with breakthrough video specs for the Oly user and perhaps a new 20mp sensor and new imaging engine primed for high end video, no AA filter and huge buffer support.

    1. It probably will be an OM-D camera, but not necessarily an EM5 mk2.

Your point about video is good, maybe Olympus will try to compete in this area.

  18. Go for it Olympus, hope it sells well.

personally, I’m going to keep saving and wait for a big advancement in sensor technology, even if it takes until 2016-17.

The E-M5 is easily sufficient for my needs.

  19. Im guessing its a gm1 competitor. Though they will struggle to make it as small because of the ibis.
It doesnt make sense releasing an em6 so close to the em1 as the latters sales will suffer dramatically..

    1. EM1 is for pro-photographer who already had 4/3 lenses. Mounting a M4/3 prime lens on EM1 body is very ugly. EM6 is for enthusiasts who already had M4/3 lenses.

      1. Exactly right. That is why they will not release the em6 so close to the em1. If they ment the em1 solely for people with 4/3 lenses their production/sales expectations would be very low. Oly also wants enthusiasts who want the best available product to buy the em1 too..

  20. I think it may be a OMD E-M6. E-M5 announced almost 2 years ago. It’s time to announce a new successor.

E-M1 is practical but it’s not as beautiful as E-M5. Most of enthusiasts want to hang a beautiful camera on their neck. On the other hand, when E-M1 is mounted with some sliver prime lenses say 12mm F2.0, 45mm F1.8, and 75mm F1.8. It looks weird. E-M1 is perfect for pro-photographer but not suitable for enthusiasts who want beautiful outlook and portability.

Fuji, Nikon are going to launch FF retro mirrorless cameras. Olympus must launch a new retro OMD to secure the market share.

  21. When Olympus launched the OM-D line with the E-M5, they told that the OM-D line would include two ther models : a high end one and a lower end one. We have the middle level and the high level, so the next to come should be the entry level one. E-M7 perhaps ?
