    1. from the specs : 1/1.7 inch back illuminated sensor
the cropfactor of a sensor like that will be 4.55 (i looked it up)

so for a 28-300 eqvivalent lens ,it should be 6-66 (ish)

  1. > – Shutter -1/2000 seconds 60 seconds

Wow, great. Makes sense to limit fastest shutter to 1/2000 when having a constand f/2.8 lense. No?

  2. Do we assume that the video mode is still only 30P.

We are then again reminded by a Olympus that this superior photographic machine is only for still pictures for anybody living in PAL region.

This is really pathetic, we need to really send some angry letters to Olympus.

    Enough is enough.

    1. The best message to sent Olympus is not to buy their product. Apart from price I don’t know why someone would buy this over the Sony RX10 anyway. At lest the RX10 gives your very sharp 25p.

  3. Why is Oly still making small sensor camera like this is beyond me. Panny GM-1 and Sony RX-10 are more worthy cameras.

    1. ??? Ah. Let me see. Panasonic and Sony do *not* make cameras with sensors smaller than 1″… Is that what you mean??

      1. @ Bli ??? Ah. Let me see. Panasonic and Sony do *not* make cameras with sensors smaller than 1″… Is that what you mean??

That exactly my point. Panny, Sony and Conon already did that years ago. Sony and Panny have move on to better cameras with bigger sensors. Why is Oly bringing in a yesteryear camera to the table? Panny also announced they are stopping most of the smaller sensors cameras division.

        1. Oly should bring something that is more inovative and refeshing – out of the box products that not in the market yet. Seems like panny score with their GM-1 and Sony with their A7/7r and RX10.

    2. Let’s face it, Olympus will never release a compact with a 1″ sensor. Nor will Panasonic. It’s just too close to being a competitor for their 4/3 models.

This camera is half the weight of the RX10, that’s worth something (to me at least). And I doubt it will cost 1200 euro like the RX10… Too bad it is not 24mm equivalent at the wide end. Anyway, despite the small sensor I’m still interested.

    1. Might interest me. I like to travel light and the sensors keep getting better. I use a Sony Alpha now and then but mostly my Pens (smaller and smaller size sensor) but I don’t see much difference. Never print bigger than A3 (30 * 40 cm). Saw pictures of the XZ-1 from Olympus and the Fuji X-10 and that’s not bad at all, and the camera’s are small!

    2. Hi Shenkie, criticising sensor size? That’s original of you. Still looking forward to seeing those comparison photos you took.

      1. Jeah,
But still with this camera price you can get a lot bigger sensor… that’s always an issue.
But constat 2.8 aperture is nice. But… I think only those photo enthusiast who want all around in your ‘large pocket’, compact camera and are willing to pay for it are the only ones whom will be getting this.

I won’t be considering this before the price plummet sub 200 pucks. And we all know how fast compact camera prices comes down before the newer model comes around.

  4. Interesting camera, probably the nicest super-zoom ever made, an important segment in japanese market, and a real answer to smartphones threat (no, big sensor is not the only thing phones can’t do).
Most point and shooters aim for more zoom (to avoid the deceptions of digital zoom), limited size and budget.
With the EVF, Stylus is positioned in the same niche as Canon Fuji X100s,Nikon P7800,Canon Powershot G series, Lumix DMC-LF1 (and Leica C), Beating them all with this 300/2. Let’s ait for the price…
    – Nicer than those DSLR wannabe superzooms, “look mumy how I’m strong” design.
    – Waiting for the size specifications but probably more pocketable than the other super-zooms (although less pocketable tan the XZ2, hope that this time the hump is for a flash, and not just design).
    – Waiting for test but an interesting lens: 300 mm at 2.8 is not just great for tourism, you can also walk a few meters back and get subject isolation.
    – EVF seems to be the one from EM-5, not as good as EM-1 but good enough for a compact sensor, and keeps the price down.

      1. Have a look at the RX10 samples first!
You will discover a lot of mush found in small 1/2.3″ sensored P&S before!
        Badly disappointed!

Nikon P7800 provides much better IQ with smaller sensor!

        So what?

        1. Rubbish. The RX100/II are praised for their image quality and this has the same sensor. Pre-release samples are always poor and there is no RAW converter yet.

  5. Nice camera especially with that constant f2.8 28-300 equiv lens but I’m no longer interested in a point and shoot with a sensor smaller than the 1 inch type especially now that Olympus has VIP access to Sony sensors.

What I’d truly love is an Olympus styled RX100 or RX10 with a premium zuiko lens and all the Olympus tech found in their ep5 or omd cams like 5 axis IBIS.
I understand these things I desire in a point and shoot will cost a premium and I don’t mind because when I owned an xz1 I actually remember thinking it’s great for what it is but if I only I took my pen and a couple lenses.
For me that size sensor just doesn’t cut it except in absolute ideal conditions unless you’re willing to do some extra post work to compensate for it’s lack of DR and that crap colour at iso 800 and over. Let’s see what Olympus is cooking with that rumored large sensor compact that’s in the works.
    Any news Admin?

  6. Another great camera targeting us over 80s retirees. Got to give this one a whirl. Great for those postage stamp sized prints of the lawn bowls club and the grandkids. It looks like a DSLR too so it must be professional quality. Bundle it with a pleather wrist strap and a beige hat and I’m sold.

    1. We have known it all along that you are an over 80s retiree — it is so obvious from your writing. I’m just glad you have stumbled across the camera that suits your needs :-).

    1. You’re kidding, right?

The G15 is a much better camera. This camera isn’t even in the G15’s class. Did you see the G16?

      1. Canon G15 and G16 have the same sensor size 1/1.7 and 28-140mm, if you need 300mm you need to use the Digital Zoom on these Canons.

        1. yes you’re right but digital zoom X1.5 or X2.0 on these small sensors makes awful IQ and Canon is not above this fact…better not use it at all ! Olympus Stylus 1 is interesting to me for EVF,titling screen and 28-300mm f/2.8, many advantages that Canon Powershot G series have not…As a G15 owner,G16 doesn’t interest me as this is a recyling G15 product with incremental upgrades as usual with Canon…

      2. MrALLCAPS, very similar class, but Stylus 1 is better. The EVF is much better than the dinky OVF in G15/G16 which does not show the whole frame, does not have correct framing for what it shows (stupid tunnel type) and is simply too small. And 140mm is not the same as 300mm. Neither is pocketable, although Stylus1 is probably going to be bigger (the lens should be longer, and good EVF takes space).

  7. This is a Cheap Knockoff camera you would expect from some weak company, trying to cash in from the success of the E-M5, NOT from Olympus themselves!
Why would they even do this? They must really think people are that stupid. “Its not a OMD, but it looks like one, so it must be cool, huh?” -Nope.

Very bad idea, very bad execution.

    1. “A weak camera trying to cash in on the success of the EM-5.”

Yep, the pretty much describes Olympus to a ‘T’. Oly is still struggling financially, so they’re going to cash in wherever they can.

  8. 1/1.7″, 28mm… boring. $250 camera, but they will want at least $500 (at which point you can have RX100 and Stylus 1 have ZERO sense).

    1. Yes, the camera would make little sense if you only use it on the wide end of the zoom.
      But why should you?

At the tele end it will easily smash a RX100 into the ground, those cameras are hardly compareable.

  9. This camera will compete Nikon P7800 and not MFT!

Nikon P7800 measures 118,5 x 77,5 x 50,4 mm. Thus, the Stylus 1 will be just a little bit bulkier.

Nikon’s fourth iteration of the P7xxx series lacks speed (AF, processing, writing) AND accuracy (AF, VR). But its IQ is reference in the 1/1,7″ sensor class.

Weatherproofness, tripod socket in lens axis, included filter thread, petal shaped lens hood, remote-control release (without smartphone!), wireless flashsystem, 400+ shots/battery (CIPA) and a dedicated exposure dial would be on my MUST-HAVE wishlist. Will this new Stylus 1 hit all these marks?

Or just waiting for a faster Nikon Pxxxx iteration?

    Cheers 🙂

  10. Wow. All the would-be saviors of the camera world came out today to dump on Olympus.

Where did you come from? Were you all laid off from a camera company?

Why don’t you band together and start your own wildly successful camera company?

I can tell you guys really have the goods as you know how to cheat both physics and economics to give us a magical new camera that will cost pennies to make and sell for less than $5.

  11. will be watching tomorrow, but with no 24mm, no weather sealing, no flash? I am afraid that it will not realy float my wannahave compact do it all tough quality travel camera boat, simply misses the mark at the starting gate. Love the XZ-2 which i have but it is not sealed…

  12. I thought Olympus was getting out of the compact market?

I understand they didn’t do a 1″ sensor as the IQ performance would probably way too close to the PEN series.

At least a constant 2.8 covering a decent zoom, interesting. Unfortunately, is that segment even understand or appreciate what a real zoom lens with a wide aperature means… or even cares… guess it will depend on price point.

  13. Like the E-M5 it “needs” the hump because of the 5-axis IBIS, right? I’ve always wanted a compact camera that wasn’t compact. That’s a missing market segment.

  14. “12 pieces in 10 groups with zero coating”

Umm.. lenses have NO coating at all? Or should it be “Zero”, as in a brand name?

  15. Save your dosh and get Casio Exlim EX ZR 800 16.1 mp 18x starting at 25mm and 5 axis stabilization price Amazon £321.64 on Ebay £212 ex Hong kong. Size just bigger than Olympus PM2 maybe worth a punt

  16. An interesting marketing effort. If such a camera is a transitional camera between P&S and a M43 systems camera, I think I would bypass this and go straight to an interchangeable lens camera. Lenses are the value added.

  17. While we need to wait to see what this is finally capable of, initial thoughts are:

    1. Its got reach and some aperture to go with it. So, should work better for those concert shots in low light .. but then, even with f2.8, you’ll need a fairly high ISO to get reasonable shutter speed for concerts. I’m guessing ISO 1600 + easily .. so, real question is, can it perform at such ISO levels? The XZ series max out at 112mm/f2.5 … so yes, it will certainly do better on this front.
    2. Someone wanting to do those bird shots (with small cameras) in good light may find this better. How much background isolation on average can you get at 300mm/2.8 from a 1/1.7″ sensor? I honestly have no clue. It may do better than your SX280HS / WX300, etc, just a guess though.
    3. Apart from this, I am not certain if it can do anything better than the XZ. In fact it appears to me that within 28-112mm, the XZ is way superior. The XZ can get away with lower ISOs, plus I think (not 100% sure) it can do portraits better than the Stylus 1 even if the latter is zoomed beyond 112mm.
    4. Size. When designing a camera with a small sensor, it is my opinion that they need to be REALLY careful with dimensions. I understand that technology is the limiting factor here, but a consumer does not care about laws of physics/optics etc. Once the camera is beyond a certain size, I’ll simply look at something like, say, an older m43 body w/ zoom lens to match the price.

Those are my thoughts as of now. I certainly hope this is not intended to replace the XZ series, as they are quite different. I would still like that rumoured next XZ w/ the 28-112mm f1.4-1.8 though this sounds a little TOO good to be true.

  18. Constant aperture fix zoom lens…is this something Oly and Sony could have collaborated on since Sony’s new RX10 also has a constant 2.8 24-200mm. We’re talking different sensor sizes and massively different sized lenses here but who knows. I’m just curious when or what the collaboration will bring from the two companies.
